An absolutely gripping psychological thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists that will keep you glued to your Kindle until late into the night. Perfect for fans of Behind Closed Doors, The Perfect Marriage and anything by Gillian Flynn, Claire McGowan or Nicola Sanders.
Melanie Price is the author of The Mother-in-Law's Secret and My Perfect Family. She grew up in Sydney but now lives in London. All of her books explore the intricacies of living between Australia and the United Kingdom – with twists and turns galore. The Mother-in-Law's Secret is her debut novel.
I have read another book by this author and I gave it 3* as I didn’t hate it and it was inoffensive. But this book just had nothing going for it start to end, no real story or interesting parts and no real suspense. I won’t be reading another book by this author
What a jaw dropping book! This storyline gripped me early on, it has everything from love to lies, twists and turns, family issues, lost lives and more. This story seems genuine, a house on the cliff side, a tragic event. A murder? An accident? How did it happen?
Emily is on a mission to find out what happened to her mum, she uncovers a can of worms with some leads, but all is not what it seems! Her gut instinct is on overdrive, is there anyone she can trust? I love how you think you know who or why then something happens to blow all your theories up again! I love Emily and her personality, Ben is a loveable character too and even though his job as a policeman warrants empathy etc, he has history with Emily that shows he cares about her and her wellbeing.
I really enjoyed this book and once I started, I was hooked and wanted to know what was going to happen!
It was so well written and I already have another of Melanie's books to get stuck into, cannot wait!
Whew! This was one that was a bookubus (you know. A book that sucks the life out of you like a succubus until you are done. It’s totally a word now, deal with it) for me. It opens up with a suspicious death and everyone seems to not be telling the truth to the cops. But our main character is a BA daughter, and is going to figure out what happened, even if she was somehow involved. I was suspicious of absolutely everyone and I honestly disliked most every character. This is kind of reminiscent of Soul Mate by Sally Hepworth, but I loved this one so much more. Overall, a great thriller.
Emily is back in Australia for a bit and promised to stay at her mom’s for the second part. It would be an issue except for the whole blow up between her and her stepfamily a year ago. But before she can move from her hotel to the house, her mom is found dead. The police think it’s an accident, but Emily knows it’s not. Her gut tells her, and everyone is hiding something from the police. Including herself. Because she was supposed to meet her mom last night, but was blackout drunk. And she woke up covered in blood and can only remember a scream.
Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.
I was instantly intrigued with this book after reading the blurb and knew it was one I was going to enjoy! Also the front cover was very appealing to me…
I felt this book was very fast paced and opened up into the action straight away from the first chapter! Her mother was dead, but how? Why? Who did it!? I do love a good murder mystery and this psychological thriller definitely hit all the right spots. Some brilliant twists and turns throughout that kept me guessing right till the end! There were a few little twists that I managed to piece together myself before the revelations but it didn’t take away from the quality of the twist. Then came the shocking ending which I did not see coming at all… I love that!
Disclaimer: I read this book in less than 24hrs because I could not put it down! The chapters were nice and short too which I love in a book! Very easy to read.
Another well written book by Melanie Price, I will definitely be adding your name to my automatic buy list for your future books!
Having read and reviewed The Mother-In-Law's Secret at the end of last year, and loving it, I was really looking forward to some more secrets and lies by this author.
I love the way that this one starts with a bang - the tragedy of Suzannah's death and the fact that Emily, although covered in bruises, cannot remember anything about the event! She's certain she wouldn't hurt her mother - but what happened to her and who else could have done this!?
This was fast paced right from the get go and the short chapters and exciting writing style really helped to build up the tension and suspense throughout the book. I was completely immersed and raced through this one desperate to find out what had actually happened.
I liked that we started at the end, so to speak, with the death - then worked out way from before and back up to date to follow the events of how we got to this point.
I found the characters to be pretty relatable and I really felt for Emily and the struggles of the past, fitting in, and now coming back to this. I really wanted things to work out for her.
This was packed with twists and turns! I had no clue what had happened and who to trust right up until the full reveal.
A great read and I can't wait to see what we'll be treated to in Price's next book.
3.5 stars. I did really enjoy this book but I cannot claim it was a high calibre piece of literature. Just a pretty gripping thriller that I didn’t completely guess even despite being suspicious of every single character.
