This a brilliant read about a little known raid on the Low Countries days after the fabled 1st Schweinfurt and Regensburg sorties.

The author charts the action of not only several 8th Air Force groups but also the supporting strikes from several RAF units as well.

Ivo de Jong does a good job of showing the reader the role of medium bombers and strike aircraft in drawing Luftwaffe attention away from the selected target of the day for the heavies. Also, he gives several eyewitness accounts from both German participants and Dutch civilians involved in the August 19th episode.

This is a quick read and reminds the reader that in reality, no one mission over enemy occupied territory should ever be taken lightly. The “milk run” of August 19th, 1943 was anything but. Highly recommend.
