Jacqueline Wilson was born in Bath in 1945, but spent most of her childhood in Kingston-on-Thames. She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first ‘novel’ when she was nine, filling in countless Woolworths’ exercise books as she grew up. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!) before turning to writing novels full-time.

One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This was also the first of her books to be illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Since then Jacqueline has been on countless awards shortlists and has gone on to win many awards. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.

Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. In 2008 she became Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

This is the first novel I have ever read. Now this book is all torn out and held together by cellophane tape but it's still lives as a sentimental memory for me. This is how I got to be a big Jacqueline Wilson fan!

After Mickey watches a Werewolf film with his sisters he becomes terrified of dogs. This doesn't help his relationship with his father who already thinks he is a wimp and gives he siblings even more reason to make fun of him. His mother decides he should get a puppy of his own to help him get over his fear. Much to everyone's surprise Mickey chooses the biggest and fiercest puppy at the kennel, a werepuppy.

This is the first book I have read by Jacqueline Wilson and I can see why she is so highly regarded. Her writing is quick and fluid and her understanding of the family dynamic is impressive. She writes about fairly complicated relationships and feelings with a deftness and simplicity that the reader can relate to.

A great story that champions the underdog and shows that a little self confidence can go a long way.

Another really short review because this book is less than 100 pages, probably not worth a review at all but every book deserves a review right!

In this book we follow Micky who after watching a horror movie involving a werewolf suddenly has a fear of all dogs! In an attempt to help him overcome this fear his mum decides that he can get his own dog, in a shocking turn of events Micky chooses his own werepuppy!

Well this was a cute short story. I'll be honest and say I think there are better ways than to get over a phobia of dogs than buying a dog but hey it worked for the story. I liked how Micky and Wolfie had a cute bond and he did care for him. I just think it wasn't the ideal time for a dog. But hey cute story!

That's pretty much it for this, not a lot I can really say without describing the entire book. It is an incredibly short read (perfect for finishing off any reading goals), and it is fun for children (maybe not so much for adults). I would recommend it if you're after a short, fun read but maybe don't go out of your way to pick this up. Nothing overly special or different.

This is one of the few Jacqueline Wilson books that I never read as a child, so when I saw it in a charity shop I picked it up right away.
This is one of her older books, and also shorter ones. Overall it was a fun story and Jacqueline’s gift for writing children’s books shone through. Only a few things I would mention: 1. The dad sucked in this, I was hoping for some sort of redemption arc but no he did not apologise or realise the wrong in his actions (casual sexism, reinforcing gender stereotypes on his children, calling mickey a bigger wimp than his sisters etc- was all very unnecessary and annoying as hell) 2. Dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate and this was known in the 90s so I found it weird that it was included, especially as children are highly impressionable and could take this as an A okay to feed their dogs chocolate. And 3, as a cat person if I was the mum in this book that dog would have been straight back to the centre- but of course thats not a fault of the book that’s just from the perspective of a 20yo reading who is not a massive dog person to begin with🫣

Another short story from the back catalogue of Jacqueline Wilson, this time about a young boy who becomes so scared of dogs after watching a film about werewolves, his mum decides to take matters into her own hands and buy him……a puppy.

But this is no ordinary puppy. This is a Werepuppy.

This was actually really cute, and a good way of looking at how to help children get over some of their fears as well being quite a cute story about an unruly puppy and how this affects the family that has adopted him.

Very cute.

I found this book quite tricky to get started but after a chapter or two I thought it was great. Micky got a puppy called Wolfy because his mum thought that it would help him to get over his fear of werewolves after his sisters made him watch a very scary movie. There were some lovely characters in the story like Micky's teacher but there were also some horrible characters like the school bully and Micky's sister.

Thankfully the book ended well.

A quick read for younger children (KS1), and preferable to my previous experience of Jacqueline Wilson.

Anyone who has adopted a dog will see the funny side of the mayhem, loyalty and affection that ‘Wolfie’ brings to his new family.

Remember: A dog is for life, not just for Christmas!

An easy to read novel for children. I like the fact Wilson focuses on real life issues that may be affecting her audience.