A digital copy of this book was provided to me by Love Book Tours. The opinions are my own and freely given.
30-year-old Emily gets a call one morning from her aunt telling her that her mother is dead. The problem is, Emily can't remember the events of the night before.
Emily's father disappeared a long time ago and her mother remarried Glenn. Glenn and Emily never really got along. Glenn's daughter Zara and Emily were thick as thieves until Zara betrayed her. Since then, Emily has distanced herself from the family. Her mother just wants everyone to get along. Now, her mother is dead and although everyone said it was an accident, Emily knows her mother and believes there is something more going on. Emily starts looking into the "accident". She reconnects with her ex-boyfriend, who is now with the police and in charge of the investigation.
I liked this book. It kept me fluctuating between several different characters throughout the story as to who could be guilty, if indeed this wasn't an accident. Once I was able to rule out one person, another one crept into line to take his/her place. Everyone seems suspicious (every Emily's best friend) and everyone is hiding something for one reason or another. Chapters were short (which I LOVE). I thought this was very well written and a fast-paced read.
As soon as I read the blurb I knew I needed to read this book!… I do love a good mystery/thriller.
From the very first chapter I was instantly pulled in to the mystery and @melaniepricebooks fast paced writing style. The chapters were short and engaging- each either changing your opinion or revealing something interesting. I devoured this book in one day!!
The big twist at the end got me good!! I really wasn’t expecting it! Brilliant book highly recommend! Will definitely be looking out for @melaniepricebooks future novels!
A gripping, fast paced thriller, filled with twists and turns and an ending that will shock you!
'Because what sort of person might have accidentally killed their mother, but can't even remember it?'.
Emily wakes up after a night out, not remembering how she got there, or why she's covered in bruises. But then she gets a phone call that changes everything - her mum has been found deceased after an accidental fall. Did Emily do it? Why can't she remember anything?
Emily sets out on a mission to uncover what really happened to her mum, knowing she would never get too close to the cliffs. But this investigation may turn deadly.
𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Right from the beginning we're plunged into mystery and suspicious behaviours from Emily's family members. All of the red herrings that you think could have been correct leads you to a raft of twists.
The ending had me completely shocked and just what I love to see in thriller books, something that you just don't see coming.
As a side plot, I really enjoyed the relationship growing between Emily and Ben and was so happy for Emily that she got a good thing out of this whole scenario.
Thank you to Love Books Tours for this copy. This review is voluntary.
‘My Perfect Family’ is a right ripper of a thriller that will keep any reader on their toes! Melanie Price definitely knows how to write a compelling and exciting thriller. I had previously read ‘The Mother-in-Law’s Secret’ and loved it, so I was looking forward to picking this one up! I was not disappointed. Melanie’s books are stand-alone’s so you can embrace any of them as a new reader, but once you read one you will need to pick up the rest!
When Emily is told that their mother has died she just doesn’t believe it! She had only just meet her for lunch and was planning on meeting up with her later that night. But Emily got so drunk that she has flitting memories of that night and even believes that she might have sometimes to do with the accident. All of her family is being weird and Emily begins to question them and their motivations. Will Emily work out the truth?
I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in one day. It’s fast paced and pithy and you keep thinking ‘just one more chapter’ and then realise you have finished the book and it's hours later! This one really does have it all - tragedy, love, lies, weird family dynamics and plenty of twists and turns! Did I guess the resolution - no I didn't! It was a ‘pick your jaw off the floor’ moment!
The main character of Emily was someone you could root for right from the start. She is intelligent and feisty if a little bit naive at times. But she was determined to find out the truth and her emotions and reactions felt very authentic. Losing a parent is horrific and people react in so many different ways but Emily’s felt real and you felt all the trauma she was going through.
This was a compelling and fast-paced read domestic thriller, that is packed full of tension and great writing!
Here is my review for My Perfect Family by Melanie Price
I got into this book straight away and found it to be an enjoyable psychological read. It kept me guessing the entire way through and was full of twists and turns with Emily trying to work out who could have killed her mum as she didn’t believe it was an accident. At some points she even suspected herself! She had been out drinking the night before and can’t remember her movements from that evening. Emily even suspects Glenn and Mike although they have been given alibi’s. The plotting is good and it’s great writing with lovely language describing everything. It is set in Sydney, Australia.
