Fighting Words

Rate this book
Hate turns to heat when a literary grump meets his deadline savior.

My assignment is simple: trek to a remote English cottage and convince Nathaniel Foster to let me work with him.

Too bad he’s a complete and utter jerk.

Who slams the door in a poor stranger’s face, leaving them shivering out in the snow?! So much for a warm welcome…

Nathaniel is God’s gift to readers everywhere. My publisher is desperate for his next book, which in turn makes me desperate to help him complete it. So what if he doesn’t want to play nice? I have no choice but to live and work with him in this snow-covered cottage, suffering under his piercing blue stare until it feels like I might combust.

Our heated exchanges by day give way to torturous tension at night. I can’t clock out from his all-consuming presence. I can’t escape my unwanted feelings. When one of our arguments nearly ends in an angry kiss, I worry the writing is on the wall.

But I can do this. I can clench my teeth, ball my fists, and focus on this damn book. If I can just keep the fiction and fantasy between the pages and not between the sheets, I’ll be the hero of the publishing world.

So pick up your pen, Nathaniel—and please, please, stop looking at me like that.

❛❛ When you’re over there, so far away, don’t forget you’re mine.You’re mine. ❜❜

synopsis : Summer, the female main character, was a freshly hired developmental editor at InkWell. she was assigned the incongruous task of traveling to England and staying in a small and freezing town called Sedbergh. in order to convince, the literary legend, Nathaniel Foster to complete and submit the third and final manuscript for the bestselling Cosmos trilogy. but what was her surprise when she came across a man who was brooding and somewhat reclusive instead of the genius author she once admired.

❥ roommates to lovers
❥ workplace romance
❥ grumpy & sunshine
❥ strangers to lovers
❥ stranded together
❥ romantic comedy
❥ forced proximity
❥ hate to love
❥ slow burn
❥ age gap

R.S. Grey once again delivered a romantic comedy that was filled with excellent banter, exquisite verbal jousts, and a compelling chemistry between the protagonists. blending all these prefect ingredients together the author managed the relationship to be drawn in a realistic manner through the storytelling. what I adore about this author's plume and writing style is that there's no trace of toxic femininity present in it. Summer was no exception to the rule; she was a girl's girl. but, she was also self-driven, ambitious, and a perfect ray of sunshine.. well, up until Nate entered the picture. nonetheless, i loved as well the other fierce version that he brought out of her. Nate was your typical grumpy and not so-friendly male main character. he despised the constant presence of Summer in his vicinity. because he simply loved his quiet life as a loner, but it quickly morphed into him not wanting to live in his cottage because of the undeniable attraction that pulled between him and Summer.
all in all, it was a quick and fun read with a somehow atypical narrative !

(ARC provided by Grey’s Promotions)

Summer Collins lives in New York where she recently took a new position as a developmental editor with InkWell. She's eager to prove herself and has agreed to travel to the English countryside in the hopes of convincing a famous American author to work with her on his manuscript. Nathaniel Foster is not what she expected. The man is gorgeous, mysterious, and a grumpy jerk, but she has a job to do, and isn't going home until it's done. Now she just has to figure out how to get through to him. She needs to turn around his bad attitude so he lets her stay.

Nate lives in a small town in a cottage in England and values his privacy. He moved there looking for a change of scenery that would spark something new within, but he was still suffering from writer's block. He had promised to deliver the third book in his popular award-winning series, but had missed all his publishers deadlines. He'd become an isolated recluse living out in the middle of nowhere, and didn't like strangers. When an unwanted houseguest arrives he wants her gone. He's under a lot of pressure, and not looking for help. He doesn't think he needs a partner, but he seems to get one anyway. As they clash the tension evolves into something they can't explain. Soon they both can't avoid feeling too much, and lines quickly get blurred.

Fighting Words by R.S. Grey is a small town, forced proximity, slow burn, age gap, grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers romance full of emotion, humor, fabulous chemistry and amazing banter. I really enjoyed this story and loved these characters together! <333

why was i more invested in the book they were writing? I need The Last Exodus and Echo of Hope like right now.
How did Amelia and Julian ended up together hm? they hated each other 😤 the enemies to lovers is killing me!! did marcus die sacrificing himself for amelia?? Was julian jealous? did they find life on the planet they discovered??

r.s grey drop the trilogy asap.

anyways summer and nate didn't serve anything. summer was one of the most annoying and stupid, immature h i've read in a while and nate had no personality beside growling and acting like a feral animal.
the insta lust killed what little tension they had. the drama with summer's on and off bf andrew just took me out of their relationship every time he was mentioned and he was mentioned all the time!!! Like they were on break but she always felt guilty, always texting and calling him and thinking about poor andrew. Was the romance between her and nate or her ex bf???

