DNF’d at 87%. (Halfway through ch 14 out of 17.)

Nothing interesting happens. 😡😤

The H/h do not interact enough since the hero is avoiding the heroine most of the time. I don’t see how she can fall in love with him at this point.

He’s also busy trying to convince a neighboring marquess to permit a railroad be constructed on his (the marquess) part of the lands, which I didn’t care to read about.

I may try one more book by this author.

I enjoyed parts of The Duke She Married but it didn’t completely pull me in. The setup with Amelia sacrificing herself for her sisters and marrying the so-called Ghoul of Greyfair was strong, and I liked the gothic atmosphere of the remote castle. Lucas had depth as a scarred hero and Amelia’s resilience was admirable. Still, the story felt predictable at times and the pacing dragged in places. The romance had some sweet and steamy moments, but I wanted more emotional intensity. Overall it was a decent read, but not one that left a lasting impression.

Since her father’s death, Lady Amelia Atwood has been left with few options and now must marry in order to help her family financially. As the middle sister, she often found herself overlooked and she has learned that allowing herself to get close to people only results in loneliness and loss. Still, she’s willing to agree to the marriage that will save her two sisters, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness.

Lucas Bennett, the Duke of Greyfair, was badly scarred by the fire that killed his wife and unborn baby and now lives quietly at his isolated seaside castle, avoiding rumors that have labeled him the Ghoul of Greyfair. Still, the improvements he’s made to his estate have left him desperate for an heir to inherit it, meaning he must find a wife and leading him to bargain with the nearly destitute Earl of Biggleswade for his daughter’s hand. Lucas’ plan is easy enough to put into motion, but when Amelia arrives, he soon realizes she’s not exactly the shy and retiring debutante he expected.

I love a good Beauty and the Beast retelling, and this book certainly fit the bill. I really liked the use of the arranged marriage trope here and I found Amelia’s search for a place to belong especially relatable. I loved that there was romance here and the excellent development of the relationship between Amelia and Lucas, but also the growth of these characters as individuals. Amelia decided enough was enough and stood up for herself and made her place in the world where she could belong and take on the role she wanted, without waiting for Lucas to catch up. For his part, Lucas embraced his wife’s strength and finally confided all in her so that he could move on from his past trauma and create a new place for himself as well. Amelia called Lucas out on his behavior when it was needed and I think her treatment of him like a real person, rather than a walking scar, was key for him growing as a person and for their relationship escalating to a deeper level. I really liked all this growth that we got, and I loved the sea swept castle setting and slightly gothic vibes that were perfect for an autumn read.

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

A heroine that was rather empathetic towards others (servants and villagers/tenants etc.) despite
being ignored/belittled more or less her entire life.

The heroine wanted to be a Duchess that helped her people and did not wait for approval from the hero, before getting things done.

The heroine was not really a doormat or weak, she was a little timid and insecure at first but had some growth in her character and realized her worth etc.

The hero cared about his tenants and wanted improve their lives, but also the estate etc.

Somewhat interesting side character.
(The heroes cousin, which the hero has rather funny banter with.)

Castle setting.

Tiny bit of a gothic vibe to the story.

➖ What I disliked:

The romantic build up and chemistry is rushed and rather unconvincing.

Too much push and pull from both characters but mainly from the hero.

Indecisive hero.

More character development was needed especially for the hero.
(More backstory etc.)

The heroine was a little bit too naive.

Predictable.

The miscommunication and misunderstandings.
(The main characters did eventually communicate and share their pasts etc. but it took a little too long.)

Somewhat jumbled/inconsistent pacing of the story.

Vague character descriptions.

I don't know if it's a writing style or what, but I always find the Heroes in Jessie Clever books as overgrown manchilds. They need someone to spread out everything and explain in simple terms. They have zero capacity to find conscience on their own. They want to find it for them. They are sometimes redeemable and sometimes not. This particular guy has more care for his horses than his bride. Although I quiet liked how besotted he was with Amelia from the first moment. In the beginning there was too much mention of his cousin Stephen than necessary..like he was the one managing the dukedom than the H, he had solutions to every problem and even presented them even before the H could think of it. As if he were the Duke more than the Duke himself. It was kinda suspicious and creepy at some point. How he never seemed to leave Lucas's side, always prompting him in decisions. In this case he was like a stubborn 5 year being told and reasoned with what to do. Really? He is a Duke but his cousin was the one guiding him on how to run an estate and how to treat his wife. It was cringey and annoying as hell.