Blurb :
My mother is dead. I think I killed her.
Growing up, I tried to fit into my mother’s picture-perfect life when she married Glenn. But I couldn’t compete with my stepsister Zara’s bright blue eyes and sparkling smile. The straight-A student and model daughter. My mother’s new favourite…
As soon as possible, I ran away to start again. But now, I've returned home to make amends. I'd hoped we could finally become the family she always dreamed of. Instead, I wake to a nightmare.
My mother has been found dead after an accident. And I can’t remember where I was last night. But I’m covered in bruises and have hazy memories of a terrible scream…
Then I come face to face with my stepfamily for the first time in over a year and I realise one thing for certain: it wasn’t just an “accident”. One of them wanted her dead. But why, and who could have gone this far?
All I know is that I can't trust a single person in this family of mine. And whatever the answer I won't stop until I discover the truth. Because each of us has a secret. Every one of us is a suspect. Even me…
After a year of working in London, Emily decides it’s time to go back home to Australia to see her family and friends. What should have been a nice family reunion ends up turning into her worst nightmare for Emily as her mum is found dead and no one believes her that she thinks there is more to her death.
You won’t know who to trust in this story. Everyone seems to be hiding something and I was feeling every bit as frustrated as Emily was in wanting to discover the truth. What should be a time of everyone pulling together, it seems to be driving them further apart. My mind kept changing in how I felt towards certain characters which added to all the drama.
Emily is juggling dealing with her grief as well as uncovering the truth. I started to fear for her safety the closer to it she became. There are so many red herrings that have you looking at the different characters and I just couldn’t make my mind up in what part they played in Susannah’s death, needless to say when it is revealed who was in fact behind it, mind blown!
My Perfect Family has a wonderful Australian backdrop as it’s setting which I loved. Along with the family drama the suspense was totally engrossing. This is only the second novel I have read by this author but she is fast becoming one of my favourites as the twists are without a doubt some of the best I have ever read. I didn’t even have the slightest inkling as to the real culprit so it came as a huge shock. The perfect example of a well written psychological thriller. Intense, shocking and soooo twisted!
" [...] What was it about this family that always made me descend into the old, chaotic and wild version of myself? [...]"
Wow! I am very impressed by Melanie Price's latest novel titled "My Perfect Family". This is an excellent psychological thriller with great twists that I didn't expect. After reading this book, your jaw drops and you want more. It's a very exciting psychological story. This novel is a tearjerker. The main character is a perfect character who is impossible not to like. She moves forward to find out what happened to her mom. There are plenty of suspects. Will she make enemies with her stubborn pursuit of truth? Is she in mortal danger? The main character is Emily Olsen. She is thirty years old and a lawyer. She's coming back from London to Sydney. Why did she return to her hometown? She has a stepfather and a half-sister, with whom she has no close contact. Were they behind her mother's tragic case? Or maybe it was the main character herself who contributed to this tragedy? There are many possibilities, but only one solution. Will you discover the truth before it is revealed? If you like psychological thrillers, "My Perfect Family" will be perfect for you. Here you will find fast-paced action, a good plot, an interesting heroine and unusual plot twists that turn everything upside down. Be careful with cliffs, they can be very dangerous and even deadly. After this book, I would love to read another book by Melanie Price. I hope it will be as suspenseful as this story.
You won't want to put this book down!! I am not surprised often - though writers today are doing it more often so I might have to stop saying that - but this author shocked me! I absolutely did not expect the the twist at the end. I read this in 24 hours and was glued to my reader needing to know what was going to happen.
The main character was a whip smart lawyer, experiencing one of the worst things most people ever do - grief. People do not understand the loss of a parent until they experience this monumental occasion. The author portrayed this loss well, and also portrayed the interactions the FMC had with others in the world around her.
The constant paranoia, slight disconnection, and overall desire for this to not be true was so raw and real. As a thriller, especially one dealing with parental loss, this book features a number of issues that individuals may find disturbing such as murder, death, grief, infertility, infidelity, SI, and more.
If you love a good domestic thriller with exciting twists and turns you will love this book! You can grab it today on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited!
