Two years ago, I got my sweet revenge and committed the most sinful act. Today I’m standing in the ashes of who I used to be. After losing everything, I’m left an easy target. I thought I had it all figured out, until the day I woke up in the basement of Dankworth Institute, a prison-like ward for people like me. Forever broken with no hope of ever being freed. People with tainted souls. Despite the facade of a psych ward, this place is anything but, for there is something far more sinister lurking inside these walls. All my life, I promised myself two things: do not trust anyone, and always stay by myself. Then I met him. The guy with sapphire eyes and an intensity that is enough to threaten everything I’ve ever fought for. His soul is just as broken as mine. And I know eventually, I will drown, either by him or this Institute.
Author’s Note: Ethereally Tainted is a dark psychological thriller romance. This is book one and ends on a cliffhanger. Full trigger warning inside the book.

I absolutely love the story about naya and grey! This is book one of the tainted souls trilogy. it is a dark romance, that is also psychological thriller, slowburn, mental health representation, past trauma, mysterious, and character driven.
Please check the trigger warnings but going in blind with just the tropes is so worth it.
My heebies are fucking jeebed 😭 this book lowkey broke me and I loved every emotion it brought out of me. My heart aches for naya and grey. The shit that they had to go through... THE BETRAYAL... THE HURT.. THE MIND FUCK !!?? nah i hurt everywhere. i love them and i already miss them.
there is no hea in this first book but onto book two i goooo 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️
This is a dark romance that touches mental health and psychological trauma. Check trigger warnings ⚠️ before reading.
I enjoyed reading about Naya and Grey, the thoughts that go through their heads and the struggles they have with their illnesses on a daily basis. Although I would have loved to have more of Greys point of view.
Naya and Grey have a connection and an unspoken understanding of eachothers demons. The chemistry between them was amazing.
This story is also a bit of a thriller that has sinister things happening in the background of Dankworth Institute, which is still needing to be unfolded and cannot wait to read about in book 2.
— I am honoured to having been an ARC reader of this book, after having enjoyed His Doll so much!
Ethereally Tainted is a dark romance book, while also being a psychological thriller. It definitely delivers the best of both worlds! Now, of course, a lot of heavy topics will be part of it, so please check the trigger warnings.
The story is vaguely connected to Rainelyn’s first book His Doll. I really loved seeing another story unfold with Grimhill Manor as its starting point. (You do not have to have read His Doll to read this one!)
This book is written in dual pov, meaning we get to experience both of the main characters’ thoughts and feelings. We, of course, get some more background information for Naya, as this is technically her story. I really enjoyed reading her and Grey’s thoughts as actually being impacted by their feelings towards their surroundings and also their mental illnesses.
The setting was, as to be expected by a thriller romance, spooky and not invoking a lot of trust; as in, I questioned everything and everyone from the get-go, just as the author probably intended. Dankworth Institute is a very mysterious place, masquerading as a usual psych ward. A lot of questions are still to be answered about it, making me look forward to the second book in this duet!
The love story was just unique. Grey and Naya find both comfort and uneasiness in each other’s darkness. They’ve been through a lot and either they’ll heal from it together or revel in what they’ve become and will continue to become together. I definitely loved seeing them connect. Personally, I thought some parts felt a bit rushed, though that definitely fitted their urgency to find someone to finally call their home and feel safe for once.
Generally, I can say I enjoyed this book. I was looking forward to seeing the story develop and I was not disappointed. Compared to His Doll, this one definitely had more action and more mystery to it. However, I feel like some bits still confuse me concerning the Institute, for example. I’m aware and also hoping that the second book will draw everything to an enlightening close!
I am so glad that I could read the ARC and let me tell you it did not disappoint.
Check the trigger warnings it's no joke⚠️
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 (4.75/5) 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I'm kinda speechless because what did I just read? It was beautiful but did it absolutely destroy me? Yes. Did it scar me? Yes. Would I be re-reading this? A 100 percent.