But atleast the H wasn't an ass unnecessarily. He didn't behave like a complete jerk because of his insecurities like many tortured/scarred Heroes tend to do. The first sex scene was a disaster. This guy was too much into trauma he forgot what he was doing.
But whatever wrong he did, he never worked anything to redeem it. Everyone did everything for him. His cousin did most of the work. He was like his nanny saving his ass everytime. I was wondering who's the H here? And what was the real H doing? Wallowing in self-pity and whining about his first wife. It became annoying after sometime. He literally SLEPT instead of running after his wife, grovelling at her feet and doing everything to keep her. He was a whiny child and lazy ass.

I liked the h. Her character was unique. She was self-doubting and had confidence issues, but she was not timid or a doormat. She was brave, she took upon the role of Duchess quiet naturally and didn't back away from fear of her husband. She was hurt and confused by her husband's hot and cold behaviour but knew to take a stand for herself than sulk away in self-pity. I liked that about her.

Maybe this is 3.5 stars? I love other books by this author and while it was a sweet addition to my collection of her books, it fell a little short for me. It has a tortured Hero and a sweet h who just gets on with things when he all but ignores her. I was looking for a stronger connection, had to wait until the epilogue to find it. I thought he was weak. I look forward to learning more about the h's family, hopefully in the next book.

I finally got around to reading this book that was gifted to me. I have to say I definitely enjoyed it. The first few chapters I wasn't sure if it was for me but after their relationship grew I fell for them. I loved all the characters in this book. It gave me beauty and the beast vibes which I enjoyed. I hope to read more about the Atwood sisters or more about this coupling !!

First time reading this author and it'll likely be my last.

Thanks to heavy skimming I was able to reach nearly the end of the story but that point I was skimming so much I had missed quite a bit of detail and I truthfully didn't care.

I found the book blurb interesting but the actual story was hugely lacking. While the author clearly has a talent for writing and writing well... it wasn't good. Not for me. I felt the author put forth an immense amount of effort into detailing the scenery, the land, the castle decor and even the endless inner thoughts and monologues by the main characters more than she did the actual interactions. This book surprisingly lacked in dialogue, believe it or not. There was just far too much detail for everything BUT what was interesting and helpful to move the story along. It was endless repetition from one scene in the heroines POV to the heros POV of the exact scene. It was constant droning about the land and the greenery the heroine saw all around her. It was a lack of anything interesting being said when there was anything spoken at all.

Not to forget that both characters suffered in their own ways regarding their self worth and betrayals respectfully. But neither are addressed in a way that adds to the story. Everything was so VAGUE with the characters and their interactions that the idea that they fell in love was perfectly laughable.

It felt as if this story took place behind a sheer curtain with dim lighting for illumination where I'm left to interpret what little I can see and hear but I can never quite understand the full story or meaning behind what I've seen. It was strange.

So, this was bust for me. To put it as politely and bluntly as I can... it was boring. So very boring. Which was just so disappointing because a scarred hero such as the hero Lucas are always meant to be such fascinating characters but this author didn't do him justice.

And just to point out that the book blurb claims this book is steamy...it certainly was not. It was tepid at best. And spellbinding? Maybe if you're entranced by the amount of detail of everything. Heartwarming? Hardly. And what's hat about humor? Sorry, I didn't see one moment in this story that offered amusement. It was too dreary for that.

