Quirky! Fun!

Faith Gardner wanted to surprise her readers with something different. Which meant stepping outside the Jolvix series. We all gave a collective gasp! An author trying something different? Rarely, if ever does that work.

But she generously and cleverly gave us a choice of genre, and the majority responded loud and clear, requesting a straight up thriller (including me).

So you’re asking….did it work? Absolutely!💃

The Hunters are the typical American family. I say this with a note of sarcasm as you quickly realize there’s no such thing as a normal family.
All families have a unique quality that makes them different. Whether that’s good or bad is up to you to decide.

Now back to The Hunters. Angela and Carson are married with two teenagers, Eliza and Ezra. Eliza’s best friend is Olivia, she spends more time with the Hunters than she does in her own home. Kind-hearted, the Hunters think she’s a sweet girl who just needs their help.

Boy, were they wrong! And they’re about to find out the hard way! (That’s all you’re getting from me on the premise).

My favorite character was Angela! She stole the show for me. She was hilarious trying to deal with her house, career and family (including Olivia). Oh, and her valium!🤣 I’m curious who your favorite character will be (or was)!

Such a fun, witty read. It has everything you’d expect from this author. Her style and keen sense of humor truly stands out.

Personally, I believe her talent would shine no matter what genre she tried. This book had the thriller aspect along with a bit of YA, (not a fav of mine but I was ok with it), family drama and a boat load of offbeat humor!

Can’t wait for more from this amazing author! Thrillers, dystopian, whatever it is I’ll be first in line!

When newcomer Olivia West befriends her classmate, sixteen-year-old Eliza Hunter, they quickly become inseparable, and Olivia becomes a frequent guest in Eliza’s home. Olivia’s family situation is in stark contrast to the close-knit, well-to-do Hunters – Eliza’s parents Angela, a psychiatrist, and Carson a true crime writer, and her older brother seventeen-year-old Ezra – and enjoys spending time in their home. However, Eliza begins to distance herself after Olivia reveals her darker side, leaving Eliza feeling unsettled and suspicious of her intentions. But Olivia is quick to become romantically involved with Ezra, with whom she is pleasantly surprised to find she has much in common and is easy to manipulate. After a shocking series of events, Olivia finds herself living in Eliza’s home, but there is much more to this seemingly perfect family than meets the eye – secrets they would do anything to protect. Similarly, the Hunters have no idea of how far Olivia could go to get her own way and they are about to find out!

They are the Hunters by Faith Gardner is a riveting read! Well-paced, twisty and entertaining, with a cast of interesting ( that’s putting it mildly!) characters, this is the kind of story you would want to finish in one sitting!! The narrative is shared from the perspectives of Olivia and the members of the Hunter family. As we get to know more about their deepest and darkest secrets, it becomes increasingly difficult to like these characters or sympathize with them for their predicament, but you won’t be able to look away. I’m a fan of the author’s Jolvix series and this is my first time reading one of her standalone novels and it surely won’t be my last. Sharply written and smartly plotted, what a wild ride! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the bonus chapter (available once you sign up for the author’s newsletter).

Wow wow wow! Talk about one crazy story with a deranged family! My kind of book! Hell yeah! This was a nice break from a few lousy reads I’ve had recently. That’s just what I needed.

Olivia has a new friend, Eliza Hunter. Olivia is mesmerized by Eliza, as she comes from a glamorous family, in her mind. As they begin to spend more time together, she also starts to fall for Eliza’s brother, Ezra.

Carson and Angela Hunter are Eliza and Ezra’s parents. Olivia is captivated by them as well. Carson, the cool dad who’s a journalist, specializing in true crime stories. Angela, a youth psychiatrist. However, there are some dark secrets that lie within this wicked family.

When Ezra and Olivia start dating, Olivia talks of murdering her abusive father. From there this story just goes balls to the wall! Get ready for a wild ass ride! And that ending
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This was my first Faith Gardner book and definitely won’t be my last! Glad I saw some other reviews from her other works that piqued my interest. Thank you to those who mentioned her.

