The patterns in this book are absolutely adorable! I like that there are three sizes for each pattern because it increases the availability to people with wider feet. Tips for how to make your own basic colourwork designs, having neat floats, and how to determine if your colour choices have enough contrast to show the patterns nicely are also in the book.
The book is suitable for beginner colourwork sock knitters as the patterns have clear instructions.
If you are a sock knitter, this is a must have. If you are a knitter and only plan on buying one knitting book this year, choose this one. I've been knitting socks and using knitting patterns for years but nobody designs as creatively and with such clear instructions as Charlotte Stone. This book has a lot to offer for knitters of all levels and I would highly recommend it to it beginners as well.
There is a great versatility to Joyful Colorwork Socks: you can easily adapt the patterns by leaving out or adding certain parts (or modifying the heel, the ribbing etc.) and you can even use them as a template for non-colorwork socks (which I always do) so it does double as a general handbook in sock knitting in my opinion.
The book gives you all the instructions for how to knit the best socks but at the same time frees you from the having to follow rules and encourages you to make the pattern yours, however you may knit them. Charlotte really shares all her knitting secrets in a kind, funny and easily understandable way and I'm sure this will become an instant classic for many crafters around the world.
Now THIS is a knitting book that makes me smile. Every pattern is utterly unique, well thought out, and niche. There is a pattern for every single knitter in here! The patterns are organized by section: pets, garden, less-popular holidays, parties, and hobbies (think chess, camping, fashion, etc.). The colorwork charts are very clear and easy to follow, and you rarely have to catch floats! Every pattern looks lovely, interesting, and entertaining to knit.
I also love this book because Charlotte has whole sections on catching floats, yarn and color combos, how to beat second sock syndrome, and how to design your very own colorwork socks! Her wealth of knowledge is so valuable to those of us who love beautiful and interesting socks.
I knit the Birthday Cupcake socks from this book, and I loved the process so much. The colorwork was addicting and looks stunning. I can't wait to make more patterns from this book!
This book has sooo many great now sock patterns. Already looking forward to make them.
No matter if you have done hundreds of colorwork socks or you are just a beginner, I would recommend to pick up Charlotte's Joyful Colorwork Socks book. There are great instructions for colorwork beginners (my frist colorwork socks where a pattern by Charlotte) and even creative input for the experienced colorwork sock knitter, that might look to make their own custom sock charts.
The patterns are always clearly instructed and fun to knit. You will not want to stop making all the beautiful socks in the book.
What a Joyful afternoon I've had, reading through this lovely book.
The book contains tips for knitting 25 colourwork sock patterns. There are patterns for animals, holidays, hobbies, gardening and food/drink. Of course, you could use the motifs on gloves or hats...
If you've read the Charming sock book, then you'll be familiar with the way that Stone writes her patterns; clear instructions and photographs of the finished socks. There are suggestions on yarn, ways to improve your technique and they also come with instructions for different sizes.
The parrot, ladybird and daisy patterns are top of my list, at least for now!
For Instagram fans, they're are so many pictures of Ivy.
I read Charlotte Stone's first volume of colorful socks and was able to check this one out from the library. Most all of these socks are very cute, but nothing very new. I only flagged one pair for knitting up (the one with the skull motif), so that's not a very successful knitting book by my standards. The book is well organized and the charts and photos are clear. Just too boring. (Take a look at Wild Mittens and Unruly Socks by Lumi Karmitsa for something more exciting!)
I got this kindle book on sale for the price of $2.99. I did read the author's notes and recommendations and got some tips. Most of the patterns are cuff down and I liked six or seven charts, which I will use in the future but I will convert the patterns to toe up. FYI: the pictures on my kindle are not in color which makes it difficult to try and match the yarns used to find the colors in U.S. stores. Luckily, the pictures are in color on my iPad and Mac computer.
