The man who destroyed her life may be the only one who can save it.

Seven years ago, Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) lost everything she knew when a raid on a wagon train tore her from her family. As the memories of her past faded to nothing more than vague shadows, Maggie adapted—marrying a Comanche warrior, having a baby, and rebuilding her life. But in one terrible battle, the U.S. Cavalry destroys that life, and she is taken captive again, this time by those who call themselves her people. Forced into a world she wants nothing to do with, Eyes-Like-Sky’s only hope of protecting her child may be an engagement to the man who killed her husband.

Enrolled in West Point to escape his overbearing father, Captain Garret Ramsey has graduated and finds himself assigned to the Texas frontier, witnessing the brutal Indian War in which both sides commit atrocities. Plagued by guilt for his own role, Garret seeks redemption by taking responsibility for the woman he widowed and her baby. Though he is determined to do whatever it takes to protect them, is he willing to risk everything for a woman whose heart is buried in a grave? Or is there hope she might heal to love once more?

Texas Forsaken is a Christian historical romance rich in faith and history.

Shindelar tackles two worlds--Comanche and the wilds of Texas, to create a unique and captivating tale. The character development is well-done and the settings make the reader feel like they are transported there in real life. I appreciated Garrett's honorable character and Sky's devotion and loyalty to her child. The tension, which keeps you reading until the end, is well-written.

FAITH ELEMENTS:
Characters pray and thank God, a circuit rider makes an appearance, and characters experience immense spiritual growth. This truly was a beautiful part of the story.

VIOLENCE:
Shindelar does not shy away from the horrors of war, yet does so tastefully. Torture is vaguely described; it is briefly mentioned that women were s3xually assaulted and murdered; raids are mentioned; characters are wounded; a character is injured in the War Between States.

Due to the realistic way this is portrayed--and again, Shindelar does so tastefully--more sensitive readers should keep the amount of violence in mind.

ROMANCE:
Characters kiss and a married couple cuddles in a prison cell.

OTHER CONTENT of NOTE:
It is implied in the past a courting couple gets handsy and that the man regrets it; a woman is unfairly called a whore.

Unfortunately, there is a fade-to-black scene, which I did not know the book contained when I signed up to read it. The female character requests the act in not so many words, and the scene cuts after the male character lowers her to the blanket.

There are five Dear Gods that are impossible to tell if is a Lord's name in vain or a prayer.

CONCLUSION:
Texas Forsaken blends faith, history, and a unique plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very final page.

An exciting start to the Lone Star Redemption series!

I'm conflicted about this book. On one hand, I loved the first half (it seemed like an old western movie). On the other hand, the second half with its setting change and marital discord wasn't my favorite.

As far as the characters went, I really felt for Sky and loved how she'd do anything to take care of Little Star. Garret frustrated me sometimes because he said he'd be patient with Sky, then he'd turn around and be completely impatient. But he did seem very human.

The plot had plenty of high stakes, western-style action, and drama to keep me reading right along. I appreciated the faith content the author included, but there were a few uses of God's name that may or may not have been quite reverent, and there were a couple of very mild fade-to-black scenes.

Overall, I found Texas Forsaken to be an interesting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, historical romance, and western novels.

Such a beautiful story of sacrificial love to withstand every trial. I was immediately drawn in by the connection between Eyes-Like-Sky and Garret and loved watching their relationship change and grow. The setting and events were less familiar to me, but Sherry Shindelar's skillful handling of history and descriptive language thoroughly brought it to life. One of those books that kept me up way too late, but I have no regrets! I'm so impressed by this debut novel and cannot wait to read the next in the series.

What a stunning cover! It pulls me in and sets the scene.

Texas Forsaken” is an interesting story with strong historical features and lovely faith elements. It’s very intense in parts and I sought for lighter elements here and there to ease the tension a bit.

Eyes-Like-Sky is such an interesting character. It was easy to empathize with her, but difficult for me to connect with her fully because (to be honest) she bothered me. Garret was much easier to connect with. I love his patience and understanding. It was rewarding to watch their relationship grow.

This story is different than much of the Christian fiction I read. It has a bit more violence and sensitive elements. That’s not to say it’s all in-your-face, but in general, it is more than I’m fully comfortable.

