A year ago, I slammed into the boards for my first concussion. Fast recovery, no big deal. A month ago, I slammed into the car dash and earned my second. Along with a broken ankle and a wrecked play-off run.
Now I’m every Renegades fan’s Enemy Number One and doing time in a ritzy physical rehab facility. I’ve pretended I don’t care. That I’ll recover and reclaim my place on the team. But one more night in this joint, and I might add murder and mayhem to my list of troubles.
Then she walked in.
I'm all about stepping up for my friends, but playing chaperone to a grumpy hockey player might just be one ask too many.
I knew who he was the minute I caught sight of the devastatingly handsome man having a raging meltdown in the middle of the lobby.
Who would think a harmless, I-know-who-you-are wink would awaken a monster? Much less one who decided I was the solution to his problems. But my roller derby team would be homeless in another month and he made an offer we couldn’t refuse.
Now I’m sleeping down the hall from my favorite Renegade and learning he’s more than just an abrasive jerk good on a pair of skates. Between his obsession with K-dramas he thinks I don’t know about, his possessive kisses, and the way he’s turned into my biggest derby fan, he might be just about perfect.
When he gets cleared by the team physicians, I’m ready to celebrate. He’s got his wish. He’s back in the game. He no longer needs a babysitter. But before I can blink, he’s showing me the door.
How did I read him so wrong?
If you're in the mood for a grumpy hockey player facing a career-ending injury and the little bit of sunshine that thinks he's up to the challenge of recovery, Any Other Day just might be the one for you. Tropes include forced proximity and mental health rep, found family and roller derby divas. This standalone romance takes place in an interconnected world (Renegades & Three Corners) with a guaranteed happily ever after.
I’ve been a sucker for hockey romances lately. This one did not disappoint at all! I loved that it took a different route from usual hockey romances, instead seeing the MMC Boh be injured and recovering in a rehab center. While hockey was a topic, it didn’t feel like a typical sports romance to me, it really evolved past that to make a fantastic romance read in general. Boh was a stubborn MMC, mad at the world for his current injuries and wasn’t expecting Novy of all people to be the one to watch over him. Novy was a breath of fresh air. She was a sweet FMC, so full of life, love and I just loved her personality overall. I also loved that their names were extremely unique. It made me want to connect more with them. The story itself is a slow burn, but well worth it. It’s one of very few books I can say I really enjoyed as a slow burn novel. I can’t wait to read more of Jenna’s work again soon!
The Richland Renegade’s hockey team. Bohdan Zacha has a broken ankle and a concussion. The left winger was in a car accident and according to his contract can not go home without a medical guardian. During an argument in the lobby over his need to remain at the rehab hospital, in walks Novaline Dalton with a home cooked meal for her best friend Scout. As she walks by Boh she gives him a wink and he proceeds to amble towards her but loses his balance and careens into her. They both go sprawling across the floor under a shower of food. That’s just a peak at this page turning treasure. There is comedy mixed in with a continuing story in the explosion of the NHL team the Richmond Renegades. There are plenty of surprises and more than one kind of skate used. A really enjoyable story that I couldn’t put down.
I loved this story of Boh and Novy. The way they meet and their path forward is one crazy ride. Novy is this sweet, caring, and strong. She works hard but knows how to be independent and loving all at the same time. Boh is a grumpy hockey player that is recovering from injuries. We see a lot of drama throughout the story. We dive right in from the very beginning. It pulled me end and didn’t let go. We see mistakes being made and no thought how they are going to play out. I loved their interactions and the drama filled scenes. We have some very real and serious elements to the story that definitely adds to it. At times this story becomes very emotional with the issues that play throughout the story. One thing I absolutely loved was the book club. They were an absolute riot. I hope we see more of them. I would have loved to have a bit more of them in the story as well but the moments we did get were hilarious. We have so many great moments throughout the book and this story honestly doesn’t disappoint. It is absolutely a must read.
3.5stars Boh certainly knows how to make a grand entrance. Novy’s first impression of him was not great and it seems he kept putting the wrong foot forward. He is persistent though and eventually wins her over.
