Four months into their new lives in the witness protection program, Piper and her gran, former members of an illicit motorcycle gang, start to make peace with the fact that this is it.
Well, in their own whip-out-your-weapons-at-every-opportunity kind of way.
They’re part of the retirement complex in Bitter End, Florida, where they hate mostly everything: the climate, the jolly residents, the endless partying and competitive games—like the current mini-golf tournament that’s costing Piper and Gran their last nerve—and the practically forced socializing.
Still, Piper has gotten an official approval from the director of the retirement complex to live with Gran. Open-ended. Yikes.
But when one of the investors of the retirement complex is murdered and someone has been embezzling funds from the complex, suspicion falls on the director, Samuel Appleby. Too bad he bails as soon as the police need to question him.
Piper realizes that her living with Gran—still the best of the worst options—depends on Samuel Appleby’s position as director. She more or less believes he’s innocent, but she needs to prove it too, or else she and everybody else can say goodbye to the good times at the Till the Bitter End Independent Living complex.
With the help of Gran and Edie, their quirky, annoying, adorable, and feisty neighbor, Piper sets out to clear the goofy director while trying hard not to lose at the mini-golf tournament that won’t stop, not even for murder and embezzlement.
Hole in One is perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich, Jana DeLeon, Gemma Halliday, Liliana Hart, and JB Lynn.
Deany Ray has always wanted to be a writer so she decided to take the plunge and dive into it. She loves writing cozy mysteries, as this is what she likes to read the most. Her favorite activities are traveling, going to the movie theatre, meeting up with friends and having cooking sessions with her awesome mom.
This series is just different. I am enjoying the evolving of the characters in a light and humorous way. My teen kept asking why I was chuckling last night and it was all due to the antics in the story.
All of Piper's mysteries are fun books, not for someone who is looking for a serious read. If you are looking for an easy book to relax with I recommend this series.
While i still enjoy some of the characters and their antics, I am bored to tears over the pace, the endless foot powder discussions, the templated third act bathroom visit by Piper, where she gets kidnaped, and the lack of character development.
The two main characters, Gran (Dorothy) and Piper, her granddaughter, haven't evolved in any way through 5 books. They are just standing in place while a murder occurs virtually biweekly. I feel like I'm watching that dreadful British show "Death in Paradise" where someone is murdered every week. Why do tourists still go there? Anyway, yes, the whole murder every book has gotten super old. Are there no other crimes? When will Dorothy date Theodore, the hunky retired SEAL who clearly likes her? Why can't Piper let down her guard for a nanosecond and do something about Ryker, the smoking hot PI? The super secret squirrel routine they are running is getting so so so boring. We learn nothing more about their past lives, any plans for the future. There's no movement. It's like every day someone says, "Hey, let's solve a murder!" like it's a high school drama club production. Then the template directs the rest of the story.
I'm ok with a basic structure for a lengthy series. But there has to be some movement, some growth, and some kind of new territory to build. I'm not seeing it.
Piper-Gram-Edie...If there's trouble, it will find them! Another hilarious glimpse of life in Bitter End Retirement living. Where 31 year old Piper lives with her Gram and about 300 other people age of 55 and up. And Piper and Gram get roped into crazy activities by their neighbor Edie. A freakishly high number of crimes and murders have occured in the complex during the short time they've lived there. You can bet that Piper, Gram, and Edie have gotten involved in every one. Like the Three Musketeers (or should I say the Three Stooges?) they are out there, involved with every goofball idea or crime, with Piper and Gram deflecting questions about their past.
Don't even get me started on the most coveted prize of foot powder! For a delightful, silly, fast paced fun read, this is the series to read, and this 5th volume will keep you reading and laughing! What a great concept and unexpected fun!
