Snowmelt to Roots: a collection of poetry

Rate this book
s n o w m e l t t o r o o t s | MORNING MIDDAY EVENING LOVE SONGS

an initial offering of one hundred poems from singer-songwriter, Zach Winters, written over a span from autumn to spring. like his music, there are themes of love, longing and spirituality, but the poetry is rooted more firmly in the tangible—a hike to Tamolitch Pool, family rituals, beauty in the simple and in the profound, afternoon Earl Grey, prayers, marriage with its kisses and dishes, and a light peppering of criticisms that cut both ways. Snowmelt to Roots is common and vulnerable, but always invitational, with an eye upstream.

I’ve been carrying these beauties along on car rides and around the house for months (and his music for about a decade). Seering, tender, radiant gems.

No heart have I found that so mirrors my own (or at least what I assume/hope to be my own) in their art.
This is the first collection of poetry I have read in full, and what a safe person to entrust with such a personal milestone.

Within you will encounter whimsy, cheek, hilarity, profundity, goodness, truth, and beauty. Dig deep, drink deeper. ✨

I discovered Zach Winters' music a year or so ago and have come to really love it. He has a talent for writing lyrics full of truth and beauty without being cheesy or pushy, all with beautiful instrumentation. So when I saw he had released a book of poetry, I was excited to see how he compared as a poet. I'm not at all an expert discerner of what constitutes good poetry, but I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. His poems are full of the same subtle truth and beauty as his songs. Some of my favorites were "cup/path/song/house," "1 Americans 20:23," "date with Moj," and "to thank the grapes."

I’m not a big poetry reader, but I love music and I love Zach Winters’ music especially. His lyrics always seemed close to poetry to me. He hits on the ups and downs of faith, family, friendship, life, art—every poem felt relatable to me. There are several I want to memorize or frame or just look at every now and then. Such a great collection.

I’ve loved Zach’s music since I discovered him in 2018-19 maybe? His music has always helped me open up to what is going on inside me and deepen my faith. This poetry was no exception. I have so many dog eared pages, underlined sentences and notes throughout. I know there are few poems I’m going to go back to. For someone who doesn’t read a lot of poetry, this captivated me. The love section really opened me up the most. Zach doesn’t disappoint in music or in this collection. I hope there will be another collection in the future.

Naturally someone as gifted at songwriting as Zach Winters makes an excellent poet. A perfect blend of melancholy, merriment, and occasional sass about the state of the world — I must recommend reading this collection of poems as a nightly ritual with a cup of tea in hand. I didn’t want it to end, but I am looking forward to reading it again and again.