"I’m just not there yet, but I love Andrew. I know I do. He’s such a good man.
“I miss you too,” I said, feeling it. “I wish you were here.”

You and Andrew are ongoing, correct?”
“We’re… I guess, yes,” I stammer.

"Losing Andrew as a boyfriend has come second to losing Andrew as a friend. I didn’t realize how much I was missing him until now."

"I’m feeling twisted up inside. Angry and guilty and resentful.
Andrew and I probably should have had sex tonight."

"No one needs to explain to me all the ways Andrew is a total package. I know that. He is not the problem, I am."

then poor andrew came to england to win summer back and i can't believe how many ch were wasted on that shit. get him out out of here, i don't care about fucking andrew!!!! this whole book was summer's sobfest, how poorly everyone treated her, how she is the black sheep in her family, how mean is her sister. just poor sweet summer always the victim 🙄 girl kept justifying herself and her stupid decisions, comparing nate and andrew this whole book.

she and andrew deserved to be miserable together. i wasn't the biggest nate's fan but he deserved better than can't decide if i want my ex back summer .

i only forced myself to finish for the ameliajulian crumbs.🥲

I think I might have outgrown R.S.Grey. I used to love her books, but haven't been a fan of her latest ones.
I have to re-read an older book of hers to make sure, but I feel like her writing style has changed over the years, which, fair. However, I feel like there is more telling than showing. paragraphs on end, with little interactions between characters.
On top of that, Summer comes across as very naive. And I wish the author had mentioned that Summer had this on-and-off boyfriend. I felt that Andrew (the other guy) deserved better. Why on earth Summer didn't end that relationship properly when it was clear that she wasn't into it, I don't understand. That clearly shows how juvenile she is. I might be too old for this.
And tbh, I think I enjoyed the book for about 20%. The rest was filler, and all mostly about Summer's indecisiveness about Andrew, and her family issues.
Fighting Words was a close dnf several times, but I still wanted to read to know what all the 4 and 5 stars ratings were about. This was not it.

RS Grey is VERY hit or miss for me but this one was super snuggly and cozy and I ate it right up. Does it defy logic for an editor to live with an author to help plot a book? Yes. Did it also defy logic for the editor to yell and berate said author? Yes and double yes. But it worked for me and gave me The Holiday country cottage vibes so I’m here for it. But also there’s kind of a love triangle (boo) and a heroine who needs to grow the hell up and stop being so obsessed with what her family thinks (is this a real thing? Come on, people, dont be like this,) but overall I’m just slumpy enough to not care about these things and move forward and be happy for this happy little couple.

3.75-4.25 stars (depending on the day)

This book is probably the most real argument I've read between the FMC and the MMC in a romance book ever. Summer and Nate's relationship seems honestly true to life. I mean, the whole reason why she's there and that she ends up staying with him is on par with 'not totally real life, but real romance book life,' the arguments seemed pretty true to form for me. The language used, the internal thoughts. I don't know, maybe I just argue weird.

The tropes in this book are just some of my favorites:
-Strangers to enemies to roommates to lovers
-Workplace romance
-Forced proximity
-Grumpy/Sunshine

The build up and the angst was great. The "finally!" moment was delectable. Their conversations (when he wasn't grunting at her) were yummy. The vulnerability was delicious.

I'm not a fan of virgin FMC and while Summer wasn't a virgin, she's only been with one guy, which makes her practically a virgin, but we actually get to see the reasons why she's with Andrew and it makes sense. I love how the love triangle mirrored the one in Cosmic Penance. The parallels between Amelia, Marcus, and Julian with Summer, Andrew, and Nate were so much fun to read. I mean, Marcus IS a good guy and we ARE supposed to like him which makes the whole thing so much bittersweet. It was handled well, I think.

I was just a little sad towards the end of the book since it didn't look like it was going to end the way I wanted it to, but then IT DID (kinda) and I got happy again. I wish the epilogue was the last chapter and there was a different epilogue, but I'll take what I can get.

Thank you R.S. Grey and Grey's Promotion for providing this book for review consideration.

“I crave Nate’s thoughts like they hold the key to my happiness.”

