He’s as cold as he is criminal…Who does a former lady go to when there is nowhere left to turn? The Duke. But every refuge in this cruel world has a price. The cost for Ophelia Lexington to be housed in the Duke’s brothel…. Her virginity to be sold to the highest bidder. She’s as talented as she is innocent…One look at Ophelia Lexington, daughter to a baron, and Clayton knows he should cut her loose. She’s too beautiful, talented, and far too fragile for his world, but those are all the same attributes that make her highly desirable. And not just to prospective clients. The desire burning inside him, threatens to consume them both. She’s meant to be his greatest asset. Instead, she’s becoming his worst temptation.
This is my 103rd book by Tammy Andresen. I have been reading her since 2017. Needless to say, after reading over 100 of her books, y'all know she is a favorite. 😊 Most of her books are quick reads (between 150-180 pgs) but still really good. She still gets pretty good depth in her characters and the storylines are good. I am really loving this series.
I liked Ophelia and Clayton. I liked the storyline and their characters. This one seemed to read really quick but still a good read. Can't wait to read more in this series.
Ophelia Lexington has reached rock bottom, homeless after her father died & her brother incarcerated in the Fleet prison, she has no money & is sleeping in a doorway until a passing woman tells her to go to the Duke. Clayton Duke is the illegitimate son of a duke, which one he doesn’t know. He runs a brothel but it’s more of a refuge as he tries to encourage the women to move on, marry or find employment. But every refuge in this cruel world has a price. The cost for Ophelia Lexington to be housed in the Duke’s brothel…. She’s to be sold to the highest bidder. But Ophelia has other talents & Clayton realises she has other talents. The eleventh book in the series & it could easily be read on its own as it’s a new chapter in the series. I loved both Clayton & Ophelia, their chemistry sizzled. He’s in the middle of a business deal & realises Ophelia’s singing voice & expertise playing the piano is worth far more than auctioning her plus the more time passes the more he wants her for himself. There’s mystery & romance, characters from the author’s other books make appearances & there are surprises. A very well written book. Which I read in a sitting My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A Devilish Duke. My fellow readers. Ladies, Clayton is the strong, protective, dominant man that any woman would love to be near and caressed by. Ophelia just happens to be that young woman. I liked the writers direction that she took as far as having the two characters meet. I will say I was naive just Ophelia believing that she was lucky to come across the green door. Be careful of the colored doors ladies. What’s behind said door is not what you intended for it to be. I loved the innocent flirting immediately began from the beginning of Clayton and Ophelia meeting. I could feel the emotions through the characters actions and dialogue. Having Ophelia play for Clayton was one of the beautiful parts to the story. The romance was an easy story to follow. I enjoyed the book immensely. The writing was impressive and well written. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
Ophelia Lexington has hit rock bottom. Starving, no money and no place to go, her only option is the brothel owned by Duke. Clayton Duke is all business, but takes care of the ladies in the house and gives them options for another life. Ophelia is drawn to Duke and has no fear telling him what to do. Duke can't believe he let's her, but he will do whatever it takes to make her happy. This series has some interconnecting characters and makes for short great reads. Mild descriptive sex.
The eleventh story in the Lords of Temptation, this series gets better with each new story. Lady Ophelia Lexington and Clayton Duke meet when she goes to him for work as her father has died and her brother is in debtors prison. This story is my favorite to date in this series. I want to read the next story.
I've really been enjoying the Lords of Temptation series and this one is no exception. Even though I shouldn't like Clayton since he's literally a pimp, his character is written in such a way that you tend to like him in spite of what he does!! Known as the "Duke", he takes in women who have fallen on hard times and gives them the choice of working for him in his brothel or arranges good marriages for them. When he meets Ophelia who is as beautiful as she is talented, he feels protective of her and although he at first thought of "selling" her to the highest bidder, he soon changes his mind.
Ophelia, finding herself sleeping in doorways, ends up at the Duke's brothel where all her dreams come true. She gets to sing, falls in love and her brother is also saved. She is so innocent, it's quite delightful:)
Well written and I've always enjoyed the way Tammy Andresen writes, her books have become a "must read" for me!
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Look, this wasn't the worst thing ever. But I wasn't great and I didn't like either character. It feels played out and boring and honestly did not keep my attention. The spice was lacking as well.
PLOT:
Ophelia is homeless and destitute when her father dies and her brother is sent to debtors prison for his debts. With no other options and in possession of uncommon beauty, she ends up on the Duke's doorstep. The Duke (who's not actually a Duke at all) takes her in as one of his girls in the brothel he runs. He tries to stay away from her but circumstances bring them together.