First Line: Eyes-Like-Sky’s arms ached.

This was such a deep story, based on true people and historical events that happened. This was such a good read! While heading for a new life in the west, Maggie's family was attacked in a wagon train raid and she was kidnapped and became Eyes-Like-Sky, and eventually taken as a wife. She was treated well by her husband and assimilated herself into being a part of the tribe. Captain Ramsey, not wanting to follow in his fathers footsteps, enrolled at West Point and has been assigned to the Texas frontier where he finds himself in the midst of the Indian War. The decision or life or death only takes a split second and when he kills Dancing Eagle, the husband of Eyes-Like-Sky and realizes he almost also killed this woman and small baby he is besides himself. He knows his life has changed and will forever be changed when he makes a promise to himself and this woman. He will do everything to protect her and her now fatherless child, Little Star. With the US also on the brink of the Civil War, he may have just made a promise that will be impossible to keep. This novel had so much to it! So many characters and storylines and it was all wound beautifully! I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to more in this series. Oh my goodness, this is one of the richest historical novels I've ever read. I know these characters will stay with me. Sherry Shindelar is a master at weaving in setting details in a natural way that doesn't bog the story down in the slightest. Her metaphors and similes are brilliant. The characters are nuanced and deep. The story sucked me right in and kept me reading until the very end. I laughed. I cried. I swooned. I learned more about history. This one had better win some awards because it is absolutely deserving. I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Texas Forsaken by Sherry Shindelar is the first book in the Lone Star Redemption Series, set in 1860s Texas during the Indian wars and the onset of the Civil War. Maggie Logan, also known as Eyes-Like-Sky, was kidnapped by Comanche raiders as a child and raised among them. She falls in love with an Indian warrior, marries him, and has a daughter named Little Star.

Garret, a cavalry captain, inadvertently kills Eyes-Like-Sky's warrior husband during a raid on the Comanche tribe. He is full of regret, and he vows to protect her and her child. Maggie struggles to let go of her Comanche past as she struggles with the turmoil and heartbreak. Despite the challenges, she remains resilient, with Garret showing unwavering patience and faith.

As the characters' emotions unfold, romance blossoms between Garret and Sky within the harsh realities of Texas life. The novel skillfully intertwines themes of loyalty, promises, and overcoming past expectations. Garret's commitment to the well-being of Sky and Little Star, despite personal sacrifices, is admirable. The characters are well developed and the historical backdrop enhances the overall story. Sky's journey towards faith and strength resonates throughout with Garrett having a big part of this growth. The developing romance is portrayed tastefully, though it may contain mature themes suited for adult readers without being too graphic.

Texas Forsaken offers an engaging and uplifting historical romance, leaving readers looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Eyes-Like-Sky has adapted to life. Rescued from the tribe who kidnapped her from her family traveling by wagon train, she has married a Comanche warrior. Their family is complete now that they have their baby daughter, Little Star. However, Dancing Eagle is killed when a group of Texas Rangers and U.S. Cavalry members attacks her tribe. And Eyes-Like-Sky and her daughter are now taken again, by the soldiers who wish to return her to her family.

Captain Garret Ramsey is horrified to have shot Eyes-Like-Sky's husband. She is heartbroken and grieving, and he doesn't think that there's anything that will help her. Yet as they spend time together, they begin to notice that they might just have a connection.

With the Civil War brewing, Garret and Eyes-Like-Sky may be separated. Can their love survive?

Sherry Shindelar's marvelous "Texas Forsaken" is a rich and rewarding read. With elements that history buffs will recognize from Cynthia Ann Parker's story, readers will come away satisfied with a beautiful story based on real history. Wonderful characters and an incredible read. Definitely 5 stars!

Texas forsaken, sherry Shindelar
It was interesting,I looked forward to reading it.
Here are a few things that made me give 3 stars instead of 4.
Sky was very annoying for 3/4th of the book with her attitude towards Garret. He was beyond patient and loving. The author kept sky repeating the phrase “she clenched her fists and dug her nails into her palms “ sounds petty, but irritating . Also, there was no closure for Garret and his overbearing father.
I did like the historical correct account of the war, and the few references to their faith in God.
But here’s the real reason for 3 stars. ABRUPT AND SUDEN ENDING. EVEN AN EPILOGUE would have helped. I will give this author Sherry Shindelor another chance.

