Do you want to become the man or woman you were born to be? If so, you're in the right place. In 1997, Danny White watched his pregnant wife and oldest child die in a single-vehicle accident during a military move. He was devastated and driven to his knees, but found God to be faithful to help him continue caring for his two young children who survived. After much prayer, he continued serving on active duty. He met Nora in 1998, and she nannied his two children. Then they married...think of a 1998 version of the "Sound of Music" story where the widower married the nanny. Toward the end of his time serving as a Marine, Danny nearly threw away this amazing story by contemplating the idea of how to leave Nora and their six children without hurting anyone. Why? He was in multiple figurative prisons--insecurity on multiple levels, being a workaholic, defining himself by his uniform and Pentagon assignments, and blaming struggles in his marriage on Nora and her family. Danny slowly went through a cocoon process where God revealed his baggage as a human being, and he started to realize that he didn't know how to lead himself. Seeking help from a military chaplain, Danny and Nora went to counseling and began to recognize the non-negotiable they must be intentional in their marriage and not just hope that it would work out. Upon transitioning from the Marine Corps, he founded Lead with Liberty, LLC and began to share leadership and resiliency lessons learned to help others understand how to lead themselves. Along the way, he began to discover who he was born to be. In 2019, God called Danny to shut down Lead with Liberty, LLC and co-found Lead with Liberty Ministries with Nora. At this point, Danny now knows, in full, who he was born to be. Now they share experiential wisdom from 25+ years of marriage and rearing nine children--to encourage Christian families to endure and not quit. They speak at men's events, ladies' events, Sunday services, patriotic events, and marriage conferences. This book captures a great deal of Danny and Nora's experiential wisdom and is provided to help others along their journeys.
Wilford Daniel (Danny) White is a former quarterback and punter for the Dallas Cowboys and an American football coach in the Arena Football League. He has been the color commentator for Cowboys games on Compass Media Networks' America's Team Radio Network since the 2011 season. A graduate of Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, he didn't receive a lot of notice while being the starter at quarterback, because back then he was a better baseball prospect. Frank Kush, then the football head coach at Arizona State University, helped convinced Bobby Winkles, the school's baseball coach, to sign White to a scholarship with the provision that he would also play punter for the football team. During those early years Kush gave him a chance to improve his skills as a quarterback, which eventually would lead him to become the starter midway through his sophomore season, ending up throwing for 6 touchdowns in a game against the University of New Mexico. White went on to have a stellar career as a quarterback and punter, compiling a 33-4 record, winning 3 Fiesta Bowls, setting 7 NCAA passing records and being named All-America in 1973, when he lead the nation's second rated total offense. He finished with 6,717 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, 42 interceptions and averaged 41.7 yards per punt. Besides having his jersey retired, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the State of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame and the Arizona State University Hall of Fame. In 2000 he was named Arizona Athlete of the Century by the Arizona Republic.
Amazing book written by my former Sunday school teacher, retired U.S. Marine Danny White, who watched his pregnant wife and first born child die in a car wreck while moving from California to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. This is a faith-based book but I think anyone can read/listen to it and be filled with hope/encouragement to keep pressing on when life gets hard. Highly recommend! Only critique is I think the beautiful poetry should have all been at the end to help with the flow and theme of the rest of the book.
A friend at church who is in the military passed this book along to me as a gift. I receive lots of recommendations of books to read and do my best to read them but I have so much on my list it is hard to read every suggestion. But when someone actually gives me a book, I read it. And I am so thankful that I read "A Widower's Walk." Easily one of my favorites this year. I am reminded once again of the blessings of God and how He walks with us, even in the face of severe adversity. And I am also reminded of the plans He has for us, even when we don't see them. The story of Danny White in losing his family and working through the challenges of loss and life is truly inspiring. I highly recommend!