When Emily receives the news of her mother’s passing, she’s in utter disbelief. They had just shared lunch together, and there were plans to reunite later that evening. However, the night turned blurry for Emily after one too many drinks, leaving her with only fleeting memories and a haunting suspicion that she may have played a part in the tragic accident. Amidst the odd behavior of her relatives, Emily’s doubts grow. She starts to probe into their actions and intentions, determined to uncover the reality. Can Emily piece together the fragments of that fateful night and discover the truth?
The writing skills of the author are flawless and I was engaged throughout the book without getting bored at all. I think it was a perfect read for me while having a cup of coffee. Through her Captivating writing style I could visualise the whole plot unfolding in front of my eyes. The book is full of twists and turns which will keep you on the edge.
I will definitely recommend this book to all the mystery and suspense lovers. Grab your copy today and you will definitely enjoy reading it as much as I did.
This blurb really draws you in to a book that sounds like it will be something of nightmares. Trying to be part of the perfect family, in the perfect way, and just when you think you got out, got away, a visit back turns everything on end and you are questioning everything and everyone. I couldn't wait to dive in and enjoy the book. Let's just say that the blurb led to a book that did not disappoint.
I really liked the build up and the way we were brought in to the story. We are showed a situation where anyone would feel isolated and always on edge, trying to always seek out the ever elusive perfection your mum desires. You are given a story that builds tension, some hatred and lots of motive, for anyone in the family.
The author does well to really build on all these heightened emotions and keep the tensions high. You are left with the accident and lots of possibilities of what happened, whether it was an accident and who may have been involved. The way the author took this and made an interesting guessing game to take us through the thriller was really good..overall, a good read that was really exciting.
I received a free epub of this book thanks to the publishers, as part of a book tour, for my honest opinion.
This is a quick thriller that really could be considered unputdownable, just because you want to know what happened.
The main character, Emily, wakes up with no remembrance of what happened the night before but gets a horrific phone call that her mother has died. Did she have something to do with it? Or are all of her memories melting into one due to her blackout? She is on a mission to figure out what happened to her mother, because she refused to accept that it was a horrible accident.
At first it does seem like Emily may be going through her own form of grief, because she does feel all over the place; especially with her emotions. I did appreciate how the writer keeps you guessing and has written this book in a way that makes you want to finish it. It is a super quick read, and if you're looking for a quick thriller to read in-between books this is definitely the book for you.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author. The opening chapter oh my, was Emily really responsible for her mother’s death? I’ve never had such a quick start to a book where you’re anxiety over why Emily can’t remember and what does and doesn’t make sense so soon. It’s only because of it being a psychological thriller that I knew it wouldn’t be that simple and that’s where the thrill for the next page takes form.
Like most psychological thrillers the secrets and lies start to format and you suspect multiple characters. It’s horrible when people make you feel that you’re thinking in a way you shouldn’t. I also have to take the moment to appreciate the references to Wales and singing in Welsh. Step sister has already betrayed Emily so who else will betray her? Could Ben be not all that he’s made up to be? Honestly my suspicions were peeking from the very beginning. You’ll love the twist in this so be sure to keep reading. Thought this was another fantastic psychological thriller.
"My mother has been found dead after an accident. And I can’t remember where I was last night. But I’m covered in bruises and have hazy memories of a terrible scream... We’d had our problems, but I would never have hurt her. Would I?"
We meet Emily who has blank spots from drinking too much on a night out. (We've all been there)She has returned home to build bridges with her family, then she gets the shocking call that her mother had been found dead.
I love a good Crime/Thriller book and was hooked with this one from the start! The way Emily was trusting her gut instict that something was going on, to the deflection from her family about what happened, that it was "just an accident" The storyline had a good pace to it and kept you guessing all the way through it. Short chapters which gives it a quick read feel to it.
All in all I enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down!
Thank you to Love Book Tours and the Author for the copy of the book.
Oh my! This was so good! It was full of twists and family secrets and I could not put it down! Just when I was sure I had it figured out there was another twist. I loved it!
Emily is in Australia for work and is dreading spending the next week with her family as things have been a struggle with her stepsister and stepfather. After a lunch with her Mom she goes out with a friend and remembers nothing of the night. She is woken by her phone and the news that her Mom is dead. To make matters worse she has cuts, bruises, and blood all over her. What happened last night? When she goes to her home and spends time with the family she finds things in her Mom’s office that make her question what was going on? Was her business and marriage as happy as Emily thought? The more she questions the more questions she has. Was her Mom’s death really any accident? Can she figure it out before it is too late?
