Alexa Thyme: Breaking Through

Rate this book
In a world filled with monsters and supernatural entities, the idea of schools and extracurricular activities being used to identify candidates worthy of advancing was a given. Schools and extracurricular activities have been used as a way to provide early advantages for the children who strive to work harder and prove themselves from an early age.

In this world, where academic success could literally mean the difference between life and death, many students develop emotional baggage.

Fortunately for Alexa, she does not suffer from the problems that plague most of her peers.

Gifted with an intelligent mind to start, she realized early on that applying herself to both her academic and sports competitions was the number one way to succeed in this world. How can she do it? Shuffle studying, school work, and sports practice, all while being a teenager? The answer is simple, she has no emotions.

The only time she truly feels anything, is when she increases her attributes. With that as her sole guiding purpose in life, she is determined to advance and grow her attributes as much as possible. What can a girl do in a supernatural world where the only thing holding her back, is how hard she is willing to work?

The answer, anything she wants.

How can a girl with no emotions learn to function as an ordinary student, at least for appearances sake? Simple, biting sarcasm and deadpan responses.

This is the story of Alexa Thyme, a girl unwilling to bend to a world she can't relate to.

Needs way more "show don't tell". ()

The Story does not know what it wants to be. Dungeon delving, superheroes, secret Identities (that are like not secret at all), LitRPG with a System, Ascension and System Apocalypse/Integration all incoherently mashed together.

Way too much "MC is so awsome bla".

Continuation errors. (Alexa has no Smartphone, but a Smartwatch. A few chapters later she saves numbers of others to her Smartphone. Stuff like that.)

Poor feeling of Time.

"We don't tolerate bullying." Well yeah you do... activly saying that "I'm always watching... So it does not go too far...". Like can anyone in this book not be useless and contradicting themselves?

People don't talk to each other saying male and female all the time. It gets wierd having people constantly described as "pretty female" etc.

It was not boring, so I finished it and the last chapter makes the continuation interesting. Don't know if I find the motivation for the next one tho. Needs a round of editing to streamline the story and give it a better flow.

Wow. Great read

It's been a long time since I read a truly exceptional book... this book gave me that elusive happy feeling I'm chasing every time I pick up a new book. It was interesting, fun magic system, believable and likeable characters, cool setting. Loved this book

If you didn't see the Goodreads marking for some reason: this contains spoilers.

I rarely lost interest in a book that quickly after liking it well enough In the beginning. I had fun at the start, not high literature but an enjoyable read. Later I found her a bit too sueish between the stunt she pulled with the taboo and the whole bullying thing.

I didn't mind yet when she easily (in days) gets max tier Magic in multiple disciplines with her cheat class (which btw is only slotted and not fully activated yet) making her super special since apparently she might be the only max healer. I don't fundamentally mind opness if the world doesn't warp too much to show of their awesomeness.

Basically the most common reason I find things sueish is when I think showing of the MC trumps internal logic of events. First we hear about a taboo nobody breaks because it causes a curse which makes you die after entering the dungeon again, some of earth strongest have died to it. Immediately after the reader hears about it she breaks the taboo and rushes into the dungeon because she thinks it will just be a continuation of the trials of ascension and of course she does it easily. That is one thing if it happens after careful research and prep, like this it feels like MC acting in profoundly stupid ways because the story wants to show of how awesome she is.

Next is the bullying plotline, bullies who apparently bully very openly in front of witnesses including mental power abuse and put it online on an easily accessible website as videos. She reacts with grievous physical harm also on video. She cuts one guys limbs of, she reattaches them but how the hell doesn't police get involved? She is even the obvious aggressor in the situation and he only argued verbally so no self defense claim. This feels poorly like a lazy plot to show of MCs awesomeness

I still intended to finish it at that point, I was three quarters in when I got annoyed. But then there is her easily aquired squad of loyal, hot werewolf girls. After being a bit annoyed about her the speech from a werewolf girl about being saved thrice just made me groan and suddenly removed all motivation to finish the book.

