Secrets of the Faerie Crown #3

Court of Vines and Vipers

Rate this book
The thrilling third installment in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series! (Minors spoilers below)Some of us aren’t meant to be happy. I was foolish to think I deserved it.

The darkness is coming for Annwyn. Veyka Pendragon must stand—with her friends spread across the realms, her mate lost to her, her heart in shreds.

She must face down seven thousand years of prejudice and a lifetime of self doubt. She must make herself a queen that other kingdoms want to ally with… or the entire world will descend into darkness. But how will she defend the world from a darkness rooted in her very soul? She has come to love that dark power within her.

But love is dangerous. Love can kill. Love can be lost.

And the mate that emerges from the mist? Will Arran Earthborn recognize the female he fell in love with… can he love the queen she’s been forced to become?

I was made for death and destruction. Honed as a weapon since childhood. But in the face of the ultimate darkness… even I might not be enough.

The Secrets of the Faerie Crown series is a twisted mythology retelling of the Arthur legend. It is a high-steam fantasy romance with dark elements.

I adore this series! The farther into it I get, the more I love the characters and this world! I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, Queen of Blood and Vengeance, set to release mid-November. Veyka and Arran have more and more trials set their way as the continue to navigate their mating bond while at the same time trying to save their Kingdom from the Darkness that is infecting humans, fae, and any being it can get it's hands on.

Veyka and Arran start this book separated physically and emotionally because of the events that happened at the end of book 2. They spend a good portion of this book trying to find their way back to each other while politically navigating trying to find allies and weapons for the coming battles and/or war. Veyka and Arran are not the only interesting characters in this series, all of the side characters are fleshed out are living breathing entities of their own.

Court of Vines and Vipers by Emberly Ash is a mesmerizing addition to the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, rich with magic, intrigue, and an undeniable romance. Though the pace was a touch slower than in the previous two books, I found myself thoroughly absorbed in the tale. The way the story delves into the themes of power and sacrifice was exquisitely crafted. I genuinely cherished this book, and its dark, unfiltered tone made it feel all the more poignant. My anticipation for the next installment knows no bounds.

This chapter introduces yet another fascinating group within the enchanting world the author has so carefully woven. The magical system is both intricate and alluring, and I found the couple’s dynamic particularly compelling. There was also a certain joy in reconnecting with beloved characters and witnessing their growth since we last left them. This particular couple has, without a doubt, captured my heart as my favorite thus far.

I was particularly drawn to the fresh take on a beloved fairytale retelling, coupled with the magical society that the author has meticulously crafted. In this story, I found myself especially captivated by the male protagonist, and his character’s journey was a highlight, one that truly moved me.

The world-building is masterful, and the faerie elements are enchanting in their complexity. While the plot is brimming with action and unexpected twists, there are moments when it feels slightly repetitive, and certain sections seem to lag in pace. The characters are engaging, though some would benefit from deeper exploration.

Gaaaahhhh! I struggled with this one. I enjoyed the first two books in this series and was so excited to be gifted this from NetGalley. But when I started it, it dragged. I almost DNF it. The other issues I had with it was the “it’s all my fault” trope and the over production of all body fluids. Both MC carried this trope and it drove me crazy.
I think this author has real talent and I’m going to read the next one for sure but I had many issues with this one. I’m only posting this on NetGalley and GR!
Thanks Emberly Ash via NetGalley.

Trigger Warnings for Court of Vines and Vipers:

Court of Vines and Vipers is Emberly Ash's third novel in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. Veyka Pendragon, High Queen of Annwyn, and Arran Earthborn, High King of Annwyn, explore what it means to be together when their relationship is potentially hurting the world. The threat is not just in the human realm, it is here and rampant.

I'm so sad. Emberly Ash started with an amazing first novel in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, but it has gone downhill with each novel. I loved Throne of Air and Darkness, thought Crown of Air and Darkness was good, but Court of Vines and Vipers was just blah. The amnesia trope will immediately pull me out of any story, in any book, this one included. The ending sucked me in enough to still want to read the fourth and final novel in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, but I'm much less excited than I was in the very beginning.

