What would you do if there was an earthquake?

Students at a high school in North California are rehearsing for a play when one happens. I liked the characters and their lives and backstories. I especially liked Sandy and Miss G.

In Disrupted, B. Linn Goodwyn has created an atmosphere and storyline that is both true-to-life because of school and relationships, but also shocking because of what happens with the earthquake. It’s shocking to me at least as I have never lived in an area where there are earthquakes.

I enjoyed learning about earthquakes in my physical geography lessons. Disrupted is a lesson in itself: a lesson through the students’, teachers’ and townspeople’s experiences of the 7.1 quake. This aspect is especially interesting to me as I have a degree in human geogaphy which studies the effects of humans on the physical environment and their lived experiences of it. This includes lived experiences of natural disasters.

My mind immediately started forming questions:

Will they get out alive?

How will they move on?

and more.

I think the book will make everyone ask questions. That’s great, as it certainly made me think and reflect. The subject matter and way it’s written will capture a lot of people’s hearts. It did mine.

The plot is immersive and atmospheric. I have no experience of earthquakes fortunately, and I was concerned, anxious and even fearful for everyone.

The novel is definitely not your standard YA one It’s full of real life for the students, some romance, but also adversity and it all felt so real. It was almost as if it were happening around me. This excited and fascinated me, and made it even more compelling.

The pacing is perfect.

Will San Ramos High and the town ever be the same?

Thanks to B. Lynn Goodwin and Women on Writing for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Masterfully scripted, Disrupted by B. Lynn Goodwin is a heartfelt chronicle of a teenager growing up in times torn by chaos and loss.

Our protagonist Sandee is a suburban high school student in northern California juggling algebra II quizzes with her real passion, stage managing her high school theater troupe’s fall production, six months after the tragic death of her brother in Afghanistan. When a series of megaquakes devastates her community and forces her school to close, sensitive self-starter Sandee inspires her friends to save their play by uniting, soldiering on through school closures and power outages, and reaching out to their community for support. All the while she struggles with the everyday challenges of adolescence, coping with the departure of her childhood crush and best friend while navigating the enticing mixed signals she receives from the mysterious new boy in town.

Crafted with concise but insightful dialogue, the author paints her characters brightly, deftly displaying the contrasts between what they say and what they feel. Sandee is motivated and strong, yet vulnerable and often confused by her feelings. The author skillfully weaves multiple story lines about the tragic challenges faced by Sandee’s friends and parents, using common threads of learning to cope with loss and adolescent self-discovery. She places the reader inside the rooms of shuddering buildings and the minds of grief-stricken teenagers trying their best to put their lives back together.

This coming-of-age story is engaging and hard to put down.

Prepare to be swept away on a poignant and uplifting journey with this remarkable coming-of-age masterpiece. Goodwin skillfully navigates the intricate terrain of a world grappling with the aftermath of a natural disaster, painting a vivid and immersive landscape that pulls readers into the very heart of the narrative. The characters, who are all distinct and realistic, each bear their own heart-wrenching stories, forming connections with readers through their struggles, triumphs, and, above all, their humanity.

At the forefront of this narrative stands an independent and capable main character, Sandee, a beacon of inspiration who refuses to be held back by her circumstances. Amidst the backdrop of rebuilding a sense of normalcy, the book delicately weaves a sweet love story. Sandee's relationships, both familial and platonic, are beautifully portrayed, providing a heartwarming counterbalance to the more intense moments of the story.

In essence, this book is a celebration of the human spirit's indomitable strength. It transcends the boundaries of its genre, offering a universal tale of growth, love, and resilience. With its compelling characters, vivid Bay Area setting, and a narrative that seamlessly blends the personal with the collective, I wholeheartedly recommend Disrupted to anyone seeking a powerful and uplifting literary experience.

I’m well beyond the teenage years so I don’t read much YA books. I do believe this book would have interested me decades ago so I recommend this for teens. It’s a good story that is consistent and entertaining.

