Maisie Doss reluctantly agrees to become a CI again. She goes undercover to infiltrate a ring of art smugglers. While she works to take down an empire of lies in the art world, she struggles to keep her secrets covered. Maise needs to untangle the lies around her to get on a path of redemption.

Maisie Doss Mysteries is a fun new series by Tonya Kappes. Maisie is complex, she sometimes bends the rules and walks at the edge of the law. She has trouble trusting especially those in law enforcement, but to her family and friends, she is loyal to the end. If there was a soundtrack for this book it would be "Goodbye Earl by The Chicks. The mystery is engaging and full of fun surprises.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.

Tangled Lies is another exciting installment in Kappes' Maisie Doss mystery series. This series is new with this being only the second installment, but it is becoming a favorite. I am really starting to enjoy this series and characters. This time Maisie is trying to end an art theft ring while also trying to solve a personal mystery of her own. Maisie has her hands full trying to tackle two cases at once while trying to start a new life for herself.

Kappes does a great job at setting up two completely different mysteries for Maisie to solve. The art theft ring is complicated enough but adding a personal case as well really makes the stakes higher. Maisie is developed really well, and the reader gets the opportunity to learn more about this complex character and her various relationships. I especially like her complicated relationship with her cousin, Boone. The book's mysteries are well done full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader's interest. Overall Tangled Lies proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Maisie's next adventure.

Maisie and Dixie find themselves in a heap of trouble but it's up to Maisie to use her criminal informant skills to work. While Maisie is working with art smugglers in the area she is also having to help her friend Dixie out. The girls are being blackmailed and they must figure out who is all behind it. I really enjoyed the plot twist and was eager to see how Maisie would get out of this alive. The narrator, Tiffany Morgan does a good job with the southern accent. The tones and inflections used are spot on. I enjoyed the emotions her voice portrayed with Maisie and Dixie.
This is perfect for fans of whodunnit, and mystery.

A very special thanks to Tantor Audio for the gifted audiobook.

Maisie Doss is walking a precarious tightrope in the one. She and her friend Dixie are being blackmailed while Maisie goes undercover to break up an art theft ring. Combining both situations creates a dangerous chess game. Complex relationships are also involved. This story kept me guessing until the end it concluded with a cliff hanger. Now I can’t wait to see what is next for Maisie.

I was fortunate to have received an advanced copy.

"Tangled Lies" by Tonya Kappes is book two in the "Maisie Doss Mystery" series. Once again, Maisie is asked to be a criminal informant to figure out who is taking different art pieces from an art museum. I am enjoying this series by Tonya. Maisie does her job by going undercover as Fonda and cleaning the museum at night to get a layout and do a little investigation. My favorite is how Maisie acts like she doesn't like Wes, but you can tell something is brewing with them. I can't wait to keep reading and see what happens next in this series.

I was looking forward to seeing Maisie Doss again in her home town of Camp Springs, Kentucky. She had completed her stint as a confidential informant and helped send the bad guys to prison. She thought the charges against her were dropped as a result of acting as a CI, that local law enforcement couldn’t bring them up again. She has a few surprises this time, and not all of them make her happy. This fast-paced novel takes the reader from working-class folks to some of the highest on the societal ladder.

Maisie Doss is a fascinating young woman who lives on the gray line between law and how her family lives their lives. Her parents worked hard, provided her with all their love and loyalty, but materially, little beyond the basics. She was okay with that, as her needs were minimal. Nobody in the Doss family had patience for law enforcement. Maisie and her cousin Boone, who was like a big brother to her, grew up with the same attitude about police and their ilk. They learned to shoot, ran around with their friends, and followed their own standards. Then someone claimed to witness a recent situation she and her best friend, Dixie, were in. Dosses are loyal to their family and loved ones, and Maisie won’t abandon Dixie.

