The Bleakwood is a land of quarreling Barons and roaming outlaws, framed by a cursed forest full of abominations.
Wulf learns the mason's trade a world away, the Bleakwood little more than a source of legend, until a tragedy throws him at the mercy of a warlock, a prophecy, and an army of renegades.
Edmund Felgrove is a noble son fleeing his own prophecy by delving into the darkest pits of the world for silver. But that prophecy will catch him stripped of allies and near death.
General Wymar has dreamed of ending the petty squabbles of the Bleakwood's seven Barons with an army of his own. But just as he is rebuked by the land he is trying to save, a man wreathed in shadow brings him a horrible task that can make all his dreams come true.
Nick Labonté writes out of the suburban sprawl around Toronto, Canada, usually on a powder-blue typewriter he snagged for $25. His fantasy and science fiction stories have been called disturbing, disgusting, and abominable, usually by those closest to him as they flip through. When not writing, he can be found working on his lackluster marksmanship skills or getting winded after chopping a few cords of wood. Fate's Conscripts is his first novel.
Super impressive debut from Nick Labonte. His world-building is so deep, and the plot thickens with a twist of hallucination halfway through. I was gripped!
I really liked Labonte's writing style. Normally I grimace a heavy gore, but his depictions were so well-phrased that I found myself appreciating how much of a picture he was painting.
I liked the main characters a lot, and how we'd see side characters come and go and return as the book progressed. It made it difficult to guess the ending and how things would wrap. There are still a few unanswered questions, but that's the beauty of a series right? We left things with a few budding friendships, and I can't wait to see where they go especially. Excited for book 2!
If you want a fast-paced book filled with mystery and gore this is the book for you! This is the first published book from this author and his writing skills were impressive his descriptions of what was happening really helped paint a portrait of the world and its monsters. Looking forward to seeing what else this story has in store!
