Mary Lennox is a pale, sickly child when she goes to live with her uncle in a big, old house in the country. In the grounds, there is a garden, which has high walls all around it and no door. Mary becomes very curious about the garden but how can she get into it? And will it help her?
i used this book in my english literature class for my international students. we have been studying this book since january and we just finished it last week. we learned a lot, of course!
we have looked at the plot, themes, setting, characters and characteristics, moral values and the latest was the book review.
i always stressed on the importance of having a positive thinking no matter how hard your life is. it has power that will give impact to our lives. colin's negative perception towards life, for instance, has resulted him to be sick. but once marry convinced him that he is not going to die and there is nothing wrong with his bones, his lost spirit came back to him.
parents play a very big role in our life. somehow, they will 'shape' us into 'something'. the lack of parents' love can lead to a 'damaged' child. however, if that child is strong enough (or lucky?) like mary, that child will survive. again, it is none other than the thinking/mindset that will help the child to survive (of course it is supported by other factors!)
i agree with mrs sowerby when she said that children should be accompanied by other children. hanging around with teenagers/adults support the fast maturity of a child, but for sure that child will lose the happiness of childhood, and for me, it is not good for the child's growth.
lastly, the power of nature is very obvious in the story. it's not only for children, it goes the same for adults. very simple, if we want to run away from the hectic city and busy life, do we go to another similar city? of course not. we will find beaches, jungles, waterfall, river, to sum up, the nature.
It was a pretty good story. We saw the unkind little girl "Mary" that she was like this character because of her surroundings from people, they did not understand her! But when she moved to England and met Dickon and Colin and the secret garden it turned into a kind girl. I think Dickon is the positive character in the entire story and he is the main reason for going the story to a good and happy ending! Colin was a pessimistic child and also he turned totally from despair to hope.
1.penguin level2 2.85min 3.garden,growing,love,effort,tree,servant,lonely 4.My favorite scene is that Colin took his father in the garden which made with Mary. Colin always felt lonely and tend to think negatively but Mary encouraged him. Finally he changed his mind and then he changed his father's mind. That's why I was moved by enthusiasm of Mary and Colin. 5. This story told me that enthusiasm and consideration can be changed people's mind. I felt pity for Mary and Colin because they weren't loved by their parents. I thought love is necessary for us. I recommend this book for everyone.
4. a, She grew up to a positive, gentle girl after Mary found a secret flower garden. b. Mary was loved by nobody because she had a selfish character. However, her mind has changed since she found a secret garden. I think that it's the good scene to know a process of her growth and the change of her mind. 5. Actually, this book was the book which I chose somehow. However I think it is beautiful story as if I didn't choose this, I would regret.
4. a. Mary was a pretty child now, and she was nicer and happier. b. I like this passage is because at first Mary was very poor girl. She doesn't like people and people don't like her. However, it gradually changed.
5. I like this ending so much because it was very moving. I thought that I wanted Mary to live a happy life after this story and I'd like to see the secret garden.
Colon was a son of rich man, Mr Craven. He grew up but he had been looking down in his life. Mary and Dickon were very friendly to Colon and they became good friends. Stand on his feet lonely is too difficult to everybody, so “friend” is very very important in human life I think.