Heart racing, action packed and emotionally thrilling roller coaster adventure filled with exciting charters, witty banter, thrilling twists and undeniable passion. An edge of your seat adventure from beginning to end and so hard to put down.
What an emotional rollercoaster! As a sunshine/grumpy romance, Novy’s eternal optimist personality yearns pick apart Boh’s prickly shell. I feel like this was a love comes softly type romance. As his “Designated Medical Guardian” Novy is with Boh day in and day out. She recognizes her attraction quickly, but keeps it locked down. Boh takes a bit longer and realizes it’s not some big, grand gesture, but all the little things she does that shows all her love and care for him. It’s really sweet. But it also freaks him out.
I enjoyed both characters in many ways. I didn’t want to put the book down because I was dying to see what was around the next page. The supporting characters were awesome and I’m going to need a follow up on Scout and Coach for sure!
My feelings about this book can be summed up pretty well with the statement "This was fine".
Boh, a hockey player with a broken ankle and concussion after a car accident, needs a medical guardian to be allowed home. In comes Novy literally crashing into his life.
Forced proximity + hockey romance. A trope I love and a trope I'm neutral on. Wasn't sure what to think when starting this book.
As I said in my review for the prequel to this series this book really should have been a continuation of the story set up there. Yes we get little sneak peeks into those characters and what they are doing but it's simply not enough.
The author manages to inject a good amount of humour and banter into this but ultimately I wasn't really feeling the chemistry between our two main characters..
I’ve been watching this trend of hockey romances being the new “it” thing in the genre, and since I’m a hockey fan, I’m all in. I saw a request to review Any Other Day by Jenna McCall and decided to give this new-to-me author a chance. And now I’m hooked.
Any Other Day is the first book in the Richland Renegades series. It sounds like a spin-off of another series, but I hadn’t read it and didn’t really feel like I was missing out on anything. The book follows Boh, a hockey player who is in recovery after a car crash, leaving him with a concussion and cast. And then there’s Novy, a dietician and roller derby player who, through some crazy turn of events, ends up being Boh’s babysitter.
Boh and Novy are both interesting characters. The author bills this as a grumpy-sunshine romance, and she’s not wrong. Boh is all kinds of grumpy as he’s dealing with concussion protocols and is worried his career might be at an end. He also doesn’t want to deal with a relationship, but there are sparks with Novy, and she’s not a one-night-stand kind of girl. Also, being in the hockey team’s circle and besties with the owner’s granddaughter makes her off-limits. He was fun to watch with all the conflicts going on inside his head.
Novy is sunshine personified. She’s very much anti-conflict and will do everything she can to smooth things over—except on the roller derby ring. Watching her deal with Boh’s swinging emotions was interesting and made me root for them to find their happily ever after. I also really enjoyed the derby subplot, especially when it was so much about who Novy was, and I wish it had been explored more.
Any Other Day was a wonderful read. I appreciated the concussion aspect of the book as it’s so important in contact sports these days, and exploring the ramifications, especially after a player’s playing days are over, is critical. I was sucked into the story and couldn’t put it down since I had to see Novy and Boh find their happily ever after. This was my first Jenna McCall book, and it won’t be my last. ~ Jen for Novels Alive
Totally spectacular grumpy/sunshine hockey romance! Boh and Novy are stellar on the page together and suck you right in from the first chance encounter, bringing the heat and tension, laughs and awkward moments, and wrapping up with one of the best speeches about being in love I think I’ve ever read. Recovering from a concussion, a broken leg, and a disastrous ending to his hockey season, Boh Zacha just wants out of the rehab center he’s stuck in. But with his concussion symptoms still too concerning the only way he’s getting out is if he gets himself a babysitter. Luck hands him one in the form of Novy Dalton, a total stranger who just so happens to be a dietician and whose roller derby team is in desperate need of a place to practice. One legally binding contract and 24 hours later, Novy’s moving into his apartment and Boh is getting set free from the rehab center. Now she’s dragging him to Dr.’s appointments, making him meals just for his concussion and he’s cheering her on at roller derby’s and not so secretly obsessing over K-dramas all while burning up the sheets because they have some serious heat between them. Then the perfect guy Novy thought she was living with gets the all clear to play hockey again and he’s throwing her out of his apartment faster than she can blink. How could she have been so wrong about a guy? So good, so enjoyable! Both MC’s are fantastic, the plot is so much more than just a romance, and I kid you not when I say that I was a gooey puddle on the floor when Boh gives Novy his big speech at the end. I loved how the whole concussion issue is written, both how it is in Boh’s current situation and what his future could hold, just a very realistic look at what could happen to anyone in a contact sport and what making decisions knowing those risks look like. Just a ridiculously good book from Jenna McCall and now I absolutely can’t wait for the next one in the series!
