As a child, Nova Orion's space-faring grandfather taught her how to navigate using the stars, tie a hundred kinds of knots and the importance of a well-placed kick. She spends her youth using these skills to try and stay out of trouble. Plagued by her own bad decisions, she is overwhelmed by the untimely death of her beloved guardian and grandfather, and she believes the only thing she has left to her name is a juvenile arrest record. But then her inheritance includes a spaceship and the encrypted journal of her late grandfather. She begins to wonder how many secrets she's been kept in the dark from all of her life. When someone tries to kidnap her, she endeavors to find her place among the close-knit crew, but struggles to understand what being a captain really means and in whom she can place her trust. Who can she turn to when she has no family left? What is it that her grandfather wants her to find? Is Nova ready for the adventure before her?
A thoroughly enjoyable inaugural work that will capture the attention of fans of sci-fi and beyond. There were times when I swore we were in the midst of an episode of Firefly. I am certainly captured by the depth of Miss Orion's character, and look forward to following her adventures.