Fabulous first book in the series

If the first book in The Atwood Sisters series is any indication, this will be another fabulous historical romance series by Jessie Clever. The prologue story, previous to this book, introduced the three Atwood Sisters but it is not necessary to read it to understand this story. Lady Amelia feels forced to undertake a marriage to Lucas, most often referred to as the Ghoul of Greyfair but who is more accurately the Duke of Greyfair, to save her family from destitution. Lucas has been disfigured by a fire that took his wife and he has become a hermit. He does, however, know that he needs a wife to ensure an heir. Jessie Clever has, to my mind, created a gothic like setting and story; something I greatly appreciated. I loved the character of Amelia, who feels that she has never been appreciated or understood. Some of that appeal may be because I related to her as the middle sister, but most of it is due to the author’s writing talents. There is heat and chemistry galore in this story. It is balanced with scenes of humour that sometimes had me laughing out loud. The romance is intense and I loved the epilogue that gave us a peek at the lives of the main characters many years after the last chapter - this is one of my favourite things in a great romantic story. I can’t wait to read the next book in this entrancing series.

It was repetitive and so slow.

In some ways I liked it but in others I didn’t. Sometimes it was emotional but often boring. But it was a good book to listen to when you cook or other activities. A good book to pass the time.

The relationship only started for real was in the ending.
Luke first gave her hope fire more but took it away over and over again. A lot of miscommunication and avoidance.
Luke basically avoided her throughout the whole book.

Good for a quiet read but their romance needed a lot of work as it relies mostly on the forced proximity trope. I liked learning about the women of the estate. Minor steamy sections.

I've read a couple of this author's books in the past and found the H's too jerky-Alpha-ish (one I almost DNF'd). I do like a good "Beauty and the Beast"-style romance, though. And at least this H gives a decent apology for his less than stellar behavior at the end, although it takes him way too long to get over his pity party, which is the main reason I'm deducting a star. He carries physical and mental scars from a fire that ended two lives he felt responsible for, but what happened still doesn't justify his violent behavior later in the plot.

For the h's part, she had a challenging relationship with her mother and was ignored by her father growing up. So both she and the H have insecurities they must surmount on their way to their HEA.

The narrative is well-written overall, with excellent (though drawn out) descriptions of the setting. The plot is disjointed in a few places, however. In the opening chapters, the h is nearly killed in a carriage accident in bad weather, H saves his intended from drowning in the carriage, then she's whisked away to his castle and they're immediately married. This really didn't make much sense. The h is still wet, ice cold, and presumably at least a little injured, but they rush through the proceedings as if H had minutes to live and he hauls her in for a fairly rough kiss (nitpick: wedding ceremonies in the Regency period didn't actually include kissing one's bride) and then he stomps off.

H/h have good chemistry in the end, but the sex scenes aren't as tender and heartfelt as I would have preferred and they don't really get to know each other well. There's a scene I didn't care for when H was physically domineering with h in front of the servants and then says during their rough lovemaking scene that this is her punishment (I know some romance readers are into this sort of thing, but it's not my cup of tea). The h spends way too much of the book putting herself down and her apology at the end wasn't really necessary. There's still sort of a "woman as martyr" thread that seems to run through many of this author's books that's rather off-putting.

The secondary characters are pleasant, though they mostly take a backseat to the MC's drama and ruminations. I was interested in Ash's story in particular (he'll feature in the next book). The H's cousin Stephen will also hopefully get his own book.

I plan to continue with the next book in the series, on the strength of the Ash character.

Another cozy read, fast pace, nothing complicated. Another arranged marriage between a girl from a family who is in dire monetary predicament and a wealthy but damaged man in a need of an heir for his wealth and state. They meet, they like each other in the darkness, they struggle to get along; him with his self-conscious insecurity of his burned face and memories of betrayals; her, having to comply marrying a total stranger to save her family from utter ruin. Drama, romantic moments, old truths and new beginnings. It was entertaining.

3.5⭐️ A very good rendering of the Beauty and the Beast tale. Jessie Clever didn’t stop with the portrait of a scarred, introverted, and brutish Duke, but added gentle, magical references from the classic. Contrary to many romances, Amelia and Lucas acted like adults and attempted to understand each other’s issues without blowing them out of proportion. What didn’t quite win me over was the way Lucas finally put to rest a ghost from his past. Maybe, I missed something. Anyway, while I liked the story, and thoroughly enjoyed particular moments, I never fell in love with the overall story arc.

Still, the first book in this series has me eagerly awaiting the sequel. Expecting more of the Marquess and Stephen.

Heroine: Amelia Atwood, about 22 . Daughter of the Earl of Biggleswade (deceased).

