After his first mystery series flops, struggling author Thad Griffin is about to throw in the towel. And then one night over Ramen noodles, he and his wife find a popular show about alligator hunting on TV. He suddenly has an idea. On a wing and a prayer, he takes his wife on a trip to the swamps of Louisiana, where he gathers an entire notebook of ideas while visiting the colorful towns of Galliano, Pointe-aux-Chenes, Bourg, Chauvin, and Cocodrie. He’s so filled with inspiration that he pens the first book in his new Gator Haven mystery series within eight weeks of returning home. The series is an instant hit, and fame soon finds the author. Convincing his wife that he needs to be closer to his setting, he packs up the family and moves to Mechant Loup, Louisiana. They’re not there three months when tragedy strikes. Members of the Mechant Loup Police Department respond to the scene and they find Griffin’s wife dead in her own driveway—the victim of an apparent hit and run. Clint Wolf is lead on the case, but details are scarce and a motive seemingly nonexistent, so he’ll need lots of help from his team. A stolen car and a gas receipt might provide some clues, but it’ll take much more than a piece of paper to solve the mystery. Clint and company sift through lies, evidence, and manuscripts, but will it be enough? If they fail, it’ll be too late for a second victim—and none of them want that loss on their conscience.

Hard to stop reading once you begin! Another exciting story about the Wolf clan and their friends. I look forward to reading the next episode in Clint and Susan’s life in Louisiana. Characters are well drawn and suspense is great. Anticipating another good novel soon.
Once again a winner of a book! I anxiously await each new installment! I guarantee once you start this series you will want to read them all back to back!
This is the 2nd in a row that I've found to be a bit lackluster. The previous one spent too much time in the swamp tracking bad guys. This one just never got interesting. There wasn't much detective work. And I'm bored with Clint taking off to other states. Surely, an actual cop would call someone from those jurisdictions to do the investigating for him. I don't know that it would be so simple to get away with killing people out of state as he and/or his coworkers do pretty much every time they leave the state.
I really liked Shade and was disappointed when he moved away. Now, we have Homer as a replacement. Although, Regan still hasn't been replaced. Killing her off in the previous book was unnecessary. Homer seems to be almost a clone of Shade other than his background. And do police agencies allow people to perform as cops before the police academy or equivalent? At least Shade had some training, buy Homer just graduated from high school. In fact, the book starts 2 or 3 days before his graduation but then his graduation is never mentioned.
A sheriff's deputy needlessly dies in this book, too. It isn't really a spoiler because it isn't someone we know. And it was only in there to give Homer another chance to be a one man army.
They say when one door closes, another opens. I don’t know if I believe that, but I know people don’t fill empty slots like opportunities do. Thankfully, this is fiction, and when you lose a friend, there’s room to gain one. At the end of the last book, Mechant Loup is downtown officers. We gain one at the start of this book. He’s not only a familiar face. He’s a rising star who will be fun to watch.
This story will appeal to writers, as the crime targets an author’s family. After the detectives eliminate enemies, the writer becomes a suspect. He insists he’s a target because of his work and not his life, but none of his books—neither the bestselling series nor the failed original series—point to a suspect or motive.
As usual, all is not as it seems.
This was an interesting take on the crime-writer trope. Add to it a new crime fighter (and a potential enemy of his own), and you’ve got not only a great book but the promise of more fireworks to come.
Another great read. For me it was not one of his best, but definitely very good. A new character, Homer, seems like he will be very interesting. I think the author jumped the gun, however. Homer is not even completely done with school…close, but not quite. His heroics on his first day were a bit much. In the previous book he was more believable, it was obvious that he was a young boy that grew up in the swamps and bayous, therefore being very resourceful and capable of handling himself in face of dangers of that area at his young age. But he is certainly a good addition, great attitude and hopefully will blend in well with the crew.
