Kayfabe: A Love Story

Rate this book
“Never in my wildest dreams, Mean Gene, would I think that I would get ripped off by a penny-pinching, two-timing referee! How much money on the plastic surgery!? How much money did he spend to pay the referee off!?” – Hulk Hogan (The Main Event).

-----

On February 5th, 1988, former World Wrestling Federation Champion, Hulk Hogan, made a damning allegation. He accused "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase of fronting the bill for a desperate man's risky and invasive facial plastic surgery to look like referee Dave Hebner.

And I believed him.

Paying homage to 1987's WrestleMania III, A Love Story is a collection of 87 essays written in an alternate universe where professional wrestling isn't scripted, and the match results aren't predetermined. So step around the shards of glass from the broken barbershop window and cozy up next to your favorite top turnbuckle, because A Love Story is indeed a happening.

It was an interesting book, but the order of the essays or articles threw me off.

This book is for the fans of the golden era of the WWF. If you grew up with Hulk, Savage, Piper, Andre, Gorilla, Bobby, and Mean Gene as the background of your 80s childhood, you were better for it, and this book celebrates those times. Taking the events of 80s/early 90s WWF and looking back at them as if they were really happening was a fun way to look back at being a fan. Even though I was a kid, I knew it wasn't on the level, but it felt on the level, and this book tapped into that hilariously. I would highly recommend this book for the lapsed fan in all of us. Now, I would love a follow up using Monday Night Wars era.

I really enjoyed this book. A very funny & nostalgic trip back to the 80's and 90's, reliving the classic larger than life characters and stories that made wrestling so much fun growing up.
