Once you have read Hindi authors of the calibre of Nirmal Verma and Agyeya, even Manav Kaul for that matter, you can easily recognise the mediocrity of the mediocre writers ! Light breezy read though.

A super successful lawyer at the height of his career is found to have forged his final year degree. He decides to go back to his college to complete the last year of his studies. Apart from redeeming his own reputation, he wants to achieve another objective - reconciling with his estranged daughter who happens to be completing her final year in that college. But, can the daughter appreciate his father's redemption and forgive him? Or in this adventure, both find the meanings of life, career, success and relationship.
The plot is very interesting. Isn't it?
Divya Prakash's writing is easy to comprehend. Simple sentences. Thoughtful dialogues. Listening to the narration in author's own voice, has its own charm.
Only issue is too many unnecessary underdeveloped characters and side-tracks.
A brilliant listen nonetheless.

कुछ कहानियाँ ऐसी होती हैं जो आपकी ना हो कर भी अपनी लगती हैं. मैं कभी हॉस्टल में नहीं रही इसीलिए हर एक हॉस्टल की कहानी अपने से अलग पाती हूँ। लेकिन ‘यार, पापा’ सिर्फ़ एक हॉस्टल की कहानी ही नहीं बल्कि बिखरे हुए रिश्तों को समेटने की एक कोशिश है।
हर एक इंसान की ज़िंदगी में ऐसे कुछ रिश्ते भी होते हैं जो समय की धूल से धुंधले पड़ जाते हैं और उस धूल को साफ़ करने के लिए एक समंदर का पानी भी कम पड़ता है। बहुत कोशिश करने पर ही इन रिश्तों से सिलवटें हटती हैं।
इस कहानी में मैंने उन्हीं रिश्तों को पाया जो अब समय की धूल से धुंधले हो चुके हैं।
दिव्य प्रकाश दुबे की ये पहली किताब है जो मैंने पढ़ी और ये किताब हमेशा मेरे दिल के क़रीब रहेगी। अपने पिता से हमारा रिश्ता काफ़ी अलग होता है। ये बाक़ी रिश्तों की तरह हल्का नहीं होता बल्कि एक चट्टान की तरह हमेशा हमें हौसला देते हुए खड़ा रहता है।

This is my fourth book of dubey ji and i liked all of them, i am father of 20 months old boy so i had lots of expectations but it failed ,it failed miserably. I thought it will be somewhere in the zone of Aapka Banti, shirt ki teesri button but is too mediocre. It felt too superficial there are groups where everyone is having same family issues and i highly doubt that tuere will be any college hostel where principal knows that his student is having drinking smoking in hostel and takes no disciplinary action. On trip boy is having weed even in front of facilities and principal. On the 1st meeting girl fell in love with the who is her uncle's age. Ajeeb si hi kahani chal rahi. Very poor writing. In one line it is written that sasha priya k kuch hi log parichit hain in next line it is written they onow only one person there.

This book got me out of my reading slump. It is an ok book, it somehow tries to bind a lot of stories where people have issues with parents or family with one story being the major one. Some stories start and go nowhere in the book. A lot of characters have little to no relevance. But the writing is good. It is slightly poetic, kind of trying to insert deep discussions in regular narration but they never seem forced.

This was one of the best books written by DPD. The story was emotional and you can connect to the bits and pieces. Also loved the excerpts of life advice in every chapter.