All in All, I really hope Ash can turn this series around. The characters are captivating and their growth is so fun to watch. As someone with limited Arthurian knowledge, it has been so fun to learn what is and isn't from the old tales. Special thanks to NetGalley, Emberly Ash, and Cara Maxwell Romance Publishing for access to a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 rounded up. The beginning of this book was pretty slow for me, but about halfway through it picked up and I was invested. Veyka is trying to support a kingdom through the challenges that lie ahead while her mate is also dealing with a challenge all his own. I keep wondering if there is another spy in their midst, and how things will unravel concerning Arthur and Veyka's mother. I like the way the main characters relationship evolves and was hopeful with both of them even though they remain in a place of instability. The side characters continue to be interesting and a good addition to the story telling. I would have liked to have heard more from Gwen, but I think that was to set it up for the next book. The settings are described in a way that it is so easy to visualize. The battle scenes were well written. Aaran continues to be supportive through his own struggles and Veyka is portrayed as this independent, fierce woman. It is also a bonus that she is curvy! The only part the continues to be a theme that is a bit repetitive and annoying is the FMC continues to blame herself for everything...like get some therapy girl...this isn't all your fault. ha! The fourth (and final?) book comes out Nov 2024, so I will be excited to read the conclusion and how this all wraps up.

I really enjoyed Court of Vines and Vipers by Emberly Ash. I was so happy to be allowed to ARC this third installment of the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. As difficult as it gets, I love following Veyka and Arran's journey; their connection, love, and devotion for each other is palpable, even when faced with dire circumstances. I cannot reveal too much, but I saw someone calling it the "Arran issue," and I feel like that's the perfect description of the main lot without spoiling anything. It was devastating and heart-breaking watching not just two of them but everybody involved going through that experience. They are faced with many enemies, not just the succubus but the enemies from inside, and we are yet to see how they will deal with everything and, hopefully, emerge victorious. Ancestors, prophecies, and curses are still involved, but I hope we will get the perfect conclusion of this loose Arthurian retelling in Book 4. I am rooting for Veyka and Arran and want them to have their HEA.

This is the third book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown, a dark romantasy series that is a loose reimagining of the Arthurian legend. Tropes include a stabby FMC, touch her and die, mental health rep, fated mates, found family, healing & comfort and a plus size FMC. This is a dark fantasy romance so please see content warnings for dark themes and explicit content.

So there’s a pretty major part of this book focused on something I can’t say because it would spoil. We’re just going to call it “Arran’s issue” in this review.

The Lovely: As with the prior books, I love love the characters and their relationships. We did get to see a lot more of Cyara in this book, and we meet a new character I adore. But, back to the MMC and FMC. The author makes you care about them on a deep level and you become invested in their lives, their relationships and their happiness. The MCs’ relationship in this bit is tumultuous at best due to Arran’s issue, to the point I was worried for them. But their relationship feels more realistic this way - messy and complex.

Rating: 5/5 Stars 3/5 Flames

Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and am leaving this review voluntarily. The last book hurt me several times over and left me sitting on my bed crying. This book was more like death by a thousand cuts - slow and gradual - due to how Arran’s issue impacted his and Veyka’s relationship. Oh, and while the ending was a nail biting cliffhanger, exactly, it still wrenched the knife in my heart. The fourth and final book of Veyka and Arran’s story will release late this fall, with a couple spin offs planned for side characters. If you like dark romantic fantasy with strong character and relationship development, and that hits you in the feels, you would like this book.

📖: Court of Vines and Vipers (Secrets of the Faerie Crown, Book 3)
🐍 Releasing April 30!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫

Court of Vines and Vipers is the third book of the series. Our MCs continue on their path for answers and preparations for an ancient evil coming for Anwynn. More details of a prophecy are unveiled as well events of the past and their connection to the darkness. Grief, loss, and mistrust divides the kingdoms and the greatest threats still lie ahead.

This penultimate installment explores the dynamics of the characters and their allies. We see how relationships have shifted among the group and how much Veyka has come into her own. I loved seeing her growth throughout the series and the slow acceptance of her destiny.

This story is full of anguish paired with loss and trauma not easily forgotten. Basically, Emberly knows exactly how to prey on all my emotions.

In this world, magic always has a price. Is Veyka is prepared to pay it? And will it be enough to save everything and everyone she holds dear? There are no promises made and so many fears left unspoken. The stakes are so high moving forward and I cannot deal 😅

In Court of Vines and Vipers, Emberly delivers an emotionally stirring story centered around a bad@ass FMC and unyielding and scorching 🌶️romance. I am holding my breath until I can reunite with these beloved characters in the final installment!

Huge thanks to Emberly for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review

This is book 3 in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series and books 1 & 2 absolutely need to be read first to understand the plot.

Court of Vines and Vipers was such a rollercoaster of emotions. Veyka is a strong AF character and this book really pushed her through the fire to become an even more formidable version of herself.

Arran and Veyka face their share of struggles in this book and I think it makes both of them stronger because of it.

