Sleeping Foxes #2

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie

Rate this book
Max has settled nicely into life in Welling. He’s got the best boyfriend ever born and a life he never imagined he could have. He’s also written his new screenplay, and the hottest director in Hollywood has snapped it up enthusiastically.

So what’s the problem? She’s asked for a two-week long retreat, hosted by him, in his home, with the actors who’ve been cast in the movie. Between the personal disagreements, the weird flirtations, the easily bruised egos, and the fact that one of them invited his family along, the first week has already been hellish.

All he wanted to do was find the right time to propose to his boyfriend. Things take a turn for the worse when one of the actors is murdered, and the best suspects are Max, his family, and his houseguests. The sheriff is no help at all, so Max needs to discover who the killer is before someone ends up behind bars.

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie is a slightly paranormal cozy mystery about Max and Gentry's happily ever after, put on hold by an excessively flirty actor, a baby surprise, and the worst sheriff ever to grace the town of Welling. It follows Where Foxes Say Goodnight but largely stands alone, and closes the series.

I keep reading this author because it's low effort, and because there are often interesting concepts and I keep hoping the execution will not suck. Alas, this was so sloppy and poorly edited, it was a shame. Statements would be made on one page and contradicted the next, the case was absolutely ridiculously unbelievable, and the whole thing was a bit exhausting.

This is set before the epilogue of Where Foxes Say Goodnight . Max is working on the new movie of the script he wrote based on Gentry's family history, and somehow the director and some members of the cast are all staying in his big house to get into the feel of the movie when a sudden murder happens.

This felt a bit like an Agatha Christie-esque mystery, with some "unexpected" plot twists and the eventual discovery of the culprit.

Gentry was still swoony, Max ridiculous and fun, and John surprisingly became more interesting. I wouldn't mind reading a bit more about him.

This was fun but it definitely read more like an extended epilogue than the next book of a series.

I had a good time.

I liked this one, but I do have some niggles that kept me from rating it higher.

First, the good:
.) Gentry and Max were just too damn sweet. I find them to be, I dunno...relaxing, maybe is the right word. Soothing.
.) Jon and Hunter - if they get their own book, I'll be all over it.
.) Nadia - can I get my own ghost that is awsome, a little nosey, but not too much...and isn't scary AF?
.) Several of the supporting characters were a joy (Joe, Alicia, Amelia, to name a few)

And now the niggles:
.) The murder plot was kinda ridiculous.
.) I would have tossed Milo, Gwen, and Kayden out soon after they showed up since 2 of the 3 were not even invited and they all acted like entitled dicks. Yeah, I am not so nice that I would put up with that crap in my own home, not to mention make the rest of the guests put up with it, too. Talk about Drama Llama.
.) The complete and sudden personality transplants that Gwen and Kayden had. It was commented on by Max, repeatedly, but it did not ring true. And I get that they'd been through a lot, but Gwen needed to take responsibility for the shitty way she treated absolutely everyone and how she expected everyone to deal with a 7 year old who is given zero boundaries as if it was normal and acceptable. ALL THE NOPE on that. I felt she was just given a free pass. Yes, show some compassion, but that doesn't mean just brushing aside the horrible behavior as if it never happened.
.) The resolution to the murder.
.) This one is minor, but some of the names were too similar. I kept getting Alicia and Amelia mixed up, as well as Joe and Jon. Joe & Jon were a problem for me in the first book, too.

And the undecided:
.) I probalby would have sued the sheriff for defamation, but maybe their way was a better cumupance. I'll have to think on that.

I needed the cheesy, OTT, fanciful story this book gave me. The duology was absolutely incredible for a light, fluffy little break from the heavier shit I’ve been reading. I don’t care what anyone says, cosy mysteries are great, and they’re even better when they’re interesting.

As simple as it was to follow and sleuth along, the plot of this one was a good one and carried a twist that added to the warm fuzzies. I’m easy to please, contrary to popular belief.

4.25/5. Still sick to death of obnoxious fucking exes, but I’m never escaping them as long as I’m reading books. I’ve accepted that, but it doesn’t mean I have to love it.

In the epilogue chapter of Where Foxes Say Goodnight ... we found out that Max won his second Oscar out of a screenplay that he made about Nadia's family (Nadia is the ghost as well as Gentry's grandmother)... and that he and Gentry got married.

