A slice of life graphic novel set in Hong Kong, Eric’s Sister explores creative doubt, the uneasy love between family members, and friendship as a salve in the aftermath of tragedy.
After years of following Kaitlin’s work, I had the amazing opportunity to meet her at Yu & Me Books for her NY debut of Eric’s Sister! The book features Kaitlin’s signature comic style and wastes no extra detail. Even though Kaitlin kind of spoiled the book (she made a comment about her own sibling that revealed a major plot point in the book, lol), the story was lovely and touching all the same. I loved hearing about her creative process, her artistic inspirations, and the central takeaways of the book — she is absolutely an artist and graphic novelist to follow. I so look forward to continuing to follow her career and her next book (which she’s hinted at involving horny girls lol).
A beautiful book about grief and how to pursue an artistic life. I was particularly drawn to the protagonist, Lisa—how she oscillates between her role as Eric’s sister, and her understanding of self. I loved the spare and quiet narration, told through visuals that emphasised the sometimes fraught relationship between the interior and exterior world. There are all these tiny details that make the characters and scenes really come alive.
My first ever graphic novel and it made me want to read more. The story itself is so touching and the format and art added so much more to it. It was amazing to see the author speak about her process and how she explored her ideas of what it means to be an artist, "success", family strife, friendships and figuring your way around without having an end goal through this graphic novel. I know I'll be re-reading it over and over again.
Not me crying in the laundrette 🥲 Kaitlin is an amazing illustrator and storyteller, an absolute page turner that I’m glad I could enjoy in one sitting. More please!
