This book starts with a stark reminder of how cruel life can be and how dangerous the ocean really is. Maria is left a widow after her husband is swept overboard in a freak storm and if it weren’t for Jackie, she’d likely have perished too. And so the tale begins. My biggest take from this is the wrong assumption that all Philippino women married to white men are mail order brides. Here we had a dating app matching Maria to Cole. This book could have benefitted from being longer so the instalove felt more real after such a huge loss, but it was still entertaining and held back on the relationship just long enough to be believable.
Wait. So by day 10 of Maria's husband being presumed dead in a freak boating accident during a storm, the local bartender is actively trying to hook Maria up with Jackie, the boat captain who rescued her? And why is everyone so racist AND sexist against a Filipino woman? This is absurd. DNF at 50%.
This was not the book for me. I found that while the characters were diverse, there wasn’t enough time for them to truly develop. The story itself relied on cookie-cutter personalities, stereotypes, and out of place insta-love in order to rush the plot.
I believe that it's possible to write a book and plot in 170 pages that doesn't feel rushed and lazy, but this wasn't really that. It was bizarre how quickly the two main characters confessed their love for each other after Maria's husband disappeared. Also, with all the horrible racist remarks these smalltown Alaskans hurl at her, there is not a single homophobic comment? Not that I particularly wanted any, but it was strange that the fact that it was two women wasn't mentioned by anyone.
Marie came to Homer, Alaska, after meeting her husband on line. Newly pregnant she’s spending the day on the water waiting for the perfect time to tell Cole. When a sudden storm hits and he’s washed overboard she desperately calls for help. Captain Jackie is trying to get back to Homer when she answers the call and comes to her aid. The story of two strong women who desperately need a friend. A wonderful love story.
I thought with the book being so short that the romance would feel rushed, but harmony did a great job at ensuring it ran at a perfect pace while still displaying the fated love at first sight. Enjoyed this one!
This could do with another round of edits. There are some major continuity errors and the timeline seems rushed with a whole lot of development taking place in what we later learn is only a few days/weeks. Some situations seem over dramatic, and a lot of stuff like “crystal tears rained down my cheeks”.
Most of my frustration is the relationship doesn’t feel Sapphic. Maria is married to a man, she comes from a conservative culture and seems very sheltered but has zero issue/awareness that Jackie is a woman? Jackie is written in a way that the story doesn’t change at all if she were a man.
Short, cheesy, easy read. Hard to develop characters in 150 pages, especially with the subject matter, but this was... readable. I'll say as much as I didn't feel a connection to the story, I REALLY want to visit Homer Alaska now. Too much emphasis on hugging/snuggling, racism towards Maria's ethnicity, and Maria's petite frame" to the point it felt like I was reading a lot of redundant sentences.
“I find myself irresistibly pulled towards her amidst the Alaskan storm.”
This one had me crying!
It starts off a little darker than the other books I’ve read so far. With a storm that sends Maria’s husband overboard and Jackie coming to her aid.
This one was a lot more of an emotional read, and I connected a lot deeper with it. Yes their timeline of getting together was rather quick, but they fitted together and it worked.
I like how Jackie stepped up to look after Maria when no one else would, how she protected her from those who were out of line.
I loved how this book became a story of acceptance and love after a tragedy.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
“When I met her during that storm- I knew that she was the one I’d been waiting for.”
Each book in this series has been captivating - this one is no exception. The writing draws you in and you feel with the characters. Sometimes you’ll want to put one of the characters in their place, others you’ll want to just let them know you’re there to comfort.
It’s a quick read with tragedy, triumph, and new beginnings.
I received an Advance Copy and am happily leaving this review.
Jackie and Maria meet under unusual circumstances. Maria and her husband Cole are caught in a storm on their boat. Cole is washed overboard but Jackie saves Maria. The plot revolves around Jackie and Maria as they rebuild their lives after a tragedy. I recommend this book for all romance readers.
Kinda cute, but very short and fast-paced. Falling in love within days after your husband dies? I don’t buy it. I wish there was more time for the characters to truly go through what’s going on. Not bad, but not great, either.
Oh this was heartfelt and written with care. There are overtones of rascism while the small-town is dealing with grief. Captain Jackie is a wonderful character and turns the town around with love. Well done
This was a lovely fast paced book, that didn't feel rushed. It had conflicted emotions described in the book that were experienced by Maria, but it felt very authentic as it didn't dismiss what she felt, which isn't an easy thing to write (especially dealing with grief). I liked it and I would easily read it again when I'm in search for an easy and quick read that still captivates me. I look forward to more books by this author.