This book's timeline is DURING the making of the movie of that screenplay. Max hosted a bunch of Hollywood stars and director in his house and well, a murder happened. So I couldn't really see this being a stand-alone. Better read book #1 first.

Truthfully, I liked the mystery here better. It didn't feel like it came out of nowhere (the first book had mystery of someone threating Max's life and there was a dead body, but it didn't directly related to Max anyway) ... the victim was someone disgusting, and of course the Hollywood people became suspects. It was more seamless, the mystery, though the solution was a bit "out there" (*lol* you just had to read it by yourself).

As for the romance, since Max and Gentry is pretty much a couple, it was only to established more of that. Having said that, there were other couples introduced here and they were also another case of instant-love (or quick love, whatever).

With this sequel, the Sleeping Foxes series shifts more towards the cozy mystery genre rather than pure romance, but I didn't mind it. I actually ended up liking this book more than the first one.
The mystery was better developed, and the ending made me literally gasp. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that this book takes place between the ending of the first book and its epilogue. For this reason, you know certain characters can't be guilty since we already saw them after the event of this book. However, the ending was so surprising that I didn't mind it in the end.
The romance was so sweet, but it definitely took a step back from what else was going on in the plot. Still, I love Max and Gentry together so much!
I really hope we're going to get other sequels in the future.

P.S. I listened to this book on Audible, and I have to praise Greg Boudreaux's work. He wasn't just narrating or acting; he gave us an entire one man show! Loved it. I've never listened to a bad narrator, but I've only had this reaction where I couldn't stop thinking about how good the narrator was once (listening to Richard Armitage's audiobooks).

Excellent conclusion to the duology, but I saw the solution to the mystery early on -- not the why of it, but the how and who, definitely. Not a bad thing, but pretty obvious. However, the etiology was wonderful and well worth the reading time spent! If you're looking for a much ghost interaction as the first book -- yes, there's a resident ghost, but this really isn't a ghost story. She's just someone else who inhabits the house.

I came here to read a sequel to a romance book, to see the progress the characters made in their relationship. Sadly, it is not a book about them. It's a murder mystery (a genre I am usualy bored by). I knew that from the synopsis, so I shouldn't be suprised, but I still hoped it would lean more into romace.

Not too sure why I bothered as book one didn't exactly light a fire for me. This one had truly goofy plot lines and even Greg's always-wonderful narration couldn't keep my head in the game.

Another great and entertaining mystery from Sam Burns.

I am never disappointed in the story or the outcome when I read a new Burns’ book!

3.5 but rounded down because of editing errors.

So, I enjoyed the mystery of this book. I always enjoy a good mystery, especially when there's humor thrown into the mix. I guessed part of this very early on--kind of had it even before the murder took place, actually--but I didn't quite get the end sorted. I was close, kind of sort of had it (trying so hard not to give anything away!) but, I missed part so I don't give myself credit on the whodunit aspect.

This was sweet, it was funny, but there were some things I wasn't a fan of. The romance parts seemed barely there or, in the end, rushed. I imagine the author didn't want to go for another book with this series (at least, I thought I read something about this book ending this series, but maybe I'm wrong), but I think the overall story could've benefitted from either one more book or make this one a bit longer. Either way, I think the romantic storyline would've benefitted from either of those options.

Also, I was getting a little frustrated with all the reasons for how wonderful everyone was and how there's no chance this person or that person or then even the person no one even liked in the beginning could've been killers. It just felt like I was being forced down a path to make sure I understood just how good these people were. Or, at least they were good enough to never ever kill anyone. Believe it or not, good people snap. Nice people have a breaking point. It was just....yeah, frustrating.

Still, if you're looking for an easy read (though, please read the first one before this! I read it already and I still struggled at the beginning remembering some details!) that's got some sweetness, snark and a mystery to solve, I do recommend it. While I may not have loved everything about it, I still enjoyed it a good deal.

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie by Sam Burns Sam Burns

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie was a nice follow up to Where Foxes Say Goodnight by Sam Burns Where Foxes Say Goodnight. I went into the book with a guess as to who the murderer was (and I mean don't we all? We all like to make a guess asap and see if we're right, or change our guesses as we get more info), and let me tell you my guess was incorrect (and I'm glad!) and I never saw the actual murderer coming and the reveal was as much a surprise to me as the characters in the book!