THOUGHTS:
- I REALLY wanted to love this but I just couldn't. Ophelia is so bland and it bored me to tears. She's got no personality aside from being angelically gorgeous, slim and talented and Duke is kind of a creep. He runs a whorehouse and literally profits on the sex trade and he wants to keep Ophelia "pure" / doesn't want to corrupt or sleep with her. My dude, really? You expect me to believe that a brothel owner doesn't want to take advantage of a pretty girl with talents? I find that hard to believe.
- The whole business deal thing made no sense to me. The whole book Duke is preoccupied by this sale but like why does it take so long and there's all these side characters - like just meet, lay out terms for solicitors to work on and wrap this up. Also, they literally they want to pay him to make a women's refuge? What? Where's the money on that. Also.... The whole "saving" women from sex work thing and how he treats Ophelia like some sort of doll because she's a virgin gave me the ick. Like if she had had sex one time so as to not starve to death you know she wouldn't have been as highly valued and prized by him as she was.
- Duke annoyed me, he acts like he's doing this great thing by giving women a safe place to work because his mother had him out of wedlock and had nowhere to go. EXCEPT.... it's not like that at all. He only chooses beautiful women, profits on their labors and has no personality to boot. There's nothing generous about him, he's just a business man.
- Ophelia is LITERALLY a lady?! Why does she keep saying she's not but also acting like she's one at the same time. Pick a lane. Also, she randomly goes from making finger sandwiches and singing to being all fiery and feminist and wanting her own money. I respect that as a modern woman, but in the context of a historical novel it feels jarring and unrealistic, especially since she doesn't care if he marries her and would have no concept of women making money in her circles (unless there were companions or governesses). Also, she's basically in love with this man but freaks out and goes to some random man she barely knows just because Duke didn't want her to do g anymore ?! How dumb can you be.
- lastly.... WHERE IS THE SMUT?! It's a story about a brothel, I (apparently incorrectly) assumed there would be a bunch of spicy scenes where they aren't sure what they are before they finally fall for each other.... Nope. We just get Ophelia singing, helping with dinner, some kissing she initiates and a vanilla sex scene towards the end. Maybe it's just me but I was expecting a lot more.
This was an okay addition to the Lords of Temptation series (a spinoff of the Lords of Scandal series), but I did have a few minor issues with it. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded down to 3 stars.
I read the Lords of Scandal series, but it was some time ago, so I had already forgotten a great deal about the plot and characters. It would help, I think, to read the Lords of Scandal series right before reading this spinoff series.
Ophelia was likable, and it was sad what her father had done to her family. She and her brother both almost died because of their father. If Ophelia hadn't met Clayton, they probably would have.
I liked that Clayton was trying to help desperate women in the only way he knew how. He was running a brothel where the women were well-treated, and were allowed to leave at any time. They were encouraged to get married, and he even helped them find good husbands. He wasn't thrilled about running a brothel, but knew he couldn't afford to provide for so many women without the brothel's income. It did bother me that he considered selling Ophelia's virginity, since that wouldn't have been her choice. I get that he thought the money would help him save more women, but I was still really glad when he decided not to do it. After that, he was very good to her, and even helped her brother.
I liked that Ophelia and Clayton fell in love while he protected and cared for her. They were good together.
I also liked that the Smith brothers invested in Clayton's business, to allow him to rescue women without running a brothel. He truly became who he was meant to be then. Ophelia's influence on him helped with that.
Other reviewers have mentioned that this series has lots of historical errors, and that the couples' behavior and language often doesn't fit the rigid cultural requirements of that time period. That is true, but I don't really mind in this case -- since I am reading the series merely for entertainment. If I were looking for historical accuracy, I would read a classic author like Jane Austen.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
A Devilish Duke (Lords of Temptation #11) By Tammy Andresen
Ah, what I have been waiting for, a new group of Lords and Ladies and yes a new threat!
Lady Ophelia Lexington believes she might have reached the bottom in her young life. Since her father died, leaving Ophelia and her younger brother Max has not been what either one of them expected. Max is in debtor’s prison with no way to pay back his father’s debt. Ophelia has slept in stoops and a variety of other places, but now it looks like the only place open to taking her in is a house of ill repute; run by a man called The Duke.
Clayton Duke doesn’t own a run of the mill house, his aim is to allow the women to make money and either leave with a monetary cushion, a better job or as a wife. The problem with his new tenant is Ophelia is an innocent. Even with ten months on the streets of London, she is still and innocent. A beautiful innocent…a beautiful innocent who is becoming his worst temptation.
Clayton has been approached by a group of men who potentially may purchase this home and employ him to open more; but there are questions …. so many questions!
