Saki's confusion about her feelings for Kanon only deepens when Kanon ends up spending the night due to a situation at home. As the two girls are lying in bed facing each other, Kanon tells Saki about her conflicting dreams for the she wants to live on her own someday, but she also wants someone around whom she can count on-someone like Saki. Kanon drifts off to sleep, but Saki remains awake long into the night, wrestling with the turmoil within her. All she knows is that she can't go on like this much longer...
Why do you need someone LIKE me when you have me right here?!
Saki and Kanon continue to be the best of friends, but Saki’s feeling incredibly conflicted about it for some reason. Between sleepovers and wise stylists and everybody’s past coming back, it’s Saki’s time to deal with a lot of things all at once.
This is the volume where this series tipped over to fantastic from really good. Sometimes the writing feels a little off to me for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, but this gets so much right that it’s hard to complain about it.
Yuri that deals with queerness is one of those things I always appreciate and we get the big revelation this volume that Saki is absolutely closeted to hell and back and she’s really struggling with it. Especially because she thinks being honest will cost her her best friend.
Saki ends up having Kanon sleep over because of a situation, not necessarily a bad one, at Kanon’s home and the undercurrent of terror and self-torment is expressed so wonderfully that it’s this close to being heart wrenching.
This comes after a hair adventure that cutely pivots from what you expect is about to happen in the most cliche way possible into a real bonding moment when somebody recognizes a lot of themselves in Saki and extends a hand that she doesn’t quite know she needs yet.
Minus some really fun stuff with Kanon’s dad, Kanon is definitely a life goal more than a character this time out, which is actually a bonus. Kanon is great, but Saki hasn’t had as much of the spotlight and boy does that turn out fantastically this volume.
Saki is incredibly sympathetic - scared of her own feelings, having been forced to deal with what sure looks like homophobia in the past, and petrified that she’s feeling things that Kanon never will (although my guess is that Kanon’s own backstory as about to be revealed will put the lie to that).
And it doesn’t help that Kanon’s actions could be read as either incredibly flirty (the lip reading in bed is something else) or just super friendly because this is a girl that Kanon just gets along super well with.
We see during conversations with both Kanon’s dad and Rinne that Kanon has changed in really positive ways with Saki and thinks a ton about her, but what does that mean? The uncertainty and anxiety that weighs on Saki is conveyed note perfect.
Brutally emotional and delightfully revelatory, the decision to focus on Saki and reveal so much about her this volume really brings her into her own and it also throws a light on a problem that the story is taking pains to look at - because Kanon has such a rough time compared to most people because of her hearing, where do the problems of the people she’s close to fit in?
That’s a hell of a question for a piece of schoolgirl yuri and I’m glad that this is shaping up to be much more than just that. There’s some real emotional heft here that’s making smarter moves than I admit I was initially expecting from it.
4.5 stars - some of it still feels a bit stiff, but man do I love the dilemmas and complexities in this volume, which pile on the other stuff to just make one huge mess that I’m excited to see the outcome of when it gets untangled.
Well, that was quite melancholic at the end again (which was both great and not), but overall this volume had much more of a sad vibe.
Saki still is effected by what Rinne said, and at the same time also by her past. There isn't much revealed yet, but from what is teased, it's possible Saki had a crush on a girl before and it didn't end well. With homophobia/heteronormativity involved.
Like I said, I do love melancholy (like in the last chapter of this volume), but not when it becomes overly sad. Not even in a depressing way, but more in a "why does society have to be so close-minded" way. And at some point that can get a bit annoying, so 4 stars again.
The author and artist do overall a great job in portraying these heavy matters. I'm just not a fan of homophobia, especially when it started out relatively positive... and considering it came out in 2022. I will keep reading though.
how does this manga series keep getting better and better with each volume it's UNREAL 😭 i really liked this saki-focused volume; her feelings are so pure and genuine. i deeply adore her ❤️
The volume revolves around Saki struggling with her feelings for Kanon. My one complaint about the volume is that I'm put off by how Akira is introduced to the story. It feels shoehorned in.
After reading Volume 2, I wrote in my review that I felt like the pace had become much slower, but this volume picked it up for the best! On a side note, how are all the characters in this series so drop dead gorgeous? The drawings often make my jaw drop.
The two girls are getting closer to one another while their friendship grows stronger, leaving Saki quite distraught. I actually like how naive and innocent she is. She doesn’t know how to deal with what she’s feeling, though she tries her best to be a listening ear for Kanon.
I once again really enjoyed getting to know more about Kanon’s family, with the introduction of her dad and former friend. I can’t believe the volume ended on such a cliffhanger, considering I now have to wait 2 more months for the release of the next volume… *sigh* but in any case, I hope we’ll get to learn more about Saki’s background soon, too. What is the secret she so fiercely keeps from Kanon? Does this have to do with her feelings? Has Saki already fallen for a friend of hers before?
Overall, this volume had a beautiful and heartwarming undertone, reminding us that love knows no gender, and that pain is always part of the equation.
This series is just too good, I must read it online now that I’m caught up with my printed editions.
Also, I fell off the face of the earth for a bit because I could only resist the Stardew Valley update for four days and then I caved and played for 10+ hours everyday this week oops.
Woke up with this book on my mind, couldn't stop myself. The haircut scene, the sleepover, the meeting with Ayano?? Oh. My. GOSH!! It all comes together so perfectly 😭
26/02/2025 2.75 ⭐ Yeah... so I think I'm going to have to take a pause on this series for now. I was bored for most of this and then the ending put a bad taste in my mouth. Like, I'm so sorry that knowing a deaf person made your life hard but maybe get over yourself and don't blame everything on her??? Yeah, it's not the storyline for me.
Many manga does the trope of a friend coming over to your place and they get to be in your personal space and this volume captures it well especially with the cover art. As the reader, you can clearly recognise the innocence and uncertainty of our protagonist as Saki can only attempt to sort out her feelings for Kanon and the conversation beginning and ending on a cliffhanger at the end of the volume is melancholic between her and Ayano was necessary to not only move forward the plot in understanding the past of Kanon, but provide insight to the reason why her previous friend ended up hurting her despite their close nature. I'm enjoying the read.

4 stars. The ending was so abrupt and rude! What the hell? I need volume four immediately! Saki and her gay panic, Saki and Kanon having a sleep over with only one bed, meeting Kanon’s dad, and other big things happened. There was a lot packed into this volume and I loved it. This series is just so damn good and I adore it so much.
Slow burn Yuri romance that focuses on the difficulties of being disabled and building relationships between disabled and non-disabled people. Additionally an interesting portrayal of the struggle of internalized homophobia and the difficult process of coming out. Beautiful art & well written dialogue with well developed characters. A flagship of the Genre.
I really appreciate this series. It's been taking its time. Diving into some background characters this volume which was interesting to get perspective from. I'm excited for volume 4.
