Why is this satirical book named “Haasyaavadhanam”? A friend asked why this book has this title. I told him the answer will be on this page. First, the process of paying attention is something I like and respect immensely as a viewer. “Avadhanam” is a folk performance of popular literature in India since ancient times, focusing on this aspect. “Avadhanam” originated as a Sanskrit literary genre and took on a somewhat new form over time, mainly by Telugu poets.
As far as I know, the real purpose of the attention process in this ancient art of “Avadhanam” is to demonstrate mastery of cognitive abilities, through entertainment. It may be since creativity includes literature, poetry, music, mathematics, puzzle solving, etc. in addition to observation, memory, multitasking, task switching, retrieval, reasoning, etc. All of this involves very carefully divided attention. Hence, this process requires unwavering attention and multi-tasking. I believe that the satire we do and see in our real life, like politics, mythology, school-church, house-office, small-big, wife-husband as seen in this book,"Hasyaavadhanam", is also divided attention, alongside multi-tasking. There lies my answer - for the great deal of love and respect I have towards this performance called “Avadhanam” and “Hasya” meaning “Funny”, “Satirical”, the fusion of these two words birthed this book title "Hasyaavadhanam”.
Whoever would hear or read the name of this book, would think about this wonderful ancient process known as “Avadhanam”, would talk about it with those who know of it and would educate those who don’t know of it about its uniqueness and how meaningful it is - and with that, I would have achieved my goal! Keeping this exaggeration aside, my family name being “Avadhanam” is just a coincidence or it is divine! If you like this name, bless it or else, forgive this small effort with a big heart!
The book's title is really something that I didn't know as it is quite a unique word. I am quite sure that many of the readers here also won't be knowing the meaning of the same. But, once you get to read this book you understand that this word has a beautiful meaning and how important it is to know about it. Once you will read the blurb, you will get to know the superficial meaning of the word which will create a little bit of curiosity in you to know more. But, once you start reading it you just can't stop. It's like a whole world of knowledge out there and in depth and you will be immersed in the narrative and wouldn't stop till you complete the whole book.
The best part about this book is that the author has kept the funny side in the narrative along with some amazing illustrations. You would have an adventurous journey reading this book filled with humour. Hope to read more such books from the author soon.