The author has brought readers a new storyline with some old friends, Lord Griswald (Gris) Smith along with a few others. They have a plan for a new business and it seems Clayton is who they want to have of their side. A meeting with all of the investors opens up not only new doors, it opens up the past for Clayton, doors he never though he would see.
As a relationship begins between Ophelia and Clayton grows, his plan is to keep Ophelia safe and try to help her brother pay off their late father’s debt. In the meantime the new threat has tried several times to harm Ophelia and Clayton is in need of more security, hopefully his potential new partners will be willing to help with that.
This was a quick read…I put that down to how quickly the action moved from event to event. This was a five star read for me! New characters, new stories and a new threat…to them all!
I have read all of the books in this series so I'm always excited to see what is coming next. This story opened up the world of brothels and the different treatment. Duke was a great character and I loved how he was tough with a soft heart like all the Smith brothers. The connection between Ophelia and Duke was sweet. Both characters were well developed and quite lovable. Although I didn't like the sudden outburst by Ophelia against Duke toward the end. It just seemed misplaced unless I misunderstood something I thought they were only asking for her not to sing until the sale was finalized. After all Duke had done for her, that didn't seem like an unreasonable request, but her reaction to go seek help from another man, who happened to be one of those requesting that she stop singing, so quickly seemed somewhat disloyal and unappreciative of all he had done for her in my opinion. There were no real villains, at least ones that kept them apart, in this story. I like when couples express their feelings early on instead of having it drag out for the entire book. The ending was happy for many because there were surprises for both of them which is why I gave the book 4 stars. I do love a happy ending! The only thing that I didn't like (just my personal preference not a writing issue) was the actions of Ophelia that I discussed above and why I couldn't give 5 stars, but I did really enjoy this book and can't wait for the next one.
In the shadowed corners of Regency London, where secrets swirl like mist over the Thames, we meet the enigmatic Clayton Duke. His icy demeanor hides a maze of intrigue, and as a desperate Ophelia Lexington seeks refuge, she unknowingly enters his web.
Ophelia, once a baron's daughter, now faces dire straits after her father's death and her brother's incarceration. Impoverished and exposed, teetering on her own downfall after enduring the harsh streets, she discovers Duke's establishment—a place concealing secrets darker than midnight.
Duke, the master of this clandestine domain, offers her shelter and help to regain her health, but at a cost: Ophelia’s virginity, to be auctioned to the highest bidder. Yet, beneath his cold exterior, desire simmers—a flame that threatens to consume them both. As their hearts tangle in a dance of danger and longing, the story weaves a tale of passion and redemption.
This well-written book offers the reader a blend of romance and mystery, where love blooms in the most unexpected corners of a devilish world. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ophelia Lexington has hit rock bottom. She has lost her home, her fiancé has rejected her, and her brother is in debtor’s prison. She is cold, weak, and nearly starving when a woman on the street tells her to go to the Duke for help. Clayton Duke, bastard son of some duke or another runs an unusual brothel. The women in his house are encouraged to decide for themselves what their lives will be, the brothel, independent, or marriage. Duke helps them achieve that goal. He knows immediately that Ophelia is different. Duke is negotiating with the Smith Brothers and their associates to sell the brothel and work for them setting up other houses. He believes Ophelia can help him because she has the knowledge and skills of a lady. Along the way, Clayton, a man who has sworn not to marry falls in love with his unexpected treasure. Things seem to be progressing when a new villain appears. A with the other book in the series, this one has mystery, danger, and unexpected romance. It also has the discovery of one brother and the rescue of another. This is wonderfully exciting story with a great plot, remarkable characters, some twists and surprises, and a happy ending. Interesting story and characters. I am looking forward to Lockton’s story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
With the words of her shallow ex-fiancé ringing in her ears, Ophelia discovers that the bottom of the hole into which she has fallen is far deeper than she could ever have imagined. Being brought down to a place where she will do whatever it takes to be warm and to have food in her stomach, she follows the road pointed out to her to The Duke's house of ill repute. Once there, she finds that she may have too much class to become employable, especially when the Duke himself protects her from his clients. Duke has sworn off marriage, but will never turn a desperate woman away from his door, which means that he is in a quandary over how to best deal with Ophelia. He cares far more for her than for any other woman, but it is only when she finds that there is a way in which she can earn her keep and help her brother that he recognizes that he wants to be the one on whom she relies. The novel, a copy of which I received as a gift, is a standalone and comes to a lovely conclusion.
