Soldier, spy, assassin, bodyguard. Chance Mock is an independent contractor who can be anything you need him to be—for a price. Unsanctioned by governments and unhindered by borders or laws, he's the last resort for those who demand results at all costs.
Faced with an unknown enemy who threatens to undermine her family name, millionaire philanthropist Imogen Tolliver turns to the only man who can help her: Chance. He saved her life five years ago and now she needs him again. But she’ll have to find him first, which isn’t easy to do with a man who only exists in the shadows.
Chance has problems of his own. One of the secret organizations he’s crossed in the past has targeted him for removal.
He needs to find out which one and why before they finish the job. Chance only has one person he can trust: Tarot, a voice on the phone who is as brilliant with a computer as Chance is with a gun.
Chance Mock, the freelancer, is outmanned, outgunned, and running out of time.
He has his enemies right where he wants them.
Don't miss this vigilante action thriller from Sam Sisavath, bestselling author of the Last Storm. Find out the fate of the Freelancer in this fast-paced, adrenaline-surging thrill ride.
This gripping action thriller is perfect for fans of Lee Child, Jason Kasper, and David Archer.
The Freelancer by Sam Sisavath introduces readers to Chance Mock, a lethal and elusive independent contractor who moves through a world of spies, assassins, and shadowy deals without allegiance to any government, yet bound by his own code of survival and loyalty. When millionaire philanthropist Imogen Tolliver seeks him out for help against an unknown enemy threatening everything she holds dear, Chance must rise from the shadows that define him and confront not only his foes, but the mysteries of his own past. With one ally he trusts, Tarot, a tech‑savvy partner in his ear, Chance faces a network of hidden enemies as he fights to stay alive and protect the vulnerable in a gripping, action‑driven plot that blends suspense with visceral thrills. The story’s pacing is fast, expansive, and saturated with gunfights, strategic escapes, and high‑stakes encounters that thread through its 400 plus pages of intrigue.
I got pulled into the kinetic energy of Sisavath’s world of covert missions and lone‑wolf tactics, where Chance’s gritty resilience and near‑mythical reputation kept me riveted through every twist and turn. His interactions with Imogen and Tarot added surprising layers to what could have been a purely instrumentally violent narrative, and I found myself appreciating the balance between raw action and character nuance even when the storytelling leaned into its genre tropes with unabashed enthusiasm.
Some stretches felt so relentless that I longed for quieter moments of reflection, yet I also found that relentless drive became part of the book’s pulse and charm if you are craving breakneck adventure.
Rating: 4 out of 5 because it is a bold, explosive thriller with a compelling lead you will want to follow into the shadows again.
Chance Mock. Chance F. Mock. Chance Freaking Mott.
Whatever you call him, Chance is the man! I mean, look at Berlin! Imogen Tolliver knew about Mock, but still found it hard to reconcile the man with his reputation. Even seeing him in action, she still couldn't quite believe what her eyes told her. But a good thing for her, he really is that good! With an outfit like Oruborous on your tail, it will take Chance F--king Mott to keep her alive! I'm really looking forward to continuing the Chance Mott experience. A really great character with confidence, not arrogance. He really is that good! The action and the storyline are amazing, compelling, and unstoppable. You can't wait for it to let you catch your breath before the next gunfight, fistfight, knife fight or even a swordfight catch your attention and keep you rolling. Clenched fists and blinking eyes see the grenade rolling into your reading space and send you crashing to the floor to avoid the shrapnel. Just don't lose your place in the story! This is a darn good read!
Mercenaries, murder, and money explode into a war as one man, an independent, known as a freelancer, takes on the many mercenaries arrayed against him. The man has a truly incredible reputation but it has to be exaggerated, doesn't it? As the body count rises, those arrayed against him become more concerned, finally expanding into fear. Who is this one man army? Their worst nightmare...
I wasn't sure what this story would be like as I've never read anything by this Author. I am so thrilled to say, I hit the jackpot! I usually can tell by the first pages or first chapter whether I'll be glad I picked this one to read. I have to say it starts out right away with non stop action with the mystery, suspense and everything in between. Thank you Sam Sisavath for a fantastic story but also for having this into a series!!!
If you're into this genre of Bourne-style badassery, this ticks all the boxes.
Once you get over the ridiculous name Chance Mock, and to be fair these books are OTT and ridiculous by design, there's a decent potboiler here. Fast paced, globetrotting, with a little bit more humour than the average novel of this vein.
This is a very well written and entertaining book! I don’t want to give spoilers but I really enjoyed it! I want more of Chance Mock!!! I also love how the author paints each character! I just couldn’t put it down! And I didn’t feel like there was a dull moment at all! I didn’t want it to end! Chance Mock is one of my new favorite book characters!!!
It’s a lot different from his vampire post apocalypse series, but it’s a lot less dark…and a lot more fun. Intriguing world, plot, characters, and realism in a story about an aging hitman/problem-solver who has maybe too many enemies for his own good.
Fun read with all the action, smartass dialogue, twists and turns you'd expect from a Sisavath book. Enjoyable and kept me entertained. Looking forward to book 2.
This was a high-octane read from start to finish. I am in awe of the character development. I never thought that a cooler assassin dude than Keo would appear in a Sisavath book, but WOW! Thanks for the great read!
Superbly entertaining with strong characters, lovely plot, and nicely written prose. Enjoyable and believable. Immerse yourself in the world of Chance Mock!
I was looking to expand my list of authors and this read solidified Sam Sisavath on my list. Great read and another memorable character. Can't wait to read the next book soon to be released.
This book took me forever to read, I can’t even remember when I started it. There were 3 really good action-filled parts in the book, but other than that it DRAGGED. It seems like the book was mostly conversations about what might happen without anything actually happening.
I really enjoyed Sam Sisavath’s original ideas 4-5 years ago. This was a book I couldn’t put down. I was getting into trouble with the Missus because I wild neglect chores or stay up late reading this book. It was worth every minute.
I felt such a wide array of emotions as I read this story. Fear, excitement, love, hate. The author was able to weave an intriguing story into the many characters. Nicely done.
Action packed and fast-paced. The ending was a letdown because they want you to pick up the next book to continue the story. It was a page turner though.