Arguably, one of the main characters in this cleverly crafted novel is not even human but an earthquake and its aftershocks. From the offset, as the title implies, lives and communities are severely disrupted by the events surrounding an earthquake in the San Francisco area of California in the October of 2019.
This is a coming-of-age tale that sees the main protagonist, sixteen-year-old Sandee Mason, experiencing very difficult situations and decisions. Throughout the narrative, she is confronted by the effects of grief following the loss of her brother in the war in Afghanistan. This trauma manifests itself differently on Sandee and her parents and especially on her mother.
Another important feature of the book is the fact that Sandee and her friends are in the throws of producing a school show called Our Town. Sandee is the stage manager and this role influences many of her thoughts and actions.
Ms Goodwin successfully illustrates how theatre can be reflected in ‘real life’ when some of the characters and events in the show are echoed in the situations pertaining to the lives of the characters in the novel.
There are wonderfully crafted tensions throughout this compelling read. The ways in which the earthquake manifests itself into all that happens is the main tension. Another is the appearance of the mysterious and suspicious Pete who attempts to inveigle himself into Sandee’s life. We are witness to Sandee’s dilemma in terms of her relationships with Pete and Diego, the boy next door who is forced to move away from the community because of the damage done by the earthquake.
Sandee’s school suffers considerable earthquake damage causing it to close for a prolonged period which, in turn, puts the future of the show in jeopardy. This is yet another tension. It is how Sandee reacts to these tensions that transforms what could have been yet another tale of tragedy and loss into an uplifting inspiring and highly entertaining story.

i wanted to like this, and there are aspects of this i liked (the premise itself), but as someone who is not much older than the main character (i was 21 in 2019, the character was 16; i was also a drama nerd in high school), i found her voice and those of the other teenagers in the story unbelievable. there are anachronisms throughout as well--i think the best way to put it is it reads as someone who is significantly older but isn't in touch with high schoolers as they are in the 21st century wrote this. i think this could be more effective if written about high schoolers in a different time period, because there are genuine good things about this (i especially liked pete's character a lot and i felt like there was an interesting exploration of certain social issues there, and the general throughline of the earthquake and putting on the play is also strong), BUT a lot of it didn't work for me, especially the main character's voice and some teen supporting characters' voices. it felt a little bit like we wanted to make sandee too much of a role model and sometimes it read like an afterschool special or like something for a much younger audience, but then BAM we're confronted with serious topics like addiction and grief dealt with EXPLICITLY. (like, i was a theatre kid, so not exactly cool, and yet the theatre parties were insane; everyone in high school was drinking/trying to get their hands on alcohol; maybe it's just me, but when i was 16 i was horny as hell, and everyone was either getting some or trying to; it feels weird to me that not only sandee is super prudish about drinking and sex in 2019, but so is EVERYONE else around her. even good kids are letting loose IN MY EXPERIENCE. these felt like teenagers from another time, both due to this and to how they use technology, and how it does not square with my experience or those of teenagers i currently know or recently knew.)

i think, for example, john green does a great job (imo) of writing believable teens who are still "good", you know? but flawed. my favorite was pete here perhaps because he IS so flawed. i also liked the exploration of grief in general here. i just feel like, as someone who was not much older than the characters in 2019, the way the teens acted here was too unrealistic. so overall, a mixed bag for me.

I understand what B. Lynn Goodwin was trying to do. I just wish that there was more editing involved in the process of this publication.

Sandee (with 2 e's) is a junior at a California high school when the state is hit by a 7+ magnitude earthquake. The story is about Sandee's resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedies.

I found the story hard to follow. There were a variety of different issues that are briefly handled, but nothing is dealt with deeply, which is a great shame. For example, there's some mention of body image issues, but they just kind of start to resolve themselves. There is no introspection that leads to choices that leads to new outcomes. There's homelessness, sibling loss, war, poverty, parent loss, depression, addiction, climate change... There's even some paranormal element, with uncertainty about what caused the earthquake and the aftershocks. Oh, and a very brief mention of incest and pedophilias, which was kind of just thrown in there for good measure. There's some character development, but I didn't find it to be plausible. There were a lot of conversations or choices that didn't make any sense to me.

Sandee also finds herself in a love triangle that only she knows about. It's not clear if the two boys in the "relationship" are aware that there's this conflict, or are even aware that Sandee likes them in a romantic sense. There's a lot to be desired in terms of dialogue and character choices.

In addition, there's just some basic proofreading that needs to be done. The chapters are each supposed to have headings with the date and location. The year starts of as 2019, then switches to 2017, then disappears altogether. It's not that big a deal, except that when it switched back to 2017, I thought there were time jumps. There weren't. It just needs to be fixed. Some chapters don't have the heading at all. Sometimes the location is specific (Sandee's living room) and other times it's vague (San Ramos).

The book is a decent draft that would be a good story with some decent editing. I feel like the author was trying to do too much, when focusing on one or two main issues would make the story much more compelling.

In Disrupted, B. Lynn Goodwin crafts a narrative that deftly combines personal tragedy with communal crisis. The story unfolds in the town of San Ramos, shaken both by a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake and the emotional tremors of loss. The protagonist, Sandy, grapples with her brother's death amidst the chaos, casting a poignant light on her struggle. As the earthquake forces the indefinite closure of San Ramos High School and disrupts the school's production of "Our Town," Sandy, along with fellow students and the stage manager, rallies to salvage the play. Their collective effort not only aims to revive the school spirit but also to gather funds for reconstruction, embodying a powerful testament to resilience and solidarity.