मुझे यह पुस्तक मेरे लॉ स्कूल के फाइनल ईयर की शुरुआत में मिली, और शायद इसी कारण यह मेरे दिल के और भी करीब जा बैठी। यार पापा की कहानी के कई पहलू मुझसे इतने गहराई से जुड़ते गए कि हर पंक्ति जैसे मेरी अपनी ज़िंदगी का कोई पन्ना बनती चली गई।
बहुत समय बाद फिर से हिंदी साहित्य पढ़ने का मन हुआ, और इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते-पढ़ते यह एहसास बार-बार हुआ कि हिंदी से दूर होकर मैंने जैसे अपनी ही आत्मा से दूरी बना ली थी। अपनी मातृभाषा में लिखी कहानियाँ कुछ अलग ही तरह से दिल को छूती हैं क्योंकि वे न सिर्फ़ हमारे समाज और संस्कृति का प्रतिबिंब होती हैं, बल्कि हमारी अपनी जड़ों की भी याद दिलाती हैं। और जब कोई कहानी आपकी अपनी ज़िंदगी से थोड़ी भी मेल खा जाए... तो वो अनुभव बस कहानी पढ़ने का नहीं, बल्कि उसे जीने का बन जाता है।
यार पापा के पात्र—मनोज, प्रिया, साशा, मनोज के पापा, मीता, गजेंद्र, अनुभा, गुनगुन, डेविड, बाबा, स्माइलिंग अंकल—हर कोई अपने आप में एक मुकम्मल दुनिया लिए हुए हैं। उनकी ज़िंदगियाँ, उनके आपसी रिश्ते, और उनका ताना-बाना इतनी संवेदनशीलता और सादगी से बुना गया है कि पाठक एक बार किताब उठाए तो खुद को उससे अलग करना मुश्किल हो जाए।

had lot of expectations bcz of the title which I really loved and thought it would be something related to a boy/girl in school days who loves his father but is unable to express due to a certain stigma and father is strict and all as when he says yaar papa this or that the father would say speak properly I aint your friend/yaar and in ending when he says yaar they hug or something that sort ...instead it's a cliche drama story ..which I didn't like at all typical rich bollywood movies type smh..

As always Divya Prakash Dubey doesn't disappoints. A heartfelt story of love, parental relationship, redemption, forgiveness, friendships and forgotten ties. The story revolves around Manoj Salve, a well established and one of the most successful lawyer who is at the peak of his career, realises that in his quest for fame and money, he lost something invaluable. His daughter, Sasha's love and the company and care of his wife, Priya.
This is my second book by Divya Prakash Dubey, first one being Musafir Cafe and I am so glad that I gave in to the hype of books by D.P Dubey.

A news surfaces saying that Manoj's law degree is forged resulting in his decision of going back to his college to complete the final year of his degree. Apart from completing his degree, his another objective is to fix his relation with his daughter, who seems to hate him now. But does she realises her father's efforts ? Does she forgive him ? Does Manoj finally achieves redemption ? Is he able to fix his relationships? Who leaked the new of Manoj's degree to the media ?
The book, in its easy to understand language, answers many questions on life and unknowingly makes you realize that we are meant to live life instead of making it complicated.

The plot revolves around themes of choices, human predicaments, decision making and the crossroads of resolutions that we humans often find ourselves at. One of the most remarkable things about Divya Prakash Dubey's books are the settings. He has beautifully contrasted the city life with that of life which resides amongst nature. While Musafir Cafe had it's setting in Mumbai and Mussoorie, Yaar Papa is based in life at Delhi, Pune and Goa. The natural landscape of seaside of Goa is a soothing balm to an aching heart. The natural elements -sky, stars, sun, moon, ocean, butterflies, mountains ( as in Musafir Cafe), plants - in the books of D.P Dubey are important characters in their own way who provide solace to the characters amidst their turmoil and also become witness to their choices.

The writing style is simple, elegant and the book can be read by anyone who has never ventured in Hindi language. You won't be disappointed !