Results of their actions came snapping at their bootheels. Dixie received one threatening note after another, claiming to know what they did and where. Sure, they did the deed, but loyalty takes priority over the law. Someone wanted them to pay for what they did. Maisie is seeking a fast solution since they prefer clothing from Dixie’s boutique rather than those ill-fitting orange jumpsuits.

In Sleight of Hand, the first book about Maisie, we met Wes, a US Marshal assigned to her case after she was caught for another little situation. Wes needs her help as a CI again, and this time, since she is not exchanging it for jail time, she makes certain demands and they put together a deal. Her unorthodox means leads to the threat that her charges could still be filed.

Boone helps her get work in a place she needs to be in order to accomplish the job, and she gains another alias. She studies the files and tries to keep Dixie calm, until the person sending notes demands a payoff.

Maisie did the best she could with the limited resources she has. Whether those solutions will be enough remains to be seen. The smugglers may have been behind the murder of the woman she met at the undercover job, and the person demanding hush money is still unknown.

This novel picks up shortly after Sleight of Hand ends, and is a fascinating look at how historical artifacts can easily disappear, as well as the other side of the tracks that Maisie knows and loves. I must admit, her solution was cleverer than any seasoned lawman could put together – but will it work? You have to read it to find out! The person demanding a payoff is quite a shock!

I highly recommend this to those who enjoy suspenseful, hard-boiled Southern mysteries with a clever, unlikely protagonist. Despite one’s love of law and order, one can’t help but to root for Maisie!

From a thankful heart: I received an uncorrected, prepublication copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Maisie once again finds herself being a Criminal Informant working to expose an art smuggling ring. And she also must find out who is threatening her best friend Dixie. Maisie has a lot to figure out and keep herself safe.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is well plotted and not easily solved.

I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a well written mystery. You cannot go wrong reading a story by this author.

In "Tangled Lies," the second installment of the Maisie Doss Mysteries, Tonya Kappes transports readers back to the picturesque settings of Northern Kentucky, immersing them in a tale brimming with mystery, betrayal, and the relentless quest for redemption. This gripping continuation of Maisie Doss's story captivates from the very first page, drawing readers into a web of intrigue that is as complex as it is compelling. I loved the first book in this new series and this one did not disappoint!
Maisie Doss has a troubled past and finds her hard-earned peace shattered by the arrival of cryptic notes that dredge up old secrets. These unsettling messages thrust Maisie into the thick of a new investigation involving an art smuggling ring that operates within her community's cultural underbelly. As she follows the trail of clues, the distinction between friend and foe becomes increasingly murky, challenging Maisie's ability to trust those around her.
Kappes excels at creating a rich, atmospheric backdrop that enhances the suspense. The serene landscapes of Northern Kentucky provide a stark contrast to the dark, twisting plot that Maisie navigates. The author’s descriptive prowess brings these settings to life, adding depth to the narrative and making the stakes feel real.
Kappes masterfully balances the suspense and the emotional weight of the story. The pacing is brisk, with each chapter unveiling new twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. The tension builds to a crescendo, culminating in a satisfying yet thought-provoking conclusion that leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.
Overall, "Tangled Lies" is a superb addition to the Maisie Doss Mysteries. Tonya Kappes has crafted a tale that blends Southern charm with gripping suspense, delivering a story that is both emotionally engaging and thrilling. Maisie Doss is a heroine worth rooting for, and her journey through danger, deception, and redemption is one that mystery fans will not want to miss. This book promises suspense, surprise, and the indomitable spirit of a woman determined to confront her past and protect her community.

Tangled Lies was definitely an appropriate name for this book. The web of lies running through this book was deep and difficult to break through. If you want answers, Maisie Doss is the woman for the job. Maisie is still trying to "clean up" her name from a past that still haunts her, which is why when she is asked to go undercover as a CI once again, she decides this will be another story in her favor. She teams up with her cousin, Boone, on this assignment. Boone teeters on the edge of the law in everything that he does, but his contacts will come in handy for this undercover operation as Maisie tries to break up an art smuggling ring at a local museum.

