Immersed in the world of Travis Bishop Performance Horses, Travis gets an unexpected call from CIA Director Tom Stewart. Tasked with the challenge of uncovering a mystery at a CIA safehouse that has gone dark, Travis reluctantly finds himself facing a growing threat against the United States the likes the country hasn’t seen since 9/11.
With no communications with the agents inside, Travis travels to the safehouse to see what happened. The trail it puts him on drags him into the deep throes of conspiracy and terrorism and challenges his very loyalty to the people he used to work for.
Can he find the source of the threat before it’s too late?
I have read numerous books from this author in different series. I've enjoyed them for the most part. This one, while a compelling story, had a couple of shortcomings in my opinion. First, I felt there was too much repetiveness with names and titles. A couple of the characters were introduced in different parts of the book by full name and title. I thought that was a bit overdone. This certainly isn't a reason not to read the book. I just thought it was a bit redundant. Secondly, and again not a deal breaker, I felt that some of the characters could have used a bit more fleshing out. Perhaps this was done in earlier books in this series and if so, I retract my statement. I liked the premise of the book. A Chechen terrorist threatens to unleash a disaster somewhere inside the United States. Exactly where and what the disaster is makes the gist of the plot. The main character, Travis Bishop, races against time and against his wishes to stop the disaster. The author does an excellent job of moving the action along and has enough plot twists to keep me turning pages.

This is book five of the Travis Bishop Thrillers series and once again, Travis has been called away from his world of performance horse training, whilst on a trip to see some Italian horses being trained, to deal with checking out on a safe house, at the President’s request. Apparently he is the only asset, even though that is ex-asset, who is anywhere near the area, that could go in and check why a group of four CIA operatives haven’t checked in from their safe house in rural France. When he reaches the area, he stays and observes it for an hour before moving in, only to find three dead agents, with no sign of the fourth. They were gathering data on a growing threat to the US, coming from Chechen terrorists, that is said to be worse than 9/11 if it isn’t stopped. Travis thought he as finished once he reported back to the other agents he was to report to, but it seems they now have word of where the fourth agent might be and he needs to go and break the man out! He doesn’t get off the job that lightly though, as it seems he and this other agent are the only ones that can follow the path of the terrorists and the weapon they have managed to steal and to smuggle into the USA. They seem to have a very rich benefactor, who is the main person pushing the actions of the terrorists, who are keen to make the US pay for their continual funding of Russia, as the Chechen’s seek to break free from their control. The Chechen’s are a determined people and will do anything to make their mark on their opponents, even killing the family of those they are targeting.
They want to spread fear across the USA and force change from the government. Travis will find himself at the mercy of a paid assassin, who was betrayed by the Chechen leader, as well as having to work with his ex-fiancé’s sister, which brings some unsettling memories back for him. He and this other agent are left to track the Chechens and try to find the device they have and stop it from beign used. Travis has some very good insights as to what the possible target may be, but that is only part of the puzzle, as he knows there must be more to the attack and they only discover that at the last moment! The trail takes them to Washington, D.C., where NSA action gives the Chechens a chance to escape and Travis uses his intuition to track the lead Chechen at his main target. A shocking event takes place and he is lucky to have survived, thanks to a stray dog and the assassin, and all he wants it so get back to his ranch in Texas and never do another job for the CIA or any other government organisation. Not that it will last, as all of his previous jobs for them have shown! No doubt there will be another call and he will have to drop what he is doing to help save the world again. Lots of danger and action, with not a lot of any of his home life in this one unfortunately. There will always be someone seeking to take down an enemy, and someone who will have to try and stop them! I can’t wait for another story. Travis has gone to Italy to gather information on how they do training that he can use on his ranch. Travis receives a call from the CIA Director asking for help. Travis no longer with the CIA reluctantly agrees. He is asked to check on a safe house which has gone silent. When he arrives there and after watching it for a few hours, he goes to the house where he discovers 3 bodies. He is not able to locate the 4th person that was supposed to be there as well. He reports to another safe house his finding, but then is asked to perform another job. It seems that the 4th person, Jace, was in a prison and they wanted Travis to break him out.
Travis and Jace return to the 2nd safe house where they are given an assignment to locate a drone. It seems that this drone was stolen from a secret weapons facility in Mexico. They have also been told that there is some plan in place for a terrorist attack in the U.S., but the location is not known.
Read along and follow the clues as Jace and Travis pursue the terrorist. Discover who the eventually meet up with and learn additional information.
To discover how Travis freed Jace, who was responsible for the theft, who else helped Jace and Travis in their pursuit, then you need to read this book. The ending is well worth it and you won't be disappointed.
Travis becomes key to avoiding nuclear disaster as he helps the CIA - 4 stars
While Travis Bishop retired from the CIA to train horses, some agents don't get to retire. Travis received a call from the director of the CIA pleading for help to look for four missing agents; some retirement plans never saw the light of day. Travis wound up in France and briefly in a French prison.
There is no shortage of adventure as Travis is further pressured to investigate the fallout from a traitor who worked at a very high level of government. Chechen freedom fighters, backed by a multibillionaire, steal an off-the-books weapon that the United States promptly lost the ability to track.
Many people who intensely disliked the United States were dedicated to staging an international incident. However, one unusual twist had a Balkan agent who was motivated for revenge against her former comrades who had recently tried to kill her.
Most of the CIA field agents were able to self-direct with few exceptions. The bad guys were depicted as showing an autocratic leadership style. When the enemies of the United States ran into operational problems with their carefully thought-out plans, their failure to cooperate when last-minute changes were needed was a disadvantage.
The family of one CIA agent, Jace, seemed to be aware of the business of the CIA; they did a great job of maintaining heightened situational awareness to stay alive.
Travis Bishop is a reluctant hero. Since leaving the employee of the CIA he simply wants to enjoy his retirement dream of training reining horses.
But the government doesn't see it the same way. To them, especially to Tom Stewart DirNSA, Bishop continues to be an exploitable asset. When a CIA safe house goes dark (incommunicado), Stewart calls on Travis to leave Italy and travel to France to check it out.
Little by little bishop is drawn into exposing a plot to permanently damage the USA along with destroying its reputation. The story moves from country to country until Travis finally finds himself in Washington, DC where everything comes to a climax.
The story is good, the pacing decent, the characters are well done, and the twists are both surprising and satisfying. Ms Kalis must have done a good bit of research, but there was one scene that was either unresearched or changed to make the story flow better. In either case, it is not a distraction unless you have some personal experience which I do.
I'm giving this book a four-star review because it is not my favorite Travis Bishop story. In fact all four previous Travis Bishop books were better in my opinion. Having said that, I think if this were my first exposure to K.J. Kalis, I would have given the book 5 stars.
I enjoy this series so much. The characters are relatable but also larger than life. The action is non-stop and the political intrigue keeps me wondering what will happen on each and every page. This story sees the main character, Travis Bishop who no longer works for the CIA, being pulled away from his much anticipated trip to Spain to perform a “personal favor” for the Director of the CIA, Tom Stewart. As it turns out, there are no small favors when dealing with the CIA. What was supposed to be a quick one day surveillance op blossoms into a full-scale mission to save the United States from a devastating terrorist attack that would change the course of history. The pace is relentless, the tension is palpable and the gut-wrenching climax had me grinding my teeth as I read. This nail-biting thriller is quite a ride! I can’t wait for the next one.