Very interested to see what happens in the next book.

Thank you so much to the author for the chance to read an ARC!

I thought this would be the final book, so my expectations were different for it. I changed my rating from a 3 star to a 4 star for a simple fact: ever since I finished reading, I've been thinking about it. About the story and the characters, and how I want more of it :(

I really like the characters and believe that they have great potential for more, but I do think that the steady growth made in the previous two books was not seen in this one. There was a lot of back and forth with Veyka and Arran's relationship that I didn't feel like it was needed. I understand that it was done so that we could see that they belong together because they choose to, not just because they're mates; but I didn't think it was needed.

Plus, we get a lot of mentions of their past trauma but not a lot of context to understand it... Why was Veyka subjected to such abuse? Why did they think that was the way to force her powers to come out? It didn't make sense to me... And Arran's past trauma is really brushed off, we never even see him telling Veyka about his brother.

I'd like for the characters to be more developed, especially the villains (because there's very little that we know about them). But other than that, the story has a great plot, very typical of a fantasy series, and it excels in keeping us enthralled in it. We're always wondering what's next!

That being said, I'm curious to see how this story ends and I believe people should give this series a chance :)

Thank you to Netgalley, the editor and the author, for allowing me to read this book and immerse myself into this incredible world. Can't wait to see more of it!

So much happened in this. Veyka is reeling from Arran's injury and needing to decide where to go and be to do what's best for their kingdom. It was emotional and full of so much self reflection for Veyka. I liked seeing snippets from Cyara's POV as well, it was a nice shift in terms of getting outside of their heads.

Veyka and Arran are really inside themselves through this one, figuring out their purpose, but also who they are and want to be. It was really raw and just such a heart wrenching experience to read. They both go through their own trials and hope to come out on the other side together.

The wheels of the prophecy are turning and the world is changing. Darkness is encroaching on their lands whether they're ready for it or not. Will they get what they need to fight back? Will they be able to find themselves amongst magic found and lost?

Ahhhhhhhhh!

Just loosing interest with this… not entirely sure what exactly it is but this book everything felt so tiring in the way it’s very repetitive. The romance between Arran and Veyka it’s always the same thing- the intense sexual tensions but the hesitancy of emotional connection and with certain events affecting Arran, the reader just gets thrown back into the dynamics of the first book. Plot wise I found it very interesting to read more about Parys and Gwen in the beginning but then we don’t hear about them until literally the last page!! The whole revelation that they discovered was extremely slow and predictable, with the entire book dedicated to finding out about the past and the prophecies the ending honestly was very underwhelming. I just wanna know about Gwen… the rest of veyka and arran? It’s tiresome and overplayed at this point.

Court of Vines and Vipers by Emberly Ash is the third installment in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. I would call this series an NA romantasy that would appeal to fans of JLA and Sarah J.Maas.
I was so excited to see the third book after I finished the second one. Even though the middle books of any series tend to frustrate me because they always have so much trouble in them to solve in the last book. I enjoyed book three however it wrapped up enough of the last installment's drama by the end to keep me happy.
Veyka and Arran are going through a lot as a couple in this book. There's a horrible threat seeking to devour their kingdom and defeating them will come at great personal cost. Veyka struggles without her partner in the beginning and even when they are reunited things are not the same between them. It was interesting to see how their relationship developed through all these struggles. Even though it's over-dramatized, in the best way, it makes their problems seem like a real marriage.
It was nice to get to read things from Cyara's point of view as well because it broke up all the romantic angst.
Loads of action and sword fighting this is a fun series.
I enjoy all the nods to Arthurian legends all throughout as a bonus.
Thank you to Netgalley for this arc. This review was given voluntarily and all views expressed are my own.

This is the third book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series and it picks up right after the end of book 2. I absolutely binged this series and loved about 95% of it. The beginning was a little slow, but once it began to pick up, I could not and did not want to put it down.

Veyka has definitely progressed more as the series has gone on, and has matured, which I appreciate. At the beginning of the series, she was really immature, and was a bit annoying at times, but now she has grown into the FMC and queen that she should have been, and needed to be when the series started and her life began to change.

Both of the main characters had their own struggles in this book, Arran's being a big part of it, they did their best to overcome everything, which made them even stronger.

I cannot wait for the fourth book in the series and have added it to my TBR.

Thank you Emberly Ash and Netgalley for the copy of this book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Oh I am pretty sure this book made me go bald. The amount of times I was pulling at my hair in frustration... I can't even begin to count them.