Texas Forsaken is an impressive beginning to the Lone Star Redemption series. Set in 1860s Texas, Eyes-Like-Sky and Garret’s story is an emotional saga of resilience, courage, and redemption. In this story, the author does an excellent job of conveying the emotions of her characters. I could feel the anguish and outrage Eyes-Like-Sky felt for losing her husband, her home, and her freedom to have any say about what happens to her. This heartbreaking but also heartwarming story drew me in from the beginning and kept me turning pages to see how it would all play out. The combination of a well-crafted plot with a few twists and surprises, wonderful characters, sweet romance, a genuine western setting, well-researched history, and an encouraging faith thread results in an entertaining, inspiring historical romance read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Texas Forsaken by Sherry Shindelar is a great read. This Christian Historical Romance is packed with adventure in the Old West. I knew when I saw this book on the list for review that I had to read it. The cover is intriguing, and that alone draws you in. I am a real sucker for the Old West and the stories that involve it. With that said this was just a great book to read. From the beginning to the end, I was enthralled. I had such a good time reading this story. There are some raw parts, but they are done with the right touch, that is to show the seriousness, yet not in a explicit way. There is one sensual scene, I did see at least one reviewer had a little issue with it, but it is in the context of marriage and then right after they are wed.
Eyes Like Sky (AKA Maggie Logan) is the main female character in this book. She was taken from her family after the Comanche raided her home and killed them. She goes through many hard trials, but she has accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She relies on her faith to get her through the many horrible situations that she endures. When she was first taken, she was passed around, so unfortunately that is one of the most horrific things anyone would have to endure, yet she never lost faith in her Creator.
Garrett Ramsey is a captain in the U.S. Cavalry at that time. He has left home more to get as far away from his father, who likes to try to control his life. In a tough battle that he and his men take on, he kills Eyes Like Sky’s husband, of course not knowing that he was her husband until afterward.
Garrett feels as if he must do something for Eyes Like Sky when her uncle comes to take her away, back to Texas. Her uncle is very bigoted and sees Native Americans as nothing but savage animals. He wants her to go home with him, but he will have no one of her Comanche ways or anything that ties her to the Comanche. This is where Garrett comes to feel responsibility for her, because she is protecting her child and possibly without his help they will be separated. It is only a feigned engagement and then they can figure out from there what to do. Will they fall in love or will it just be a relationship of convenience.
Eyes Like Sky has been hurt by so many men. Even though Garrett, killed her husband, but there is something that she sees in his eyes. A quote from the book says, “his brown eyes looked deep into her soul.” It makes the reader think about Jesus how He loves us, and He truly can see into our souls that He created. It also makes the reader think that Eyes Like Sky sees love in Garrett's eyes, though they may not even fall in love.
Ya’ll Texas is home to me, so this book holds a dear spot in my heart just for that reason. Of course, as I stated before it is not just the things I mentioned earlier, it is a really good book. It is such a story about resilience and how clinging to Jesus, we can get through anything, but without Him we would truly die. If you are a fan of Westerns and historical romance, this book will have you reading all night until it is finished.
I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

Eyes-Like-Sky is the wife of a Comanche brave, mother to a precious baby girl, Little Star. Any memories of her life before her family’s wagon train was torn apart by a Comanche attack have been buried deep. But violence finds Eyes-Like-Sky again when Dancing Eagle, her husband, is killed in a battle with the U.S. Cavalry. Captain Garret Ramsey, the man responsible for Dancing Eagle’s death, takes Eyes-Like-Sky and Little Star back to the cavalry camp, where the process of tracking down her family begins.