Hero: Lucas Bennett, age unknown. Duke of Greyfair. A widower known as the “Ghoul of Greyfair.” He was disfigured in the fire that killed his first wife.

Date: unknown

How they meet: A marriage was arranged between Amelia and Lucas by her now deceased father. Lucas paid a large sum of money for her, which her family desperately needed. They first meet when Amelia travels to Lucas’s estate on a stormy night and is in a carriage accident. Lucas pulls her to safety. Immediately after, the marriage ceremony is performed without the two even having a conversation beforehand.

What happens: Lucas gives Amelia an unforgettable kiss at the end of the ceremony, then leaves. She never truly gets a good look at him. Amelia doesn’t quite know what to think about her new husband’s odd behavior. Amelia made a good first impression on Lucas for her bravery in dealing with the accident. By the time he goes to her room that night, he finds her already asleep so he leaves her alone.

Despite not being there by choice, Amelia tries to make the best of things. Lucas seems intent on avoiding her and when they do cross paths, he uses his hat and coat collar to shield his scarred face. Amelia does take note that his servants seem happy, and figures he can’t be all bad. The housekeeper advises her to be patient with him.

Verdict: I enjoy the trope of strangers marrying. Both the hero and heroine had backgrounds that left them with emotional scars, although at first they had no idea of what exactly the other was dealing with. Each handled things in their own way: the hero by withdrawing and, conversely, the heroine tried to make the best of things. The heroine did more of the heavy lifting in the relationship, although the hero did have the more troubled past of the two. There was a lot of personal growth for the two, as well as a learning process to become partners in the marriage. This is the first book in the series and is a complete story that reads fine as a standalone. There are a few hints about the main characters for the next book in the series.

Steam level: steamy and explicit

Rating: 3 stars

Lucas Bennett, the Duke of Greyfair or the Ghoul of Greyfair needs an heir and in order to get that, he needs a wife. It sounds simple enough to the average guy, but he's horribly scarred from a fire and that makes things a bit more challenging. In addition to that, rumors abound that he murdered his wife. Yeah, getting a new wife was going to be easy for him. He arranged to get one of the Atwood sisters, none of whom he'd met, and ended up with Amelia.

Amelia was everything I like in a heroine. She was sweet, compassionate, innocent, didn't judge anybody, knew her mind but wasn't overbearing, and even a bit vulnerable. She wasn't at all what Lucas had expected, but he needed her, even if he didn't realize it, and she needed him even if it was just for someone to love and accept her.

This story rocked on every level. There was angst, steam, and it was wonderful to watch these two fall in love and heal each other at the same time.

The reason I'm giving it four stars is because there was one big character description of Lucas that was missing...at least, I didn't see it and there were plenty of opportunities to provide it, even as a reminder. There was no mention of his hair color. We got reminders of his blue eyes and his scars, but nothing on his hair color. I know it sounds trivial and petty, but I love it when I can see the characters in my head. It helps me connect with them.

Still a great story and I will continue with the series.

This has nothing to do with the review or the rating, but who is the guy on the cover? Lucas was scarred on the right side of his face. The guy on the cover is as handsome as all get out, but he isn't Lucas.

Lady Amelia has felt lost and neglected her whole life, but she hasn’t entirely lost hope that maybe things can get better, even with an arranged marriage to a disfigured stranger fighting with demons far worse than some scars.

Some parts of the Duke She Married reminded me of Tessa Dare’s The Duchess Deal, but this one has more Beauty and the Beast-inspired elements. The descriptions of Dinsmore castle were vivid and it’s an emotive story.

I wanted Lucas to get over his pity party sooner than he did, especially given how patient Amelia had been. She tolerated a lot, but part of her arc was finally believing that she was worth more than she was getting. Lucas is too domineering for my personal liking—one manhandling scene after he humiliated Amelia troubled me, but not her. Readers who like a jerky alpha who comes around probably won’t be bothered.

I’ve already downloaded the second book about Adaline and Ash, although I’m kind of hoping Stephen gets a book.

I received a review copy from the author.