I’ve read all the series and this one just seems to fall a tad short of the others. Really like the characters but the new guy Homer, while very likable, is really written into a position that in real life he would never find himself. No one is hired, given a gun and uniform and put into the field. Should have had him coming out of the police academy rather than a boat from the swamp. The constant afterthoughts of why one can’t do something is getting old!
The problem with this particular book for me was that one chapter (chapter 12) the author seems to lose his characters' identities. He mixes them up and I had to read it twice to make sure I was seeing the error. Also, at the end he calls one of the bad guys by a wrong name. As an author, I know it's hard to keep characters and their names straight, especially when the editor is the author. Otherwise the story keeps the reader's attention.
Vengeance is never a good thing. Crime is always evil. Don't give anyone ideas. The only bright spot in the story is the new recruit. Just a young Tarzan from the swamp with a good family and upright spiritual values shows his desire to be a good police officer. Heroes abound in this novel.
Bluff has penned another success for Clint, Susan and the team. Homer is amazing, and I can't wait to hear more about him. Any and Baylor are quite the team too, and I look forward to meeting their son.If In have one criticism of is that the scenes of cops rolling the Lexus were a bit long and repetitive.
HOMER MAY HAVE A VERY PLAIN NAME BUT HE IS AS INTENSE AS THEY COME. I THINK HE IS WAY TO INTENSE I WONDERED WOULD HE LIVE THROUGH THE BOOK. HE REMNDS ME OF FORREST GUMP. THIS WAS A WEIRD PLOT BUT IT WAS GOOD. I COULDN'T GET ALL OF IT BUT I GOT SOME OF IT RIGHT, I HAD MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT SOME OF THE ENDING. ;D
Susan hires a new deputy Homer, and his first day starts with a bang. They are called to investigate a dead body, and the lady had been run over, and her 8 year old son is missing. The father is a famous author but seems to be hiding something Fast-paced action packed with a little new love thrown in
As always I devour these books in a very short time frame. This one was different in its main theme but was classic Merchant Loup at the same time. I love this book!
Fast-paced read. BJ BORG is a great storyteller. Characters are believable and well developed. Love the newest character! Homer needs to be kept in the story. It will be great to watch him mature in his new life.
Exceptionally well written. The book gives you a mystery to solve while also introducing a new hero. In the end Clint comes through. Strongly recommend reading the book to see how.
Another homerun hit. Looking for a wild, twisting ride? Look no further than the Clint Wolf series. Believable characters that you will love and hate. Storyline will have you on the edge of your seat needing to know what happens next.
This is a five star book just like all the Clint Wolf books are . This is a book you can't Dow till the end nor do you one to. I love the suspense and the thrills of this series. I highly recommend this book and series. I can't wait for the next book.
This book is a little different than his other books. New trainee Homer Verdin is a very likeable person and I can't see how he evolves as he becomes a full deputy. Author Thad Griffin seems to be a likeable person at first, but in the end, I did not like him at all.
Good reading. Great story. Believable fiction. Love all his books. Clint Wolf is a good character, and working with your wife isn't always a good thing. But it works here.
Always amazing and captivating. Holds your attention with heart pounding anticipation for the next chapter and gives you a great insight into how the characters are feeling and connects you to them.
Another great Clint Wolf book! It was so exciting from beginning to end. This one is a book you won’t forget. Well done author BJ Bourg! I highly recommend this book and the Clint Wolf series.
This story was a very good read. The story line and how new characters were introduced was excellent story telling. Great read and begs the question, what would you do for Fame. What are you hiding from your past life.
The plot was well thought out and very different from many other stories. The ending was good and bad. How did Thad’s life turn? Surprise ending but I enjoyed the book
What can you say but awesome, great story line, page after page, gripping and pulling you deeper into another one of Merchant Loop southern crime mysteries, fantastic characters and their lives as police investigators.
Yup, this one caught my attention right away and held it until the last page. He introduces some very interesting new characters as well. I have wondered, however, why he does not involve his dog in more of his escapades? Maybe he will later.
It has been 3 months since I'd read the last one and I was so excited to see this one release. And like all of those in the series, this one is also awesome!