Happy release day to Nate & Summer!!

The banter in this one was gold. It definitely had me chuckling a few times during their interactions & fights. They could both dish it back to the other.

I loved Summer’s determination to help Nate and Nate was not having it. But slowly the forced proximity melted those barriers. They had great chemistry and you could feel that push-and-pull between them. Like, just kiss already!! 😍

The town was so charming, Sedbergh, England. I wanted to be walking down those streets with them! And Nate’s cottage sounded so cozy.

I was worried with how it was going to end but it was a cute ending that had me smiling like an idiot. I just wish maybe that could have been more the last chapter of the book and we had a different epilogue of them once they were back together. But it was still cute!

R.S. Grey knocked another one of the park! I love Rachel’s books and can’t wait for more from her in the future. 💜

“No, Summer. You were the absolute best thing.”

i enjoyed summer and nate’s romance. it has the sunshine/grumpy trope in a little isolated cottage in europe between a writer and an editor. the attraction was obvious from the start but things were complicated on both fronts. overall, it was a chill read.

Having read more than a dozen of Grey’s books, she rarely disappoints! What an absolutely adorable feel good book. It’ll make you smile throughout, even when things go wrong and when there are fights, the writing will still put a smile on your face because of how real and genuine the words were.
In addition, the banter, chemistry, the heart, the core of the main characters and their relationship development were all exquisite 🤌🏻 as well! 5 stars 🌟

I love RS Grey’S Romcoms- her books are packed with either enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, colleagues to lovers…. She is the Queen 👸🏻 of this genre I’m my opinion.

📖 This one is prominently set in country England. The isolated English cottage reminded me of the #holidaymovie & the place Kat winslet character lived in. Loved that vibe so much for this story!
This read probably wasn’t my favourite of Rachel’s I’m afraid. I still enjoyed aspects of it- a book about an author with writers block, the banter between Summer & Nate. I just didn’t connect with them as much as I had hoped! Not to say you shouldn’t pick this one up!

📖If you enjoy a fun, quick reads, the definitely pick this one up. It’s a standalone (which most of Rachel’s books are) so you can absolutely start with this one if you’re new to Rachel’s books!

📖 3.5🌟 read. Thanks to Rachel & the guys at Greys promotion for this ARC to read and honestly review. 🤩

Finished It Smiling

This is going on my list of favorites by this author. It’s sunshine/grouch and I loved it. Taking place in a small village in North England was the icing on the cake for me. It’s a wonderful romance but it also shows so much growth especially for the fmc who has usually been counted out by her over achieving family. She really comes into her own with this one. As far as the hero, he’s been hurt by a past relationship so he lives a remote closed off life even though he’s an author of the caliber and celebrity of a Stephen King. He has lost his will to write the last book in a trilogy and the heroine has been sent by the publishers to get him to start writing. It’s a last ditch effort by them as several have already been sent and failed. It became a journey for them both. The village and of some of the people there become secondary characters I enjoyed as well. There’s also a cat and dog involved. I’m always there for that too. All and, a good book that was well written and romantic.

I can’t believe I almost gave up on this in the first 15%. It seemed a little too typical in plot and trope and I thought it was going to drag. But after the first hint of attraction hit between the two main characters I was hooked. If you love slow burn, completely swoony romance this is the one. There are a couple nitpicks they keep it from being a full 5 stars, including some entanglement with her ex boyfriend that’s in “complicated” stage, but nothing major and not enough that I wouldn’t read it again. And I’m 100% going to go grab more from RS Grey. I haven’t loved a contemporary romance this much in a while.

forced proximity featuring a down bad reclusive introvert is something so serious for the malewife council recruiters . he was playing games acting like her man in his house wasnt gonna make him crazy pls be serious ! 🙄

“i need to get out of the house and away from summer. except bloody hell, my jacket smells like her. this is the one she wore into town today.”

read this before ramadan then paused and finished after. this was cute at the start and i had hope bc it was publishing characters but it fell off… like a bad and rush soap opera by the end. also girl dinner referenced and wrongly at that my eye twitched a lil

“You know, it’s funny. That’s the way I usually am, shy and quiet. Ask anyone. I’m not this person. You bring it out of me. The very worst.” She cocks her head and props her hands on her hips, matching my stance. “Proud?” “Extremely.”