Book 1 in the Tainted Souls Duology, "Ethereally Tainted" is a dark psychological thriller Romance focusing on the lives of two students in the mysterious and spooky Dankworth Institute, Naya and Grey.
The book deals with topics such as traumatic past and mental health, which can be uncomfortable so it is advised to read the TWs. I personally love when my books have a justified portrayal of mental health.
Naya is determined to overcome her trauma but it still haunts her.
Grey is dark, angry, broken, unshakeable whose demons are calmed solely by her. (I kid you not when I say I'd read this just for this last line alone)
This was an emotional rollercoaster. The author manages to keep you on edge throughout the story. I wasn't just reading...I was physically present in the room with the characters and it was creepy, dark and the tension oh my god...a fun read!
The writing style was poetic and engaging. The characters were well developed, I tried to understand what they are doing why they are doing but it was still complicated and kept me invested throughout the book.
Tropes (to sum it up)
🔷MF romance 🔷Slow burn 🔷Dark Psychological thriller 🔷Possessive MMC 🔷Mental health 🔷 Traumatic past 🔷Touch her and die 🔷Gothic setting 🔷ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER
This slow burn, dark romance between Grey and Naya is book one in the Tainted Souls duet, and it's a dark psychological romance that is heavy on psychological past trauma and mental health representation. Naya and Grey meet at Dankworth Institute, which is a mysterious and creepy place for troubled youth. I really enjoyed this story and all the layers there were to it. This story ends on a major cliffhanger, and now I'm dying for the second book in this duet.
There are so many metaphors and similies. This then that. Repetitions and prolonged descriptions that just are not need, wish it wasn't some much there is beauty in simplicity, it ruined it for me, the story and plot is great though, though I wish the image i get of grey from description wasn't so off putting. (My opinion) although I do now have to read the second one now I have invested in the first. 😂 also I am reading on kindle and there are sooooo many spelling mistakes but it is easily read.
I don't think I've ever read a psychological thriller dark romance before but OH MY GAWD.
Im Obsessed
This is so well written that I was hooked from chapter 1 . It was so easy to visualize everything and my feels were in the hands of the author , i had absolutely no control over them.
I wish I read this sooner.
Definitely check TWs but go in blind as much as possible it's worth it ! If you can handle them I 100% recommend this book.
* my emotions are all over the place and I may come back and edit this down the road then I can deal*
Ethereally Tainted is a slow burn, dark romance with morally grey main characters - Naya and Grey.
We are introduced to Naya at the age of 7 when she finds her beloved father's body. He has been murdered by her mother. We then move ahead 13 years and find that Naya is living in a place called Grimhill Manor. This is supposed to be a place for orphaned children, but it is truly a place of horrors. The Master uses the children for his own fun and games. He calls them his dolls. Naya has been there over a year and seen so many innocent children tortured and killed. She is desperate to escape this hell.
You can never truly leave this place; it will stay with you until your last breath, imprinted in your mind.
When Naya finally does leave, she finds herself in a place called the Dankworth Institute. It is supposed to be a hospital for the mentally ill, but there's something else going on. She has a memory gap. She is told she was in an accident and sent there for evaluation.
Grey has been a resident of Dankworth Institute for many months and is focused on moving to the next department in five months. He has a couple of friends, but isn't looking for more. He wants to just do his time and get out. But then he meets Naya. He is immediately drawn to her and can't stop thinking about her.
...I yearn to own her so intensely that I know she will end up ruined if she becomes my new obsession.
Naya avoids him and pushes him away. "Every single person I care about always gets hurt." She needs to avoid making friends and focus on her escape.
This is a captivating dark tale. Please read the trigger warnings before opening the book as there is a great deal of content which may adversely impact your mental health. I felt safe to read this book and I will tell you, in a way, it broke me. My heart ached for what these characters endured. I kept thinking that their lives couldn't get any worse, and then it did. Naya and Grey endured tragic and trauma-filled lives starting when they were just children. I wouldn't wish their experiences on anyone. The fact that they were still standing, still fighting for survival and freedom after so much loss and pain...; they are survivors.