Carson, Angela, Ezra, and Eliza are The Hunter's. A happy family with a nice home. A family any one would be envious of. That includes Eliza's new best friend, Olivia.

Olivia just moved here and her and Eliza hit it off instantly. Eliza is completely smitten with her new friend until Olivia starts saying things and doing things which have Eliza questioning her sanity. Eliza thinks it may be better to let this friendship cool off but that doesn't make Olivia happy at all. If she can't have Eliza then she'll have the next best thing, her brother, Ezra.

When Olivia's father goes missing the Hunter's agree to take her in temporarily so she isn't forced into foster care. This is Eliza's nightmare and Ezra's dream come true. The parents are clueless about the dynamics at play but Olivia knows exactly what she's doing and before too long the Hunter's may be the hunted. Or are they?

I assure you nothing is what it seems but to say more would be bad reviewing etiquette. *zips lips*

As you all know I am a huge fan of Faith Gardner and her Jolvix series so when I received the opportunity to download her latest stand-alone thriller I was stoked. Having just finished this I can tell you all right now - DO NOT READ the synopsis on Goodreads. I'm glad I didn't before I started or I would have been pretty disappointed in how much the synopsis reveals.

I assumed this was an adult thriller but, for me, this read very much like a YA thriller. I think a younger me would have LOVED this one but older me just *liked* it. It was okay, totally readable, but I was never wowed by anything that happened. I did not care for the parents at all. Angela made absolutely no impression on me. She was so aloof that I just couldn't get any kind of vibe from her other than boring. Carson gave me so many cringe moments. With all his rapping and rap music references. I know he was being written like a *cool* dad but it failed in my opinion. He was like a caricature. I also didn't care for the way he talked about and ogled Olivia. Super cringe.

I will say that the ending was done well and I was satisfied in this books conclusion. If you sign up for her newsletter you can read a bonus epilogue to this story.

I love Gardner, I will read all of her books, but this one wasn't a perfect fit for me, unfortunately. 3 stars!

Yes! This thriller is everything! I couldn’t put it down. Entertaining, addictive, and consuming! Faith Gardener is the queen of the unexpected. “Passion is a flame that inevitably dies. But loyalty burns forever. And secrets can sew two hearts together.” Believe me, there are plenty of secrets to share among this intriguing and at at times, unsettling group. The Hunters are truly original and bonded in ways unimaginable. They appear to be the quintessential nuclear family. In reality, they are anything but. “Guess my family’s not as normal as we seem.” That is a definite understatement. Thank you BookSirens for my copy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As a fan of the Jolvix series , I couldn’t pass up another book by Faith Gardner.

This one was different; I would describe it more as a YA thriller, but it was nonetheless quite interesting.

The book would have been a 5 for me, except for the ending, which I found disappointing—but that’s just my opinion.

The premise revolves around the Hunter family: Angela and Carson are the parents, and Eliza and Ezra are their teenage children. On the surface, they seem perfect, but once you take a closer look, you begin to notice the cracks in their facade. They harbor secrets no one should discover. Unfortunately, Olivia, a sixteen-year-old girl who befriends Eliza and comes from a difficult home life, infiltrates their world, triggering a downward spiral for all of them.

Cliffhanger: No

Many thanks to both Mirror House Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of They Are the Hunters. It has an expected publication date of January 11, 2024.

Well, THIS was different! I love the Jolvix books Ms. Gardner writes but I don't feel I was the right target audience for this book. They Are the Hunters has an intriguing premise; are these characters the hunters or the hunted? It's totally unlike anything I've ever read. I've often felt that there is no such thing as a perfect person - one who isn't even a wee bit dysfunctional. However, the characters in this book go so, so far beyond dysfunctional!

I was unprepared for how gruesome and dark They Are the Hunters would be. There are so many glowing reviews and I wish I could add one more to that list! My apologies to the author. This just wasn't a good fit for me.

