This was a good addition to the series, and I like Ramirez' books with Heather Kilgore. Sparrow is also a good character. Kilgore was put in a very difficult position, and it was interesting to see how she extracted herself from the situation. I'm looking forward to the third book.
Even though I liked this book, I've got a few complaints about it. The prologue was completely unnecessary. Having that at the beginning did nothing for the book, other than add a few pages. This is a technique that has been used -- *very* overused -- in TV. It was effective the first five times, but is now just a stand-in for good writing. At this point, if a TV episode starts with a really intense or exciting scene, my wife and I start speculating how far in the past the episode's actual start will be. "2 Days Ago"? "9 Hours Earlier"? Ramirez is a much better writer, and I was really sorry to see he used this stale technique to start this book.
There were three short chapters in the "Interlude - Flashbacks" section. The stuff included in those chapters really should have been included in the appropriate earlier chapters. Using those three chapters was unnecessary and the book wasn't improved by hiding that information until that point. To avoid giving away the reveals in the flashback sections, the earlier chapters ended up having awkward sections to account for the flashbacks. Again, Ramirez is a much better writer than to need this trite trick.