R.S. Grey writes some pretty good rom coms and this one was no different. Summer & Nate's chemistry made me feel butterflies and I loved their banter, it was wholesome and quite entertaining! The way the goaded each other and then it turned into foreplay was so romantic! While Nate was quite closed off and rude at first, I loved how he began to care about Summer immediately after he saw that she needed some help. He also had his funny moments and the scenes where he got jealous but couldn't express it well were so comical. Summer was a smart, ambitious and witty girl but I felt like she was a pushover when it came to her family. Also when the OM suddenly barged into the story, I did not like it tbh because I felt like Summer should've cut off contact with him sooner if she knew that she didn't love him at all. Other than this, nothing about the plot bothered me. The side characters were great and the flow of the story was pretty good and I was engaged from start to the finish. The epilogue was also satisfying and I couldn't get enough of Nate & Summer together! Overall, it was a cute and light-hearted read with some amazing chemistry and witty banter and if you want to enjoy a fun romantic comedy which is fast paced, this might just be the right pick for you!

This book came out february 15th and I feel so guilty finishing it today but oh well you can’t force it.
This book was funny, agonisingly angsty, romantic, lovely and spicy (the couple of scenes present). Our hero, Nate, was wonderful in all aspects, I loved him so much: his silences, his wood-cutting lol, his tenderness and his determination. Nathaniel is the reclusive author of a trilogy (well, 2/3 of it) who’s hidden from the world in his quaint cottage in a small town in North England and Summer is a junior development editor who’s been sent to help him write the third book of his acclaimed science fiction trilogy. Summer was his ray of sunshine in the snowy town, and he was the push she needed to change her life and apparently cause you know, this is a romance, fall in love. 😍
The only thing that I didn’t really liked was the fact that Summer was extremely insicure about his future (and I get it, I’m the queen of Insecurity) and she had Nate right in front of her but her thoughts kept drifting to her family and what would made them happy… it was a bit hard reading about it… I was like "wake up, decide what's best for you!" But overall it was really nice and I would recommend it if you like your books more angsty!

Fighting Words is the perfect title for this book!!! It's truly a double entendre too.

The blurb is all you need to know about this story going. And being that we're all readers, this story is so relatable and realistic.

The way this story builds up, the angst and the banter between Summer and Nate was amazing! My cheeks from smiling and laughing so much. I truly enjoyed how they interacted and things happened naturally between them.

I really enjoyed the overall plot of this story and how things played out. Definitely another great book from R.S. Grey.

This was super disappointing. The blurb was super misleading. There was way too much stuff with the boyfriend. I’d write a longer rating review about how much that all drove me crazy but honestly I just don’t care too. Simply, the first half was boring and tedious. The whole first 100 pages of the book took place over like a day and a half. The middle-ish had entirely too much of this boyfriend stuff. The ending was cute but I was just so already over it by that point.

Pick this up when you want something light but with a hint of banter. This book was refreshing for me as it was so much better than the books I had read this year! It has no break-up drama, it's a sweet romance. Books without epilogues feel abrupt to me and this one felt like that too!!

Tropes: small town, grumpy sunshine, “coworkers”, rom com, forced proximity, hate to love, slow burn

Fighting Words is going down as one of my favorite books by R.S. Grey. I loved this book!

Fighting Words follows a young, relatively new editor who gets tasked with trying to get a famous author to complete the last book in his trilogy. It’s a last ditch effort sending Summer there, and little does she know she’s going to be in a real battle trying to get Nathaniel, aka Nate, to finish this book.

Summer is such a fun character! She’s sweet, funny, shy, determined. I couldn’t help but fall in love with her character. I think she was the perfect type of character for this plot. Reading through her POV was pure fun and I flew through them. She’s dealt with her family and on again-off again boyfriend constantly telling her what she’s doing wrong and how she needs to focus on getting her life together. When she gets assigned to go to England to help world famous author Nathaniel complete his very anticipated trilogy, she’s determined to be different than the unsuccessful editors before her. What she doesn’t expect is to see the soft side of Nate, form feelings she’s never felt before, and start feeling like the small town is where she belongs.

Nathanial “Nate” is a well known author of a popular sci-fi series, but hasn’t been able to get the third and final book out. To the rest of the world it might seem like he’s being lazy, but the more you read about his character, the more you understand his writers block and fears. All Nate wants to do is continue to live secluded in the freezing winters in his comfy cabin and ignore the pressure from his fans and publisher. When a young, beautiful woman shows up to his front door claiming to be yet another editor there to help him, he’s ready to throw her out in the snow. Instead he lets her stay the night, which then progresses to more night. While he was determined not to let anyone bother him about his unwritten book to complete his series, this new bubbly editor makes it hard to fight back.