Such a fun quirky read about a very deranged family! From the outside the Hunters are your typical family of four but they have a new secret at every corner and aren’t what they seem! Olivia befriends Eliza Hunter and desperately wants to be included in all the family doings until Olivia reveals a little of her darker side and Eliza ends the friendship. That doesn’t stop Olivia from dating Ezra the brother and they fall hard for each other, how far will Ezra go for Olivia? Plus the parents have just as many secrets!! Wild ride!!

Excellent character development and each have likeable and unlikeable traits, kept me wanting to read for sure!! My first by the author and definitely won’t be my last!!

I.am.Evil..

Oh, what a twisted, evil book this one is! I love Faith Gardner and the Jolvix series has to have the most five star reviews in any series by me. This is the first one not set in the Jolvis universe and it may be even more crazy then those books.

This one stars Olivia West who quickly becomes friends with Eliza Hunter and gets accepted into the Hunter household as a honorary daughter. Things are all fun and loving until Olivia mentiones to Eliza that she plans to murder someone. Things quickly esclate as The Hunter family is no stranger to murder. Talk about bad decisions.....

This book is fast and well paced. It's told from the POV of all the Hunter family members as well as Olivia as things quickly intertwine. Every character is perfect and interesting. And the ending! This book totally sticks the landing and we should always remember, "Practice makes Perfect"

Another quality thriller from Faith Gardner and higly recommended.

I really appreciate Mirror House Press for giving me a free copy of this book to read for a honest review and it has a publication date of January 11, 2024.

I'll just preface my review by saying I have loved everything that Faith Gardner has written, so when this one seemingly strayed into YA territory I said "uh oh!". But no worries - of course she came through!

Almost everyone in this book is a psychopath or psychopath adjacent. But the characters are also so normal, they could be your neighbors. There's a little bit of an origin story for the parents, Angela and Carson, and the secret that binds them. There's nerdy Ezra, perfect daughter Eliza (okay, maybe not in her black hair/clothing phase), and new-in-town girl Olivia, who is just looking for a friend. And a collision course that brings them all together.

The writing is tight, with bits of humor that break up what would otherwise be a very macabre story of a hereditary inclination toward unaliving humans. But with the greatest of intentions.

I absolutely loved this one. It has an easy to read writing style but was dark and twisted, funny yet brutal, and just overall amazing. This author dared to take this to places others won't and also doesn't try to spell everything out for the reader without leaving unanswered questions. Each character has strong, unique traits, making them stand out in their own way and having more depth to them than the usual fast-paced book. The reader will either love or hate each and every one of them. How I have not heard of this author until now blows my mind because if this book is any indication of her past reads, she might just be a new favorite of mine. Four and a half stars.

This was reviewed by one of my Goodreads friends and I trust her so I started reading immediately. I love a good compelling thriller and this was that. I had a hard time putting it down mostly because it was so disturbing. It’s well written and drew me in because of the teenagers. Especially Ezra, I couldn’t believe his thoughts and then the book was next level crazy! I was shocked and found it put together rather convincingly. I recommend it. 4.5⭐️

Oh! What a ride! (could be taken both ways)

Synopsis
Eliza and Olivia are fast friends with two different worlds: Eliza has a happy family while Olivia is abused constantly. Until one night, Eliza isn't sure if befriending Olivia is worth all the hassle or not.

What I like
The pace was fast, the story and writing were super engaging! There was no dull part in the story and it didn't matter that it has like 5 different povs lol
Yesterday I regreted leaving my kindle at work because I NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT. And boy, it didn't disappoint!
You wanna talk about morally grey characters? Look no further! They are all here! Talk about the positive and negative traits of all the Hunters plus Olivia, I could stay up all night tbh.
And I wanna yell when
And oh the ending!! I really am gonna look for author's other books because this one's such a chef's kiss!

What I don't like
The summary is a bit misleading, I was hoping something similar to the movie Ready or Not, but despite that, the book was great.

Final thought
This one's a fun read, go get the book now!

They Are The Hunters was such an addictive, gripping, suspenseful thriller. My eyes were glued to the pages and I couldn't read fast enough. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did, but let me tell you it killed my expectations.