Lost Target by KJ Kalis Travis Bishop Thrillers Book Five Travis Bishop finds himself doing another job for the CIA. Why can’t they leave him alone? He wants to be on his ranch, training horses. Or, like he was doing before he got the call, enjoying watching and learning from an Italian trainer. Now, he finds himself in France. And when he figured he’d fulfilled what they asked of him…oh, no. There was more. It is heart-pumping as the fast-paced story has Travis on a dangerous rescue. And, when he finally hits US soil again and thinks he’s done…his country still needs him. The President trusts him and personally asks him to see this job through. Sometimes you just can’t retire. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters, as harrowing as it sometimes gets. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
OMG this book was absolutely amazing and I loved it. It was addicted and it was a page turner and the suspense OH NO!!! I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn't even imagine of put it down. Travis had to come out of the darkness of his life to proved what was going on or was something was be hacked by the enemies. Or will there be another territory attack again. Travis had to find what was going on and who life was in danger some he had to go under protector service with CIA agencies. Will they find out the find out the truth before it is too late will everything get back on track with Travis help. I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed. Travis is in Italy hoping to learn things that will help him with his horse ranch. He is asked to do a favor for the CIA Director. He was asked to check on a safe house even though he was no longer with the CIA. The director said he was the closest asset in the region. When he gets to the safe house he finds three people in the house and all dead. All of their phones and computers are gone. He goes to report in and instead of being able to continue his trip he is pulled farther in. He is told to rescue the fourth member who escaped and was now in prison.
This is a very entertaining and exciting book. It will get your attention and keep it. You won't be able to put it down until you have read it all.
OMG this book was absolutely rubbish. OH NO!!! he used "hunker down" again. I was on the edge of my seat to see if he would set a record.
And, meanwhile back in fantasy land, the finale was the quickest wham, bam, thank you ma'am on record.
When I started reading this I thought it was a joke. It read as if it had been written by a high school student. It didn't improve the further I went.
Did I tell you about the ending. Don't even get me started about the dog.
I have suffered so you won't have to - but even if you received a free copy and feel obliged to at least start it - sitting in a chair on a railroad track is your best option.
if the last book was good this one is even better. Combining characters from various points in the main characters life makes this one hard to put down. Following both sides of the story until the end also makes this book one that you just cannot put down. Using the Washington DC area as the target kind of makes you wonder what would happen if this was for real. Including an ending that makes you try to imagine where the next book will take us and who might be in that book is even more special Don't miss this one!!!.

