Real quick for those who are it is a LitRPG/Gamelit story. No, it will not be a harem, but it will have a bit of bigamy in it. Yes, my wife/coauthor who can’t stand harem has agreed with how it’s done. No, we didn’t write any naughty fun time scenes, in this or anything that I write. Yes, there is adventure. No, it’s not another VR adventure. And finally, yes, there are zombie chickens! So, welcome to Role-Playing Gamified Earth, if you survive that is...
As a child I did not read unless Pokémon cards count. It wasn’t until middle school when my mother played a trick on me, she got me entranced in the Harry Potter books. She would read the first few to me before switching to reading me a chapter and leaving the book out for me to read if I wanted more. Thus started my love of reading, at least in part. I still didn’t go out of my way to find books to read and after high school I could count on one hand how many books I would read each year. Life continued like this for over five years before I was hooked on an anime and searched out its light novel. This led to the phase where I was reading at least a couple books a month to now where I have gone through over 300 books in the last year.
Now I am putting my own work in to the world while following my own mantra. To write for yourself or you will never love what you write. When I first started to put my ideas into words I was surprised to find that those I shared it with loved it. This led me on to the road of putting out my own book for the world to see. Thank you to everyone who has or will help and support me in making this dream a reality.
A system apocalypse with a fantasy RPG feel. Not exactly an original premise, but I gave it a shot anyway. Unfortunately, I came to regret that. It's not just that the author(s) crib wholesale from an existing game system (you know it's bad when I'm only trying to decide if it's actual Pathfinder or just generic D&D 3.0. it's worse when you suspect that it is being careful to leave ambiguity to have plausible deniability if called out/sued).
The thing about knowing the game system so well is that I disagree with a lot of his choices and hate his attitude towards other people. Oh, and also, I'd hate gaming with this guy. Who doesn't feel like naming their character until fifth level, let alone giving them a backstory? And his excuse is that they're too fragile and might die before they get that far? Yeah, that's someone who isn't gaming for the same reasons I am. Sure, I'm a shameless power fantasy dork, but even I find it uninteresting to just play a stat block for however long it takes to get to the "magic" level 5.
Also, if you can't keep a level two character alive in a normal, non-psychopathic GM campaign then might I suggest that the problem isn't the game? I'm just saying...
Anyway, I don't like the protagonist. And the post apocalyptic world seems kind of boring. Seriously, who does world building and thinks "let's have the world end and have the world be made into a straight-up D&D system 2½ generations back and then throw lots of undead at everybody"? Boring people. That's who. One star. You could do better campaign design with random tables even before you tap into an AI for ideas...
Promising start to a new series by an excellent author!
I love Eternal Dominion (the author's previous, in progress series) and it's great to have a new story with the same great style to start reading. Plus, this new one promises to be a bit more accessible with a smaller number of total books. (I love the long series length, but it makes it tougher to get new people interested...). Further, I love the main character's choice of cleric as a class. It's my personal favorite, and one that I feel doesn't get enough of a positive reputation in writing, and it's great to see it work out so well while some choices made by others, well... Don't.
In short, the start of a fun new adventure by a great husband and wife author team. Highly recommended!
I've enjoyed the eternal dominion series quite a bit, so I was looking forward to this new series.
Its a pretty good upgrade in writing skill and storytelling from the author. Its not perfect, but it is an enthralling read and what problems there are seem rather minor compared to the enjoyment I got from it.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone that enjoys the lit rpg style books, and I'm a big fan of the choice to focus on the pantheon of gods and making the main character a cleric. I do feel like he's a bit thinner on the characterization for some of the characters compared to his first series, but it is only the first book and I expect many of them to grow as time goes on.
I could not put it down. Great story line. Great characters. Great application of ‘random dice rolls’. This is not a harem novel (like his main series which is also amazing) but it applies the main reason I enjoy harem novels. The collecting of powerful friends and allies to defeat the bad guys without manufactured drama.
Jason leaves his home city to get to a more protectable area and collects friends and strangers along the way becoming stronger and leveling up those that have put their faith in him and his deity.
I very much enjoyed reading this book. While it is a variant of the RPG apocalypse, it's well written, the characters are relatable, and its a fun read. I wish it was longer, and while I was initially upset that the main story ended approximately 3/4 of the way through the book, the additional side story way the end was honestly even better than the main story.
I enjoyed this story quite a lot. Gaming novels have always had a place in my collection, and this one fits right in. Post apocalyptic stories and games are fun, combing D&D with a zombie apocalypse seems to work well so far. I am curious how the faith aspect will play out in the long run. Will the pantheons of old still apply or new ones start up? And Bern really seems to like Freya.
Ok so the book is good. Its well written and the pacing keeps things interesting. However I'm really just not a huge fan of the story itself so far. I will read the next if there is one but I really think the authors other series is head and shoulders above this one.
Interesting concept that covers why, even though the setting is earth, things don't work right unless it's part of the change. I really want to see how the author is going to make a new city and see how to work under the new rules of the world!
Very enjoyable start to a new series. Does have some similarities to Bern’s other work but it is well done. Overall I think it is a great start and enjoyed the addition of another perspective at the end of the book. Look forward to the next one!
Really like the faith part of this world. It is an interesting take for litrpg. Also, it is kind of like the fact that it is two stories. Like the fact that they were presented as two stories instead of one and switching back and forth.
This is a good start to a new series for an author who does a great job making the reader apart of the world. Well written and good character development. I look forward to future books in the series
This is an interesting new book series. I look forward to seeing how the author takes this new book series. However, I think I still prefer his other book series, eternal dominion.