There was no HEA at the end of Ethereally Tainted, but there is hope as Tainted Serenity (Tainted Souls #2) is planned. I will definitely be reading it once available as I am invested in Naya and Grey's story, hoping can they find peace.
This was a hauntingly beautiful and tragic, psychological thriller that really messed with my mind. It continually had my emotions all over the place, my anxiety was at an all-time high level, and with each new layer brought forth I didn’t know what was truth and what was fiction. This author takes us down a dark and depraved rabbit hole of utter despair and destruction, and we, along with Naya have to try to climb our way out of the darkness.
The poetic and poignant way that the author weaves this dark and twisted story really brings every detail and emotion to life on the pages. There were moments that I could feel the despair and the confusion that Naya was going through. And the descriptive way that events were described I could almost feel, smell and taste everything as it was expressed on the pages. I could also hear that eerie, creepy, and enchanting melody that was continually playing in Naya’s mind. And it had me creeped out.
This amazing author paints a vivid and very descriptive picture of everything surrounding Naya and all of the torment she continually experiences. Drawn into a world of confusion and events that keep overlapping each other, not knowing what is the actual truth, what are lies, what is going on in this new place Naya wakes up to continually has her questioning why she can’t make heads or tails of everything.
Naya forms a bond with another inmate, Grey, who suffers from the same kind of demons trying to claw their way out. There is this intense pull they both feel towards one another. And this intensity only grows until it creates a fiery inferno, that they eventually give into.
"His presence brings stillness to my troubled mind and the demons in my head are silenced by the ones in his. Like two pieces of a puzzle, our souls fit together."
"When she kisses me back, it is like stars align in the darkness of my mind, the raw emotions glittering through me like a heavy downpour of rain.”
This story was well written with incredible imagery, thrilling suspense, creepy and gory moments, and with many unhinged and corrupt characters. The storyline is intense, heavy, dramatic, and insanely emotional. It pulls you in and keeps you enthralled in all of its darkness.
Be ready, because by the time you get to that last chapter, it will shock you and have you screaming WTF, at how this part of the story drastically ends.
Street Team/ARC review for ‘Ethereally Tainted’ by Rainelyn
‘Ethereally Tainted’ is a book 1 in the Tainted Souls duet and it’s a dark psychological romance with a heavy mental health representation and psychological past trauma. The story follows the life of Naya and Grey, two residents of Dankworth Institute, a very mysterious and ominous place for troubled youths.
One of the finest points of ‘Ethereally Tainted’ is author’s ability to create an atmosphere of tension and worry, throughout the story. The reader is all the time on edge, alerted, concious of something sinister hiding within the pages. And I loved that atmosphere, it gave a lot of horror like vibes and I couldn’t shake the feeling like I’m in some sort of haunted and demented reality. The writing style is fluid and immersive, it keeps readers invested in the story.
The characters, Naya and Grey, are well-writen and layered, with complex personalities and emotions. Naya wears scars from her past, she’s strong and driven to succeed in her mental struggles, but the abuse she endured as a child still lingers and affects her adult life. Grey on the other hand is like an untamed beast: he’s dark, dangerous, broken, and filled with rage, that only Naya can understand and subside. Those two together are like shattered pieces of a broken glass: damaged and sharp on the edges, but whole and unique when glued back as one.
‘Ethereally Tainted’ is definitely one of the most compelling books I’ve read this year. I loved how it entwined thriller and romance into one, and how faithfully portrayed people who struggle with mental health. However, I belive sensitive readers may find some of the aspects of this book to be uncomfortable. So please, go and check TWs before reading.
Note: This book is first in the duet, so it ends on a massive cliffhanger!