Maisie is in a juggling act right now as she is working on the CI case, and as she tries to calm her best friend, Dixie. Dixie is receiving threatening notes regarding her husband's disappearance. Dixie and Maisie know what happened, but no one else does.

Trust is not a word in Maisie's vocabulary, unless you are a family member or very close friend. She is fearless and smart as a whip. You do not want to tango with Maisie, as you will not outsmart this lady. She has keen observation skills, intelligence and street smarts, so you better be on your toes if you go head to head with this fireball.

I loved the twisty ending. I found myself clapping in glee when I saw where this was headed.

This is an interesting new series that I am thoroughly enjoying. If you want to take a little walk on the wild side skirting the edge of the law with a great cast of characters, you have found the perfect series. I anxiously await book #3.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Tangled Lies is the second book in the new Maisie Doss series by Tonya Kappes. In the previous book, we met Maisie Doss, who found herself on the wrong side of the law and in exchange for her testimony became a confidential informant.

This book deals with Maisie being pulled into service once again by Wes Dalton, the marshal in charge of her, to get information regarding an art-smuggling ring. While I liked the premise of the story of Maisie being a confidential informant and the storytelling of her past, her family, and her community, I just had a tough time getting past the inconsistencies in the story. For example, how did Wes know about the “notes and threats to your past”?

The overall story was a fun read, but I felt like there were too many moving pieces—Maisie going undercover at the museum, connecting with Kayla, the casino, Marcus, and the ending with Brime arresting people. I understand one of the main plots was the notes and secrets shared by Maisie and Dixie, but I felt like I was being hit over the head with it because it was brought up so many times!

While I had issues with the story, I really enjoyed the ending on who was sending the notes and was really surprised by that. It was a great ending to that storyline. I will read the next one because I do want to see where it goes with the ending of the story.

This is my honest review in exchange for an ARC of the story.

This is a wonderful edge of your seat book in the series with a flawed, clever, protagonist, Maisie who walks a very find line between legal and non-legal and her best friend Dixie. The two are close and hold a very dire secret about the disappearance of Dixie's husband, Earl. Maisie, having just come off an undercover job for the CIA and her handler Wes thought she was done it all that. With Dixie receiving threatening notes claiming they know what she did has Maisie and Dixie trying to discover the person behind the threats. But, Wes reappears with another undercover job for the CIA much to Maisie's chagrin. He wants her to go undercover in the art world to discover a huge smuggling empire. Not wanting to get involved again, our clever Maisie agrees because she will use the resources of the CIA to find the person who is threatening Dixie and take care of the situation once and for all with the CIA thinking it's all about solving the art case. Can she pull it off? Will she put herself in extreme danger with the art ring she is to out? Can she and Dixie live free of threats? Can she trust anyone? This is a page turning book that you just can't put down and now are waiting for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book as well as the first book in the series! I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I liked this book even if Maisie is still not a favourite of mine, oh i love her spirit and she is very independant and loyal but she plays in the grey a little too much to my taste.
She does nothing without something in return and while it's mostly for good reason i would prefer if she could trust and ask for help but it's not in her nature or at least trusting people outside her family is not

i do love her interaction with her cousin Boone, he has her back despite their past and he is taking risks for her

When Wes "force" her to become a CI again she sees than as an opportunity to find who is sending threatening letters whout law personnel knowing, of course. And that means going undercover in a very very risk job where people are all playing a game that could get you killed and Maisie does fit in all that a little too well

there are twists and action to keep you on edge and Maisie is so cunning that she will surprise you . That being said the cliffhanger will have you on edge for sure

good mystery to be recommended, better read in order

Tangled Lies is the second book in the Maisie Doss Mysteries by Tonya Kappes. I’m a huge fan of Tonya’s cozies, but really love her new series. It's much darker and less Dottie-esque. The books in this series take me a bit longer to read than other books/series in the author's catalog due to the complexity of the characters and plot.