This book in the series was an absolutely WILD RIDE to say the least!
I don't think I've been this stressed out for characters in a good while. I seriously felt the pain and emotional blows while reading.

I could not put this book down, no matter how hard I tried. It is a soul gripping story that just demands your attention at all times.

I'm a sucker for world building and this series has that down to a T. If you love the depth of Throne of Glass, this seriously runs parallel in all aspects. Well f*cking done, Emberly. Slow. Damn. Clap.

Just stab me with one of Veyka's daggers and consider me DONE. I don't know how I'm going to survive this cliffhanger... But I'll try.
Gods above, I'll try.

Well if you are a crier, have your tissues ready because Emberly just knows how to gut you 😂 She takes you on a wild ride in this one and with an ending leaving you on the edge of your seat.

Court of Vines and Vipers is Book 3 in this Arthurian retelling, the Secrets of the Faerie Court series. It picks up immediately after the devastating events in Throne of Air and Darkness.

Veyka is hurting and she must learn how to stand on her own and learn to control her powers against the threats facing her kingdom. While Arran faces issues of his own.

We get a new point of view from Cyara in this story as someone that has cared for Veyka a long time and hurts to see her struggle.

Veyka must learn the truth of the prophecy while strengthening her power but will it be too late?

DNF’d.

So sad I had to DNF this because I LOVED the first two books but this one was dragging so bad I found myself looking to pick up other books to avoid reading this. It just dragged on so long and everyone was just much too whiney. All that aside the writing style seemed different in this one in a few different ways and because of that it made it very hard for me to follow and not get confused on what was going on.

I think we all saw this coming - Emberly Ash's latest release gets 5 stars from me. The way she breaks my heart, puts it back together so it only vaguely resembles what it once was, and keeps me coming back for more is truly an art form. The quality of Emberly's writing is flawless. How she's not as well-known as SJM is beyond me.

The dedications in each of the books in this series heal a little broken part of me every time I read them.

Court of Vines and Vipers took me on the angstiest of angsty journeys. Veyka is my queen. The way Emberly conveys the rawness of Veyka's emotions and the torment she goes through as she must carry on is masterful.

One of the things I love about this series is that we're always on a journey. Things are discovered, accomplished, defeated, suffered, and yet it's never stagnant or repetitive. We're always moving in a way that feels natural. The character development draws us in so we're invested in what happens, we're invested in their thoughts and feelings.

Did I get anchored in my emotions from the very beginning? Yes, I did.
Did I cry at least once reading this book? Yes, I did.
Did Emberly Ash bathe in those tears? Unequivocally yes.

I have at least 25 highlights from this read. Here are two of my favorite quotes:
Open your eyes. A voice - a command that felt like the space between breaths as it washed over my soul and filled in the cracks.
---
Blood spewed. I drank my wine.

I recommend these books to everyone I know, and if we don't know each other, let me introduce myself...

Breathing erratically until book four is released.

Dang it’s always hard to review books in a series without spoiling anything in any of the other books! 3rd installment of a four book series. Picked up right where the cliffhanger in book 2 leaves off. Some twists and turns I did not see coming 👀

This book felt a little more emotional to me and was definitely a wild ride. Crown of Earth and Sky was the very first ARC I ever read so this series has a special place in my little bookish heart. Def pic it up if these tropes are your thing 👇🏼

💚Touch Her and Die
💚Faeries
💚Shifters
💚Elemental magic
💚Spice
💚Enemies/hate to Love
💚Arranged Marriage
💚Fated Mates
💚Political Intrigue

I’m continually surprised at how much I’m drawn into these books, and this one was no different. However, I found myself skipping pretty huge chunks of text where characters pine away over the same issues without revealing anything new or interesting. I think an editor would be really helpful to cut out some of these moody bits that drag. I enjoyed the lore, the Veyka/Arran dynamic, and the setting. But if my leg is broken and I’m trapped in a monster bear cave, DO NOT TOUCH ME. NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR ROMANCE.

The third instalment of Emberly Ash's Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, ‘Court of Vines and Vipers,’ picks up right where the second book left off, plunging readers back into the midst of Veyka's journey as she grapples with Arran's injury and the looming threat of the succubus. Amidst these challenges, Veyka must also embrace her role as the High Queen of Annwyn.

While the penultimate book in a series can sometimes feel like mere setup for the final act, ‘Court of Vines and Vipers’ defies this expectation. Brimming with action and intrigue, the narrative captivates from start to finish. Once again, I found myself unable to tear away from the enthralling story.