Thanks to the author and Love Book Tour for providing a copy for my honest review.
I was part of the tour for The Mother-In-Law’s Secret by Melanie Price and when this was released I knew I wanted to read it!
Price is definitely so super skilled at writing psychological thrillers. It may only be the second book released by Price, but she has a certain way of telling the story and making it really difficult to pick the villain!
Price is also spectacular at twists and turns, and had me turning the pages faster than my brain could keep up.
I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to wake up one morning and have no recollection of the night before, and to find out your mother died in an accident - only you don’t know what’s going on but you think you might be involved?
The surprises and twists that kept coming made it really difficult to put the book down, I read it in one go.
I loved Price’s first book, but this exceeded my expectations by far - an absolutely fantastically written thriller!
Thank you @lovebooks for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing. My Perfect Family is psychological thriller and as everyone knows this is my favourite genre. This book did not let me down. I read it in a day, and I was hooked, truly addictive from start to finish and fantastic twists that I did not see coming. The story about Zara who Mums dies accidental, but Zara feels there more to, and they are not the perfect family at all. The story is written well and at fast pace you can keep up with. I fully enjoyed this book and loved how it had me guessing. It has a good about of suspense and tense running through the book I liked the characters Zara and her friend but did not like her stepdad and uncle. Brilliantly written. Can't wait to read more by Melanie Price this is the first book I have read by her and this won't be my last. 5 stars.
It wasn't the vacation she expected. She didn't expect to make up with her step-sister. She didn't expect to run into her ex-boyfriend. And she certainly didn't expect to wake up to a phone calling telling her that her mother was dead.
Price weaves all of these unexpected events into a thriller that will keep you guessing. Emily can't remember what she did last night, and the rest of the family including her aunt, uncle, stepfather, step-sister, and her mom's business partner are all acting shady. So of course, she puts her lawyerly skills to use to find out what happened.
If you like books that keep you guessing, this book's for you!
Thanks to Love Books Tours for an advance reader's copy.
My Perfect Family by Melanie Price starts with a dreadful event and then works its way through how that happened and who did it. The book races through at speed with twists and turns at every junction and it oozes with the emotion of the trauma and I was willing everything to be right for Emily Olsen. A couple of areas of description in the book seem a little woody, but it did not detract from the overall readability of the book. The book had short chapters which helped build tension and made for a fairly quick read. My Perfect Family was embroiled in twists and surprises all the way through. In conclusion a mystery involving a blended family that is fast paced with a few unexpected surprises. If you like a good mystery then this book is for you.
What happened here?! I was so hooked on this book that I read it in one sitting... And I didn't guess at all who the villain was, I was suspecting everyone but him/her. Sydney, Australia. Emily wakes up in her hotel room. She just came back to her homeland from London to help her mother with grandparents' house. She saw her the day before and had drinked a lot in the evening with her friend. Now, she gets a call in the morning that her mother was found dead... Was it really an accident? If not, who killed her mother? She suspects everyone now, even herself... 'My Perfect Family' was so, so, so good! Once I started I just couldn't stop reading! Amazing thriller. I would definitely want to know other Melanie Prices books!
The opening chapter draws you in and makes you want to continue reading. I mean that cover hooks you before you even open the book to the first page Aith fhe striking image and the tag 'My mother is dead. I think I killed her.'
The whole story revolves around Emily, having returned home for Sydney and her desperate battle to unravel the mystery surrounding her mother's death and whether she really had anything to do with it.
Emily is a great character and it was great to work backwards with Emily to work out what happened and fill in the blanks of drunken memory loss!
As usual, Melanie crafts an intricate tale of twists and turns that is both mysterious and thrilling.
This is a classic whodunnit. It seems everyone has something to hide. The author has done a good job of propping up several suspects- all with their motives to commit murder.
There were also several twists and turns designed to trip the reader into thinking they have the answers.
I love the family drama aspect of this but I feel like there was too much focus on the drama and the dramatics rather than finding the answers.
Also, I feel like we did not get the answers as to what happened to the protagonist on the night of the murder.
But this is a good psychological thriller which will leave you on the edge of your seat as you search for the answers.
I received an advanced copy and the review is mine and voluntary.
