A poignant and deeply relevant masterpiece. While the war in Syria happened years ago, it begs the question of the future of our world when we constantly see war as necessary for capitalism to function and black/brown bodies as expendable. This book reminds us of history (not too long ago) that we are now seeing repeated in real time. Kassir reminds us of the individual important lives of her people, her own family members, and why we must care about the cost of war no matter where and to whom. This book makes me want to immediately build a reading list on the war in Syria and learn more. Kassir seeks to preserve these forgotten stories, and absolutely succeeds.

A brutal yet beautiful collection charting the tragedy that is modern day Syria. It's hard to imagine the sheer destruction and cruelty that one man and his regime can inflict on their own people, but justice will win through in the end, and each will be given their due - either in this world or the next. This book is an experience that must be read through in order, difficult as it is, until the final, hopeful conclusion which Amal masterfully crafts, reminding us of the bright future which the next generations will build.