Eyes-Like-Sky – Maggie Logan, in her former life – wants nothing to do with the bewildering and confining ways of “her” people, and she certainly isn’t interested in being “civilized” and “polished” by her overbearing uncle who comes to claim her. When she flees to escape her uncle, Garret goes after her. He promises to protect her and Little Star, and they agree to marry. But a marriage of necessity isn’t the same as a loving relationship. When Garret realizes he’s fallen for Sky, he fears she may never be able to return his love, may never stop mourning Dancing Eagle. And with civil war about to break out, will he truly be able to keep Sky and Little Star safe?

What a marvelously written story! It reminded me a bit of Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love in the way Eyes-Like-Sky kept drawing near to Garret but fearing that acknowledging her feelings for him meant being unfaithful to Dancing Eagle’s memory and the way Garret kept hoping Sky would learn to return his love, painful though the process of getting there was for him. Sometimes they were so close to really sharing how they felt, and then one or both of them pulled back. They each feel like they’re giving up so much for the marriage, they sometimes lose sight of the sacrifices the other is making.

We see Sky in particular struggling with her faith. The God in whom Sky placed her trust as a child let Dancing Eagle be taken from her. He seems distant, harsh. Sky struggles to trust that He cares about what happens to her and Little Star now. She’s lost one husband in battle, and it’s a challenge for her to keep faith that God will now see Garret safely through the war.

Like the actual history, this story has moments that are difficult to process. We read of the Comanches’ brutal treatment of captives. People are injured and killed in battle. Sky must defend herself against a soldier who assumes that she’s “that kind” of woman. But none of it is gratuitous. It’s a necessary part of the story, and Shindelar handles it deftly.

All told, Texas Forsaken is a beautiful picture of sacrificial love and redemption set against the harsh backdrop of war and the Texas frontier. If you love a well-told story that will make you laugh and weep and cheer, characters who grow in their faith through difficulties, and a happily ever after romance, this book belongs on your summer TBR.

Gripping, realistic and second chances bring this story to life. The author does an excellent job of describing clothes of this era. I could picture the war paint , turquoise necklaces and buckskin clothing worn by the Comanche people in in this story. This was a particularly intriguing story for me as I am part Comanche. I have heard how savage they can be even though it is difficult to read about. I appreciate the way the author writes a story about a very famous person in history.

Eyes-Like-Sky is excited when her husband comes home from a battle. Faded in her memory is the person she once was. After being captured she became accustomed to the new way of life and embraced her warrior husband. Their sweet little daughter was precious to both of them. When an attack happens Eyes-Like -Sky finds herself a widow. Once again she is captured but by soldiers. Her hatred toward the man responsible for her Dancing Eagle’s death is very evident.

Garret has his hands full while keeping a watch over Eyes-Like -Sky. He is still trying to figure her out but has this sense that there is more to her story. He regrets her husband’s death but now they must move on. Did he do the right thing by keeping her hostage? Garret is a good man who regrets killing her husband. Now he must do his best to look after her and keep her safe.

The author captures emotions well as both of our main characters deal with the trials ahead. I wonder how it felt to be taken from your home only to be paraded around while strangers come to see if you could be their missing relative? It may be hard to understand why Eyes-Like-Sky fights to be taken back to the Comanches. The author does a good job of keeping this story close to the true account of the person this book is based on. There are a few differences but it also shows how faith can help when struggling with your future.

As I read the book a thought came to mind. Why do people want to change others? Eyes-Like-Sky is Comanche and wants to remain that. Her heart desires to go back to her people. However others are trying to make her rejoin family she doesn’t remember. Her happiness seems to upset some when she fights to be herself. In comparison we do that at times to others. We don’t like the way they dress or their culture and try to change them. I like this sentence from the story which days, ‘A man should be judged for his own actions.”

I won’t tell you the rest of the story because readers need to see how God works in the main characters lives. This has been one of the best fictional accounts of Comanche I have ever read. It will stay with me forever.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

“I want no part of your settlements and civilization.”
“Done turned savage herself.”
Eyes-Like-Sky is a bitter captive to the pre-Civil War days American army. When the Comanches have decided to deter the white men from their territory by sheer terror of raids, the army fights back. In one such retaliation, Eyes-Like-Sky’s husband is killed, and she and her baby are taken captive by the white man. But… Eyes Like Sky vows they will never convert her back to her original Texan roots. “‘I don’t have an English name. I’m Comanche.’ Maggie. The word throbbed in her head. She would never be Maggie again.”

