My expectations for this book were not set correctly. I hoped it would focus on the first past - how to figure out what your path should be (illuminate), but instead it was mostly a generic career advice book with barely a chapter devoted to the 'illumination' part, and not a very clear one at that - though I suppose if I really put full effort into doing all the exercises, it would be more useful. I have downloaded the workbook from her website and I will try that. Overall, a bit disappointed. But as far as overall career advice/job search book, it's a decent one.
I have reached a point in my life where I find great satisfaction in helping others succeed. This comes after many years of pursuing personal excellence and striving for competitiveness in an academic research environment. Now, I am adjusting my compass, and this book has given me much to ponder. While many of the points made in the book may not be surprising, they have reinforced my belief in value-based decision-making. If you are at a similar stage in life, this book could prove to be a worthwhile read.
What Lights You Up? is the most inspiring career book I've read! It helped me discover what I love about my work and gave me the tools I needed to seek out and do more of it. From the light log to the 3P's exercise, this gave me a true framework for success. It's helpful not only in that discovery process but it also guided me in how to keep my LinkedIn presence up to date, how to negotiate a raise and really succeed in a new role. I'm recommending it to any of my friends who are feeling stuck in their jobs. Get this book and find joy in your work, you won't regret it!
