Discover the unspoiled beauty of Arkansas in N is for Natural State: An Arkansas Alphabet. Acansa is the Sioux Indian name for the state we know today as Arkansas and this begins our alphabet journey. Next you'll find Blanchard Springs Cavern with its 80,000 bats and then to D is for Diamonds, and learn the Natural State is the only state that mines them. Illustrator Rick Anderson's rich and colorful images bring the beautiful vision of Arkansas to all readers.
"N is for Natural State: An Arkansas Alphabet" by Michael Shoulders is a wonderful book about Arkansas! The book goes through several examples of Arkansas facts and history while alphabetizing it all! For the letter "C" the book talks about president Bill Clinton and his history in Arkansas and how he was governor. It also mentions hiking spots in Arkansas that are famous like Hawksbill Crag (I have hiked there before wooo).
I love this book, because it is a wonderful representation of Arkansas' many beauties. Of course this book is close to my heart, because I've grown up in Arkansas and I really think it is so so naturally beautiful. This book does a great job through the illustrations to accurately represent the beauty of Arkansas. I love how colorful and precise it is. The book is easy to read and very interesting!
Okay so maybe this book wouldn't be applicable for all schools, but I think it raises a very good idea. I think all students should be educated in the facts and history of the state they go to school in. Knowing where you're from or where you live is important, because it can give students a sense of belonging and pride about where they are in life.
This book mentions major events, people, places, and things about Arkansas from letter A to Z. Starting with the letter A and ending with Z, this book uses rhyming to tell a little about the history of Arkansas. On each page, there are a few short paragraphs to go along with each letter of the alphabet; the paragraphs go into further detail about each subject on each page. I really liked this book! The illustrations were gorgeous and life-like. I like reading A to Z books like this, especially on different states, because I think it's neat to learn about various things from each state that start with each letter of the alphabet. Even though I go to Harding, I didn't know some of the information that was in this book about Arkansas, so that was fun to read about. I could definitely use this book in the classroom when talking about the different states and to learn more about Arkansas. It would be fun to have a unit about each state, and to read this book when talking about Arkansas, or "The Natural State". It's a good book to read for the students to gain more knowledge about the different states, but Arkansas in particular.
This book fills its pages with details of Arkansas in an alphabetical format. It starts just by telling us where Arkansas got its name and then goes on to talk about our flag, or seal, Little Rock, and Dizzy Dean. The first lines you see are written large and very surface level. To the side are more detailed descriptions.
I liked this book because alphabet books are always fun. Kids know what is coming next and get eager to tell you. I particularly liked this one because it goes deep into the content. This would be a great book to read if you have a large variety of learners in your class. Slower learners will still get something from the short sentences but quicker learners will be eager to see whats on the sides.
N is for Natural State by Michael Shoulders is an A-Z poetry book about Arkansas. It mentions Arkansas' history, natural cites, and some towns.
This was a really cute book about Arkansas. I have lived here in Arkansas my whole life and I even learned some new things about the state. The illustrations by Rick Anderson are gorgeous. He perfectly captured some of my favorite spots including Little Rock and the Buffalo River.
I plan on teaching in Arkansas after I graduate, so I would love to have this book in my classroom. It would be great to use for teaching Arkansas history. It's also a poem, so I could use it to teach poetry.
It's difficult to find children's books about Arkansas, so I was excited to be able to get this from my library. This book is a wonderful overview of a lesser-studied state. When it comes to alphabet books, I'm always curious (and slightly critical) of what the author does for the hard letters Q, X, & Z, and this book doesn't disappoint at all! I like that you can read the larger print for younger kids, and there is extra info in smaller print that can be read for older kids. A really great book all around for the study of such an interesting state!
I liked this book for several reasons! First of all, it talks about my home state! Second, i love how this author uses the alphabet to tell a story of Arkansas. From people, to places to things from arkansas, its a story of the Natural State. I could use this book in my class for when im going over states or nature or rhyming because this book uses a lot of rhyming!
Such a cute book to read. It starts with the letter A and goes all through the alphabet naming important places and facts about the natural state. It's a great book to read to a class to give them some information on the state they live in.
This is an excellent book for al ages! It has lively illustrations, short poems, and longer descriptions of 26 aspects of Arkansas. I learned a great deal from this book! I love the questions with answers at the back!
full of interesting facts but at times too dry for a child
I have been looking for books for some kids I know and loved the “B is for Bluegrass.” Thought this would be fun, but it seemed a bit dry at times and interesting at other times. May be given to an older child.
I feel like this book would have been better had it been written by someone from the state. Some of the letters were good while others were lacking or a stretch.