I enjoyed being challenged by this book to remember that sometimes we people think others need to look, think, talk, dress, or act like us to be acceptable. “Those vultures. Trying to change her name. Taking her clothes. They’d take her whole past if they could. Turn her into some pale-face city girl who’d never seen a Comanche.” Shindelar writes in such a way as to show both race’s possible POV’s, and one can better understand the customs and clothing of each, and even the distrust each holds for the other.

This is definitely a slow-burn romance. Very slow! It takes a long time for Eyes Like Sky especially to trust Captain Garrett Ramsey. We wonder whether Ramsey can or will keep her safe. We also wonder whether Eyes Like Sky will stay with the white men long enough to find out.

All of this happens on the Eve of the Civil War. How does the time period add to the unrest of the country and the army camps?

Both Ramsey and Eyes Like Sky have some familiarity with the Bible. How will faith play into their relationship, or will they both even choose to develop a faith? “Why had God allowed her to lose everything, almost everything, again? God loved her. He was a personal God, not just an all-powerful creator beyond the stars. He’d sent His Son for her. The truth had permeated her childhood and embedded itself in her heart. But where was that love now? As cold and distant as the stars.”

And a baby. Add a baby to a story, and there’s bound to be a softening of a character or two. Plus, I personally think that attracts readers to the novel. I can almost imagine holding that little one myself!

Possibly one of the biggest questions the author brings up, is when are we going to stop seeing a group of people as guilty of the wrongs of a few or even some, and judge people on their hearts instead? “A man should be judged for his own actions. Not his people’s.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I also purchased an ecopy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Talk about capturing my heart and bringing a vivid world to life! Texas Forsaken truly has everything you’d ever want in a historical fiction and it certainly stole my heart.

The beginning starts out pretty intense as we are inserted in a very tumultuous time in a very primitive place: the fight between America and the natives in south Texas before the succession. Heartache turned into crushing blows of pure anguish as I got further into the story, the tragedies coming quick and sudden.

One thing is for sure: Sky is a fighter! No matter what she was faced with she continued to push and fight for herself and her daughter. The immense grief that she carries after the death of her husband, not to mention having to mother her infant daughter, while fighting for their freedom is truly the stuff of nightmares. Yet, she continues to revolt with more strength and determination than most of the soldiers that surround her.

Garret feels like no matter what he does he’ll never measure up, but what he doesn’t realize is just how amazing he actually is. He is the image of honor and loyalty and truly the light in this story. Together they make a formidable pair and witnessing the development of their relationship is stunning.

The imagery is positively breathtaking and the writing flows so naturally that it was easy to get lost in this world. There were moments that I had to stop and take a breath because the scene was so intense, the writing was that powerful. I practically read this novel in one sitting and savored every moment. I cannot recommend this novel enough!

I really struggled with this story and this particular book. It is really drama dense and the story feels sluggish to me, though I like the main characters just fine. The story that this echos of the young girls taken captive by Indian raids in Texas is really quite familiar to me since I live close to where Cynthia Ann Parker was captured. So, it isn’t the story that is hard but rather way the drama of it all is presented. There are no bright spots in the story and for fiction, I need that in a drama dense story.

I feel the character of Eyes-Like-Sky is pushed to quickly for it be an enjoyable transformation. I think is it accurate that she had only one person willing to allow her the space she needed to acclimate to the new society, yet again, but I found it hard to enjoy the story of the change. I like the grit and determination of her character and her ability to really focus on what she is desiring to accomplish, nothing standing in her way.

I felt like the religious addition to Eyes-Like-Sky’s character was out of place. I would have enjoyed it more if it was added in differently but I do like that it was included.

Overall, this was a fine read. I didn’t mind it but it definitely wasn’t my true cup of tea. I decided to review this since JustReadTours needed more reviews and it was about an era of Texas history that was difficult but I am familiar with. It will definite sit better with those who really enjoy tales of great drama and constant battle between character.