This slow burn hockey themed story is so much more than a sports romance! Novy and Boh give us a story that will stick to your heart for days to follow once you finish reading. From their character arcs to the foreshadowing of future couples/books, everything is paced and written to keep you fully-immersed in an incredible journey. Boh has a heavy load on his plate, but what he doesn’t expect is sunshiney Novy to twist and turn it upside down and inside out!
Novy has such a big heart and you can easily see how much she cares for people. I love the fact that she’s a roller derby girl, allowing the confidence and boldness that she hides deep inside to brightly shine when she’s on skates. She’s incredibly hardworking and doesn’t cut Boh any slack, frequently encouraging him to process more than the physical part of his injuries. She knows exactly when and how to push Boh and when to step back, allowing him room to breathe. Her friendly nature causes everyone to be drawn to her, making her relatable and fun to read!
Boh is a strong force, yet his injury is causing personal strife. His arc throughout the story is absolutely breathtaking as he fights anxiety and fear. Hockey has been his entire life. It’s understandable that his grumpy demeanor is kicked up a few notches. His friendships evolve as him and Novy spend more time together and we get to see him open up for more than hockey.
The heat between these two is well worth every page of angst and tension as we watch them build a relationship. It’s not until after some difficult conversations that Boh redeems himself, but when he does — oh my heart!! I hope to see the entire cast of characters find love in future books — absolutely a fantastic book!
I don't know a lot about hockey IRL or even necessarily like it but I am definitely in my hockey romance era! This book was a fun read for me - I love grumpy/sunshine and Boh & Novy have this down to a tee!
Through a series of events at the rehab centre where Novy is visiting her BFF she ends up being Boh's Designated Medical Guardian ( who altho she has never met before, she has admired him at games) and has to move in with him while he recovers from an accident that has sidelined his hockey playing. Being in each other's space for long periods of time really starts to cause some tension and a definite slow burn of emotion between the two, which I of course loved! Boh and Novy have some great chemistry and some awesome spice together!
I've not read a female character that was a Roller Derby Queen before and I ate that up! Novy is strong, caring, kind and loving but definitely not a pushover, no matter how grump Boh is! I thought she was a great fit for him!
Boh was endearing as well as sexy . I was really taken with how Jenna portrayed Boh's perception of himself in the world without the sport that he loved so much.....that his injuries could take away everything he had worked so hard for and he just couldn't let that happen. He was resolved to make sure that he would play again, no matter what. Jenna's writing of the seriousness of repetitive concussions in the sport and their repercussions is not something that you see all the time and I quite liked that.
I thought these two had great characterization and I loved how they interacted with their friends and I hope for more stories from them too!
This is the first book in the Richland Renegade series and I am on board for the whole game ;)
Boh, the male professional hockey player male lead, is in a recovery centre after taking a serious concussion. He’s frustrated and scared and just wants to get out. Novy, the female dietitian/roller derby player lead, is just visiting a friend who is also recovering from a concussion when Boh hijacks her presence. When Boh’s handlers realise Novy is connected with the hockey club and a valid home assistant, they offer her a new home for her roller derby club, which she desperately needs.
