Rate this book
Have you ever fantasized about having more time-now, this minute, to accomplish everything you need and want to get done today? Or wondered why time flies when you are thoroughly engrossed in something? Or why minutes pass so slowly when you're standing in line at the store or airport, or on hold waiting for a customer service rep to answer your call? Or how, simply, to find more time to relax and unwind? Now, with The Secret Pulse of Time, already a longstanding best seller in Germany, internationally best-selling and award-winning science writer Stefan Klein has crafted what amounts to "operating instructions" for time. "We are all taking part in a giant experiment in dealing with time," Klein writes-and his aim with this book is to help us each to understand "the degree to which our experience of time hinges on our outlook on life."With his journalist's unerring eye for the telling detail, Stefan Klein effortlessly combines original investigation and reportage, personal revelation, and a wide-ranging, commanding presentation of scientific research among disciplines including brain physiology, social psychology, philosophy, and Einsteinian physics-with the goal of guiding us not only to better master time but also to understand why we so often fail to do so. Woven into his narrative are dozens of practical ways to make sense of and gain control over time, How not to lose your head when a deadline is quickly approaching How the present becomes a memory-and vice versa How to attune to your inner clock for more productive, satisfying days How to avoid becoming worn out by the fast tempo of modern life Popular science at its very best, The Secret Pulse of Time awakens us to and empowers us with the idea that time is far more at our disposal than we have ever before realized.

This is a history of our time perception, the overview of science regarding our time perception, the overview of the philosophical implications of time and in the end - advice about how to enjoy it better!

No previous generation had so much leisure time and such a long life span. Yet everyone reports that they don't have enough time.
It is essential to understand the laws governing inner time.
You need to get out in the sun - to avoid getting depression.
We experience time exclusively against the backdrop of events.
Our frame of mind determines whether we experience time as protracted (you are sick) or fast (you are happy)
Tea ceremony - which can last up to 6 hours - opportunity to enter a different time zone and embark on enlightenment.
When brain is underutilized - it turns to inner monologues and anxiety. Brain will focus on nothing instead of nothing!
Psychological experiments shown that when we depressed,, we dredge up the most aggravating tragic and most humuliating scenes of our lives. Not the other way around.
We also have the ability to tone down the drama of the past - that's the secret of "good old days"
Life speeds up as we get older - because the novelty and variety of our experiences diminishes.
The effect of TV and media -not only do they rob us of time that might be more spent in a more meaningful pursuit, but they also create a zone devoid of memory. It's as if a black hole has swallowed a part of your life.
People who are not in control of their time die at an earlier age. Source of stress is far less problematic if we think we can modify them. If we think we are in control of our time - we are much less stressed.
When people visualize what they want to accomplish, the bodily response makes them feel they are there.
Take breaks and refresh your energy. Otherwise -it's just a dreary list of tasks.
Having no time is a status symbol in the US. But - figure out - what really needs to be done???

Six steps to a more relaxed life:
1. Flexibility over your schedule
2. Being in harmony with your biological clock
3. Cultivating leisure time - create and guard it actively. Enjoy activities for their own sake!
4. Experience the moments - short beauty of things
5. No multitasking. And do more sports
6. Decide your priorities - on a daily basis
