I liked this book for a number of reasons. One, I like to refer back to it because I am reading through a several volume encyclopedia about art and artists. I find that I am recognizing more artists each time I read through it, which gives their art greater significance.

This is a small book that is big with information. Each artist has a page description and representative painting, although interestingly, not always the most famous painting associated with him or her. The editors seemed to be endeavoring to show lessor known works of each artist.

The book lists artists according to alphabetical order rather than a chronological time line. This makes some interesting comparisons as an artist from the Gothic era is on one page and a Modern Expressionist painter is on the adjoining page, allowing the viewer to view works from both painters simultaneously.

And perhaps the book is a little heavy on the twentieth century artist and slightly light on the more traditional artist. Being a big fan of modern art I did not find this a detraction, but if someone is more of a fan of art of previous centuries they might take that into consideration. However, there is no shortage of art work from any era.
