Skade follows the path of a winter storm to wreak her vengeance on Durin Blood-axe, a fierce veteran of the border wars between Jötunnheim and Midgard. Before she can pit her sword against Durin's axe in a duel to the death, Skade must first breach the ramparts of his fortress, then face the hundred warriors in his garrison. Luckily, Skade is not alone.Set against the Sagas and myths of Scandinavia, SKADE is a historical fantasy of love and loss, of family blood-feuds and scores settled. But death does not always settle matters of evil and Skade must chance the consequences of her actions and do as destiny decides.Skade is a Chapter Book. It is a novel told in five stand alone 'books' of which, this is the first.
I bought this book on a whim. I’m a big fan of Charles Vess and liked the cover and the blurb sounded intriguing. And this was great!
It’s the first of 4 Skade books and I will be picking them all up. This first novella works as an introduction to the young woman, Skade, who is a kick butt warrior. She’s on a mission of revenge and will stop at nothing to kill her father’s betrayer, Durin.
This follows Nordic myths and legends. My only reference of that culture is from the book Beowulf which was harder to understand and comprehend because of the old English the edition I read was written in. Skade does a good job capturing that feel but modernizing the language enough to not bog down the reader.
Surely such a thin book can't hold much magic. It's not thick enough to hide any coiled twists. This slip of a volume can't make me reconnect with any sort of mythology.
Those are all things you might say before you read Skade. But you can't say them after.
A lyrical tale of revenge, redemption, and rebirth.