But this is just going to be a professional relationship. There’s certainly no way she’d be interested in anything more from her grumpy patient. And Boh knows that his focus can only be hockey - nothing else matters…
This story is mostly dual POV (occasional chapters from secondary character perspectives), well written, and a grumpy/sunshine, contemporary sports romance. I enjoyed the many sides of Novy’s personality - the compassion that led to people pleasing through much of her life, contrasted with her assertive playful roller derby side, and her career focused dreams. I enjoyed Boh’s personal growth through the story, especially at the end, and his learning to care for other people’s needs. I enjoyed the relationship development. I understood the characters’ choices but several frustrated me. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I laughed at so many parts of this story and empathised with several others. I enjoyed the secondary character integration and am particularly looking forward to Novy’s best friend’s story.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
Boh is a famous hockey player, currently seriously injured and living in rehab H-E-double hockey sticks. He's going stir crazy and wants to break out, but the doctors say he can only leave if he has a designated medical guardian to keep him company. Yeah - he doesn't need a babysitter. Novy is a dietician with a roller derby alter ego. She goes to visit her friend and teammate, Scout, in the rehab facility, and meets Boh when he crashes into her in the lobby, ruining all the homemade food she brought for Scout. Novy is not really a hockey fan. She's gone to plenty of games and events with Scout (who happens to be the granddaughter of the owner of Boh's team.) But Novy sure knows who Boh is. And ooh - he's pretty hot in person too! Until he opens his mouth, that is. Then he's just arrogant and pushy, if he talks at all. Grunting seems to be his preferred method of communication. Novy reluctantly agrees to be Boh's designated medical guardian, and finds out that he's a grump pretty much all the time. Novy is trying to save her derby team's practice facility. Boh has fears that this second concussion he's dealing with may take him out of the game he loves. Also, he's worried about how the multiple brain injuries will affect him in the years to come. Their friends are a great support system for them both, and I can't wait to follow some of them as this series continues. This was a fun read that pulled me in from the first page. I'm really looking forward to what's to come! I received an advance copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
I liked this book a lot. I thought the way Boh and Novy met was funny. He was really rude and grumpy towards her in the beginning but she won him over eventually. I did not like his attitude towards her at first, because she was doing him a huge favor by being his medical guardian. I also hated what he did to her once his need for her to be his guardian was finished. (I can't say much more about that without spoiling the book) I liked the advice his teammates gave him in regards to what happened with Novy. He needed to hear it. I also liked that when he manned up and apologized to her, that she didn't make it easy for him. They did get their happy ending eventually but she made him work for it.
“You deserve so much more than a damaged hockey player with nothing else going for him. So much more than someone like me. But if you’ll have me, Novy, I’ll drop to my knees in gratitude. Being without you terrifies me more than the fear of what my future holds.” “I appreciate it took a lot for you to come by and offer your apology. And I accept it for the things you’ve mentioned. But you got it all wrong, Bohdan. You think I deserve more than a ‘broken hockey player’? I think I deserve more than a partner who never takes my thoughts and opinions into consideration. I deserve more than a man who thinks he can decide for me what I want in my life, what I’ll accept.”
Jenna McCall's Richland Renegades are making me look at hockey in a whole new light as she bring the lives of the players to light with a keen eye to detail and ability to steam up my glasses with her wonderful storytelling voice. The flair she has for crafting characters that jump off the page and continue to live on in my imagination long after I shut the book ensure this a series I will continue to follow. This book brought great passion to the page not just with booming banter-filled voices but also with the wonderful twist of having not just one athlete but two the focus of this story. Novy and Boh are the perfect pairing as they both share an electric and immediate connection, in delightful Grump meets Sunshine, Playful meets Driven, Salty and Sweet romance along with a powerful story of acceptance and support. Told with wit, banter, and enough steam to power a small city, McCall sets up a couple that I loved and gave me glimpses of characters that I hope will be getting their own books. But what I loved most was that this wasn't just sports or a comedy romance. McCall always makes me connect with her characters at a deeper level and I found myself looking at what motivated both Navy and Boh and following as they developed and grew.
