From the River to the Sea: Essays for a Free Palestine

Rate this book
In the final months of 2023, as this ebook is published, Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza. Israeli officials have repeatedly made their intentions to do so extremely clear; talking of collective punishment, mass murder, and ethnic cleansing in newspapers, at press conferences, and on television. All the while, European and American states have continued to support Israel, to claim its murderous campaign is justified self-defense, and to send weapons, troops, war boats, and spy planes. While Western governments have supported the unjustifiable, or spoken inane words of condemnation while failing to take any concrete action, millions around the world have poured into the streets to denounce their complicity, to demand a ceasefire and a free Palestine.

From the River to the Sea collects personal testimonies from within Gaza and the West Bank, along with essays and interviews that collectively provide crucial histories and analyses to help us understand how we got to the nightmarish present. They place Israel’s genocidal campaign within the longer history of settler colonialism in Palestine, and Hamas within the longer histories of Palestinian resistance and the so-called “peace process.” They explore the complex history of Palestine’s relationship to Jordan, Egypt, and the broader Middle East, the eruption of unprecedented anti-Zionist Jewish protest in the US, the alarming escalation in state repression of Palestine solidarity in Britain and Europe, and more. Taken together, the essays comprising this collection provide important grounding for the urgent discussions taking place across the Palestine solidarity movement.

With contributions from: Reda Abu Assi, Asmaa Abu Mezied, Tawfiq Abu Shomer, Khalil Abu Yahia, Dunia Aburahma, Spencer Ackerman, Hil Aked, Yousef Al-Akkad, Jamie Allinson, Hammam Alloh, Riya Al’Sanah, Soheir Asaad, Tareq Baconi, Rana Barakat, Omar Barghouti, Sara Besaiso, Ashley Bohrer, Haim Bresheeth-Zabner, Nihal El Aasar, Mohammed El-Kurd, Sai Englert, Noura Erakat, Samera Esmeir, Rebecca Ruth Gould, Toufic Haddad, Adam Hanieh, Khaled Hroub, Rashid Khalidi, Noah Kulwin, Saree Makdisi, Ghassan Najjar, Samar Saeed, Reema Saleh, Alberto Toscano, and Eyal Weizman, alongside a number of Palestinian writers published pseudonymously.

[4 stars] A collected ebook of speeches, conversations, and articles to provide context missing in mainstream media sources for acute and ongoing Israeli state violence, apartheid, and genocide. Currently being offered for free by Haymarket and Verso (https://www.haymarketbooks.org/blogs/...).

The strength of this collection is in its first and last sections, which share post-10/7 testimony from Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank, and the diaspora and offer lessons learned from organizing and direct action, respectively. I’m a strong proponent of the BDS strategy, so want to highlight the clarity and usefulness of that chapter but really everything in these sections is worth reading. While similar content is widely available on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, its compilation here is an advantage for sharing, organizing, and group study.

The middle sections are more focused on theory and analysis. I found them interesting (albeit academically dense) especially the ones by Palestinian writers and discussing suppression of pro-Palestinian speech and activism. Because Verso has a London home base, I appreciated the repeated discussions of the UK’s role in Palestinian occupation and colonization, which I think can usually be highlighted more than it often is in US-focused content. Those interested in the differences between nationalist, leftist, and Islamist movements as well as the rise and fall of Fateh and the PLO will also get a lot from these sections. As frequently happens in general Left content, I wish the gender, sexuality, and/or disability lenses had been stronger in curation.

Recommended for readers interested in-depth content on the histories of Palestinian resistance and political movements, the roots and impacts of Political Zionism, and the dynamics of support and opposition across the Levant. Though maybe not the best introductory material, it’s a good companion to Haymarket’s other free offerings (BDS, Light in Gaza, and Palestine: A Socialist Introduction).

This ebook is available for free at Verso Books (there are other free ebooks on Palestine on the website!) https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/news...

This is not new. History matters. The Nakba is ongoing.

From the River to the Sea: Essays for a Free Palestine is a collection of essays that are scholarly or testimonies of what is happening in Palestine. This was published in December 2023 and it is heart-wrenching to see some of the essays finish with a note stating the person who wrote it had been killed. If the book were to be updated today, six months later, I wonder how many more disclaimers like that would be added.

The book is divided by four parts:
- In this moment: essays by people from Palestine. They are the most readable of the bunch but definitely the most sad. It’s just regular people telling you how it is, and it’s not good. My favorite one was ‘I couldn’t bid my apartment farewell.’
- No human being can exist: academic and mostly informative essays about resistance in Palestine, Israel’s occupation, and what led Hamas to do what he did.
- The enemy trinity: academic and mostly informative essays to understand the international context.
- Not in anyone’s name: some more essays including international community and a poem by Mohammed El-Kurd.

