The spirit of Christmas carries through another Sam Shovel Mysteries by Patricia Meredith. Sequel to Death of a Christmas Trees Salesman, Sam Shovel is back for another mystery set on the North Pole Express.
This year, Sam and Kertas decide to take a trip on the North Pole Express in hopes of a more relaxing Christmas. After last year's murder investigation, a much needed break was earned, though it doesn’t last long. After Sam meets a conductor no one else has seen, he’s melted, and suspicions begin to rise as one oddity after another occurs on the train. Trapped on the train, Sam and Kertas get to work solving who might be behind it all.
This was a delightful read! Full of charm, holiday spirit, a loveable quirky cast, whimsy and mystery to pull it all together. In addition to this, we see just how much Sam and Kertas’ friendship has grown as they work together to solve the mystery. While some of the cast was familiar from book one, others were new, adding more holiday history and lore into the mix. I love that Patricia Meredith continues to expand the world, giving old and forgotten traditions new life.
Compared with book one, the mystery and stakes aren't as intense. The stakes are still there mind you, and there is plenty of mystery but I didn’t get the same thrill as book one gave me. That being said, this added a cozy vibe to the overall whimsical goose chase Sam and Kertas set out on. Overall, there’s a charm in Patricia Meredith’s writing that effortlessly pulls you into the world and characters.
As I couldn’t wait for my physical copy to arrive, I listened to the audiobook performed by Andrew D. Meredith. He gave a wonderful performance, breathing life into the characters with unique voices, showcasing exactly why he’s a narrator to follow.
I would recommend reading Death of a Christmas Tree Salesman prior to this to fully enjoy the character connections and references. However, Meredith does well at giving brief insight to the references should readers choose to dive into book two first. This was smartly woven in as it gives readers the option to read it as a standalone, should they choose to.
If you’re in the mood for some holiday cheer with quirky characters, mystery and delicious food, I can’t recommend this series enough.
