The EMPs knock out America's cities in seconds... ...but her arteries, the highways, take a little longer.
Joey inherits a profitable trucking company from his retiring uncle. At 35, after a life driving wreckers and tow-trucks, struggling through night schools, and endless hard work at crash scenes, he sets out on a weeklong vacation to mentally prepare for the next big step of his life.
He hops in his classic Mustang, points it west, and savors the freedom of the open road…
When he finally comes to a stop, it isn’t because he reached a destination. Every car, truck, big rig, and tour bus rolls to a halt with him. Phones are dead. People are confused. Lost.
He knows what caused it.
He knows what it means for his safety.
He also knows he has the only working vehicle in the traffic jam...
Suddenly, the same highways that gave him freedom now have him trapped. To get home, he'll have to cut through a thousand miles of bad road.
This is the first book in a new EMP collapse series set in EE Isherwood’s Neighborhood Watch universe. This series takes place at the same time, but in different parts of a fallen America. Read one, read the other, or, if you can’t get enough EMP thrills, read both!
E.E. Isherwood has been a storyteller for over 30 years. Initially the muse took the form of childish comic strips. As a teen it manifested itself under the guise of Dungeons and Dragons adventures. In college it culminated with a Master's thesis on Missouri geography—an extremely boring kind of story. Three decades and several careers later he realized that siren song never stopped, so he began to author books. A life-long enthusiast of apocalyptic fiction, writing about zombies was his passion. Future titles in science fiction and fantasy are in the hopper. He lives in the St. Louis, Missouri area, where his series of zombie books takes place.
I have generally enjoyed this author's Neighborhood Watch series and this new series is connected but with a different group. We do have Frank's nephew Joey, the VP Emily Williams and an elderly couple from the Clownfish neighborhood but away on holiday. I did have a bit of trouble connecting with these guys though and largely because the cult got in the way. In NW, we did get to see that there was an internal cause to the EMP and attack, and clearly the cult we see here is part of that. However, this cult focus was just overpowering and seemed to border on unrealistic in the violent robotic members that could be easily changed back to reasonable people (I'm looking at you Victoria). The young people who survived the plane crash spent too much time wandering around and not focused on much of anything. The old couple were my favourites and I really want to see them make it home, so I will continue.
THE FIRST IN WHAT WILL BECOME ANOTHER GREAT SERIES FROM E.E. ISHERWOOD
1000 Miles of Bad Road: After the EMPs by E.E. Isherwood is a great book to start off what will hopefully be another great series. It's full of action, suspense, and intriguing, and will hold your interest throughout. As always with E.E. Isherwood, it's well written, and the characters are well defined.
You will definitely be routing for Joey, Libby, Kamino, and the rest of the cast as they struggle to say alive after the aftereffects of an EMP delivered through a nuclear attack on the U.S. from what looks to be brought on by a cult that wants to reset America and rule as the savor of a chosen few that have been brain washed and others that have been bribed with power and control of others.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing with future books in this series. I hope you too will enjoy reading this book.
A great read that is action-packed from the beginning to the end. The main characters we follow are Joey and Libby and they meet in chaotic and violent circumstances that follows them through the book. Kamino, Liam and Garth are young and get themselves caught up in a situation that is difficult for them to understand what is actually happening and get out of safely and then we have a lovely couple Herb and Mildred who are elderly and far from home. A thoroughly enjoyable first book in a new series.
Master wordsmith EE Isherwood has out done himself with this one! This series takes place in the same universe as his excellent series Neighborhood Watch and it takes the reader on a wild and totally unexpected journey. If you’re familiar with Neighborhood Watch’s Uncle Frank you might remember his nephew, Joey. Joey is the center of book one of 1000 Miles of Bad Road and he is just as likely to fall into a difficult position as his uncle. If you haven’t read Neighborhood Watch yet please do yourself a huge kindness and get that awesome 10 book series which is complete. I have throughly enjoyed everything Isherwood has written. If you like apocalyptic/dystopian fiction you will love it too.
Disclaimer: I received this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
1000 Miles Of Bad Road - a review by Rosemary Kenny.
EE Isherwood delivers a real treat of a series opener, (a spin-off from his outstanding Neighbourhood Watch epic)... the curiously-titled 1000 Miles of Bad Road.
Frank Carpenter's trucker nephew Joey is hanging up his stetson and driving his red Mustang the eponymous 1000 miles from Colorado, to take ownership of Frank's haulage business in Chicago. His uncle plans to enjoy retirement to Florida, but a solar EMP triggered by an evil cult's supporters changes everything in an instant.
As chaos erupts on the streets and with disaster everywhere, Joey meets Libby, looking for her daughter, entrapped by cult members, and together with Reed and his granddaughter, they escape corrupted law-enforcers among other attackers, in a world gone mad. In small town Lamar, teens Kamino, Liam and Garth, (who all have parents connected to the Government) seem to be the only survivors from the downed Air Force Two plane they were all on.The trio face terrifying threats while trying to find help. Can they find sanctuary anywhere? Survivalist Herb and his wife Mildred, both in their 80s, are struggling to get out of central New York back to Clownfish Cove, but they too must evade desperate individuals who seek food and supplies in the aftermath of the EMP. Will NYPD officer Anna help them? A riveting, dystopian near-future possibility that will send a frisson of emotion along your spine, as you ride along with the engaging, well-developed characters, through terror, triumph, tragedy, deliverance and much more. Get a copy of EE Isherwood's 1000 Miles of Bad Road today - and buckle up for a wild ride!
A great start to a fast-moving post-apocalyptic series. Likable and relatable characters of all ages and backgrounds. I was sorry to see this part of the ride end and will definitely catch another ride with these newfound friends at some point further down the road.
After Reading the Neighborhood Series, I was excited to finally meet Frank’s nephew, Joey. I’m looking forward to seeing how Joey and friends survive the EMP apocalypse.
This in the neighborhood watch universe and a pretty good continuation but it’s a bit slow compared to the other book but still well worth reading hoping book 2 will be better.
It's a confusing world. When there's a nuclear weapon going off. Young girls in strange blue clothes heading south. Cars stopping and accident happing. Every thing seems turned around.
I read neighborhood watch and was sad when it ended so I was very glad to receive these books as a gift. The story telling is fantastic and easy to follow making it a very enjoyable read.