Goodwin's vivid portrayal of the setting lends a graphic intensity to the novel, enhancing the reader's immersion. Her narrative is peppered with a well-defined cast that enriches the plot. Each character, from the protagonist to the supporting roles, is carefully crafted to contribute significantly to the storyline, adding layers of intrigue and complexity. The plot is robust, featuring elements such as conflict, twists, and a satisfying resolution, all of which anchor the central theme: perseverance in the face of adversity. Goodwin infuses the story with themes of grief and loss, providing a deeper, more reflective dimension to the tale.

Disrupted resonates with a message of hope and determination. It suggests that the human spirit must prevail regardless of life's upheavals. This narrative may strike a chord with many readers, offering both a source of inspiration and a reflection on the enduring human capacity to adapt and overcome. Through its compelling characters and engaging plot, the book not only entertains but also inspires a resilient outlook on life's unpredictable challenges.

In B. Lynne Goodwin’s latest young adult novel, Disrupted, the effects of a series of rolling earthquakes mimic the ups and downs of the protagonist Sandee’s life as she navigates budding relationships and discovers her own strengths. Set in California where the characters are used to the possibility of the earth rocking and rolling beneath their feet, but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to what seismic shifts might do to their lives. With a believable first-person viewpoint and a knowledge of her setting, Goodwin weaves the story of the quakes with Sandee’s need to feel somewhat grounded in her own home since her family is still recovering from her brother Bri’s death in a Middle East war zone.

While Sandee and her friends wait for their school to be rebuilt, the drama club struggles to keep their production of Our Town afloat. Though they struggle with the logistics, Sandee’s determination pulls them through, and her ability to rise above at all costs shines a light on the human ability to endure all odds.

Goodwin’s deft handling of dialogue, her understanding of teenage relationships, and her masterful weaving of a number of sub-plots make this a story for both the YA group, as well as adults. Strongly recommend for anyone who’s faced a situation they cannot control—like natural disasters. The questions and suggested discussion topics at the end of the book will make this one that instructors can easily add to a high school literature course.

Disrupted
by B Lynn Goodwin

An evocative tale of resilience, community, and the power of the arts to heal and unite. Set against the backdrop of San Ramos, a town reeling from the devastation of a 7.1 earthquake, the novel weaves a story of high school students grappling with personal challenges while striving to salvage their performance of Our Town.

At the heart of the story is Sandee, the determined stage manager navigating her own grief over the loss of her brother. Her journey of healing mirrors the town’s recovery, offering an intimate lens into the transformative power of purpose and collaboration. Through Sandee and her peers, Goodwin captures the raw struggles and triumphs of adolescence amid upheaval, delivering a heartfelt portrayal of young people stepping up to support their community in innovative and meaningful ways.

Goodwin’s prose is fluid and immersive, drawing readers into the fraught yet hopeful atmosphere of San Ramos. The earthquake’s aftermath is depicted with both stark realism and a glimmer of optimism, as the students’ efforts to fundraise and rally their town breathe life into the story. The themes of perseverance, teamwork, and the enduring relevance of art resonate deeply, making this novel both timely and timeless.

Disrupted is a compelling read for fans of contemporary fiction with heart, offering a reminder that even in the face of disaster, hope and creativity can thrive.

I absolutely loved this book! The author has crafted an engrossing YA tale (which adults will love too) about the trials and angst facing high school drama club teens when their region of California experiences not just a major earthquake, but the scary trauma of an ongoing swarm of smaller aftershocks, tremors, and fierce winds which assault their community in the ensuing weeks. I have never been more glad to live in the Midwest! The teens, led by main character Sandee, struggle to stay connected as their school closes for major repairs, their planned stage production is cancelled, and they are torn apart by the relocation of their families. One character's father is even heartbreakingly missing throughout the tale. Sandee bravely faces the uncertainty by rallying her fellow students to put on a fundraiser using their combined talents, all while supporting her friends throughout the cascading challenges as the story unfolds. The kids are not perfect, but they try and they persevere and they retain a sense of humor—making them quite believable and well-developed. My compliments to the author on her presentation of the themes of determination and tenacity in the face of loss; she does a stellar job. I highly recommend this book!

Disrupted, A YA novel by B. Lynn Goodwin, is set in Northern California, where an earthquake and multiple after shop, deeply affected the community. The storyline revolves primarily around the high school students at San Ramos High School, with the MC being Sandee. The earthquake first hit as the students were rehearsing for the school performance of Our Town.
I found it ironic that the play the students were performing slightly mirrored the events unfolding around the teens. The author was able to develop the characters through back stories and personal traumas, including the disappearance of one teen father, who was presumed dead after the quake. Family, secrets, and triumphs were uncovered.