Deany Ray has once again given her readers an enjoyable experience in mystery and mayhem. It means it's time to figure out facts from fiction and these three women are the perfect ones for the job. Acquire " Hole In One " the fifth cozy mystery in ( A Piper Harris Mystery) today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. Kat
First Piper Harris and her grandmother are made to participate in a mini golf tournament only to discover that they are very bad at it! When Piper sneaks out to practice one night, once again she discovers a dead body. And when the director of the retirement community becomes the primary suspect, Piper, nosy, yet loving senior neighbor Edie and Piper’s grandmother Dorothy decide they must find the real killer or Piper may be thrown out of the home she shares with her grandmother now that there is an interim director running the retirement center in the former director’s absence. This hilarious and charming series makes me laugh out loud with Piper, Dorothy, and Edie’s antics. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
I was so excited to go back to Til the Bitter End Independent Living Complex! Piper and Gran have begun to come to terms with having to live there. They even agreed to play on Edie's mini-golf team for the retirement center annual championship even though neither had ever played! That didn't go quite as planned when they discovered the dead body of one of the complex's investors on the golf course! When you add the discovery of embezzlement from the complex, you have one big mess! Be prepared for lots of laughs from the zany antics of these senior adults! You never know what Piper and Gran are going to do either! One of my favorite series and I'm sure you'll agree! Deany Ray has outdone herself with this series and I hope there's plenty more to come!
Trouble magnets, Piper, Gran and Edie are at it again. Edie has roped Piper and Gran into participating with in the Bitter End mini-golf tournament . Piper and Gran are unbelievably bad at the game and they sneak out to practice and they find the dead body of one of the investors of the retirement community. Hilarity ensues as the trio try to solve a murder, reveal an embezzler and clear the director of any wrongdoing while trying to win the tournament . Another fun read in this series. Can be read as a stand alone but the series is worth reading for the entertainment value. I am eager to read book six. I received an arc copy of this book and this is my freely offered and honest review.
Because I'm a glutton for punishment and like to read stories all the way through I'm continuing on with the series. If you read the prior books this is no different. Same discussion about how being in witness protection is difficult, how living in a retirement community is stupid, how Piper has changed, how Edie bakes a lot and is smarter than she looks, and how Riker gets in the way but is God's gift to women. It's still cute and fun and if you ignore how many times she repeats the same things over and over in the series and just get past them it's a decent cozy mystery.
Hole in One is the 5th book in the Piper Harris Mysteries. When the investors for for the retirement settlement where Gran and Piper live show up during one of the seniors activities. Piper gets worried about her living arrangement, especially as the current director is AWOL after being accused of murder and embezzlement of a very large sum of money. Now Piper, Gran, and Edie are investigation the most important case of their short time of looking into things.
This is probably the best book of the series, even though there was a feeling of déjà vu in a couple of places.
Piper, Gran, and the residents of the retirement village in Florida are back again for this new fun murder investigation. The big event in this book is a miniature golf tournament. Piper and Gran are terrible. But luck apparently is with them. A body shows up on the mini golf court.
Also, someone seems to be stealing money from the community. All evidence seems to point to one person, but he insists he's innocent.
This is another fun cozy. The series can be picked up at any point and enjoyed.
Deny Ray, you are the queen. This series is excellent. Piper, Edie a Dorothy are a hoot. The retirement community in Bitter End is the real deal. I laugh more with your books than any other. Of course, I am old, retired and living in Florida. Your characters are my family, friends and neighbors. Please do not stop writing this series. Anytime I need a pick me up or a mood lifter, I turn to your books. Thanks for keeping me entertained. Thanks for the laughs.
I love this story and these characters. I am now going to have to wait till summer for the next one. This story stayed close to the retirement village. It involved stealing from the retirement company and of course a murder. It was very exciting and action packed. Loved their tee shirts. Highly recommend this book and the series. It is probably best to read the series in order, but there is enough explaining in each book that it can be read as a stand-alone. Very enjoyable read.