Wow, what a story, one that really gripped me from the beginning and had me wondering throughout how these people would overcome their pasts, make peace with their present, and live for the future. Eyes-Like-the-Sky was ripped away from her family when the Comanche attacked them some seven years ago. When we first meet her, she has already acclimated to her new people, the Comanche, with a husband she loves and a baby she adores. Her memories of that horrible experience that ripped her from her birth family so cruelly are all like shadows in her mind. Until her world is upended again.

This time by a white man, Captain Garret Ramsey. He tears her world asunder again, but he cannot get her out of his mind. There are many trials, especially as they are trying to get her to go to what is left of her original family. But Sky has been with the Comanches too long, and she is grieving for the husband she loved. Garret steps in to be her protector, hers and her little girl's, to be her husband. However, there is a lot of healing that needs to take place before they can get past their traumatic pasts and make a future. And the Civil War is on the horizon.

I really enjoyed this fictional story, that was based on an historical captive woman and what she went through. I cannot imagine the horror of being ripped away from family, not once but twice. This story will be sticking with me for a while.

"You might as well put a bullet in me. You stole my husband's life. My child will never know her father. . . . . . . I want no part of your settlements and civilization."

Eyes-Like-Sky may have not wanted the shelter and protection that U. S. Calvary Captain Garret Ramsey was offering, but she had her infant daughter, Little Star, to consider. Having lived with the Comanche tribe for seven years following her initial captivity, she had truly loved her warrior husband and was not at all eager or willing to return to the name Maggie Logan or all that it represented. Admittedly she and the Captain Ramsey had bonded in a way that she never expected; he made her feel safe.

When Eyes-Like-Sky's overbearing family member arrives at the fort prepared to whisk her away, she and Garret force themselves to make a life-changing decision, "for better and for worse" . . . . the question being, could the ruse possibly work? Eyes-Like-Sky had very little of her heart left to love again and Garret deserved better.

"Little Star needs you, Sky. And so do I . . . . "

Integrating a wide span of historical and cross-cultural particulars, the author provides readers with a birds-eye view of what Texas could have been like in the 1860's when battles were fought between enemies that were seen and ideologies that remained unseen, nevertheless managing to alter the entire fabric of the country at that time . . . placing Garret and Eyes-Like-Sky irrevocably in the middle.

Enjoy this epic journey of love and loss, faith and doubt, triumph and tragedy . . . eventually rewarding this unlikely pairing with heart and . . . home.

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres. Texas Forsaken by Sherry Shindelar is the latest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Lone Star Redemption Series.

The setting is 1860's in Texas. Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) has rebuilt her life in the past Seven Years since she lost EVERYTHING when a Wagon Train Raid took her away from her family. Maggie has married a Comanche Warrior and had a baby (Little Star) and she is at a happy place in life. Life takes a turn when she is taken captive by the US Cavalry and her husband is killed. She feels her only way to protect her child is to marry the man who killed her husband. Captain Garret Ramsey has been assigned the Texas Frontier and has witnessed all the recent battles. He feels led to protect Maggie and her child. Will Maggie open her heart to allow Garret to take care of her and her child? Will there be a romance between Maggie and Garret?

I truly enjoyed this book from the very beginning. The Historical times and events were very interesting and intriguing. My heart broke for Maggie Logan for going through loss not once, but twice. I LOVE that Garret wanted to protect Maggie and her daughter and gave his word to do so. Maggie is too filled with Gried and Anger at first, but watching her heart change and soften toward Garret was heartwarming. I LOVE that the characters have faith and belief in God. The book is one about Forgiveness, Life Changes, God's plan, and Second Chances. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance! FANTASTIC BOOK!

Texas Forsaken is a wonderful novel about a woman held captive with the Indians who then is rescued by the Calvary during the Civil War. One woman. Once living among the white people, held captive by the Commanche. She assimilates into their culture. She becomes one of them. And she marries plus has a child as one of them. It’s all she remembers. It’s all she knows.

And then.

She is taken captive by the Calvary who come in to save the day during the Civil War. They kill her husband. They expect her to be grateful and want to return to their way of life. But it’s not what she’s known. And she has a child to think about. Plus there’s that small fact that they killed her husband hanging around too.

What if marrying the man who killed her husband will give her child a future? Can she do that?