Naya wakes up in Dankworth Institute with little recollection of her past. She knows that something is not right. Naya stops taking her medication and the memories are coming back slowly. She starts to remember the past, and knows she’s not a good person. Naya needs to stay away from people they only hurt her. Then she meets Grey and the attraction between them is intense. They fight the attraction, but it’s getting hard. Can they find a way out ? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book. Love Naya and Grey they have an excellent dynamic. Great supporting characters. Read your trigger warnings heavy subjects. Dealing with mental illness. This is my first book by this author definitely not my last. Ohhhh my wow!! This book was intense!!! It’s dark.. twisted.. psychological trauma .. & just so intense!! Oh my gosh!!! Sooo freak’n good!! I couldn’t get enough & didn’t wanna put it down wanting to know what was going to happen or what was going on lol.. 😅 I still have soooo many questions ahhhh & that cliffhanger!! 😳 I need more!!! & I can’t wait till book two comes out!!🩵🖤
Aahhh I love Grey & Naya’s characters so much!! They are everything!! Aahhhh Must Freak’n read!!! Please read Trigger Warnings!!
“Life is tough, and life goes on, but the pain is always there, but that's okay because the scars we carry are proof that we survived the tough times.”
I do like a good dark psychological romance story - and this one did not miss. I loved how the story developed, but of course being apart of a trilogy it leaves on a cliffhanger! So brb as I run for book 2. I loved the story of Naya and Grey, and the added slow burn aspect? Fantastic. The setting was gothic and untrustworthy which added to the suspense and not knowing what is really happening until the end. It is written in duo pov which was an added bonus, and it allows you to gain the story of both characters without taking away from the suspense of the overall plot. This book had me questioning everything and everyone, I felt like I might be going insane because I was just like wtaf is the truth. Naya is determined to overcome the trauma that haunts her while Grey is angry and broken whose demons are calmed solely by Naya. I love the soul connection Rainelyn brings to her books, it just makes the experience even more emotional. So yes I am currently running to book 2 because I need to know what happens even tho I’m emotionally devastated currently after this one 🥲.
“How many horrible moments does it take to go insane? How much does it take for a person to completely lose their mind and turn into a single empty shell without a soul?”
🖤 slow burn 🥀 mental health rep 🖤 obsessive/possessive characters 🥀 corrupted mental institute 🖤 touch her and d*e
I am left feeling things!! Okay first off…the way this was written was beautiful!! Perfectly dark gothic-y vibes all the way BUT what stuck out to me was the entire energy and story! This felt like a much darker version of the movie Shutter Island!! Like at first I’m like okay this has to be happening and then I’m like ummm okay maybe this isn’t happening? Literally spent a good 80% questioning what was reality and what was figments of a dark and damaged mind…our FMC Naya, I loved her. Not so much her actions but they absolutely made sense and the way her mind was working (hit home sometimes). Then we have Grey…moody, broody, tatted, the smirkkkkkk! Now I know he’s not a golden retriever in the typical sense but I have to call him a faded golden retriever 🤣. He isn’t the darkest more messed up MMC I’ve encountered but the way he handled himself and being an anchor 🥹😍
But RAINELYN!!!! THIS CLIFFHANGER….HOW DARE YOU! Thank goodness book two is available because….NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Yeahhh so think a DARKER Shutter Island meets One Flew Over The Coocoo’s Nest and boom we have Ethereally Tainted🖤
This book was a total mind f*ck. I felt as if I was going through the memories and experiences with Naya. The number of people Naya has lost and everything she's suffered through is incredible. I felt so angry for Naya through a lot of this book.
With a brutal prologue, I had to know where this story was headed. I have questions about the Darkmore Institute and what is truly going on there. I also have a lot of questions about the ending.
So much of this book was WTF? But in an, I've got to keep reading, kind of way. I'll definitely be reading the next book.
There is some spice as Naya and Grey's relationship developments, but there is more plot than spice, which is absolutely necessary for this storyline. 🌶🌶
*Check the TW for this book as there are many. This isn't just dark romance, it's a dark psychological romance.*
Jesus Christ what was this book. I absolutely loved it n the cliff hanger have me wanting more. At the beginning it took me quite some time to catch hold of thw story but after that i was hooked, n i still am. Im in love with love story of Grey n Naya, their story is absolutely twisted n dark which actually adds spice to this story. Omg i need book 2.
