This was a nice collection of poems from, as I understand it, students and instructors from a writer’s workshop. I took my time with each poem, reading only 2-3 poems per day, and really tried to absorb the poet’s message with each. There were a several gems in this book that made it worth getting the collection.
DON’T CRY by Kareem Hayes may just be the highlight of the book, in which a little boy battles demons at night and monsters (which could be interpreted a few ways) during the day. The poet describes the boy’s daily life as the “art of dying inside”.
WHAT THE ANTS ARE SAYING by Michael H Payne was an unsuspecting surprise. It was a fun word-play poem with graphics of ants rearrange the poem from one thing into another. Whether actual ants or a figment of the character’s imagination, it’s not entirely clear.
THE TRULY DANGEROUS LIASON by Pixie Bruner was another delightful surprise in this collection. The poet showcases the dangers (and oh the horror!) of having two poets under the same roof. Nothing is safe, everything is weaponized—through words. No one is safe when two poets are at war.
The above were the top three poems that grabbed me while reading. But it wasn’t easy to pick just three. There were many delicious and truly dark poems that made you gasp for air (LAKE BABY). If you are in the mood for macabre, you’ll most likely find it in Whispers From Beyond.