This was such a great book to read. Lots of history. Lots of emotions. It read quickly. I loved the characters. They really seemed to reach out and grab me and make me feel their emotions. I’d gladly read this one again. Grab a copy today and let me know what you think of it.

Pre-Civil War to mid war
Fort Belknap, Texas

Well, this was a quite a story.

Eyes-like-Sky was taken captive by the Comanche when she was young, eventually not only adapting to her new life after a rocky start, but in her mind she became Comanche. So when her village was raided by American soldiers and her warrior husband was killed, she fought the capture and tried to escape at every opportunity. They recognized she was had been a captive, with her blue eyes, and kept her from running while at the fort as they tried to find her kin.

Meanwhile, Captain Garret Ramsey couldn’t get the haunting beauty and her sweet baby daughter out of his mind. But she hated him as he was the one whose bullet felled her Comanche husband.

Eyes-like-Sky (eventually shortened to Sky) had been raised with faith, and maintained that she accepted Christ as a child. Captain Ramsey was also a man of faith, so his greatest desire was to have God bless his decision to take care of her in whatever way God lead him.

I enjoyed this story. It kept my interest all the way through. I just wish it hadn’t ended so abruptly. Took me aback.

Still, it was a good book.

Texas Forsaken by author Sherry Shindelar is a Christian historical novel. This hefty book is 430 pages and the beginning of the author’s Lone Star Redemption Series. Since it is a poignant story of heartache, sadness, hope, and joy, readers may need tissues while reading it.

Set in 1860s Texas on the brink of the Civil War, this is the story of Eyes-Like-Sky. It is also the tale of Garrett, the Cavalry officer that assists her. Both are exceptional characters with a deepness to them. It was easy to engage with them.

The settlers and Indians are not at peace with each other. This was a violent time in history where attacks were made, people killed, and some abducted. The author mentions such without going into great detail.

The author has a nice writing style. The Christian element is present and illustrated by families praying and thanking God. A visiting preacher comes to spread the Word. Research has definitely been done and applied to make readers feel whisked back to this rough time and place. The language sounded authentic. A few times, however, I was uncertain if a character was taking the Lord’s name in vain. That really bothered me.

I recommend this historical fiction for lovers of that era and the conflict. Because of the time period and location, it was a bit violent and stressful for me to read. Others might like the danger and adventure. It gets a 4 star rating from me. A copy was provided by CelebrateLit, but these are my honest words.

This book is eye-opening and emotional. I was instantly wrapped up in the characters and what they endured and had in front of them. It starts in Texas during the Indian wars and then transports us East to begin the Civil War. Amid all the turmoil the country is facing we have Eyes Like Sky who was Maggie, a captive child that the Calvary has rescued and Garrett who wants to right a wrong he feels responsible for. We watch as "Sky" starts to remember her old life and faith in God and how that gets her through tragedy and the unknown. We watch Garrett finally get what he wants from life and even though it isn't easy he finds out what God's plan is for him.

My heart broke for Sky throughout as she was dealt a rough start to life and I was captured myself by Garrett's devotion and willingness to lose everything for her. It gave me another perspective on how the captives were treated and how difficult it must have been for them all. I appreciated the research that must have gone into writing this book. The characters are well-written, and the history is woven throughout but with an emphasis on the lives of our two main characters.

I received an early copy from Wild Heart Books to read and review if I choose. These are my own opinions. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I am eager to read the next one.

A novel that vividly portrays the realities of life for settlers, soldiers, Indians, and captives. As the country struggled to come to terms with the clashing of cultures, it is the innocent people caught between that faced the brunt of the divisions as they just sought a peaceful life for their families, whether Indian or settler. My heart ached to realize how preconceived ideas and prejudices hurt those returned captives more sometimes than the captivity did.

Eyes-Like-Sky, Little Star, and Garrett’s story is eye-opening and heart-wrenching. Because it is placed at the start of the Civil War and during the Indian Wars, it seems they leave one struggle for survival to enter another one. When Eyes-Like-Sky’s childhood lessons on faith and trusting God started coming back to her memories, I was reminded that He is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and He will never leave us or forsake us.