Maisie is an extraordinarily complex character with a complicated past and a seemingly twisted future ahead of her. Maisie is a reluctant participant in another CI case. The new case involves an art smuggling ring, but Maisie uses this opportunity to also work on a side quest stemming from the end of book one.

This book was fantastic. Tangled Lies is an edge-of-your seat kind of mystery. There are twists and turns that take the reader on a wild ride. The author also continues the story revolving around a domestic issue with an old friend and side stories with friends, family, and co-workers. The author set the mystery up well and I was shocked at how everything played out. Well done!

I have been eagerly looking forward to Maisie Doss' return since she was introduced in the first book of this series. In this latest installment, Maisie and her best friend, Dixie, find themselves receiving concerning, threatening letters that have put them on edge. Luckily, Maisie is presented with the opportunity to go undercover as a confidential informant to help take down an art theft ring.

She sees this as a chance to not only assist in apprehending the criminals but also to investigate the source of the threatening letters. With the support of her cousin Boone, as well as some old and new acquaintances, Maisie successfully dismantles the art ring and uncovers the truth behind the letters.

"Tangled Lies" is a book filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep readers hooked. The characters are intricately developed, allowing for a deeper exploration of their relationships. Although the vivid imagery in the book may be overwhelming at times, it only enhances the overall reading experience. Once readers start this book, they will find it hard to put down.

This is the second book in this series; I also read the first book, but this book could stand alone. That said, I do think it’s best appreciated if the first book in the series was read first. Maisie’s a fantastic main character and I really like the two main mysteries in this book. There are still some things that I don’t find totally realistic, but the story is so good that I don’t really care. The writing is excellent and often absolutely beautiful, but there are some editing issues that I hope were fixed before publication, since I was blessed to be given an advanced copy. I don’t really like cliffhangers, but since most issues in the story were wrapped up well, I don’t mind the mini-cliffhanger too much. I’m just that much more eager to read the next book. I can enthusiastically recommend this book and the series; although I did receive the arc, these opinions are my own.

Maisie Doss just can’t seem to catch a break. She fulfills her obligations, but the law keeps coming back for more. This time she’s tasked with infiltrating an art smuggling operation. She receives help in unlikely places, makes promises she might not be able to keep and has no authorization to make, doesn’t follow the rules, and pushes the limits every step of the way, putting herself in danger. In her eyes, she’ll do whatever she has to do to bring down the criminals and get her own life back whether her “boss” approves or not.

Danger, surprises, twists, turns, and more! I love this new series!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Maisie Doss is at it again working for the authorities as a Criminal Informant. Maisie lives her life on the questionable side of the law and has found herself once again caught up in a tangled web of lies as she is forced to infiltrate an art smuggling ring.

Maisie is using her in with the authorities to uncover her own personal mess after mysterious and increasingly threatening notes begin to show up. Can Maisie lead authorities to the leaders of the smuggling ring while protecting her own secrets?

This is a fast paced mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Maisie is a sassy, rough around the edges character that you will route for the whole way. Read this book if you like cozy mysteries with a little extra grit and danger.

Maisie has a lot going on in her life as Tangled Lies begins. Between helping her best friend Dixie, who is reeling after receiving threatening notes from someone regarding her husband’s disappearance to beginning work on her next case as a CI, Maisie definitely has her hands full. This time around, Maisie is teaming up with her cousin Boone, who has some useful contacts that will come in handy to break up an art smuggling ring at the local museum. Maisie has some serious trust issues, but she is also witty, smart, and very observant to what’s going on around her. Tonya’s books are always great and Tangled Lies is no exception. I’m eagerly awaiting book three in this new and riveting series.

Maisie really did it this time! I was hopeful that Maisie would be living her best life. I should have known she would get sucked back in to the informant game. Maisie is trying to save herself and her friend from something they did a long time ago. Maisie takes on an assignment so she can research/figure out who has been sending her friend threatening letters. I took a guess on who I thought was sending the letters; I was right. Maisie comes up with a fabulous plan to take care of all of her problems and finally be free of the informant game. Just when I thought Maisie and Wes had things figured out between them, Wes figures out what Maisie had been hiding. The question that remains is....what will Wes do with that knowledge?