I almost gave up reading this book 1/4 in. I thought "I don't want to read a book about the challenge of being a prisoner in a chaotic French prison. Then Travis went in to rescue the CIA agent--now there would be two people being abused and attracting/deflecting trouble. I've watched too many TV shows about that stuff. Boring. So I skipped to book 6 and early on there were slight references to the story of Book 5 that sounded intriguing. So I immediately went back to book 5 and read it. Glad I did. Book 5 was nothing about prison life in France and returned to other more interesting things.
A Chechen terrorist is threatening the US with a disaster larger than 911. Travis Bishop gets taken out of retirement for a simple task that turns into stopping this terrorist threat.
I have read a lot of this author's work but this was my first Travis Bishop book. It reads really well as a stand alone.
There is lots of action that will keep you turning the pages in this race against the clock.
Travis keeps trying to quit the CIA and live in peace, raise his horses but they just won’t leave him be. What seems like a simple favor for the director turns into a hunt of epic proportions and a small team Travis included trying to stop an unprecedented attack. The plot is intricate, the details are amazing, the action heart pounding edge of your seat. Travis may be an unwilling participant but he’s an amazing hero who never fails to take the reader on an unreal adventure!.

Travis is again sought by the FBI to help find a group of agents that have gone mute in Europe. From there he'll be sent back to the US at the President's request to curb a major terrorist attack. This story is full of action, unexpected twists and turns, and new friendships found among new people that show up in his life. Easy to read and entertaining!

Travis Bishop, a retired CIA operative, simply wants to spend his retirement on his horse racing farm in Italy. But no, duty calls again! It starts out with a simple request to check a safe house in France and balloons into a potential global catastrophe featuring Chechens and nuclear weapons. This is a decent thriller that keeps you occupied from start to finish.

Perhaps the most interesting of the Travis Bishop books so far, its main flaw (like the other books) is that it ends too soon. The ending is just too simple for a very complex story. The author unnecessarily invents airline flights from Europe to LaGuardia Airport in New York; and the story depends on a non-existent railroad route, a distracting use of literary license.
A very gripping story in the Travis Bishop series with literally non-stop action from beginning to end. The twists and turns in the storyline keep you thinking thoughout about what comes next. It is very much a story related to the very complicated world in which we live and how far people will go to have the world shaped their way.
Life gets really complicated for Travis Bishop in short order. Events cascade, one leading to the next as the Chechyans try to exert their will by attacking America. This is a very involved story that has Travis using all of his skills and experience to help save our country. A great effort from KJ Kalis
Travis Bishop is called in by the CIA when a safe house fails to report in. What he finds is just the beginning of a frantic search for Chechen terrorists who have stolen a stare of the art drone with a terrifying payload.
Great plot, a lovable lead character and an engaging supporting cast topped off by a bad guy you can boo and hiss at.

I think Travis just needs to accept the fact once CIA always CIA. Kind of like being a marine, once a marine forever a marine. I like these books but I really enjoy the stories about the horses. Unfortunately sometimes there is just not enough horse in the story.
A book that was hopefully written for and aimed at a young teen or pre-teen audience. The writing is quite juvenile, the plot is unrealistic and not credible. A book I was glad to finish in order to be done with it.
This is cracking thriller, with something going on from the first page to the last. Twists and turns all over the place. I just couldn’t put it down. I loved it. Travis is one hell of a badass that’s for sure. What on earth is going to happen next, I cannot wait to find out. Highly recommended.
This is another good Travis Bishop thriller where he thought that he was on a research trip in Europe and he got sucked back into helping the CIA with a plot to cause destruction on a massive scale in the USA. As usual from this author a nicely paced well written thriller.
Ripped from the headlines plot with drones, terrorist hackers, and an attack on the Capital. Needs some better editing for grammar and sentence structure but a solid tale, well written
WOW what a story. Action from start to finish. An edge of the seat page turner. I know this was fiction, but so much of the story could be fact, frightening.
This was a twisted and yet believable plot to overturn the US. Travis right in the thick of things again. Kept me turning the page trying to find out if Travis is on time to save the President and the country he loves. Great series of books, hoping KJ writes another with Jace in it, I think they will be friends, just what Travis needs