Left penniless with her only brother in debtor’s prison, Ophelia has been living on the streets, cold, thin and frail. When she is instructed by some other ladies on the street to go see “Duke” at a known whorehouse, she goes as she has no more choices. But she wasn’t prepared for the Duke, and his honor with his women. Finding out that Ophelia is a talented singer and pianoforte player, Duke keeps her as a way to bring in better clientele and to help the sale of his business, but he wasn’t prepared to fall for a woman…
This book is a quick read, and it has all the elements the reader is looking for. Instead of high society with the ton, we have a look inside a different class of people, but who are more honorable than a lot of the society people. There is danger, intrigue, romance and a quick moving plot. A very different historical that has a great story and a charming cast of characters
Ophelia is on the bottom. Life, she once lived ended and she has nothing except herself. She lives on street and slowly succumbing the hunger. So she has no choice, but to sell the last thing, she has, her body. When she arrived at the steps of luxury brothel, she is so weak, that si literally fells into owner´s hands. Duke is bastard son of some duke, which didn´t give him his name. So his mother gave him the surname Duke. He is in negotiation for selling his brothel, when he gains unexpected treasure, beautiful Ophelia. But someone doesn´t want that the deal is successful done, and will do everything to stop it. Thrilling lovestory, with strong heroine and dashing brooding hero.
Tammy Andresen is a wonderful author who writes stories which I love. This story is about Ophelia who is a baron’s daughter who is left alone with no money after her father dies and her brother goes to prison for the father’s debt. She has been on the streets for a while and is at her lowest point when someone recommends her to go to see Clayton Duke. He runs a house with women, but he is a fair boss. He wanted to sell her virginity, but then he started to have feelings for her. I did enjoy the story, but I will admit this was not one of my favorites of the series. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest opinion.
Another excellent installment in the Lords of Temptation series by Tammy Andresen. Each book tells its own story yet manages to intertwine the characters from other books seamlessly. Clayton Duke, so named because he was the bastard son of an unnamed Duke and his mother, the daughter of a Baron. Duke runs an unconventional brothel seeking to better the women. Ophelia is a Lady driven to the streets by the death of her indebted father. Ophelia, starving and weak falls at his door. The story unfolds in unexpected ways drawing in the secondary characters. I loved this story! Lockton is next,
He is neither a duke, nor is he a devil. The one thing that he seems to be is an enigma. Can Ophelia solve the puzzle that is Clayton? Can she reach inside his heart?
Ophelia has no place to turn, so she goes to Clayton’s brothel. Will he sell her virginity to the highest bidder? How can he when she is becoming everything to him?
Clayton has a reputation for being ruthless, but is there more to him than meets the eye? Can the man who is protecting Ophelia be so heartless? What is Clayton's story, and why do they call him “Duke?” I enjoyed this entertaining novella and would recommend it. It is a historical romance with treachery and suspense.
What a great book! Clayton and Ophelia’s story is similar to the Smith series, but unique on its own. Interwoven into the characters from the other series, it is very complimentary to the characters I know and love. So heartwarming to have a woman who is scraping the bottom of the barrel but who stays true to herself and her character, incite change in the most unusual place. Really a great story, and as always, I can’t wait for the next one!!
I received a free copy of this book from the author. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the eleventh book in the series but it could easily be read on its own as it’s got new things going on. There is lots of fast paced action with both mystery & romance and as well written as usual. Characters from the author’s other books make appearances so if you have read the other books you can catch up with them. It is a quick read that can be read in one sitting. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Grumpy meets a beautiful woman who is down in her luck thanks to her scoundrel father. Her younger brother is imprisoned in Fleet Street prison. She is lost living in the streets with the only talent is being a Lords wife. She ends up in a brothel that Clayton owns and he figures he can make a fortune from raffling off her virginity. Well that was his plan Cupid has other ideas.
I enjoyed reading this book and all the intrigue that came about with this story. Another strong woman in trouble only to be saved by a very strong man and one who protected women who could not protect themselves. He teamed up with others to make sure that all women who ended up on the streets had a way to get have a safe place to go. I highly recommend this book! ❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
A solemn start to a fascinating story. The life of a woman is never her own, never easy as Ophelia unfortunately discovered. Living on the streets, no options and starving leads her to the Duke. Clayton Duke runs a brothel where he protects the downtrodden women and offers them choices for their futures. A very sweet, well-written story that will give you all the feels.
Another fantastic book By Tammy Andreson. Miss Tammy writes such great books on the Regency Era that you just automatically fall in love with that time and the characters.. Each book joins with a previous book but is done in a way that events happen to friends who in some way help and protest each other.
This was great! I'd wondered how it would tie in with those gorgeous Smith brothers, and now I know. Of course, it can certainly be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Tammy Andresen has a gift for writing an exciting overarching story arc full of stand-alone stories that are both romantic and hot!
Returned for refund. I’m soooooooo fucking done with scumrat heroes who own ssex clubs or brothels. Peddling disease, depravity and destruction isn’t sexy.