This is a slow burn dark romance and psychological thriller following Naya at Dankworth Institute. This book has some heavy triggers and some equally heavy scenes so tread lightly! it does end on a cliffhanger so you better be prepared to pick up book 2 immediately 😌🫶🏻
Oh my goodness, I binge read this, and the ending has me ready for more! It's such a beautifully dark story that leaves you questioning each turn of the page.
This was an Awesome Dark Psychological Thriller book. Please read the triggers warning in this book. This is book one , of the Tainted Souls series. Yes, this book does ends in a Cliffhanger, but the next book is out now, that way, you can read them back to back. It been a long time, since I read a dark Psychological Thilller, but this book, will not disappoint you. I Totally Recommend, this book. I was Totally obsessed , with it, I brought my tablet to the bathroom, with me (TMI) 😂😂😂. 💓 Grey and Nayas. This books has Sooo Much. It has vibes with gothic, dark, angst, duel point of views, twists and turns, mental health, elements are so many, the setting is describe perfectly, madness, slow burn, romance, loves the quotes this book has, entertaining, haunting, page turner, steamy, hot, tear jerker, unpredictable, wonderful characters, its like you feel what they feeling, and so much more. I Totally Recommend this book. Remember it does, ends a Cliff Hanger, but the book is out now. 💓 it
This is a good initiation to a promising addicting duet. The dark atmosphere is adequately portrayed by the author's writing skills.
The moment Naya and Grey met, I knew these two would deliver one hell of a story. This book provoked so many feelings in me. From curiosity to anger, longing, sadness, and happiness.
The action is slow in picking up but once it gets going it takes you to the very end keeping you at the edge of your seat. The chemistry between main characters is palpable from the very beginning.
Although I liked the introduction to the first story in this duet, the author took her time in showing the ropes of what would come, the mystery we see from the very beginning keeps getting thicker with every line and you start questioned everything and everyone. I can't wait to get back and learn more of this twisted and depraved world.
I won't say much more on the story because I feel it's a good series to go in blind. I will say.. I loved, I'm now obsessed and can’t wait for the next book.
Wow. I had an idea of what to expect going into Rainelyn’s “Ethereally Tainted” but I got so much more! This book is a psychological thriller romance on steroids… in the best way possible! This was my first Rainelyn read and now I want to go back and read more and can’t wait for the second book of this duet!
The descriptive writing and the inner monologues of the MMCs was so beautifully written, it was like I was there, walking along side them throughout their story. There is little dialogue in comparison which is new for me in a dark romance read but I really enjoyed it! I like getting into the minds of the characters and for what this duet is about, you WANT to know what’s going on inside their head! That’s where most of the story lies. They’re tapped in their minds and that’s how the book was written… in my opinion at least!
Naya, aka Lily Blight, is tossed around from institution to institution and just when she thought she escaped her hell (well physically at least) she discovers that isn’t the case. Grey Madden is someone she never saw coming, and same for him! They both are loaners with a stomach full of regret and no room to love or care for someone else. BUT THEY DO! There is a lot of angst with these two but when they finally let the walls down, it’s full speed ahead on their romance journey. Once they give into each other, that’s that. They’re attached for life. Ethereally tainted together.
But… we don’t get our HEA with this book. OH NOOOOOO! Rainelyn had to leave us with the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers and now I’m DYING for book 2! I can’t wait to read more and I am hoping to have more of Grey’s POV to realllly get into his inner workings. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a good slow burn, psychological thriller, dark romance trope!

Good grief! This dark, disturbing story is Hunger Games on steroids. She's crazy, he's crazy, and I'm crazy to finish this duet.
From the confines of a horrific and deadly prison where children are treated like dolls and forced to play a twisted game of chance, Naya is sold into a life of triggering pain and anguish that never lets up. Spiraling out of control after witnessing a shocking event at her previous institution, she is placed in a psychiatric hospital which has undertones of evil and malice. It's her connection with a tall blue-eyed man that helps her to cope as the two broken souls try to find their sanity and a way to escape.