Starts off great…

The story started off great and then drove off a cliff. It had a great hook, I was enjoying the characters and the story was good. A few minor grips but nothing note worthy. They the MC starts ‘consult dating’ a girl. I made it about 70% of the way into the story before the author ruined it for me.

I’m not into girl on girl relationships. Even if you are the author should note this as a content warning or what to expect in the book description. His will help prevent readers like me from the disappointment and poor reviews and help your audience find what interests them.

I only read 70% so this budding ‘relationship’ might not actually go anywhere, but I’m sick of seeing stuff like this thrown into books or movies and TV shows and ruin a good story. Marvel has lost millions of dollars trying to shove their agenda down peoples throats. Maybe take that as a sign that it isn’t want people want, tho if you really are invested in some agenda feel free to write it anyway, just label it so your audience can find it and the rest of us can void waisting out time. Thanks.

Word choices

To preface what I'm going to say here, I like this book it was a pretty fun read, but there a fair few things that stand out in a rather glaring manner.

First of all, the protagonist, she's sassy, driven and interesting to follow, if a little angsty, but her entire character is based on the Alexithymia she's supposed to have, a mental disorder which is entirely misrepresented in the book, something a quick Google search will tell you immediately. It shows a lack of research on the authors side that I worry might cause even more misunderstandings later on.

And while that's it's own concern there are countless other small oddities, the use of the word "female" is unfortunate considering the social spaces it's commonly used and can easily bring discomfort to readers like me. Many paragraphs and lines are oddly structured as well and there is a propensity for exposition about the characters that cheats the audience out of natural opportunities to learn about them.

Now, with all that being said, none of these issues are deal-breakers to me and things like the fight scenes and sarcastic comebacks are really quite fun, but it leads to a fluctuating experience that might not be for everyone. I enjoyed it, but read at your own discretion.

A 16 yr old sociopathic prodigy with emotional issues does a lot of dungeon diving and becomes even more powerful while building a harem of women.

This book started out okay but I really wish someone had told me it was gonna be yet another male-written FF litrpg. That wasn't even the only reason i gave up on it though. As far as the rest of the story goes, there is too much telling and not enough actual showing, and the progression is ridiculous! Alexa never really struggles and is automatically the best at EVERYTHING she does. Progression comes so easy to her that all she has to do is 1 level in a dungeon 10x and she's suddenly an expert with the "max" level of power in 3 brand new magics (which apparently makes her the most powerful magic user in the country?).

When she started going to a new high school i thought finally! Maybe there will be some struggling here, but nope. She is, for some reason, real worried about being bullied, despite the fact that she's always been the most powerfullest and smartest person ever...but it takes about 10 seconds for her to cow the entire school. Everyone is real impressed with her looks and power, and it's not long before she has a literal army of beautiful women following her around and marching to her orders.

Semi-standard LitRPG: People can obtain skills, attributes, and classes. People can go into dungeons to improve all of the above, and get rewards. There is a System for managing the rewards and improvements. People with exception skills, attributes, and classes can become super heroes.

Some good twists: The system has been subverted, and people who think they are running dungeons and making tactical decisions about NPCs are actually taking sides between factions that mean to take over our world.

An oddly-engaging character: Alexa Thyme is interesting, despite her socially-crippling lack of affect. Her extreme competence keeps her social interactions on the side of comedy. (She suffers from alexithymia, meaning that she has emotions, but does not know how to interact with them.)

Good story telling, weak plotting: As is often the case in LitRPG, much of the word count is spent defeating dungeons and monsters (and, in the real world, rivals and plotters). The defeats are entertaining, but tend to crowd out the larger story.

Weak proofreading, or perhaps none. To the point of distracting the reader from the story, frequently.