I loved reading this book and experiencing all the conflicting emotions these characters have and their small steps towards falling for one another.

The only reason I didn’t rate it 5 stars is because I felt like the epilogue came a chapter too soon and was very rushed. Overall, I loved reading this book and couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommend it for those looking for a quick, fun read.

Thank you for the e-arc!

the holiday vibes

This book IMMEDIATELY reminded me of the holiday with the quintessential English cottage, the editor, the stacks of books lining every room. The was R S depicts her worlds makes it easy to envision.

This book is about Summer, a happy go lucky newly minted editor wanting to find her place in the world of books despite her family’s insistence she go into the medical field. With their expectations riding on her back she flies to England to try and help a fantasy author who has been trapped in a terrible case of writers block.

Nate is a surly fantasy writer with the expectations of the world riding on his shoulders. He doesn’t want to let his fans down, but doesn’t know if we can write the final book in his long awaited trilogy. He has lived in isolation in his cottage, save for a feral cat named Cat, the neighbors sheepdog named Dog, and a wondering sheep named, you guessed it, Sheep. When Summer arrives on his doorstep he initially slams it in her face like all the previous editors the publisher has sent before. But there is something about Summer’s positivity that draws him in.

You will love this book if you enjoy grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, slow burn (kind of), and beautifully written romance.

I don’t even know what the author was trying to attempt here, but if her goal was to make me despise the leading female character and think she was an atrocious person and selfish bitch, she succeeded. I haven’t disliked a fmc this much in years.

This is just another ridiculously badly written love triangle, but instead the author tries to big brain it and tries to beat it over our heads why she had to string one of the men along for years and why she had to be a selfish and despicable person. Like please, your readers aren’t that stupid. Oh and she also tried to insinuate people who like the person in the triangle who doesn’t get picked is stupid. I guess this author enjoys insulting her readers too.

Just so you know the fmc led the man on until 71% in the book. I almost dnf because of how gross the fmc was. I stuck it out but I was hoping for a bus or train to take out the fmc. I typically enjoy this author but this one was a massive miss.

Also, the other lead was boring and I genuinely wished the fmc ended up single and alone because it’s what she deserved.

R.S. Grey never fails to deliver a good story with insane chemistry between two characters.

Fighting Words is great story with good pacing in the storyline. I really enjoyed the moments between Nate and Summer because of how different they are but they simply fit just right. Both characters were intriguing to me and I liked getting to know them whenever I would get to their pov. The chemistry and the connection they have between them is written so well. It’s one of my favorite aspects about the book and it really has you rooting for them through it all.

I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy some grumpysunshine vibes and love banter. This book also has great characters and fun moments to enjoy!

I was so excited to receive an ARC for Fighting Words! RS Grey is one of my comfort read authors and this book was no exception!
The story follows our FMC Summer, a new developmental editor, as she travels to England to meet with author Nathaniel to try and help him with the next book in his best-selling series. She gets more than she bargained for once she gets there and realizes the job is not as cut and dry as she was hoping it would be.
Summer is kind, smart, straight forward and determined to finish what she was tasked with even when Nathaniel fights her every step of the way. As the book progresses, both our MC’s open up and start to learn about each other leading to the start of a sweet relationship. The romance had all the elements I love about this genre; depth, emotion, funny moments and a slow-burn love that led to a climax with all the best spicy fireworks!
This was a great romance to pick up when you want the perfect balance of sweetness, angst, and fun banter between our MC’s plus additional side characters that add a little extra love to the story!
I also have to mention one of my favorite things about this book… The setting, it takes place near Sedbergh, England which is known as a “Book Town” full of little book shops. It sounds beautiful and amazing and has officially been added to my world travel Bucket List all thanks to this book!
I am so grateful I was able to read this before it released and I highly recommend it!

Charming and fun story!

I really enjoyed this book. The story of Summer going to England to work with this recluse author, struggling with writer's block, was bound to create some entertaining moments. Nathaniel was everything I expected him to be. He was a loner, rough around the edges and rude. Summer was so optimistic about helping him, which of course, didn't go her way. I loved every minute of their banter and the attraction that was building. They were both struggling to get through rough waters, and they helped each other find their way through it. I loved this charming English village that Summer was stuck in and how she fell in love with it as well. This story was a lot of fun to read.
