The Doodle Knit Directory: 200 Mix & Match Motifs and Patterns for Knitted Accessories

Rate this book
A practical guide to 'doodling' with knitted colorwork designs. Readers can choose their favorite charts from the 200 different designs and then mix and match them to create unique projects.

They can then combine them in any way they like, repeat their favorite designs, change the colorways and generally have fun 'doodling' with them. All of the charts work together so readers can have lots of fun exploring the endless options and making up their own combinations, playing with colors, adding in plain rows in between the charted rows and generally getting creative.

There are instructions for how to use the charts across all the patterns - they all have the same stitch count and work across each of the 9 projects which include a range of accessories such as cowls, scarves, hats and mittens.

Doodle knitting is all about having fun with pattern - choose your favorite motifs and create your own combinations. The 9 patterns have specific suggestions for pattern combinations but author, Jamie Lomax, explains how to modify all the projects to create your own versions.

The patterns only combine two colors on each row so it's suitable for beginners to colorwork and because it's done on a small scale it's a great way for absolute beginners to try their hand at colorwork, but the large selection of patterns and designs means that more advanced knitters will have plenty to inspire them.

The 200 designs are presented seasonally and there are a wide range of motifs including everything from flowers, leaves and mushrooms through to squirrels, sheep and other birds and animals. As well as the motifs there are abstract designs that can be interspersed to break up the patterns and create interest so you can have endless doodling fun.

Thanks to Edelweiss and the Editor. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

The format of this ARC is atrocious, so it was really hard to read the part with text in it, but I guess they would work on it and make it readable in the final edition.
I loved that we had an introduction to colorwork and the topics treated were interesting (and from what I gleaned they were also well-treated, but don't quote me on this).
That said, I love Jamie Lomax's patterns! Her doodles are so beautiful and her works are always eye-catching, so I was excited to see what this book was holding for us... and I am in love!
The graphs are all beautiful, and we have not only those but the samples to see how the final knitted piece should look. And there are so many of them!
It is a great book and I'd love to buy a physical copy for reference because it is beautiful! And it's not that we have a ton of doodles graphs but we also have some patterns for using them! Fantastic!

This is a nice book. Big easy to read charts and several pattern "recipes" (cowls, scarf, hat, socks and variations there of.) Lots of geometric designs, a cute animal or two. If you really want her best charts you'll have to purchase the Doodle Card Decks, as those designs aren't in the book (which is super disappointing). If you're interested in fair isle / colorwork / strand knitting this is a good place start. This *is not* a book for beginners, it expects that the reader has some basic knowledge / skill of how to knit.

What a terrific resource for colour work! Grateful to have received a copy for Christmas and also for the access to a digital copy through our library’s Hoopla service. Read cover to cover as she really does do a great job of explaining doodle knitting and how best to use different patterns for its advantage. Have already made my first hat and love the result. The book has the best collection of botanical colour work options (for my taste) all in one volume.

I also really appreciated her personal story and know now to seek her out for more tips and knitting suggestions.

I think there are two very broad categories of knitters. Those who like to have a pattern/rules/guide/gauge swatch for anything they do, and those who are happy to just go for it and have an adventure, dive in, make changes and adjustments to patterns as they go or right from the start. This is a book and concept that I think works for everyone - it has deep structure and total freedom. It's a huge series of mini colorwork charts, each just a few rows long, that can be combined in any order, put together, made with any yarn weight into one of the included patterns (scarf, cowl, hat, socks, mittens, etc), or put into any pattern you please. There is information on choosing colors and contrast, yarn management, different colorwork techniques, as well as tips for combining the charts together and adapting them (for example, rotating, mirroring, adding or removing stitches or colors, etc).

The patterns themselves - they are cute!. There is a set of "basic" geometric looking designs and then they are organized by "season" into different themes - there are animals, flowers and plants, all sorts of little pictures. You are telling me I can make something with cats, teapots, yarn, and snowflakes?? Something with a whole rainbow of different types of flowers and a snail? add sheep to anything? SOCKS WITH SOCKS ON THEM?? The possibilites are endless and the author also has pdfs of more designs on her website, including a garden theme and DINOSAURS.

