Fentoscience by VS. Sury is indeed an emancipated read. When I initially picked it up I was praying for my half-fried brain to grab on to those theoretical concepts..which indeed it dint go as expected. So here I am with a point trying to convey what I have understood in a nutshell. 


This is about how reasoning in science is an encompassing technique to help understand concepts through problem solving techniques and through inferences. The author gives an enchanting insights into scientific discoveries that exist in the universe (fictional universe) and explains them through hilarious text notes under Fi-sci which means fictitious science. I tried following it strictly but I kept getting lost. But I recommend this to the science buffs who have desire to study physics, universe, planets etc ....

Although Sury says that this book is about the astonishing discoveries in science made by Bagdenborg, who claims to have one hundred names because he has one hundred attributes, it is much more than just a hilarious attempt.

Fentoscience is physics packaged neatly in the wrappings of humour and fun. Sury goes on to define the very many theories of physics that baffle the students in quite a novel and funny way. He first elaborates upon a theory, letting you know what the original theory exactly was, and then, to make learning fun, he introduces the silly spin in the disguise of Prof Bagdenborg who has an alternative ready for every established and proven theory of Physics.

To take an example from the book, when Sury explains about the structure of atom, Bagdenborg claims that like an egg, there is always a demarcation between one object and another. By introducing this frivolity, Sury adds froth to a dry academic subject.

But what exactly is Fentoscience? Sury takes the example of nanoparticles to explain it. When a material is finely ground to the size of nano particles, it exhibits new properties. Prof Bagdenborg took inspiration from that and applied it to the principle in the field of logic, says Sury. When logic is ground to even a finer state that nano, to that of fento, it tansmutes into fentologic.

Sury’s writing is sharp and witty, while trying to demystify the dense theories of science. He uses an imaginary character quite imaginatively and helps the students grasp the basic theories.

A must read for anyone who wants to understand the theories of physics albeit in a lighter vein.

The lucidity of the writing tries to make things easy for readers, to simplify the complicated information, though the book is densely packed with information, highly complex, and too theoretical. There is some extent of wordplay in the chapter titles as well.

On the whole, the book can be followed provided readers have some prerequisite of basic science as the book needs attentive reading.

Divided into three parts with twelve chapters and a huge book list for further reading, this book flips genres, turns things around, and engages the reader to understand the world through a new lens. This innovativeness is commendable though it makes the book too niche-specific and not so easy to read.

What is Fentoscience?

In the Introduction the author tells readers about Professor Bagus Baglicochus Bagdenborg, a.k.a. Jestus Jesticus Jestimedes.

“Now, what is that “fentologic” thing about the professor?

As you are well aware, nanotechnology is the latest buzzword. When a material is finely ground (reduced) to the size of nanoparticles, it exhibits new and surprising properties in that state (“nano”, is smaller than “micro”).

Well, Professor Bagdenborg drew inspiration from that and applied the principle in the field of logic. When logic is ground to even a finer state than “nano”, to that of “fento”, it transmutes into fentologic. Fentologic is thus by far superior to standard logic, thereby opening up vast vistas of knowledge.”

Forget scientific experiments and mathematics. Imagination and intuition are the keys!

“But if science—even fictitious—is not backed up by mathematics, at least it should follow logic. Right? Fortunately, logic comes in many packages: specious, persuasive, rhetorical, fanatic, political, eristic, and even defiant.

But Fentologic, developed by the beloved professor Bagdenborg, beats all types of logic hands down. I have chosen that as the medium for describing the scientific adventures of this book.”

The author builds in this book on the fantasy, fiction, and humor initially introduced in his book Jestus to travel on these scientific adventures.

Fans of that book will enjoy adventuring further with Bagdenborg.

The writing style is not for every audience.

“Professor Bagdenborg firmly believed that his research in the various fields of physics was far in advance of his contemporary scientists’ best efforts. More than that, he was afraid that if he published his works openly, it would attract the attention of some men of evil genius. (It was bound to happen sooner or later.) If diligent men with enough perseverance dug deeper into his theories – that too, was a certainty, given the ultra-inquisitive nature of some men – they would discover new ways of releasing sub-Planck spatial energies that were uncontrollable, that were a billion-billion times more powerful than man on Earth has ever witnessed. The fools (they would rush where angels fear to tread) would arrogantly believe they could control that immeasurable energy. The truth was that even the most sophisticated, elaborately controlled experiments would be totally ineffective in the face of the mighty release of that super energy. It would be like triggering a mini Big Bang. That would be goodbye to the Earth, which would shatter into billions and billions of pieces doomed to wander forlornly forever in the bowels of interstellar space. Ten thousand years of painstakingly built civilization and the more infinitely patiently built planet Earth, by Nature, would vanish forever in one foolish second.”

To fully appreciate the story requires an audience with a familiarity with science and its methods, as well as the ability to go beyond them.

It sounds daft? It is. But it's also shrewd, side-splitting, and positively brain-provoking.

This isn't your typical science text, nor a run-of-the-mill sci-fi novel. It exists somewhere in the gloriously messy middle ground—where imagination converges with fiction, and fiction converges with a kind of reasoning the professor refers to as fentologic (yes, it's logic on a scale smaller than "nano"—you heard that correctly!).

V.S Sury writes a fun satire with FENTOSCIENCE

In FENTOSCIENCE the reader is introduced to Professor Bagus Baglicochus Bagdenborg, who is the main character, and a visionary, but also known as Jestus Jesticus Jestimedes. I am a big fan of V.S Sury and read whatever this author writes. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. The story is broken up into different parts, each one bringing in the self-proclaimed discoveries of the professor. Some of the things he discovers and believes that he is right, and he has given back to science. He is believes in his own genius. He is an interesting character, and there are many intricacies of the story, as they can be both challenging and of course inspiring. You never know when your intellect is sparked and you become inspired to act, no matter what the end result. Basically, you want to know what will or won't happen with what you do. A very unpredictable story, my favorite kind! A well-written plot. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. This author is a great storyteller. FENTOSCIENCE is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. This book is about the astonishing discoveries in science made by Bagdenborg.

Professor Bagdenborg firmly believed that his research in the various fields of physics was far in advance of his contemporary scientists’ best efforts.

This is not science fiction, but it is fictitious science! Also there is no mathematics here to restrain the “discoveries” under a tight leash. Yet, ideas have been diligently developed “logically”. The logic in this book is a labor of love. It is a heady mixture of seriousness, sobriety, persuasion, and convenience, suitably impregnated with the coloring agent of humor.

But Fentologic, developed by the beloved professor Bagdenborg, beats all types of logic hands down.

The lucidity of the writing tries to make things easy for readers, to simplify the complicated information, though the book is densely packed with information, highly complex, and too theoretical.

This book gives a satisfaction to those archetypal figures lurking inside the readers. May the book germinate a lot more fertile ideas in the minds of adult-kids who are courageous to daydream!