Out Frigging Standing

I'm just going to give this book a quick review because I have to go read the next one NOW. OK the main character Alexa is a refreshing change of pace character coming from an op type of story line. Normally we have to go through all kinds of emotional angst from the MC to wonder why they are put into a situation where they are put into a situation where they need power and need it now. Not with this one on no we just get hit upside the head with, (in my opinion), one of the best frigging reasons for wanting power ups!!!!! I recommend this book If for no other reason than the unique storyline and one of the best main characters I've ever enjoyed.

Very Enjoyable Dungeon Delver

Typical system like story with OP MC but done in a very enjoyable and unique way, so I will definitely be reading more of this series.

If I had any complaints about the writer, it would be an over-reliance on a kind of reverse irony. Instead of the reader knowing what is going on that the don't, the reverse was often true here, leaving me feeling lost a number of times. This was usually fine by the end of the chapter once the characters actually explained to the reader what all the characters had already figured out.

Also, whoever proofread this novel for the author for publication did a terrible job with many typos and mistakes that should have been removed before an official publication.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this book.

Certain elements were a bit off, like saying females instead of women, certain people changing behavior in order for the story to move forward, etc. Classic author things, which normally would turn me away from books.

The system is a bit light in the crunch for my preference () but I'm hoping it will change when the MC's class comes fully online.

But I enjoyed the story, the main character, and the narrator enough that I stuck it through the early bumps. Glad I did, it was a fun time.

enjoyable book, different from my normal reads, likable MC

The title intrigues me so I decided to read this book. I am glad that I did, the storyline is interesting and the protagonist lack of emotion is intriguing. Not sure that I like that aspect of the MC but the characters are well written and the story kept me reading the book until the end. Didn’t like the cliffhanger, That’s why I didn’t give it a five. star rating i will go on and read the next book. In my opinion, as I always say each book should stand on its own without cliffhangers. Good book, different from others I’ve read, enjoyable.

This is a small author and it's their first book, so I'll give some leeway.

But for an honest review, the author desperately needs to learn how to do show not tell. You don't say that the main character is smart, but you show it through their actions.

Also groupies in a story just don't work unless there's a valid reason they're getting gushed over. Usually later in the series, not the first book.

Unique book!

Fascinating book! Unique MC with a weakness/strength that I've never seen before. GameLit with a good storyline. Good editing job. There were a couple of interesting twists. I really liked the MC's stance on bullying and other misbehavior. Looking forward to the next book.

3 for me is, I personally enjoyed the book but its flaws make it hard to recommend. The author has really good ideas and certain sections were extremely well done. While I'm usually forgiving of web novels of lower quality in writing, this series was a bit too much for me. There are a lot of good pieces that just didn't come together.

This was a Fun take on an Urban Fantasy with an intriguing Protagonist. With Alexa's lack of emotions (mostly), we go on an interesting journey into growth for her. She can feel emotions in certain instances. Instances that would seem crazy to others. We go on a journey of her growth in power and relationships.

The heroine of this unusual LitRPG is unable to feel normal human emotions. Her chosen method to cope with her situation has the helpful side effect of making her one of the most powerful young women in the world. Not going to pretend the world she finds herself in is entirely consistent, but it sure is fun. Also, possible wlw slow burn romance is a bit charming.

Interesting

I didn't think I'd like an emotionless protagonist but somehow the author really made Alexa a compelling character. I hope over time and through bonds with friends and her pack she can get better at expressing herself.

Anti-elf racism

Two stars for author apparently hating elves, and sociopathic, genocidal MC happily (with her emotions "on") slaughtering thousands of them, with minimal rationalization beyond her self-interest. Eff that.

Absolutely fantastic!

I love seeing dungeon books with strong female characters! Snark is a plus, as is men who choose to be nasty getting their just desserts. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Wow! You need to read this!

Outstanding world and character building! I wasn’t sure I was going to like a book about a main character who couldn’t feel emotions, but I LOVE this book! Interesting and unique story! You’ve got to read this!!

Great Book!

This book is a great start to a series. We get to see and know the characters and a few small secrets that will most definitely have actions later. Give it a try!

3.5 rounded up. The plot, pacing, and flawed-yet-OP main character mostly make up for the writing errors.