Veyka remains the heart of the tale, her character arc expertly crafted across the series. Each instalment unveils a new facet of her journey, from navigating grief and trauma to embracing love and now, in ‘Court of Vines and Vipers,’ taking a solo leap forward. Her struggle with self-belief and duty amidst personal turmoil showcases her profound growth since the first book.

Arran's struggle with his injury and its impact on their relationship is heartbreaking and adds a poignant layer to the narrative. Their ups and downs are portrayed realistically, without being glossed over or instantly resolved, making them one of my favourite fictional couples.

Furthermore, the introduction of Cyara's POV adds a refreshing perspective to the story. In a world where Veyka and Arran often find themselves isolated from one another; Cyara's viewpoint enriches the overall storytelling experience.

I loved this book, and the series is quickly becoming one of my favourite romantasy reads. Now begins the nerve-wracking wait for November and the final instalment of this enthralling series. And with a title like ‘Queen of Blood and Vengeance,’ I have no doubt it is going to be epic!

Thank you NetGalley and Emberly Ash for the opportunity to read this ARC.

That was quite the ride. So up until this point, I haven't left a review of the previous two books. I think mostly because I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about the series. I knew I liked it. And I knew I liked it enough to recommend it to others, but I wasn't completely in love with it.

While the overall story/retelling is a well thought out idea, the writing itself could be clunky at times, and I sometimes found myself rolling my eyes. There were many, many grammar mistakes and misspellings throughout the books that were annoying and sometimes stopped me in my tracks. Between the sometime confusing exposition dumps and a constant overuse of certain character descriptions/reminders, such as "my considerable weight", ""my goldstone", "the brutality", "his height", "the/his/my beast", I would sometimes have to take a minute. It just felt like every two seconds there was a reference to something that was well established long before and it coming up time after time, was starting to get annoying. I know some people complain that the reference to Veyka's weight was talked about a lot and got annoying, but it wasn't just that that was mentioned a lot, there were plenty other things/topics repeated way too often too. Like, while I thoroughly appreciated a FMC that broke from the normal body type, I didn't really care for the constant (constant) description of it.

Anyway. Aside from the grammar, I do feel for the characters and love the love between them. It's giving found family vibes 🥺 and it makes me all the more scared for when the final battle comes long. And though some of the "steamy scenes" were not entirely for me, I could appreciate it all the same.

I'm excited for the final book to come out. Already preordered!

With this being the third book in the series, I feel like things are coming together. At the same time though, it feels like the resolution is also more and more further. In book two, we see Veyka finally coming into herself with her accepting her powers and her bond with Arran. However, instead of furthering this relationship both romantic and political, we are thrown right back to point zero.
While I can see why Arran’s storyline happened, all magic has a cost after all, I fail to see how it benefitted the story. Pushing Veyka’s own character arc forward? Probably. That’s how it’s sold to us, however I’m not so sure.
The struggle he has to face, and as a consequence them as a couple have to face, are the same of book one. And while this could have been a great opportunity for us to really get to know Arran, I feel like we stayed on the surface. The things that made him Arran, his traumas and experiences that forced the male in 300 years, we’ve yet to know them. Truly.
The resolution of his storyline was also very anticlimactic.
The best thing about this book was the found family. Truly all of these characters shone through the pages. I’m so attached to all of them and I love how they’re all either coming into themselves as well or they’re taking a more central role.
Things are getting more and more complicated so I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I really liked the first 2 books, but this one was quite boring and it was more filler than anything.

I don't even know what to say, there were a few interesting parts, but mostly I was bored. The second book was so good, with Veyka questioning everything she knew about Arthur and the humans and I'm not even gonna talk about the ending! And while this book picks up exactly after that, there was quite a little bit of ending involved, and for such a lengthy book, the plot barely moved.

I'm glad we got to meet Arran's homeland and family, but I would have liked to get to know more about them, and usually I feel like the second characters could benefit from a bit more developement.

All in all, I still want to know what's gonna happen next, and hopefully the next volume will be more interesting, because I really can't finish series where there are many books with fillers instead of plot, and it would be a shame, because the story itself was really interesting

I’m low key kind of pissed. The first two books were incredible and this one… one of the biggest issues was Arran losing his memories. He gets them back in the most random, anticlimactic way possible!! LIKE ARE YOU JOKING!!??? They’re just in the middle of a conversation, he says one thing, and magically remembers all?? That shit was so confusing to me. Like, we didn’t even get a moment in Arran’s POV explaining how it felt??? Disappointed. I LOVE this story and this author, but this felt like a HUGE misstep. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and of course the spice is great with Arran and Veyka.