The teens banded together not only to help each other, but to help other members in the community.

Disrupted is a heartwarming tribute to humanity’s indomitable spirit, demonstrating how people come together in the face of tragedy. What truly made it special was that the heroes in the story were teenagers.

I received a copy of this book from the author. However, the review is my honest review of this work. .

This is an entertaining novel for high school age readers. Goodwin uses the background of recurring earthquakes to explore a number of issues of interest to youth. There is a runaway, fleeing an unhappy home situation. There are young people who face great loss and must deal with grief. There is even a bit about being over weight and quite a bit about climate change. There are some good lessons about relationships and restoring them too.

Perhaps the best part of the book is how the young people rise up to help the community in the throes of disaster. Some exercise leadership skills while others show compassion for those in need. Even adults get in the act, inspired by the passion of the young people.

Goodwin has added good discussion questions and even some project ideas so this would be a good choice for a teen book group. It would also be of interest to high school students active in drama and the arts.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through WOW Women on Writing. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Disturbed is a Young Adult novel that tells the tale of a teenage main character that struggles to return to a life of normalcy after a series of earthquakes changes her life for good.

Through the trauma of losing her brother and the destruction of the high school -- and teenage innocence -- the main character rises above it all to help her help others.

I appreciated the strength of the teenager as she tried to get over her grief by focusing on what she could do for others.

From the dialogue to a teenager's inner thoughts, this book captured all the turmoil experienced by young adults during the most difficult part of their life.

This story makes a great read for young adults and grown folk alike. It could be a great story to encourage open discussions and the sharing of thoughts between two very different age groups.

Overall, I give the story 4 stars.

The main character in “Disrupted” by B. Lynn Goodwin sets an amazing example for young people trying to negotiate a complex society. Without being preachy or parental, she sets sterling examples for dealing with the quirks, positive and negatives, of other human beings of all ages. Sandee, the main character, is strong, intelligent, kind and demonstrates the ability to think on her feet.

The story delves into the emotions of young love, distrust, loss, and uncertainty. It depicts models and strategies of decision making that could well serve the target age group. Through well-developed characters, Ms. Goodwin explores determination and the strength to overcome both personal and community obstacles and tragedies. This is a very topical book that teens will love to read because they can identify with the issues. Earthquakes, homelessness, family grief, friendships, growing up all feel so real and so NOW. How would we react to the big one? This story offers some insight into how we might feel and what we might do. It could also be a warning to heed the call to stave off Global Warming before natural disasters destroy our cities.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in these topics. It would be a great book for a book club or an English class for discussion and the discussion questions in the back are excellent!
Ms Goodwin has a keen sense for teen angst and teen dialogue. It reads like it was told by a teenager. Well done!!

I stayed up late reading this YA novel, even though I'm grandmother age!

Sandee loves stage managing for her high school theatre group. Then an earthquake--this is set in southern California--destroys the high school. One friend, whose home was destroyed, moves away. Another friend's father is missing for weeks. All this reminds Sandee, painfully, of losing her older brother in the Afghanistan war.

But Sandee discovers her resiliance. She plans, and manages, a show with her high school friends, to raise money for the theatre program.

Maybe I loved this because I, too, am a theatre nerd. But the adventures and growing pains should intrigue everyone.

PS There are a few unexplained theatre terms, like "spike the stage." Would be interested to know if others find these difficult.

A heartfelt and engaging coming-of-age novel that beautifully explores grief, community, and finding one's voice. Lynn Goodwin centers the story on Sandee Mason, a dedicated stage manager whose world is shaken by both the loss of her brother and a literal earthquake that closes her school. Sandee's journey from grief to becoming a unifying force for her community is compelling and authentic. Her optimism and reliability make her a captivating heroine, and her growth into a strong leader forms the emotional core of the story. With an even, digestible pace and strong themes of personal development, this is a perfect read for anyone seeking a story of resilience and hope.

I totally enjoyed reading this book. Initially, I didn’t think a book about earthquakes and teenagers could hold my attention. But author Lynn Goodwin creates enough drama and thought-provoking situations to keep the pages turning.

I easily related to the characters, following their daily lives, and the disruptions caused by the earthquake. I thought the character’s honest thoughts and fears of maturing into a young adult were spot on.

The different effects a natural disaster has on families, especially teens, made the story interesting. It’s an easy read that flows smoothly. The book concludes with discussion questions and project ideas to challenge the reader.
