Rate this book
Paola Dante is a driven project manager. Long ago she made a decision that matters of the heart were inherently messy and should be kept at arm’s distance. But her husband had surprised her; she had no resistance against Daniel. Now she sees herself as a survivor who has successfully moved on from the traumatic events and terrible truth surrounding her husband’s sudden disappearance years before. An unlikely and ill-equipped mother, she stands alone between their adopted daughter Simone and a criminal kingpin. To save her daughter − and herself − once and for all, Paola will face her every fear, her every mistake, and the past she thought she’d finally processed and left behind.

How far would you go for love?

Paola Dante is a project manager for a multinational, information technology corporation. She is an efficient, independent woman and expects the highest standards from all those around her… that is all except Daniel, her wayward husband.

Daniel does a mysterious disappearing act and Paola is forced to forget him and move on with her own life. On the surface, it appears that she has…

Paola’s adopted daughter, Simone, pushes against every boundary Paola has erected to protect herself from the world. Their lives are pretty mundane, or so it seems. But not everything is as it seems. A criminal kingpin is after the pretty teenager and sooner or later he’ll tighten the noose. Nothing is the way it seems and strangers could turn out to be stalkers from the underworld.

Paola vows to protect her daughter at any cost, but her past comes back to haunt her and she fears the dark forces at play. Secrets and lies surround their lives at every turn. Is there anyone she can truly trust?

Roland’s lyrical writing enticed me into this world of subterfuge. Paolo’s complicated, but deeply loving relationship, with the wily Simone, left me breathless at times.

Well-developed, fascinating characters, stayed with me for weeks after finishing the story, as did Roxy’s sudden disappearance into the terrifying underworld.

Double lives, lived in plain sight, are brought to life by Roland’s thrilling, fast-paced and steady reveal of mysteries.

Will the final mystery be revealed in number three of this trilogy? I have my fingers crossed!

On the face of it, Paola Dante is like many other modern working mothers. She has a demanding job and a temperamental teenager. But that’s where the similarity ends. Paola’s husband, Daniel has disappeared, but rather than bristle about his abandonment and somewhat dubious dealings, she yearns for him. However, her concern about the well being of their adopted 14-year-old daughter, Simone takes priority. It has to – Simone’s childhood wasn’t an average one. And, as if the girl hasn’t already been through enough, at least one organisation is after her. Fortunately for Paulo, she has a cabal to call on for backup when the going gets tougher – and it does. But can she trust everyone who appears to be on her side? And will Paulo’s sometimes-unconventional parenting decisions be enough to protect Simone?

The second in Consuelo Roland’s Limbo Trilogy (Lady Limbo came first), Wolf Trap is an engaging work of literary suspense with an intricate plot that fixed my attention throughout. But, rather than being a dyed-in-the-wool thriller, the book is about (kind of) normal people with abnormal lives who are compelled to do extraordinary things, and Roland’s characters fascinated me with their complexity. They made me wonder why we love who we do even when they give us every reason to stop doing so. They made me ask what it is that drives us to protect family above all else.

While, as is the case with most series, it’s expedient to have read Lady Limbo before beginning Wolf Trap, it’s not essential. The backstory unravels smoothly and it’s unlikely that those readers who are meeting Paola, Daniel, Simone and the book’s many other characters for the first time will be confused.

Wolf Trap deals with the dark underworld of abduction, human trafficking and paedophilia, and religious cults. Some of it is brutally real. When Simone’s 15-year-old friend disappears, Roland writes, ‘Roxy acquired ghost status, receding further and further from the newspaper front pages. The mainstream media had already moved on. She had vanished twice, the second time into an anonymous statistic.’

But, despite the hard-hitting subject matter, the author's vivid style and dry wit and the pace of the novel ensure that it is an exciting, enjoyable read. Her general observations of life are keen. For example, ‘That’s the thing,’ Monica said. ‘It’s the loss of innocence that really hurts, not the loss of virginity per se. That’s just physical.’

I particularly enjoyed the author’s wry insights about parenting a teenager. Although there’s nothing typical about her daughter and protagonist/narrator, Paola’s experience of motherhood, if you’ve raised a teenager, you’ll almost certainly find yourself nodding your head in recognition.

In a nutshell, Wolf Trap is a beautifully crafted, suspenseful novel with heart – and an ending that’ll have you wondering how soon the final book of the trilogy will be available.

I loved the second book in the Trilogy as much as the First; Lady Limbo, and it was just as difficult to put down. Can’t wait for the third!

Wolf Trap, the second book in the Limbo Trilogy, continues the saga of star-crossed lovers Paola Dante and Daniel de Luc, and Paola’s adopted daughter Simone. Having rescued Simone from a porn empire before the auction of her virginity two years previously, Paola must be vigilant – the evil Sarrazins may strike at any time. When Simone’s friend Roxy is kidnapped, Paola and Simone must face their past and walk “into the mouth of the wolf”…
If Lady Limbo was about love and destiny, Wolf Trap is more about responsibility – specifically parental responsibility. Overcoming victimhood is another strong theme in this literary suspense that morphs into a high-stakes thriller. Although the question of Daniel’s disappearance will likely only be resolved in the third book in the trilogy, Wolf Trap will satisfy readers who want to see Paola regain her mojo. The novel is a rollicking blend of crime fiction, romance and self-conscious postmodernism (spot the literary references throughout) – a unique combination that sets Roland apart in South African fiction.