If you enjoyed the D&D method of rolling 4 d 6, and keeping the top 3 for stats, and the 3.5 edition of D&D, I expect you will find this book entertaining. I cant wait for whats next.
While I did enjoy this book it has a few problems in my opinion. The main story just stops at 74%. It wasn't even a decent stopping point, again just my opinion. The rest is taken up by a novella that again just stops. Other then the mistakes I found and the odd stopping points I did enjoy both. Mistakes will be up on Goodreads.
So I give 5 stars automatically if I can finish the book. You wrote, I read it, and I generally want to support writers. Now on to my review…this book is a dystopian fantasy litRPG that does not feel fun. Disturbing, randomly violent, and not terribly enjoyable describes this novel well. The premise is an over powered MC who manages to get perfect stats during the hostile takeover of the earth and his struggle to form a party and survive the chaos. Why is there a hostile takeover…who cares. Reasons. The MC (although having gained genius level intelligence and wisdom) is mostly reactionary and socially awkward. The book tells you that he is likable, easy going and generally popular but I am hard pressed to understand why. Oh and he is also very attractive according to two sisters he teams up with early on. (Side note if any of you have read Bern Dean. Having the MC be randomly fought over by multitudes of women is not new.) The MC chooses cleric and never looks back even if it means he is basically a cult leader in the making. He manages to keep his initial party alive for about 16 hrs before he gets his two friends killed by zombie poultry. The MC’s plan that gets his friends killed by the way is to send them into a zombie infested building, make noise, and draw out the zombies so he can use his cleric powers to turn the undead. This is the plan of a genius??? Not only is this a crappy plan but he also sends in his two friends that he already knows are compromised by the system due to the fact that they rolled badly during the system and have below average intelligence. His friends get zombie swarmed and die but it is somehow their fault. Not the genius who came up with the plan and led his brain damaged friends to slaughter. Yikes. But don’t worry, the sisters that totally wanna sleep him, manage to absolve him of blame. Oh and the sister that hasn’t joined his cult yet gets criticized for not having the blind zealotry that the other sister has. So the MC has parents. Does he care about them? Not as far as I can tell. When this system apocalypse occurs he just says they are at work and never attempts to find them. He just finds 4 friends in his surrounding neighborhood and says they need to leave the city ASAP. Were his parents neglectful or abusive? We don’t know. We have no evidence to support that they were awful or wonderful but they may have raised a sociopath because he is completely unconcerned about what happened to them. It only gets more problematic and very culty. This is not a light hearted romp, and I think the lack of empathy and depth of characters only adds to the bleakness of the novel. This setting is not enjoyable, the characters are not engaging, and the system mechanics are not unique. It is very much a D&D rip off in post apocalyptic setting. Very disappointed so far.
I have to say you have a great story and I hope you continue with the upheaval series. I found the choice of gods to be appropriate, I enjoyed the progression of the clerics and found his conviction to be a rare path. Making hard calls and following thru, is a very interesting path.I think I am looking forward to the city being built and the growth of his small thruple.lol I like that you are using the d&d style of rpg .A think the kitsu is a fabulous charter but her knowledge of spells is hit and miss for me but I love the charter and want to see more in the future. I find you and your wife's writing to be enjoyable and I can put your books down.I recommend you to my friends and they enjoy your hard work also. Keep up th great work and thanks for the entertainment.
It's not a bad story, but neither is it great. It feels all together very flat and unexciting. The main character, Jason, just sort of sleepwalks his way through this whole thing. He's never happy. He's never sad. He's never angry. He just sort of wanders through all of these events. And yet, as boring as this guy is, he still has two sisters throwing themselves at him, competing for his love. So they're either very desperate, or they just don't care that this guy has zero personality.
It's hard to explain, but this felt more like reading a documentary than an adventure book. And then only 75% of this book is actually the main story. After that it cuts to some side stories in surrounding areas that don't deal with the main story arc.
First series that I've personally read that deals with undead (i.e. skeletons & zombies), which is not my normal thing. But I really enjoyed it. Since I have enjoyed several books by Mr. Dean in the past, I decided to pick up all four books available in the series (as of 06/06/2025). Having chosen Freya as one of my cleric character's goddess when I played AD&D in the distant past, I enjoyed being presented this interpretation of her godhood. The story was enjoyable and kept my interest throughout.
I like how his character has the ability to do the job without 20 pages of moaning and crying about how he didn't even know the person's name. This is awesome become he literally refuses to know their name. Main Character is doing intelligent decisions and not ego driven. Love the zombie chickens! The bonus character story at the end was hilarious. Her trying to hit the skeleton from the broomstick was awesome!
Since I am a D&D player I understand most of what's going on And if I had to wake up and roll like that I'm not sure how well I do But I love reading reading the book going to get started on But I love reading the book going to get started on books as soon as I can get my hand on it Keep up the good work More More from you from Hearing more from youyou.
I've been reading a lot of this genre lately, and this story is enjoyable while at the same time being pretty unique. Was a little sad that I had to wait until April for the next installment, but that's OK since at least I know there is more coming.
Definitely read if you like litrpg and have ever enjoyed DnD.
I dislike OP MC and Harem stories. Just not my thing. This feels like it's written for fans of both who don't want to admit they like them by a writer who doesn't want to admit to having enjoyed writing them.
That said there is enough going for it to keep my story addicted self going during a dry spell.
I have enjoyed all of your books and was ready for a new story from you. I enjoy the new world and the whole Gods aspect. The undead and the whole evolution of creatures makes it interesting too. Looking forward to the next book!!
