Store Of The Dead - Supermarket Workers Vs Zombies

Rate this book
Store of the Dead is the journal of Dean Moxley, a disgruntled twenty something who felt for years like he lived in the local supermarket where he worked, until the day the dead rise to feast on the living and he actually found himself living there. During the initial outbreak Dean finds himself trapped in the store alongside his colleagues, characters familiar in any supermarket; the jobsworths, the stoners and the resident hard-man. Alongside this colorful and often confrontational group of people Dean must learn to survive his new life at the end of the world, fighting the zombie menace while struggling to win the affection of the beautiful checkout girl.

The same people whose worse threat to him before the dead began to rise was to complain about him are back at the door. They don't need a basket and they don't care about Sunday Trading laws. They're no longer here to buy food from Dean and his friends, they're here to feed on them. This is one shift Dean can't clock out of, and the new customers aren't likely to obey the "Staff Only" signs on the warehouse door. This is the Store of the Dead.

This book contains both considerable amounts of violence and serious and consistent use of strong language (it wouldn't be a realistic depiction of a retail staff vs zombie punch up if it didn't). The one word that does not crop up at all is the c-word. Pretty much everything else does, and with a reasonable frequency. If you are easily offended by strong language then I don't recommend this book.

This has to be one of the best zombie books I've read in quite some time!

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

I enjoy zombie novels that have the main characters taking refuge in a building and stocking up on food and defending their little fortress. This book had that and even more! These characters are in a supermarket over in England and anyone who has ever worked in retail or at a supermarket or a grocery store can completely relate to these characters!

We have the main character Dean who is just your average guy who shows up to work and dislikes his job but does it for the paycheck. Also we have the hot co-worker who he has a thing for. Plus we have the assistant manager who takes his job way too seriously in hopes that he will get promoted, (I think everyone has had a co-worker like that at one point in their lives). And the comic relief in the form of "Topper," the resident stoner who always seems to be high.

Their customers annoy the hell out of them normally, but they are even more annoying duing the zombie apocalypse! Demanding food be given to them, that they be given access to the store because it's passed opening time and they have connections that could get the employees fired! (Lol!) However when the zombies rise and the store clerks have guns, suddenly complaining at the service desk doesn't have the same threatening power that it used to have :-)

I LOVED this book! From start to finish I couldn't put it down! Anyone who likes zombies, and reading about the zombie apocalypse will enjoy this book. Not to mention anyone who has ever worked in retail can totally relate to the characters!

A pleasant surprise!

The epitome of"never judge a book by its cover", Store of the Dead is a witty little entry into the zombie genre, taking place in the UK. I enjoyed it far more than I expected and really appreciated the dry wit of the protagonist.

Just the way I like my zombies - with a little bit of sass. I'll be looking for more from this author.