Overall, it was an enjoyable book. A bit predictable, but I love anything with Jane Eyre energy, which this provided. I enjoyed the characters, and I do hope to read more in the series. Amelia was a really likable heroine, and I was drawn to her storyline. Lucas was the dark brooding Scarred Hero. I wish he was meaner and / or cold. He was more distant and scared. This Beauty and the Beast retelling, Arranged marriage novel really delivered.

Amelia is everything we want in a FMC. She is strong and learning her way and place in the world. Lucas - the Ghoul of Greyfair - is not without his faults, but he does care about his tenants in a way that is admirable.

I really enjoyed the character development of both MCs as they healed from their past and moved toward the future. My only issue is that I just don't know that I felt their connection to each other. Amelia's character growth was done almost on her own, and she helped Lucas heal, but I didn't feel like he brought a whole lot to the relationship.

Stephen, however, is one of my favorite side characters. Just absolutely hilarious and his banter with Lucas is everything. He is wise when he needs to be but also the king of sass.

Overall, definitely recommend for HR lovers, and can't wait to get the next book.

This was a lovely, angsty Beauty and the Beast retelling following a tortured, reclusive and scarred hero haunted by his past and his purchased bride who was raised to believe she was never enough. Lucas has kept himself in the shadows, yet determined to overcome the obstacles that have made it difficult to better the lives of his tenants. He wants an heir, but memories of events regarding his deceased wife make it impossible for him to get his new wife, Amelia, pregnant. Amelia struggles to find her place as Dutchess while Lucas finds it impossible to trust. I found this story heartbreaking but also encouraging as each of them find their way to peace within themselves and, eventually, each other. Looking forward to reading the next book.

Quotes: “Amelia, the rest of me. The rest of me is scarred like my face, and–”
“I don’t care about the rest of it as long as you kiss me again.”

Trigger Warnings: PTSD, death of loved ones.

This is the first book that I've read from this author. It was an enjoyable read and I couldn't put the book down. As the middle sister, Amelia grew up feeling very unloved and neglected. After marriage, she really comes into her own as a person. She was very likable. I also liked Lucas, but I didn't really understand what made him tick. He had a traumatic past but I couldn't understand why it impacted his current relationship in the way that it did. Once Amelia figured him out, she decided that things were hopeless and that she needed to leave. Luckily the crisis was averted and the couple does get their HEA. The story also had lots of interesting side characters. I especially enjoyed the character of cousin Stephen. The witty banter between Stephan and Lucas was definitely a highlight.

Lucas stated away from society vowing never to marry or produce an heir, however he realised without an heir his name would die out.
LADY AMELIA (WAS ALWAYS MADE TO FEEL UNWANTED)

I have been cranky and irritable in the relentless heat and having a sinus infection. The headache that goes with a sinus infection begged for a read that didn’t require much of my brain. I wanted something soothing and enjoyable.

This book fit the bill. The characters are likeable and sympathetic. What I really liked was the fact that unlike many books in this genre, the story moved, the characters grew into themselves and didn’t constantly wait for someone to rescue them. It was a genuinely good story.

Yes, it has a happy ending, not a sappy ending. If these were real people you know- you would be delighted for their successes after all their hard work.

Had it not been for the typos and misspellings this would have been a 5 star read. Such a disservice to a talented writer.

Lady Amelia Atwood has made the most extreme sacrifice. She has agreed to marry the Ghoul of Greyfair so that her sisters might have a chance to secure a better match with a respectable gentleman of worth. Her journey to the Duke's estate soon turns perilous and her first interaction with him leaves her questioning her decision. This story brings two very emotionally burdened individuals together and exposes every single pain and flaw they have tried to bury and deny. Their journey makes for a very heartfelt story of courage and determination to release the pain and guilt of the past and embrace a new beginning. Great Read!!!!!

Beautiful Love Story to Touch Your Heart:
A terrifying beginning to this story that had my pulse racing.
A near fatal accident, a daring rescue brings Amelia straight to the chapel soaking wet and scared to death where she is to be married immediately to the Ghoul of Grayfair.
Wow, this story is off to a rip-roaring start. From that point on I was glued to this stunning and intelligently written story.
There is no end to this amazing love story that follows Amelia and Lucas through many emotional scars as well as physical ones.
I truly enjoyed reading this author for the first time and
I have already ordered the next book of the series.