Confession: I am not even a colorwork knitter yet. But, I have seen Jamie Lomax's designs on instagram for a long time, and I decided to buy her book anyway because I want to learn more about colorwork knitting and I thought this would be a good guide and have good inspiration. It really is a fantastic resource. Flipping through it, I kept thinking to myself, "That's it, I'm learning colorwork in 2025!"

l enjoyed reading through this book with its assortment of different patterns and projects.
The introduction from the author was interesting and personal, and she also told you how this was not a traditional book.
she also goes through the Tools and materials. A must-read as it enables you to acquire items you might not already have. She also talks about measurements you need to take before starting the project.
You learn how to plan, choose charts and patterns, choose yarn and colours, and how to work with charts.
The author then gives you a blank chart to trace to enable you to copy the patterns without destroying the book.
She also takes you through how to adapt your charts, design your own, and modify other patterns.
She then gives you different charts to work from before starting the projects in the book.
They consist of a Cowl, Scarf, Hat, and many more. In fact, you get 9 projects to make.
Towards the end of the book, she talks about General Techniques, which l think should have been nearer the front.
An enjoyable book to review and l would say more for a knitter who has knitted before and not a beginner.
Well worth getting if you wish to make more difficult projects and one's that are more fun to knit than just garter stitch!

I am a huge fan of Jamie Lomax and her Doodle knitting charts. When I saw that she was releasing a book I was so excited for her and for me. And I absolutely loved this book. The charts, the detailed instructions, the choice of yarns to use and all of the fabulous ways I could use the charts to make my own knitting designs. She even includes patterns for cowls, socks, headbands, and mittens to use with the charts, and each design is so darn cute. Her method is so well thought out and so very clever. What a great introduction to color work, and she has made it all so easy and so addictive.

If you don’t follow her on social media you need to check her out. Each new Doodle gets better and better. The themes are so fun and her test knitters make the most amazing things. She makes the knitting world a better, more interesting and enjoyable place.

I highly recommend this book to knitters, new and old. Get on the Doodle train, I hope you’ll love it as much as I do!

Thanks to Edelweiss for a copy of this Arc. All opinions are my own

It's no wonder this book is so popular! I love the appeal of making an accessory or garment that is totally unique to you by combining stripes of colorwork motifs. This book is so versatile to all knitters; no matter what you love making most, you can insert any of the motifs into what you're making. There are 200 beautiful motifs to choose from, organized by seasons. There's also sections on choosing colors and motifs, modifying patterns to add the motifs, colorwork tips, and pattern "recipes" to make your own unique doodle knit. I think this book could give new inspiration to knitters and help bring extra joy to knitting colorwork.

Thank you, David & Charles Publishing, for the review copy!

The book is well written. Jamie explains the process of Doodle knitting in an easy to follow and understandable way. I loved the inclusion of so many pattern styles that are suitable for doodling. A scarf or a cowl a sock or mitts, the choices are truly endless. The number of doodle charts is expansive. It will take while before I run out of ideas. At the ending the index of techniques is going to be a plus for every knitter

Nice selection of basic patterns and modern mini colour work charts, looking forward to trying some out.
What is disappointing is that all the pattern charts are worked bottom up, the pattern design for socks is cuff down, and the instructions say to work the pattern charts top down, but the sample socks seem to look like the pattern is the wrong way up.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, I’m considering adding it to my knitting library. Definitely not for beginner knitters, but if you’re on the fence about colorwork, this book is a good starting spot.

Si compro un libro para aprender una técnica, este es el tipo de libro que quiero. Con ideas e indicaciones para que aprendas, hagas la técnica tuya y puedas usarla a tu manera, y no simplemente un paso a paso sin más.

Lots of neat pattern ideas but what I really enjoyed was the way the author encourages you to try your own thing. I like mixing stuff up and having a book tell me that I shouldn’t follow a pattern and should do what felt right was wonderful. Very cute book, highly recommend

Jamie Lomax is known in the knitting community for her "Doodle Knits" (she is Pacific Knit Co in that space). These are infinitely variable charted patterns that you can mix and match to create your own colourwork designs for cowls and hats, scarves and socks. Now, she's put it all into a book, and what a book it is.

This is one to grab for library shelves and makerspaces. It has great photos and diagrams and tons of explanatory text on how to put the motifs together. You can think of it like a recipe with more variations than you can imagine. Beginners can start with one of the pre-created patterns, and knit it exactly as designed. As knitters become more adventurous, they can substitute different designs, play around with colour, figure out where they want different motifs to occur. Patterns are included for cowls, hats, socks, mittens and more, and then there are more seasonally themed doodles than you can wrap your head around - popsicles to French presses, acorns to animals. This is one that could keep a knitter going to the end of their stash!

The technical material here is also excellent - clearly explained and well-laid out. I am totally grabbing this one to go along with my Andrea Rangel Alterknit collections. thanks to David and Charles and Edelweiss for the e-arc.
