About the author

Fredericus Joannes Antonius Maria "Fik" Meijer is a Dutch historian and author. He studied classics and ancient history at Leiden University and graduated in 1973. Meijer is an emeritus professor of ancient history at the University of Amsterdam.

He has written numerous non-fiction books on the ancient world for a broad audience, a number of which have been translated into multiple languages. He has also published several translations of classic works into Dutch.

Fik Meijer heeft research gedaan naar de laatste dagen en de dood van de 87 officiële keizer die het Romeinse Rijk gehad heeft. Het valt op dat maar weinigen van hen een natuurlijke dood gestorven zijn, en dat er vele waren die maar een heel korte tijd geregeerd hebben. Ze hebben dus, naar mijn mening, maar weinig gehad aan het feit dat ze de hoogste positie in zo'n uitgebreid rijk bekleedden. Zoals ik al wist, ontbrak het in Rome niet aan intriges en complotten, maar bij het steeds verder lezen in het boek, was ik toch verbaasd dat die elkaar maar bleven opvolgen, en gedurende zo'n lange tijd!
Ik heb toch weeral veel bijgeleerd van dit boek. En ik hou wel van de stijl van Fik Meijer.

Pročitao sam je na bratov nagovor. Bilo je zanimljivo vidjeti o tome kako su se svi borili za dolazak na vlast, nekako s nadom kako oni neće kobno završiti nakon neke urote. Pokazatelj kako su ljudi (tada, baš kao i sada, samo što danas ne padaju glave) željni moći.

Nekada mi je malo zbunjujuća količina imena, knjiga se ipak svodi na zadnje dane života careva, uz neki mali kontekst kako i zašto je do toga došlo. Dovoljno povijesno (iako je to teško reći pošto ima jako puno nagađanja) da ima težinu, dovoljno jednostavno da se svidi i nekome tko ne čita baš često povijesnu literaturu.

Osim toga, bilo mi je lijepo vidjeti razmišljanja careva o pretkazanjima i drevnim bogovima i kako je to znalo utjecati na njihove odluke.

Het feit dat de opzet van het boek ervoor zorgt dat alle keizers (hoe onbekend ook) ongeveer evenveel aandacht krijgen, bevalt me. Het maakt het boek zeer geschikt als naslagwerk.

Ik had me echter voorbereid op een boek waarin de dood van de keizers centraal staat. In werkelijkheid is het meer een zeer beknopt overzicht van de regering van die keizers met als vast einde het einde van hun leven.

3 sterren voor het gewetensgetrouwe systematische overzicht van regeerprestaties en levenseinde. De soms snelle opeenvolging van leiders, het verraad en gekonkel, de kloof tussen 'lang aan de macht' en 'goede keizer', de macht van toeval en lot, ... het nuanceert de bril waarmee we naar de huidige machtsstrijden kijken. In eigen land, Europa of wereldwijd.

Slechts drie sterren door de schrijfstijl. De taal van een ouderwets hoogleraar. 'Hij was geboortig uit een niet nader kenbaar adelijk geslacht'-stijl. Dat gaat in de opeenhoping van dolksteken, gifbekers, verhangingen en wurgingen aardig tegensteken.

This is a fun book. It covers all emperors from Julius Ceasar until the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus. It is packed with details, and anecdotes. Some emperors were looking the death right in the eye, without any fear, other were begging for their lives. Some thought they were immortal and one emperor was killed while urinating. If you like to have an easy read into the Roman Empire, this is your book. It can also serve as a quick reference to all Roman emperors. I give it 5 out of 5, because I re-read it multiple times per year.

Het boek begint bij Julius Caesar, en gaat vervolgend verder via figuren als Nero, Diocletianus en eindigt bij de laatste 'echte' west-romeinse keizer Romulus Augustulus. De schrijver verteld vloeiend over het leven van de keizers en de verhalen lopen vaak in elkaar over wat het boek één geheel maakt. Een aanrader voor iedereen die iets meer wilt weten van de Romeinse keizers.

A fantastic book - extremely engrossing writing and provides a unique, insightful, and ultimately highly effective way of looking at the Roman Empire through the deaths of its leaders. The author also does a great job of providing enough context to allow the reader to understand key moments and individuals, so that anyone who isn't familiar with the Empire's history won't find themselves lost or overwhelmed.

En inderdaad: er wordt weinig op bed gestorven in dit boek. Het gif, het zwaar & het wurgkoord. Dat vat het geheel wel samen. This is a short but interesting summary of the lives and deaths of the Roman emperors until the fall of the western empire. Despite the title, some did die in bed. But in general, being made emperor gave you a very good chance to have a violent death.

The first chapter, I was not impressed with this book. Each emperor was given a short overview and then an account of his death. These few paragraphs about influential men like Caesar, Augustus and the rest of their dynasty seemed brief and overly simplistic. These are men that feature in every history book about the Roman Emperors and to whom you can dedicate a library if you wanted. However, the strenght of this book does not lie in the account of it's most famous subjects, but in that of its most obscure ones. Because of the format, relatively unknown emperors get almost the same amount of attention as their better-known collegues who so often overshadow them. This is the first book I've read that actually tells me about those emperors that are otherwise forgotten.

Another strength of this book is that it becomes more apparent how emperor and empire influence each other. A capable and long-reigning emperor can stabalise the empire. In the same way though, an unstable empire can make it difficult for any emperor to stay alive. Emperors like Nero or Caligula could never have lasted as long as they did during the turbulent years of the soldier emperors or of the divided empire.

The book does get rather confusing, however, after the empire is split up and it has two lines of emperors to follow. Switching around from east to west and back again makes it difficult to keep track.

A gift from my brother-in-law. This book covers the complete history Roman Empire from Julius Caesar onward through the deaths of its emperors. The author contends that you can learn a lot about how these emperors lived and ruled by seeing how they died. Few of them died by natural causes -- hence, the book title. If you';e interested in a concise history of the Empire, this is not a bad place to start. In 163 pages, the reader is introduced to a concise bio of each Emperor, his ascension to the throne, major accomplishments of his tenure, the political dynamics in play, and; of course, the circumstances of his death. Additionally, there is preface material examining the background of Rome, the author's sources, maps, genealogies, bibliographies, etc. A good compact history that could also serve as a reference.

An interesting book covering the emperors from Julius Caesar and Augustus to the little known later emperors at the fall of the Western Empire, including many obscure rulers most people would not be familiar with. Most of them did not die of old age and some of the demises were truly horrible and truly tragic. Assassination seemed to be an occupational hazard which begs the question of why anyone wanted the job in the first place!


A useful guide with maps and geneology tables, I would recommend this for anyone with an interest in Roman or ancient history.

In het begin, bij de meer bekende keizers vond ik het boek erg aangenaam om lezen. Zeer vlot geschreven, leest als een trein. Maar op den duur begon de opsomming soms wel een beetje te vervelen...