I’m not rating this one because it was a mix of things and the academic ones were quite dry, so my rating wouldn’t give the book any justice. The essays are definitely informative and educational and included long discussions about an unfinished Nakba, journalistic malpractice, international law, and Israel’s apartheid system on Palestine.

Some bits I highlighted:
We existed before Zionist colonial invasion, we exist now even among the rubbles of humanity’s remains, we will exist when Zionism is dismantled, bit by every racist, colonial bit.

We’ve been deprived of our rights, blamed for our own suffering, and failed by the international community.

Anyone who believes in freedom needs to stand with the Palestinian people. Because today it is Palestine, but tomorrow it will be another country. This is not just about Zionism or about Palestine. This is about capitalism and colonialism. That is why we have to stay on our land and fight until our last breath. We have two choices: to give up and leave the land, or save our dignity. We choose to die standing upright.

As I write, over 17,700 Palestinians including 7,870 children have been killed, with full backing from the US, the UK and the EU, and by the time you read this, no doubt these numbers will be devastatingly out of date.

Was it because there were no more graves in Gaza
that you brought us to the beach to die?

(The publisher has made the ebook free and available for all, get yours here!)

I debated a long time with whether or not to rate this, but in the end went for it. It's from 2023 so the data and stats are out of date (and, in fact, look even worse now than they did back then), but it is still relevant in terms of sociopolitical analysis and historical context, especially in terms of Middle East geopolitics. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend it.

It's a bit too dense and academic at times (the middle section especially could have been summarised at times; a lot of the information was repeated semi-constantly) but it's overall a very valuable resource for information and public dissemination. It contains interviews, analysis, articles, essays, and a final poem that crushed me.

Some have said in the past weeks that we are seeing the reinvigoration of the global anti-war movement; some have said this is our generation’s Vietnam.

Incredibly insightful, touching and raw. A collection of essays, written by Palestinian, activists, Jews and more, containing stories about the atrocities happening at the time of publication (Dec 2023), the history of Palestine and the start of the Israeli occupation, I've learned a lot from this collection.

Many thanks to Verso Books, for being a front-runner for the movement towards a better future, and making this freely available.

I don't really have a review, except that I find this collection really important and I learnt a lot through the reality and politics surrounding the apartheid and genocide imposed by the zionist state. No freedom until Palestine is free.

Verso came through and delivered one of the most thought- provoking pieces of political nonfiction. It is an undiluted polemic treatise that sets out to inform its readers about the whole lsrael and Palestine conflict by offering the most objective framework in which one is able to make a stance about which side warrants more support than the other, it is an important exploration of political and social unrest, it is unbiased and true to life, and a run to guide for individuals who are more interested to understand the conflict without dilution, from mainstream media, l found the exploration of christozionism( hopefully this is right) a rather interesting fling, we get to see the altitudes of the lsraeli government and the rapid succession of vitriolic right wing propaganda which is racist, sexist and homophobic in it's own nature, there is a significant portion in here about this narrative where a woman asks her nephew omar about omar and omar answers with the clarity, " Rage is what you taught and rage is how we will set Palestine free" l am paraphrasing here, it is not the actual diction but this line stuck with them, what a year in the midst of a good book.

You can get this book for free https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/prod... ! Material like this should be accessible, and I am so glad there is a publishing house like Verso to make it happen.

A moving collection of stories and essays. I learned so much from this book. Below are some quotes which stood out to me.

“What caused my loss of appetite? At first, I thought it was due to losing everything and becoming homeless. But then I realized it was the absence of my two favorite plates. I can’t imagine ever adjusting to life without them. I never anticipated that the destruction of my apartment, and those of my son and daughter, would resurrect memories of my first cradle, seized by the Israeli occupier. Today, I feel closer to that first cradle than ever before.”

“What would you like your children to read about you? That you justified this oppression? Or that you stood on the side of the oppressed people? Every single action counts. Don’t forget us.”

“Unfortunately, when it comes to Palestine, obfuscation and fabrication are permissible. The passive voice is king. The commitment to truth disappears, as does due diligence. I once believed journalism to be the industry of “doing no harm” and “speaking truth to power.” But reporters all too often resemble stenographers and state secretaries, mindlessly (or intentionally) amplifying Israeli propaganda.
And their hands are bloody as hell.”

“What we are witnessing, in other words, is perhaps the first fusion of old-school colonial and genocidal violence with advanced state-of-the-art heavy weapons; a twisted amalgamation of the seventeenth century and the twenty-first”

“Israel has waged a pretty effective public relations campaign against its critics. One part of this is the attempt to criminalise the BDS movement, but the overarching theme is the association of anyone who campaigns for justice in Palestine with antisemitism.”

“We cannot take a snapshot and see how atrocious it is and say, oh, it’s hopeless. Those of us who were active in the South African anti-apartheid movement know that the darkest moment was just before apartheid collapsed.”

An informative and heartbreaking read. Published December 13th, 2023, this collection really stands out in how current it is.