Between dealing with a couple of unexpected additions during all this, an actor who doesn't know boundaries, the start of young love, a surprising revelation that the Fox brothers and Max aren't the only ones who can see ghosts, and Max trying really hard to convince Gentry that Gentry's Hard Wood is the perfect name for his construction company (I laughed out loud at that!), this book has a little bit of everything.

I definitely enjoyed this book! I received an advanced readers copy of this book, and all opinions are my own.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie is the follow up to Sam Burns’ excellent Where Foxes Say Goodnight and completes the two-book Sleeping Foxes series. This features a new mystery connected to a new group of characters who come to visit Max’s home, but I do think it is best enjoyed after reading the first book for the larger context. It helps to know the various key characters, like Max, Gentry, Gentry’s brother Jon, and their ghostly grandmother, Nadia. Plus, the various folks in the small town of Welling. And the first book is sooo good, so do yourself a favor and start there.

Sam Burns really does so well with this style story and I think this series is something special. Despite my nitpicks on elements of the mystery, I found myself unable to put this one down and really enjoying my time with Max, Gentry, and the rest of the group. This is an excellent set of stories and definitely worth reading.

Did I remember the first book? Absolutely not. Did this one give you a little recap? No :) Every time they referenced the people involved in the mystery of the first book I was like who dat? No clue.
Anyways, this second book focused more on the mystery than the romance. We had Max and Gentry being cute, and Jon flirting but it was more about Max trying to figure out who dun killed the one who died and the side character's relationships. Also, the tone shifts were so abrupt sometimes, they would be talking about the murder and in the same conversation they would shift to talking about proposals. That happened twice
Sidenote, I do need to ask if anyone else thinks it's really weird to be like brb Imma go bang my boyfriend real quick to your employees in the middle of the work day?? I know they wanted to slip in a sex scene real quick before the murder but there was no other way to set it up?? Also, they we're expecting their guests to come back any minute now?? Hello??
Anyways, it was a fun little time, and are we getting Jon's romance?

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie, a slightly paranormal cozy mystery, is the second book in the fox mystery series by Sam Burns. The book features Max, who has settled into a comfortable life in Welling with his boyfriend and is now dealing with the chaos of hosting a two-week-long retreat for the actors of his newly written screenplay. To make matters worse, one of the actors is found murdered, and Max, along with his family and houseguests, become the prime suspects.

The author’s writing style is engaging and witty, making it easy to get lost in the story. Gentry continues to be as charming as ever and the moments of him and Max simply enjoying their life together were some of my favorites. The cozy setting of Welling adds to the charm of the story, making it a perfect choice for a cozy mystery lover.

Overall, Let Sleeping Foxes Lie is a fantastic addition to the series. I really hope the author decides to write more for this small town (Jon’s story, perhaps?). I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining read.

Watch for Startling Incidents and Incredible Twists!
What a fun rollercoaster ride of a story! Max is a screenwriter who won an Oscar for the film about his granny, moved across country from SoCal to coastal Carolina, and bought what turned out to be a mansion complete with the ghost of Gentry (his beloved HEA)'s granny. Now he's written the family drama of the people who once lived in a house on his property and the cast is staying with them to "absorb the atmosphere of the place". Lots of craziness and more dramas make this another excellent tale. Loved it!
Greg Boudreaux continues to be a very deft narrator capable of keeping the story flowing while totally differentiating each of the characters.

I really like this series. I'm enamoured of the idea of this place and these characters. I love the relationship for Max and Gentry and look forward to more in the series. I was actually counting down the days from when I finished book 1 and could get to book 2. Then I held off on reading book 2 for 2 whole days just so I'd still have it to look forward to.

I don't feel that it disappointed at all. I think the mystery was really fun, and I think I caught several of the clues as they came up and I was able to discern the answer - which is always a super fun element to reading a mystery.

The end of the book promises more adventures and happiness and I am just thrilled to be able to look forward to reading more in this world that Sam Burns has created.