This is novel that I would revisit and I look forward to the continuation of the series. I do recommend this novel for a more mature reader due to the adult themes in places. There is no explicit language or graphic scenes/descriptions, just facts given that are more easily digested by the mature reader. I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

I loved this heartbreaking yet hopeful story. Right from the start I was pulled in and immediately invested in the characters. My heart broke for Eyes-Like-Sky (Maggie Logan) and all that she went through - taken captive in a Indian raid that killed her parents, rebuilding her life in the tribe only to have her husband killed in a battle with the army and herself recaptured. My heart felt for Garret as he struggled with his role in Eyes-Like-Sky’s current suffering and his growing care for her. Native American history/culture has always held a fascination for me. Especially in regard to settlers taken captive by Indians and integrated into the tribe. It always astounds me the ignorance or prejudices of that day towards Indians in general and captives who rebuilt their lives with their captors. And many times in this story I just wanted to shake a few people for their attitudes and actions. Texas Forsaken hit all the right notes for me and I look forward to more in this series. If you’re a fan of authors Lori Benton and Laura Frantz you will probably thoroughly enjoy this story as well.

This story had a profound effect on me. I will remember for a very long time. I felt like the characters were real people. It is a story about sacrifice, love, war, and forgiveness. It is also about guilt, beauty from ashes and resilience. Garret Ramsey could have a life of privilege but chooses to have a military one instead and is assigned to the Texas frontier fighting the Indian Wars. They are brutal and we learn much about them. Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) was young when she was taken captive by the Comanche but ended up falling in love with an Indian warrior and marrying him and having a baby. When her husband is killed by Garret in a battle, things are set in motion that will affect both Sky and Garret for the rest of their lives. I admired Garret for his sense of duty and his caring for Sky & her baby. He gives his word that he will always protect them. That "word" is tested many times. Sky will do anything for her baby and she is one stubborn woman! This story is very well researched and has so many emotions. The author doesn't shy away from conflict! You'll find yourself rooting for Garret, Sky and Little Star!

Texas Forsaken holds a tale mixed with heartache and hope.

Sherry brings the Texas landscape to life during a time that's less written about in fiction. I found it fascinating to read about the soldier posted in Texas on the brink of the Civil War and the issues involved with Comanche Indians. Sherry did an excellent job of portraying both sides of the conflict as having their own grievances and issues with the opposite side.

Garret made a relatable and likeable character, despite the complicated circumstances that begin his and Eyes-Like Sky's relationship. And Eyes-Like-Sky--well, her plight is heartbreaking. The spiritual growth they both experience comes through pain, but flows in a believable way.

There were a couple relationship scenes that pushed a bit too far for my comfort, which was my main issue with the book. Otherwise, Texas Forsaken was a story that held the perfect level of deep emotion, historical background, and relatable characters.

A really special story. Deeply encompassing story about a girl in Texas who had been a captive of the Comanche as a young girl, living with them for seven years before a conflict with soldiers killed her Indian husband and took her and her baby away to reunite her with her extended family. Her emotions are raw and she doesn't want to go back to living with white people. Garrett is the soldier who killed her husband. He tries to protect and provide for her and the baby, and becomes entranced with her. It's a very rough road and then to add to things Texas succeeded and forced the federalists to leave. Tense and a very tough struggle all the way through the story from more than one side. Strong love tale with good faith lessons.

I received this book free from the author, publisher and CelebrateLit book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Wow! Can I just say I loved this book. Ok, I have composed myself from this emotional read and hopefully can do it justice. This story has you on emotional roller coaster as you feel every nuance of pain, struggle, and resilience of Maggie aka Eyes Like Sky. Garrett is a man of faith, great character, and patience who in these difficult circumstances becomes a swoon worthy character. I was totally gobsmacked by this story as it was so much more than I expected. The author has totally captured the turmoil they experienced during this historical time and captivated us with her storytelling ability. I am definitely hooked and am anxiously awaiting book two in this Lone Star Redemption series as my heart didn’t want it to end. I was completely invested in this story of second chances and healing of hearts that learn to love with the strength of God in their lives. Loosely inspired by real characters made it even more interesting.