Piper and Gran will have you in stitches. When they get with Edie, you know for sure something's going to happen, and of course they're going to be involved. Both Gran and Piper are going soft and beginning to care and have true feelings for the residents in their retirement community. You know Piper has feelings for Ryker, and he has them for her too. Can't wait for the next book. Such an awesome series. The author, Deany Ray has such a wonderful flair in writing, and it draws you in and you become like part of the group in the retirement community.
Edie gets Piper and her Gran into a miniature golf tournament. Piper and her Gran have never played before but they figure they can do it. They figured wrong. One night they went out to practice they come across a dead body of one of the retirement community's investors. Then it is discovered embezzlement has been going on. Piper, Edie and Gran start investigating. Funny, a good mystery.
Another crazy adventure with Piper, Gran and Edie had me chuckling for most of the book. There was a scene with Piper and Edie having to use an outside painters elevator that was hilarious—I could actually picture this happening lol. Then the showdown itself while eventually effective was funny in so many ways! Good old Leonardi had eventually wandered in on the case and was able to see Piper in action. Since the golf tournament final was postponed, it’d be interesting to see who actually won!
Ok yall by Book 5, I'm asking myself just how much murder and craziness can go on at a retirement village?!?! Ya know what I mean? I love the crazy characters but I think we need to turn down the murders. Can't they have some silly thefts and other not so serious crimes? Anyway, I'll keep going because I do love the people but let's hope it doesn't get too out there.
I believe this one was a better book from the Piper Harris series. Gran has me laughing all the time at her nonchalant attitude, especially when she sneaks away to practice - no one would have seen that coming. I was however disappointed in the team tshirts, I has expected Eddi to be donning golf attire from a previous era. But the tshirts worked. With Ryker ‘stepping back’ I am hopeful the relationship between him and Piper will be on the horizon for the next book.
This has been an enjoyable series even with the flashbacks. I skim over those just in case I miss something. Some progress has been made as far as Ryker is concerned but I’m still rooting for him and Piper to at least go on a date! I mean she is only 31 after all!
I love these books and most of what Deany Ray writes. They are good clean fun and so easy to follow and get absorbed. In this day and age, it is difficult to find a book that isn’t explicit in profanity and “bedroom” scenes and Deany’s books are just good clean fun! Thank you so much for this.
Since this contemporary cozy mystery takes place in a retirement community I feel that the title shenanigans continue is appropriate. The cast of character is the same in this a surprise twist at the end. I think most people will appreciate. A joy another adventure at the bitter end.
I am so glad your books popped up on my Kindle as a recommendation. I really enjoy the adventures with Piper, Grams and Edie. They sure run into some close calls while solving crimes at the retirement community. I look forward to the ext book in the series. Robert Ericksen
Piper is back & she’s trying to find where she fits in now that WITSEC has uprooted her & Gran. A new case happens to land at there feet while playing golf in a championship. I love the characters. I can’t wait to see what they stumble into next?
I so enjoyed the book ...It was a quick read a funny mystery & colorful character's ...I love Piper & her Gran they keep things happening at the retirement complex.....Thanks for the enjoyable read looking forward to more adventures with Piper & her gran....M.L.😊
Piper, Gran, and Edie investigate embezzlement and murder. The answers could mean the difference between Piper staying with Gran or leaving. I enjoyed the hilarious escapades these three characters face, especially when the alligator came to life.
This series gets funnier as we begin to know the characters and they develop. Foot powder, peach pie, mini golf and murder seem like a great combination! I can't wait to see what happens next!
I gave this book 3 stars because the first few chapters were really boring. It kept repeating Piper and Gran's past too much. Just a hint of their story would be enough. Otherwise, I found it quite interesting. (Although I love all of your other books. I think I have them all).
This series has been enjoyable and had me chuckling. I believe this last one had me laughing the most. Piper and Edie always get themselves in a mess. Edie is so feisty, ready for action. I will be waiting for the next book (hopefully Gran will lighten up).
I don’t know why I get such a kick out of reading these books but I do. The story line is original and the characters are hilarious. The dialogue and attitude of these people are so entertaining.