This family is so damn dysfunctional, messed up, creepy at times and utterly deranged, you know what I loved every single second. I liked how we got everyone's POV it made me get to know each and everyone one of them and see inside their minds. Every character added to the craziness, it was chef's kiss.

It was perfectly paced through it all, there was never a moment where you didn't feel the suspense. It was an easy, fast read even though it was dark. The originality of this book was so refreshing, I didn't expect the final outcome, it definitely took me by surprise.

Faith is truly an author to watch, this thriler was truly outstanding. I loved it so much! And have you seen that cover 😍

This was such a dark and quirky story! I'm not sure if it's being marketed as YA but it qualifies in my opinion. It covers the horror and thriller genres as an EXTREMELY dysfunctional family makes one bad decision after another.

"...secrets can sew two hearts together" really sums up the book!

I’ve read 4 @faith.gardner books in the past few months and I’ve come to the conclusion that

1.) Faith NEVER MISSES (aka all her thrillers are entertaining, fast-paced and truly one of a kind)
2.) This is by far my favorite book of hers (even though they’ve all been 5⭐️s)

This book is delightfully full of an imperfectly dysfunctional wealthy family that loves to put on a perfect facade, a pseudo single white female vibe, and some questionable parenting!!!

5⭐️

This book did not live up to my expectations based on the blurb, and I really had high hopes that were unfortunately dashed on the rocks of drama, angst and length.

That doesn't mean it was a bad book, but it was not what I expected, and therefore was disappointing.

I did not enjoy all the drama and angst that this book had to offer, and even though the ending was unexpected, it was somehow, unfair, for lack of a better word.

I also found this book to be unnecessarily long, due to the drama and angst, perhaps more needs to be included in the blurb to make it more drama and less thriller, which seems to be what it was aiming for.

There were some parts where I really thought the book would redeem itself, but then it fell flat.

Those who enjoy drama and deeper meanings, and more drama, you get the idea? This was almost like Pretty Little Liars or something along those lines, to some degree. It's actually difficult to try and categorise it to be honest.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received a free copy of this book as an ARC from the author.

Carson- husband, father, true crime writer.
Angela- wife, mom, psychiatrist for teens.
Eliza- 16, finding her place in the world, kind but lonely.
Ezra- 16, obsessed with serial killers, loner.

In walks Olivia. 16 with an an abusive father, she befriends Eliza and becomes obsessed with her family. When some of her behavior concerns Eliza, she separates herself from her new friend only for her to find Olivia has wrapped herself in her family by dating her brother and asking her dad to help her write a crime fiction book. Olivia’s true obsession? Ridding herself of her dad-by any means necessary. Little does she know, the Hunters are not as perfect of a family as they seem.

This book was like watching a lifetime movie. While certain aspects of the plot were predictable for me, I couldn’t stop reading to see if I was right and what plot twists appeared. I enjoyed the flashbacks to the previous crimes while unraveling the current one, and the connections the female villain created with this family were very intricately thought out-especially for a teenager. This would have been 5 stars for me had the plot had more twists and the predictability of a family ignoring the warnings of their teenage daughter not so cliche.

How much of an impact can one person have on a normal family? Is there any such thing as a normal family? The Hunters certainly appear normal; mom is a psychiatrist, dad is an author, brother is a typical reclusive teen, and 16-year-old Eliza spends her summer teaching ballets to young children. As it turns out, the Hunters are harboring secrets and just a few months after Olivia and her father move to town those secrets are in danger of being exposed. How far will they go to protect each other?

One section I highlighted from the book is, "Carson is well aware that people are complex. They aren't all good or bad." Faith Gardner is an author who is well aware of this. She creates multidimensional characters; most of whom embody this duality that exists in all of us and, for me, that is one of the things that sets her apart from many of her contemporaries.

I requested and received an advance reading copy in exchange for my honest review. After having discovered Faith Gardner's work this year, this was her eighth book I have now read.