*This is not a review. These are just my thoughts while reading*
Till chapter 57: This book has all the stereotypes that I have seen. A celebrity lawyer/businessman/politician, with estranged children. A separated wife. Two very good friends from college with successful careers but with not so happy personal lives, etc. etc. So there is no novelty in the story as per me. The book uses many english words and phrases, sometimes, written in the english language, which makes me think about our dependency on english, that it is so sad how we are not able to think of even one sentence without using a english word. But it is how it is. There are somethings which I did not fully understand yet, for example, that it is mentioned Manoj only took cases that he wanted and did not care who he is messing with, contradicted with the fact that at the start of the novel, when he was on a holiday in london and he did not want to be disturbed he picked up someone’s call even though he did not want to and the reason for that was “the person on the call couldn’t be ignored”, so i though so much for taking cases as per him whim. And second thing was the age of Gajendra’s child. Manoj and Gajendra were of same age, and Sasha (Manoj’s daughter) was in college studying in final year of law college, whereas Gajendra’s daughter was very young. And did he become a father after marriage of Anubha or how it was? Was Anubha younger than Gajendra by a lot, so the timeline seemed a bit messed up there. All in all, it is a good time pass story, author tries to be poetic now and then, by comparing life to so many things. Also, one more stereotype was a brilliant student on weed all the time. I mean like seriously???
Till the end: Hmm….there were simply a few moments where i felt like crying when Manoj’s life got sorted. But I still don’t like the story because it seemed like a bollywood movie. I think i forgot while writing before about one more cringy and stereotypical character called baba. Why does he call everyone baba, and why does everyone call him baba. I cringed every time he said sasha baba. The story was full of buts and pieces that I have seen dozens of times. I did not find any kind of novelty in the book.
Till chapter 57: This book has all the stereotypes that I have seen. A celebrity lawyer/businessman/politician, with estranged children. A separated wife. Two very good friends from college with successful careers but with not so happy personal lives, etc. etc. So there is no novelty in the story as per me. The book uses many english words and phrases, sometimes, written in the english language, which makes me think about our dependency on english, that it is so sad how we are not able to think of even one sentence without using a english word. But it is how it is. There are somethings which I did not fully understand yet, for example, that it is mentioned Manoj only took cases that he wanted and did not care who he is messing with, contradicted with the fact that at the start of the novel, when he was on a holiday in london and he did not want to be disturbed he picked up someone’s call even though he did not want to and the reason for that was “the person on the call couldn’t be ignored”, so i though so much for taking cases as per him whim. And second thing was the age of Gajendra’s child. Ek pita or beti ke tute huye रिश्ते को इतने सरल sabdo me piroya gya ki ... I loved the story. The way it has been written is commendable. Read it and be the part of this beautiful journey. This tale encompasses the lives of a father, son, daughter, friends, wife, and strangers, delving into the pursuit of unfulfilled dreams, the acquisition of fresh perspectives, and the reconciliation of fractured relationships.
अच्छे twist हैं तो आगे क्या होगा, जानने का मन करता है। कहानी के साथ साथ जीवन दर्शन की बातें भी बीच बीच में आती रहती हैं- जिन्हें दिव्य जी अपने ट्रेडमार्क स्टाइल में लिखा है। बहुत सी पंक्तियाँ मन को छू जाती हैं और आप एक बार रुक कर उनके बारे में सोचेंगे और अपने जीवन से relate करेंगे। चरित्रों की कहें तो मनोज साल्वे तो दमदार हैं ही , बाबा पवी बहुत ही मज़ेदार लगे! उनके डॉयलॉग्स, बातें और कैसे लोग अपने चारों तरफ़ दीवार खड़ी करके ख़ुद को अपनी वास्तविकता से अलग कर लेते हैं साशा के इनर कॉन्फ़्लिक्ट्स और फ़ीलिंग्ज़ भी अच्छे से समझ आए हैं। कहानी के अंत तक हर किरदार अपने सपनों को एक नया आयाम देगा।

यार पापा! - दिव्यप्रकाश दुबे
कुछ कहानियाँ लिखी ही इसलिए जाती है की उसे हम सिर्फ़ एक बार नहीं बार बार पढ़ने पर मजबूर हो जाए। ये भी इन कुछ कहानियों में से एक ही है। कभी नहीं सोचा था की कहानी के शीर्षक को पढ़ने के बाद मैं इतनी curious हो जाऊँगी कहानी को पढ़ने के लिए। मुझे पढ़ते वक्त तो ये लग रहा था की ये कहानी कहीं न कहीं जा कर पहले करैक्टर के पापा की बात पर ही शुरू हो कर ख़त्म हो जाएँगी।

