On Christmas Eve, a kind-hearted stray dog confronts an angry pack of strays
The hero of our story is a magnificent black Labrador retriever named Max. Max once lived with humans, but he was cast out and forced to survive on his own.
As a stray, Max is a migratory animal. Farm country is good in the warm months, with all kinds of food in the forests and the fields. But when the nights turn cold and frost lingers in the grass, Max moves to town, where food treasures hide in easily toppled metal cans.
With the holidays fast approaching, Max makes his way to a new town where he narrowly escapes an encounter with a pack of unfriendly strays. Otherwise, life is good in the new town. Max plays fetch with a young restaurant worker, and he helps a heavily-pregnant stray dog find food and shelter.
But then the angry pack returns to threaten the new mother and her puppies. For Max to save them, it’s going to take a miracle.
Patrick Kelly has deep roots in Virginia. His mother grew up in Crozet, and he fondly remembers feeding chickens and picking peaches on his grandparents’ farm. Later, he graduated from the University of Virginia. His extended family has held reunions in Staunton, Hampton, Natural Bridge, Gordonsville, Afton, Smith Mountain Lake, and Wintergreen.
Patrick and his wife spend their summers in Wintergreen, hiking mountain trails, sampling local wines, and marveling at nature’s beauty. The Blue Ridge Mountains provide the perfect setting for retired detective Bill O'Shea to match wits with scheming murderers.
If you have a fondness in your heart for the natural places on earth, pull up a chair and enjoy a classic, traditional mystery set in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Patrick is winner of a Beverly Hills Book Award and a silver medalist for the Wishing Shelf Book Awards for adult fiction. He serves as president of the Heart of Texas Chapter of Sisters in Crime.
This is a short story s there is not a lot of action. It is, indeed, heart warming, though. We get to meet Max, who will be a very important part of the next Wintergreen Mysteries, Murder At Dawn, due to be released Feb 13. This is an ecxellent series, so if you haven't read it yet, you have time to read the 1st 3 books.