It covers both the genocide that’s currently happening, as well as giving context and historical information through a combination of personal testimonies from within Gaza and the West Bank, and essays and interviews that provide the crucial histories and analyses to help understand how we got here.

This combination worked really well in my opinion. It gives the reader a more personal connection to the people of Palestine while still being able to provide the, at times, more academic-leaning information that helps us understand what is going on.

I also liked that the chapters were relatively short. It just makes it feel that bit more accessible for the average reader who might be intimidated by some of the other, more dense and/or academic, texts out there.

The whole thing just breaks my heart. This was a really good book for somebody who was beginning to dive more in-depth on Palestine. It teaches you a lot about a huge variety of subjects related to the struggle of the Palestinian people--mostly Gazans, as is topical, but also 48ers and the residents of the West Bank. And it was free! Which was very fitting. So definitely check it out.

You can get this ebook for free via Verso and I'd highly recommend getting a copy.

A difficult read emotionally but probably the best and most well-rounded I've come across in terms of being extremely current, accessibly written, and covering a wide variety of topics related to this genocide.

I read this as my first introduction to Palestine beyond social media commentary, and in that I think it succeeded.

Some essays require prior historical & geographical knowledge, but I was still able to get an amateur understanding of the situation.

Other essays share the lived experience of Palestinians in Gaza, which in my opinion is the best way to educate people who are either ignorant or conditioned to dehumanize Palestinian suffering.

The last type of essays are a call to action, a reminder of our power during powerless times.

I got this book for free from Verso as part of their mission to educate readers on the evils of the Israeli empire, and I'm grateful to them for that. Highly recommend.

This book contains 31 essays divided into 4 chapters, which comprehensively discuss the genocide currently taking place in Gaza. These essays were written by contributors from various groups such as academics, students, writers, journalists, doctors, human rights lawyers, representatives of Gaza and West Bank youth, as well as the Palestinian diaspora. Two contributors were martyred in Israeli airstrikes before this book was published.

Several essays have been published in other mass media, and are included in this book with permission. Most of the essays were written during the attacks since October 7, some essays were written before that and the content is still relevant. That means the Palestinian people are used to dealing with aggression after aggression.

There is news circulating that Israel, assisted by the United States, is trying to erase records in the mass media, including the internet, regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza, in the hope that in the next 5-10 years, information about this genocide will disappear. The two countries seem to want to wash their hands of the war crimes that have been committed.

If that happens, then this book can become a source of reference that can clearly explain the massacre that the Palestinian people are facing in 2023. The deadliest year compared to previous aggressions.

From the River to the Sea, Essays for a Free Palestine, Edited by Sai Englert, Michal Schatz, and Rosie Warren
This book is timely, hard hitting, eye opening, well researched, and absolutely crucial to our world right now. The publishers Haymarket Books and Verso Books are still giving away the ebook for free. $0 to learn things.
Ending the book with Mohammed El-Kurd’s No Moses in siege was brilliant.

The collection starts with "in this moment", a section where Palestinians give their voice to what was then happening at the early stages of the genocide (October-December 2023). It's pretty heart-rending. It then continues with three other sections with essays on resistance, colonialism, the Nakba, the complicity of Arab regimes, US complicity, and BDS. Among the latter, I would recommend "What were Hamas thinking?", "The end of colonial government", "A war without a plan", "the enemy trinity", "Israel, fascism, and the war against the Palestinian people".

This ebook was offered for free by Verso Books. Thank you, Verso, for this very interesting and timely compilation of essays about the current situation in Gaza, and the history of Palestine. The contributors reflect a great diversity of backgrounds: a pediatrician working in Gaza, a nephrologist who was killed by an Israeli airstrike, a Palestinian feminist, a political organizer, young Gazans, one of whom was also murdered by the Israelis, professors, anti-Zionist Jewish writers and academics, writers, a poet, etc.
For me, reading this book is a way to process my anger and outrage, and find new arguments, ideas and knowledge. Excellent action by Verso, and highly recommended reading.

Very informative and well rounded, this collection of essays, articles and interviews doesn't sugarcoat any of the atrocities the Palestinian people have been subjected to for decades. I wouldn't recommend this as a first approach to the subject (Verso and Haymarket have some ebooks on Palestine that are either free or on offer!), but if you already have an idea of what is happening this is a very important and powerful collection.

Dreams being crushed, lives being taken. Deconstruction, poverty, deaths, illness, starvation. Reading all these first hand experiences feels million times worst than just watching the news. Sometimes us as previliged people living in our comfortable houses fail to understand how horrific the life of Palestinians. The thought of how many of the people mentioned have died by the time i finished reading this book will never leave me. Palestinian people are just normal people, their lives could've been like me or anyone who doesn't think about being airstriked at night, but they were born in an occupied land. 🌾🫒❤️🍊🍉