ये मेरी ख़ुद की एक observation है की जब भी हम कोई कहानी पढ़ते है तो बीच में कई बार हम उस कहानी को अपने हिसाब से गढ़ना शुरू कर देते है। और शायद इसलिए कई बार एक लेखक अपनी कहानी को आखरी में इस मोड़ पर ला कर छोड़ देते है जहाँ से वो चाहते है की reader ही अपने हिसाब हिसाब से लिख दे।
इस कहानी में शायद वो बात जो की अधूरी रह जाती है वो थी नहीं, हर किरदार को अपना अपना एक रास्ता मिल ही गया था पर फिर भी। अधूरा अधूरा ही होता है।
पढ़ने की बहुत सी वजह है और दुबारा पढ़ने की सिर्फ़ एक वजह है वो है ख़ुद दिव्यप्रकाश जी। एक साधारणसी आम हिंदी को इतने ख़ूबसूरती से उतार देना, कुछ बात तो कहता ही है उनके बारे में भी।

I just finished reading "Yaar Papa" and it felt less like reading and more like living someone else’s life for a while. The character Manoj, his emotional disconnect, Priya’s loneliness, and the entry of the Goa friend make for a heartfelt journey.
Mita’s support and honesty, and Gajendra’s bond with Gungun and her mother, add depth and realism. The talk between Sasha and Smiling Baba, the fort trip, and the case battle are especially memorable.
The father’s emotions tied to his land, and the father-daughter relationship, especially when they study together again, really moved me. The book also touches on how corporate life affects family time, something many of us can relate to.
With stories like the government school and the tea shop, and the bittersweet misunderstandings during the Goa trip, this book captures everyday struggles with warmth. It truly felt like watching a meaningful film in slow motion.

दिव्य प्रकाश दुबेजी की “यार पापा” को पढ़ते हुए ऐसा लगता है जैसे किसी ने आपकी छाती पर रखी वह अनकही, अनसुलझी कसक धीरे-धीरे खोल दी हो, जिसे आप बरसों से शब्द नहीं दे पाए। यह कहानी सिर्फ एक बेटी और एक पिता के बीच खूबसूरत दोस्ती की नहीं, बल्कि उस भावनात्मक दूरी की भी है जिसे हम भारतीय परिवारों में अक्सर ‘सामान्य’ मानकर जीते जाते हैं।

Yaar, Papa is a story of a man named Manoj, who is a father to a daughter and a son of a dead father. The storyline is simple and the writing style is also crisp and thought provoking. The writer effectively merges the story with life lessons that feels deep and personal. It feels good to see new writers in hindi literature who are writing such impactful stories. It's not a story that needs to be read only by children, it also has lessons for parents. Hope more people read it and understand how lucky they are to have parents and how parents could pass on the baton to next generation.

This is my first book by Divya Prakash Dubey Ji. And I am in love with this book. Kuch kitaabein, kuch kisse taumr aapke sath reh jate hain aur ye ek aisi hi kitab hai. Ye sirf ek kitab nahi hai ye humein jeevan ke woh path padhati hai jinse shayad hum bhaagte hain.... Ye sirf Manoj ki apni degree pane ki koshish nahi hai balki apne bikhre rishton ko sahejne ki jaddojehad hai. Aage badhte-badhte hum aksar apne un rishton ko bhi peeche chhod dete hain jo humare bahut aziz hote hain aur humein is baat ka ehsas tab hota hai jab hum akele ho jate hain. Ye kitab us akelepan ko bhi bakhubi darshati hai.

It was an easy read. Like few books are tough to read, rather you want to read and re-read every single word. While few make you want to read even faster, to know how this ends - the no brainer ones, like a rom-com. This book fell in the latter category. I finished this off in 3 days - my fastest read in ages. But yes, I guess I needed such easy read right now.
However, I found this book slightly preachy, slightly judgemental. As if, an attempt is being made to make everything around right. Sabkuch acha acha sa end karna, avoiding any controversies, everyone is morally clean, which is probably the extreme end of fiction.
Overall, I will rate this book at 3 stars.