Another wonderful read that is a great weekend getaway!
I love a good hockey romance! This book didn’t involve any on ice action, but it focused on injuries, particularly concussions, and what some of these athletes go through outside the arena. This book and these characters felt real. They were dealing with real issues that had very real consequences. And I was instantly hooked!
Boh was gruff and taciturn. Nova was all smiles and good natured. But the two of them together had the sexual tensions rising, and they were combustible together! There were a few times that I didn’t like something that Boh said or did, even if he was trying to “protect” Novy. He went about it in a hurtful, almost cruel way. Novy was fantastic! I loved that she had the derby side to her. It was clear she cared about Boh and was falling for him, but I’m glad that she stood up for herself when she did! I honestly fell in love with the characters in this book, not just Boh and Novy. I loved Shep and Scout, the wild derby fans, and the rest of the Renegades! I can’t wait to see what comes next, but if I’m being honest, I’m really itching for more Scout and Etienne!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.
When Novavline "Novy" Dalton went to visit her bestie at the rehab center she is confronted by a guy who bumps into her and then tries to talk her into being his medical guardian. Yes she knew who he was and that he was having a meltdown. But then he made her an offer she couldn't refuse and now she's living in his place keeping an eye on him. And it's a plus that she's a registered dietician.
Boh Zacha is the top line left winger for the Renegades. He had gotten his first concussion a year ago and recovered fine. Six months later he got his second and didn't shake off the symptoms which landed him in the Brain Injury Center. On top of that he had an ankle injury so he's on crutches. He needs help as much as he thinks he doesn't, but if it gets him out of the rehab center and home he'll do whatever it takes.
Novy is also on the roller derby team the Richland Killbillies. When they lost their building lease, part of Boh's agreement with Novy was the use of one of the Renegades buildings. Now after watching her and the team he's become a big fan.
What happens when he is finally cleared to play hockey again?
I'm rating this book 5 stars because not only is it a great hockey romance, it deals with some serious topics. Boh made some bad decisions. At the opening of the book, he's in a rehab center, dealing with a broken ankle and another concussion. Not only is he dealing with his health issues, he was a star player on his team and he missed the playoffs, and may have caused his team to lose early in the post-season. He knows it and he regrets it. But he really wants to get back on the ice.
Novy is a dietician who gets roped into being Boh's companion, hired to ensure that he does everything he can to heal completely. Her best friend is also in rehab for a concussion so Novy's well aware of the damage that can be done to the brain.
There are some serious, life-affecting decisions that discussed in this book. The characters live the joys and dangers of high impact sports. I found the book touching and enlightening. Their growing relationship and hard decisions were touching. I recommend this book for the romance and the reality that athletes face about their short, but lucrative careers.
This is a grumpy sunshine romance with a dual POV featuring Boh, a hockey player on the mend after an accident, and Novy, a roller derby girl and dietician, who fall into a forced proximity situation after Novy signs a contract to be Boh's "Designated Medical Guardian" in order to save her roller derby team.
Boh's character is grumpy throughout this story and struggles with coming to terms with the restrictions enforced upon him following an accident and concussion protocol. He anxiously worries about the ramifications this might have on his career and future. I really liked his character development, with the help of Novy's optimistic outlook, as he progressed with his healing. I feel like sometimes with a sunshine personality, the character is also naive, but Novy was well written with a really good heart and caring personality, which made her very likable. I enjoyed reading Boh and Novy's story.
This is the first in the Richland Renegades series. There is a sneak peak at the end for book two, Any Bit of Luck, featuring another player on the team Shep and his love interest Meri.
Thank you to Jenna McCall for the ebook and entertaining story.
I want to start by saying I loved this book. It's a very down-to-earth contemporary sports romance with a realistic view on handling injuries and relationships. It isn't super spicy but the characters are great together and the banter is adorable. These two were made for each other!
Boh fits the definition of grump to a T but with good reason. This book has a decent representation of the depression and anger issues that go along broken bones and a brain injury. His parts get a little sad but in the best way. That grovel had me taking a second to breathe before finishing it.