Loved! This book is just as good (or better) than book one! Max and Gentry are hosting the cast of Max's upcoming movie - and it's been a bit rough. Then someone dies and...surprisingly, things get better. After all, the dead man was a real jerk and he is no big loss. Except for the tiny little problem of too many suspects, not enough clues. The ending to this mystery is very satisfying. I didn't guess who did it correctly, but I did get another important piece correct which made me happy. While Max and Gentry's relationship is not at the forefront as it was in book 1, there are important steps forward made and Jon (Gentry's brother) gets a nice little romance of his own. I really hope this series continues!!

I'm all for representation but OMG this was preaching disguised as a cozy mystery.

I think the author just expressed every single frustration they had when it comes to homophobia, misogyny, police tactics of targeting the "other" in a crime and much more here and although I agree with each and everyone of them, the way they dominated the story it was off putting and EXHAUSTING!! In your face and preachy is how I'd describe them.

And with the story having 2 caricature villains of which one was unalived, the other was the bigoted sheriff and everyone else were good people with open minds and hearts, it was just not a mix for a good book.

Only because of Greg Boudreaux's narration I'm going with 2 stars.

I had similar problems with this as with the first one, where in a lot of areas it stayed a bit too surface level for me and did not really explore its own plot and premises, which ciuld have been really fun and interesting. Most notably, somewhere in the middle of the book, Hunter reveals that he can see not only Nadia but ghosts in general. This is then never mentioned again in the whole book, not to mention explained, which to me is a glaring hole in the world building.

Also, the writing style became somewhat more over the top sassy/ fan fiction-y, e.g. when Max tells Alicia that her co-worker is into her in front of quite a big audience. To me this seemed like it should be an uncomfortable and inapprobriate situation, but it went unnaturally well im the book.

The first one was definitely better but this was still good. Audiobook narrator was excellent, and I was happy with how the mystery was resolved, but it was a little weird to me how all the supernatural stuff that seemed to be ramping up at the end of the first book was either completely disregarded (Gentry's power) or shoved very much to the side (the ghost literally living with them). This was very much a cozy mystery book whereas the first book was a modern fantasy book. Those are my two fav genres, so I was happy either way, just a little surprised since that wasn't where I thought the series was going.

Overall, it was a solid read and I enjoyed myself. I know the intent is that there will only be these two books, but I would read more in this series given the chance.

Let Sleeping Foxes Lie continues the story of Max and Gentry. Max is living with his boyfriend and have a beautiful house, He also have the cast and the director of his new screenplay, Staying in his house for a two weeks, meaning is utter caos, a few disagreements, an actor that won’t stop flirting with him and also he invited his family along. Max just want them gone so he can find the right time to propose to his boyfriend.
But every when to bad to worse when one of the actors end up kill, is the killer one of his guest? I like this new story Max and Gentry are so adorable!! The mystery of the murder and finding how did it was interesting, because I was invested along with Max to find out who did it! We get a few surprises along the way. Finally Max and Gentey get to propose with a little fun surprise! I love these two! This is definitely a great serie!

Okay, this one was also a very easy read that was generally enjoyable, definitely nothing groundbreaking or too deep, but a perfectly comfy little mystery in a classic setting of many people in a big house in the middle of nowhere, and one of them is the murderer, you know the one. The thing that makes this book stand out among all the typical novels in this genre is that everybody is super gay. A bit annoyed that the paranormal aspect of this setting (hello, you literally have a ghost in the house!) is all but completely discarded, which is a pity. But I'll 100% read another book in this series, if it is planned of course.

I'd give this 4.5 stars rounded up. It was a fun book with an interesting mystery. The characters were something else, and although I felt like a couple of them started off too obnoxious to like, I was wrong, haha. I ended up finding all of them sympathetic in some way (well, except for the dead one).

It was especially fun to see Max and Gentry again, and if there's a third, I will 100% pick it up!

(Minor nitpick:

Max and Gentry’s second mystery.

Max’s screenplay is being turned into a movie, and now he has to host the actors that are going to star in it, Max’s patience is pushed to the limit when one star invites his sister and her son along, all three are not nice people. One of the actors dies and everyone is a suspect.
Max and Gentry’s relationship is stronger than ever and are more in love than ever.

I wish there were more books to come for these two but sadly the author has said 2 books only.
