I made it back across the cut. Unfortunately, things changed while I was away.
I brought with me an update to the system that spreads like a virus from person to person, bringing with it a new level to the Rebuild America System, politics. A presidential election, the results of which would give someone the power to adjust the system and bend it to their will.
The war between the Horde and the Remnants grows more fierce every day. Border skirmishes are near constant, and men and women water the sands of the wastes with their blood. My people, Pott’s Field, are caught in the middle.
Neutrality is getting harder, and it’s only a matter of time before war begins in earnest.
Luckily war, unlike politics, is something I understand.
This final book in the series had a substantially different tone to the first two books. Donovan spent much of his time resisting social entanglements while trying to follow a path that was true to his nature. His growing list of successful missions only served to raise his profile with the various societies in the waste, making it harder for him to glide through life unentangled.
I found this ending to be satisfying. The broader wastes seemed to have a bright[ish] future and Donovan finally found a role he could play that didn't compromise his needs or those of his people. It was sweet.
Okay folks this is the last book in the series. I Bing read the entire series while it was up on Royalroad and I must say I really enjoyed it. Granted I thought it was extremely light on the litrpg. I mean it could have been left out completely and I don't think it would hurt the story at all. Feel free to leave a comment if you disagree because it has been a bit since I read this series. This is just my way of trying to help out the author since he was nice enough to leave the entire three book series up on Royalroad for a while before he published on KU.
I really hadn't planned to get the audiobook, but then I remembered that Heath Miller was the narrator and I found that I couldn't resist! Heath Miller's voice performance is just perfect and maybe even surprising in this trilogy! I really loved it! CB Titus writes from a unique perspective. And he pulls out all the stops writing this third and final book. Be aware that Deadmen are a species of beings and Not Zombies, so kick that silly notion of zombies right outta your head! Although they're not quite against eating human flesh or even other Deadmen but only in the direst of need or in anger. Donavan, the OP MC is a Marshall and trying to stop the injustice that's been piled on to his people. He needs to Stop the human corruption as they themselves build up their defenses with plans to destroy all the Deadmen... so latch onto the book find out how Donavan can succeed... There may even be tears...
In spite of all the violence, as this is not a PG-13 type of novel. I found a couple of quotes that shouldn't offend anyone, but they did amuse me:
"I leaned forward, ensuring he was poisoned just enough to take him out of commission but not enough to kill him. “Tell them, ‘Send ten next time.'”
“Anyway, here’s ‘Here Comes the Moon,’ by the Beetles.”
The book was a fun read like the two before it. It just ended a bit quickly. I thought the plot point about Donovan finding the last book in this long series he has read pretty funny. The whole thing with the book was a metaphor about how if stories go on for too long they lose their themes and direction. So I get what the author was getting at, but I still think it all ended just a bit quickly. It was still a very fun read, and I think all of the Fallout tropes in the story were taken to a logical conclusion.
Amazing end to the series. The plot did not overstay. It was one of the best litrpgs I have read and the best emotionally crafted litrpgs ever. I will fight anyone that says otherwise. This last book has the classic formula of slow start then plateau then a sprint to the end. Very classic trilogy that is not done or not done well in litrpgs but is beautifully executed in this book.
Prefect ending, complete and utter satisfaction!! Writing a solid finale, a comforting but thrilling ending to a story, is no easy feat. C.B. Titus though has a gift for such I've rarely seen anywhere else, to take a story full circle in absolutely BRILLIANT fashion and leave me thinking about the adventure months later. This is a good book, a Grand series, and a FANTASTICAL read overall I highly recommend it!!
I think this book wasn’t quite a five star for me but the ending bumped it up. I wanted to see Donovan explore more and yet I can acknowledge that would have made the series drag out and arguably opened it up to lowering the story’s quality. I was wondering how it could end and I really liked how the author did it.
I loved this series, Donavan is an excellent MC, and the secondary characters add a lot to the story. The only thing is Donavan turned into a god basically, and that line of writing is getting pretty common. I would highly recommend this series, one of the best!
There isn’t an aspect of this book I didn’t like and it’s one of the better post-apocalyptic series I have come across in recent memory. I am looking forward to reading more by this author as they are published.
An excellent ending to a wonderful violent story! Kind of sad that this is the end. Hope there will be more stories about this world, some spinoff would be amazing!