Novy is an independent, kickbutt derby girl/dietitian with the patience of a saint. I loved her character so much. The way she handled Boh and his recovery but still set her own limits and handled her own business had me applauding. I appreciate a take no sh... FMC ❤️ (Her bestie is pretty great too - I'm a little sad the next book isn't hers.)
I have already recommended this book to a friend and I would recommend it to anyone that loves a sweet hockey romance that touches on deep emotions with a great group of characters. 🥰
I had the joy of being able to read both “Anyone but You” (the prequel to the series) and this one (book 1 of the series) back to back, and I absolutely loved both! Boh and Novy are the perfect match. She doesn’t take his crap and he learns to come out of his shell.
I love the dual POV and the fact that this wasn’t just some romance book that happened to be about a hockey player. It deals with Boh’s broken bones and major concussion and the emotional roller coaster that goes along with that. It’s a touchy subject for sports players, whether it’s amateur or professional, and the author has done a wonderful job of highlighting that.
This is more of a slower burn, with lots of sensual tension and the spice isn’t crazy but soo good. Novy is a strong FMC and I loved how even though she accepted his apology, she didn’t just give in right away. She made sure he knew that it wasn’t ok for him to just make major decisions for her and made him WORK for her and the spot he wanted in her life 🖤 Never settle for less than everything you deserve!
Thank you so much Jenna McCall for the opportunity of reading this advanced copy ♥️
Ok so first I loved the story. And I want to confirm that this book’s spicy scenes are definitely open door. I enjoy them a little more descriptive but I think that the level of spice in this book is great still. I also really appreciated the seriousness the issue of concussions in sports was addressed.
My only gripe as a Veteran since 2012 in Roller Derby, is that I feel the sport could have been better researched prior to writing the bout in the book. I’m not going to dock my rating, because Roller Derby is a VERY complex and VERY difficult sport. But there were several inconsistencies with some of the very basic facts of the sport. I will point out one so you know I’m not just making it up. The number of players on the track was incorrect.
Did this take away from the story or the characters? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Which is why I am still rating a 5. I would just advise that if Roller Derby is included in the next book it is researched a bit more.
Overall great read. I wish the next book wasn’t dated 2025! Hoping it is just a place holder date and that it comes out sooner!
Any Other Day is book one in the Richland Renegades series by Jenna McCall.
💜 forced proximity 💜 grumpy x sunshine 💜 found family 💜 hockey 💜 roller derby 💜 🌶🌶🌶 spice
He just couldn’t take it anymore. Stuck in this rehab center for people with concussions like he has. Boh was getting restless, tired of staring at the walls and being stared at from the staff at all times. Now, he has to have a guardian approved by the team. His team, the Richland Renegades, to make sure he was safe and stayed within his concussion protocols and safety perimeters. In walks a beautiful woman, and an idea blossoms. Can he pull this off? Could he get her to agree to this?
This was such a fun slow burn hockey romance. The push pull of the relations was fun as well as some of the banter. I loved how strong Novy remains throughout the book and doesn’t necessarily cave just because Boh was swoon worth or gave her a thread of attention. She stuck to her guns and standards. This was a fun book and I can’t wait to see what other stories are told within this series.
I enjoyed this first book in the Richland Renegades series. It’s fun and flirty, with some serious topics (long-term concerns of concussions), and introduces some of the players and other interesting characters.
Novy is a hardworking young woman who has learned to standup for herself, yet she’s a softy when it comes to helping or taking care of people she cares about. She steps up to be Boh’s medical guardian to help secure a practice facility for her roller derby teammates. The lease of the practice facility is one of the perks the Richland Renegades offer her to fulfill the guardian role.
I found it interesting how Novy’s presence tamed the rougher edges of Boh while she lived with him and offered him support. Their physical proximity also quickly ignited a mutual attraction between them.
The third act breakup was actually very pertinent to what was going on and the resolution to the situation really insightful and meaningful. I really enjoyed the story and loved the ending.