I am liking Maisie more in this story. The character is really developing. Maisie and Dixie are getting some threatening notes regarding their last caper with Earl. Someone knows what they did. But who? Wes shows up to ask Maisie to help take down an art smuggling ring. Then Wes is off the case, and no one is doing anything to help Maise. So, Maisie does what Maisie does best, she improvises. She finds a way to get inside the museum to uncover the culprits. She isn't sure who to trust and since she has no backup, she has to be very careful. How is she going to get out of this one? Maisie always has a plan.

Maisie is back and things are turning around for her! She has been asked by Wes to become a CI because they need her help figuring out an art smuggling ring. The timing is perfect because Maisie has a few things to figure out of her own and will need the resources she can access to figure it out and give her and Dixie some peace of mind. Maisie is quick on her feet and will need her family and all the skills she has to solve this one. There were some pretty big twists and turns that you won’t see coming. Maisie knows how to get the job done and I love her unconventional thinking and methods! I’m ready for the next story for so many reasons!

This is the second in the series. I am having a hard time liking Maisie. Everything is ”what’s in it for me.”
Even though I think Maisie has a long ways to seek redemption she is trying to help find the leader of an art theft ring. She’s a CI again and her cousin Boone has her back. With his connections, he gets her information she needs to keep herself safe. I like how they put their differences aside and know family is important. Maisie is using this CI job to determine who is threatening her friend Dixie.

The story is well-written, plenty of twists and yes, there is a cliff hanger.

I was given an advanced copy and not required to leave a positive review.

Totally different from her other books, author Tonya Kappes has created a new kind of hero and one I love. When asked to go undercover to find who is heading an underground art-smuggling ring that covers Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Maisie Doss agrees but with certain conditions. She is tired of being taken advantage of with nothing to show for her work as a confidential informant. True to form, she is soon working at the museum working to surreptitiously find the ones in charge of the art thefts. I love this series and have come to admire Maisie, who true to form does things her way. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Tangled Lies is the second novel in Tonya Kappes’ series featuring Maisie Doss, a confidential informant for Wes Dalton and the US Marshalls. She is now being asked to infiltrate an art smuggling ring in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Maisie sees it as an opportunity to escape her parents’ trailer in Camp Springs and put an end to a series of threatening notes that she and her best friend, Dixie, have been receiving regarding the “disappearance “ of Dixie’s husband, Earl. Kappes does an excellent job weaving the two mysteries with enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged until the end.

“Many of the boys growing up with us back in Camp Springs always said once a Doss stains you, no matter how hard you try, it’ll never come clean. Maisie got you?”

“The “ornery Doss” in me had indeed made its mark, but it was more than just a personality trait-it was a survival mechanism, a way of navigating the world that was uniquely mine.”

No better way to spend on a rainy day, than on an adventure with Maisie Doss. She certainly has a tangled web to unwind.
Museum, casino, mystery and intrigue. The story had me engaged and surprises I definitely didn’t see coming.

I received an ARC prior to publication and I decided to voluntarily review it.

Whoa! This book picked up right where the last one left off, but could certainly be read as a stand alone book. Maisie sure knows how to get into trouble and I laughed at some of the situations she got into this time. I did think the ending was a little rushed, there was a long build up and a short resolution. It didn't take away from the story any, it was still a great story, I just thought the resolution could have happened a little slower. Super big twist at the end, I did not see that coming! Can't wait to see what Maisie gets up to in the next book.

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.

Maisie Doss has a lot going on in this book. She is working with Wes again as a CI to help discover an art theft ring and dealing with some personal issues that she and Dixie are involved in. Maisie has her own personal compass and always follows her gut. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was rooting for her to succeed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a suspenseful mystery and a tough main character.

I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