Naya just can't catch a break. Ever since age 7 witnessing her father's murder at the hands of her psychotic mother, she has had a disturbing and heartbreaking life. Trapped in an institution where children are treated like dolls and murdered at the drop of a hat, Naya's sanity is questionable as she is injected with who-knows-what and left on her own. After witnessing another event, she is shipped off to what appears to be a psychiatric hospital where she connects with Grey who is as broken as she is and understands her pain. As they slowly fall for each other, they wonder if it could last considering where they are. And then they find something eerily amiss as they start to discover dead bodies and find their own lives in danger. Will they survive, or will this be the end? After the shocking ending, I'll have to wait and see in the next book.
I was captivated by this book as it drew me in and took me on a downward spiral of angst, depression, and despair. It was a bit repetitive, but not enough to where I didn't want to finish it and find out what happens to Naya and Grey.
If you love a good psychological thriller, pick up this book but be aware of triggering events. I can't wait to read the final book in the duet.
Thank you to Rainelyn for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
Do I recommend it? Yes but please check the trigger warnings first.

Tropes: dark psychological thriller romance, suspense, slow burn, forced proximity, possessive anti-hero, touch her & die, scarred pasts
Together, their inner demons meld into one. Two years ago, Naya got sweet revenge and committed the most sinful act. Toda, she's standing in the ashes of who she used to be. After losing everything, she’s left an easy target. She thought she had it all figured out, until the day she woke up in the basement of Dankworth Institute, a prison-like ward for people like her. Forever broken with no hope of ever being freed. The people there have tainted souls. Despite the facade of a psych ward, this place is anything but, for there is something far more sinister lurking inside these walls. All of her life, she promised herself two things: do not trust anyone, and always stay by herself. Then she met Grey. The guy with sapphire eyes and an intensity that is enough to threaten everything she’s ever fought for. His soul is just as broken as hers. And she knows eventually, she will drown, either by him or this Institute.
This story was an utter mindf**k. I have a distinctive past fighting for my mental health, so I was able to relate with Naya & Grey a great deal. Dankworth Institute would be a living nightmare for me, therefore I struggled a little at first. This author has an incredible talent for writing with poetic yet realistic descriptions. I felt the cold, smelled the mildew, and embraced the atmosphere as if I were walking the halls myself. I loved all the characters. The chemistry and connection between the main characters carried an intensity that was impossible to ignore. There are some serious triggers, so please educate yourself before reading. If dark romance isn't usually your go-to, I would pass on this one. Otherwise, prepare for a twisted ride that will have you questioning everything. I'm looking forward to book two. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
PLOT: It got my infinity stamp! I absolutely cannot wait for book 2! The plot clings to you, makes you want to devour the novel in one sitting, it is very interesting and the need to want to know what happens to the characters is beyond daunting.
CLIFFHANGERS: The book ends with a damn cliffhanger! I DEMAND BOOK 2! There are many cliffhangers throughout the novel, and that is defiently a secret to good writing, making the readers hooked in a torturous matter. I loved the cliffhangers in this novel.
SPICE: THE SPICE IS SPICY AND I LOVE IT! It definitely had me fanning myself. Also, the spice scenes were very meaningful and hearttouching. I loved it. Yes, I am twisted that way.
DETAILS: The books is very detailed, I read it twice loving the details of it. The hidden meanings and messages that you need to cling to throughout the book to find out the truths through the novel, the details had me seeing a film inside my head as I read, LOVED IT.
EMOTIONS: I cried throughout this novel. The way Naya and Grey feel is heartbreaking, and I love heartbreak and unfortunate events throughout novels.. Those tears are worth crying for.
Author Rainelyn did an amazing job with this piece of work! I LOVED IT MORE THAN HER FIRST DEBUT NOVEL AND IT SHOWS THE PROGRESS THE AUTHOR WENT THROUGH. I recommend everyone to read this novel! If you love Psychological thrillers, suspense and slow-burns. This book is for you. Of course with some spicy darkness, you are bound to fall in love.