Yes I got my hockey hotties but so much more came with it, depth of characters, a need to catch up with the authors back catalogue, a difficult yet well dealt with medical need, sub-stories (Etienne and Scout ♥️) which I can’t wait to read more about and a couple that mismatch so we’ll they are perfect for each other.
Whilst a fun read with lol moments, there are also insightful deep moments that take this story to another level. I adored the interactions with the teammates when they came, the support and love between them was adorable.
Slow burn, when the 🔥 arrives, it was well worth waiting for and turns this couple into everything you want and more. Drama and angst fight for precedence, leading to a hard fought (by Boh) hea.
Lots of things to love about this book, and a new found desire to go to a roller derby 🤣♥️
This book is part of a series but it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone. It tells the story of Boh, an injured hockey player who will do anything to get back to playing and Novy the woman assigned to be his "Designated Medical Guardian". When forced to live together for at least three months they get to know each other and of course feelings are developed... I really enjoyed reading this book, it has great characters, a believable storyline and hot bedroom scenes. Boh and Novy are a perfect grumpy-sunshine couple and I rooted for them from the start. I also enjoyed getting glimpses of Scout and Etienne again (if you haven't read it already, you should definitely read the prelude to the series "Anyone but you") - I can't wait to find out how their story will continue. I will definitely go on reading this series and can't wait for the next book.
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Novy and Boh are opposites. Their lives have run parallel for a while, but they haven’t formally met. Instead, Novy has followed his career and watched him from afar at events she’s attended with her best friend, Scout. Boh is a hockey player, recovering from a concussion and other injuries as a result of a recent car accident.
This is quite possibly one of my favorite meet-cutes of all time. I don’t want to spoil it, so you have to read it for yourself. It’s comical and you can picture every second in your mind with total clarity. Novy and Boh then face a forced proximity type situation, as Novy is appointed his Designated Medical Guardian during his recovery. The chemistry between these two is spicy.
If I had to find a less than wonderful part of this book it is the Czech phrases. The glossary at the start of the book was helpful, but at times some of the phrases seemed unnecessary.
Novy is sweet, kind and a caregiver at heart- except when playing roller derby when she is a beast! Boy is a hockey player who made a couple of bad choices and is now dealing with a concussion and protocol demands he stay in a care center unless he has a guardian to stay with him. Novy is roped into being said guardian and, well, let the games begin. Boy is frustrated with the situation of needing a guardian and grumpily refuses to allow Novy to befriend him. They are both fighting the chemistry between them and the fact that they enjoy each other’s company. Bob’s struggle with the possible ramifications of his present and future injuries leads to stupid decisions and moments of fallibility. There are wonderful secondary characters, romance, spice, sports related action and a mastiff that moves the story along to a satisfying conclusion.
Professional hockey player Boh will do just about anything to get out of Brightside medical center. He is being treated for a concussion and the team doctors will only release him to a medical guardian. When Boh sees the feisty Novy enter the center (she's going to visit her friend and fellow Roller Derby teammate, Scout), he tries to convince the medical staff she's his guardian. She only accepts the deal because her roller derby team needs a new place to practice after their lease wasn't renewed.
Once Boh sees Novy in action on the track, he is intrigued by her. But once he's back on his feet, instead of crutches, do these mismatched lovers have a chance at a happy ending?
I really enjoyed this story as it wasn't the typical hockey romance. Well done!
So I love that the characters have unique names, Boh and Novy are not names you see in books. They each bring their personalities into this book, which in Boh's case, is a grumpy hockey athlete with issues. He put himself into a bad situation and now it's affecting his hockey career. It's his second concussion and he needs someone to babysit him. It might have been either the worst or best time for Novy to be at the hospital, especially when she gets chosen to be his baby sitter. Novy is a gem. She's a dietician by day who does videos for others to see and by night, she on a roller derby team. Her personality is fun throughout this entire book. Being with Boh isn't exactly what she wanted at first, but then it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her. This was a good start to the series and I can't wait to read more from her!!
